I'm interested how does bmw IDRIVE work. You need to be subscriber or what? I guess you can't just install spotify connect it via usb and that's it. BMW services must be working?
Awesome job!! I have bought similar parts and going to upgrade my e61. One question about the "BMW Connected" phone app, how did you get that one work with your old car? When i try to add my car, the app only tell me that this car don´t isn´t supported. Then i try to take a vehicle number from a e60 2010 from junkyard, but it could not find that car. Do you have any tip of what i need to do, to add a e60 vehicle to BMW Connected?
Thanks for the comment! It won’t let me add the vehicle, but I can still use the app to see the tank range and to use the navigation feature on the iPhone which sends instructions to the Idrive and HUD really fast. What I find really surprising is that the app will still show a picture of your exact car based on the VIN even though BMW never intended for the E60 to be compatible with the Combox. Have you retrofitted the controller? If so, which trim piece did you use to secure it? Does the bottom of it touch the plastic underneath? Did you need to remove the center console? What I’m looking to do now is to get video to play from Iphone 4S on the Idrive like in this link minkara.carview.co.jp/smart/userid/406478/car/1131853/3341746/note.aspx I think I need to replace the armrest USB port with a USB A/V port and modify the aux connection to the back of the CIC to include video as well. I still haven’t found clear instructions though. Another thing I discovered is that you can use the blue plug on the Combox to connect a second USB port which is much faster than the one in the armrest. The album art loads in 1-2 seconds when playing music from your Iphone. @@bmwdiy Hey, I already have the CIC and Combox retrofitted in my 08" E60 LCI for now three years :) I changed the CCC Controller to CIC Controller because the look better and also have the new buttons for radio, multimedia, telephone and navigation. You need a new trim piece for the center console or try to find a company/person who can cut it out with CNC machine. Otherwise you need the adapter from the 6 series because with manuell editing it isn´t really exactly. The controller is bolted unterneath from the center console, so you must remove the center console. The cic controller is plugged in an adapter which hold it. Next step is to disconnect the cable from the big connector and the small connetor from the "Menü button". Then connect CAN, Power and mass to the small connector and plug in to the cic controller. For video plug in via iphone 4/4S, you need the iphone and also the groundplate (partsnumber: 84109243209) from an X5/X6 E7x, some wiring from the combox to the groundplate and at least the "snap in media" (iphone 4/4S). Greetings from Austria/Europe :)
Thanks for the info! Was it difficult to remove the center console? Did you need to disconnect the battery first? For the iPhone Video, do you need wiring from the baseplate to the back of the CIC? Can you just connect the baseplate to the Combox and leave it in the trunk?
@@bmwdiy I would recommend to disconnect the battery because you must change the wiring inside from the connector. For disassembling, I would unmount also the bambus trim under the cic headunit (trim with the buttons for heating, pdc...) do avoid scratches. It isn´t difficult, disassemble first the aluminium trim from the automatic selector, underneath are 3 torx screws. Then the cover from the ccc controller. Now unmount with a plastic lever tool the center console trim. Next step is to disassemble the textile cover on the side from the center console, underneath are on each side 2 screws. Last step is to unmount the trim piece at the back from the center console (use a plastic lever tool), there are 2 nuts to unscrew and also one connector to disconnected. Unmount the hand brake leather bag. Now raise the center console at the back and pull it out. The baseplate is mounted in the center console (you put the iphone inside with the "snap in"). The baseplate wiring is connected with the usb/aux socket (AUX_L, AUX-GND, AUX_R), the shielding wire is directly connected with the combox. Next step is to wire the video cable from the baseplate to the cic headunit. When you buy the cable from BMW, you must change the "pins" on side to male "pins" instead of female "pins". Last step, connecting the blue socket on the combox (disassemble the backseats) and connected it to the baseplate. Also some coding is required.
I think I have the coding already since I have the plugin option in external devices and can hear the audio from videos from iPhone 4s. What type of Video cable is it? Can you send a link? I know it connects to the same spot on the CIC harness as the other end of the AUX port in the armrest right? Which pins does the Video cable connect to on the CIC harness? Could I just use the USB port in the armrest instead of the base plate? I heard I could swap it with a USB A/V port and then connect the Video cable from the CIC harness to the AUX part of the port and then use the Y cable for the IPhone. Would this work? th-cam.com/video/Eccnxstjl00/w-d-xo.html

I figured out what’s causing the issues! When you’re connecting the black cable from the armrest USB port, make sure you connect it directly to Combox. By default it is first connected to the USB hub to the left of the Combox and then from the USB hub to the MULF which we don’t need anymore. What you want to do is take the cable from the top of the USB hub and use the little black extension they send you from Bimmertech and connect it to the Combox. This way we are bypassing the USB hub and the album art will load much faster when using your iPhone with the armrest USB port. When I made this change, I was getting the issues you’re describing but it was only when using a third party dollar store lightning cable. I switched to the official Apple lighting cable and now it does not disconnect anymore when using BMW Apps. Hope that helps!
