Otter lake is approximately 5 miles from the Fort Richardson (JBER-Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson) gate off Otter Lake Road. I first came here when I was stationed on Elmendorf AFB in the 70’s and 80’s. There were nature trails within the bird sanctuary but no boating was evident on the lake. Now, there is a boat house on site with a cafe and you can rent cabins, kayaks, paddle boards along with fishing. The lake has been enlarged since I was stationed at EAFB. The Otter Lake lodge of today has added an enclosure for grilling not too far away and a deck for live music set ups. This area is designed for the comfort of the military members and their families. There is often musicians on the deck of the lodge where all can hear during unit functions. There is black bear, moose and waterfowl around the lake. If you continue on the Otter Lake Road you will come to 6 mile lake, which is another great option for outdoor activities.
You must have authorization to access JBER to drive to Otter Lake. www.jberlife.com is a good source for information on JBER.
