  • Here’s a real gem from the golden era of piano building. Knabe was one of America’s foremost piano builders and their name as well as their instruments have stood the test of time through the years. bit.ly/2uT7FWg

I played on a Knabe two days ago in concert. It has a very unique timbre--light, delicate, bright, warm and earthy--perfect for salon pieces like Chopin's Nocturnes, Grieg's Lyric Pieces and Schumann's Kinderszenen. However, if you are a pianist who likes to invest in war horses like the Grosses Konzertsolo, the 2 Ballades and the Transcendental Etudes by Liszt, I would suggest a piano with a more thunderous bass and piercing treble and an overall richer and darker voice like a Yamaha, Steinway, Bechstien or Bosendorfer.

amazing comment Lukas! interesting you mentioned Bösendorfer to the list too between the others. I really liked this reminds me of Weber ones. I'm torn between Weber, Young Chan and perhaps something like this which in this one sounds something in between and more towards the Steinway but still has that "light and soft" feel. Which keys do you prefer or which has the lightest to you? I like light but not too light.

I absolutely love the vintage Knabe sound. I have a very similar 1930 Knabe with the same case and finish. Mine spent its first 80+ years in an estate in Westchester, NY, and I am only the second owner! It's a little longer at 5' 6". I'm curious....did this piano originally have an Ampico player unit attached to it? This piano (along with mine) has 6 legs (4 front/2 back) -- every one I have seen in this configuration was a player.

I bet that this Knabe was originally an Ampico Reproducing piano?? Nice piano! In fiddle back Mahogany too!

Thank you Robert! Please share if you have any suggestions no how to remove the fallboard? Pencil used for fingering fell behind. Thanks.

it sounds too bright and tinny imo. I like the softer, more elegant luxurious sound of a kawai grand for example.

Right. Like Steinway, Knabe was founded by a German immigrant.
