This is so unnecessary...taking off the music desk, hinges, and lid. Just more things to get damaged being separated from the piano. Im moved over 3,000 pianos and never damaged a single one keeping those parts on. It also makes less things to carry/drop, saves time, and less likely to leave at the warehouse/storage area. No thanks
@@mikerollins3088 as I understand it, the piano is tipped onto side where Edge of lid would be, leaving lid would put piano weight on the edge of lid and hinges.
@@MarcLaurens1 you're right as far as tipping it onto the side with the hinges...however, on a skidboard we only slide the piano over far enough so the lid rests up AGAINST the padded board that transports it. We dont pull the lid up and ON to the board, so there is no weight bearing on the lid or hinges and therefore no damage results. I definitely understand why you would mention that tho. Just not something to worry about with the technique we use
I could move that piano in ten minutes by myself. You don't have to remove the music rack or the lid. I know its an old school Yamaha just by the lag bolts in the third leg.
I have had my grand piano moved 5 times here in France in and out of apartments, I watched every step they did. I wouldn't hire the movers in the video.
Interesting that the video OMITTED removal of the pedals. So many movers leave them on to help them tip the grand over onto the skip, little caring about thge stress damage done to the pedal lyre assembly.
There are several ways to tip the piano over on to the board. I've personally moved over 100 baby grands and every time I've put a pad under the pedals and tipped it over. I've never had any problems or issues.
@@jimlowe6283 I still don't understand why someone would create a video on how to take apart a baby grand for removal and somehow forget to include the removal of the pedal assembly. Not too bright!

Not bad! :) By moving a piano especially an old one the most important thing is to fix the hammers with some band of soft sponge protecting the hammer shank against shocking and breaking caused by heavy vibration of the transport. By upright piano it's easy to realize by a grand one it's requires much more doing...
Those are called furniture pads or moving blankets. You can get them from some hardware stores but they will be expensive and low quality. The easiest place to get them retail would be to buy them from Uline on their web page.

The lid isn’t getting damaged because the “lip” is hanging over the paint board that they put it on. They didn’t just drop the piano to the bare floor; they put it on a grand piano board.
No reason to remove the lid in the first place if your using a SKID board. The height of the board allows the lid to not contact the ground. These are indeed amateurs.
I'm guessing that it took a tad over 3 minutes to move that Piano! I only want to move mine so fitters can lay new carpet, I didn't figure I would need to make a jigsaw out of the whole project.

if something falls or someone grabs in between the legs, the fabric will have nowhere to go except to compress the legs towards each other, risking damage. You don't have to tape the legs, but don't start the wrapping from the open legs end either.
Android Kenobi i can see that possibility but i havent seen it happen. if the legs in particular are that fragile i would avoid the weight of a pad on them altogether.
no thank you take the hinges off. I have done far too many repairs of the side of the case because the instrument is layed over on that dise to move it and the hinges touch the ground first if you are not REAL carefull.
They did a great job, but it took much more than just 3 minutes just to disassemble and protect the piano. And it could not be different, since proper care with the piano takes time. The hurried would certainly do a lousy job. If they take the same care in lifting and moving the piano using the proper tools, then their work is impeccable.

They need to invest in a side table to avoid working off the ground so much... It would also make the job more attractive to the next generation of Piano Movers

so very wrong - I'm a second generation piano store owner. DO NOT EVER ALLOW A PIANO MOVER TO REMOVE THE PIANO LID. You don't want the action and strings (the expensive stuff) unprotected and accessible on (of all things) a moving truck. Also why risk scratching the case by having movers remove & reinstall your piano lid hinges. The hinges are not meant to be removed unless the piano is being refinished. It weakens them plus you risk losing the pieces. WHO BLANKET WRAPS A PIANO WHILE IT IS VERTICAL AND EXPECTS THE BLANKETS TO REMAIN IN PLACE DURING A MOVE? Drape the piano with multiple blankets while still ON ITS LEGS. Secure the blankets with plastic wrap. Then place it on its side. Now you have a protected piano ready to be moved. Check out this photo of a properly wrapped piano. facebook.com/pg/jcc2c/posts/ On the positive side - they did remove the pedal lyre prior to moving.
removing the lid allows for a lighter piece to carry and maneuver ! secondly if you wrapped and shrink wrapped it while still standing you would never be able to remove the legs since they are flush with the edge , not sure how you are a second Gen mover , but if the hood pins were not removed and was wrapped how you suggested when the piano goes to the moving board it takes all of the weight of the piano and applies all the force to the two lid hinges which will definitely weaken and stress the screw holes and you have a greater possibility of permanently damaging the lid or hinges or causing a serious misalignment issue or even bending the hinge or breaking the hinge from the whole itself which would require serious restoration to the piano ... these gents did it flawlessly , take note when building and disassembly at a piano factory the same steps are exhumed.
