@@tsemiu It's like it's intoxicating to relate to the pain, to feel a shared problem and not be alone. But we stop at that point so often and fail to try to address it
This but more for me…when I’m struggling with anxiety and depression, chester always sounds like someone who knows exactly how I feel and loves me and will see me through it
I was a freshman in high school when his life ultimately ended. I cried for days i grew up with this man but never was old enough to go to a show. I still remember watching the one more light TH-cam premiere and crying in school while watching it.
@@tjboylan20 Same, I started uni when he died and Linkin Park got me through my dark patches in high school. They showed me there was a different way of getting the emotions out and feeling them without cutting myself and closing myself off from family and friends.
@@tjboylan20 I love seeing so many younger (meaning not around for the very beginning) fans. It really shows that their music has touched so many people and continues to do so. I was in middle school when Hybrid Theory came out, that and Meteora were literally what got me through high school. I 100% know that if it weren't for Chester and LP, I would not be here.
@@piinkkranger i was born in 03 and my mom loved LP she would listen to them all day long so I grew up listening to the music and it was part of my everyday life. Same, I think my demons will get the best of me as well, I don't have tears, I'm full on crying listening to one more light, nothing soothes my pain😔😞😖
Chester Bennington is one I’ll never get over. This band was the closest thing I had to therapy as a depressed kid in a world that doesn’t believe in mental health. I did not expect to cry at this video, but I’m not all that surprised either.
@@jorgeherrera1074 I learned about a decade after high school that I had depression and anxiety. Before that I was around people who thought depression was "just being sad." I've gone through a lot of therapy and finally feeling better. I just mean that at the time, this was the only thing I had to validate what I was feeling. 💙
After he died, I went back and listened to their entire catalog. Every song hit so much harder. "Crawling in my skin, these wounds they will not heal" "One step closer to the edge, and Im about to break" "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesnt even matter" "i want to let go of the pain ive felt so long, i want to heal, i want to feel like im close to something real, somewher i belong" "id rather be all alone... cause i can see, the very worst part of you is me" "its so much easier to go than face all this pain here all alone" "You all assume im safe here in my room...clutching my cure I tightly lock the door...Ill paint it on the walls, cause im one at fault, ill never fight again, and this is how it ends" "take everything from the inside and throw it all away" "tried to give you warning but everyone ignores me, nobody's listening" "ive become so numb...ive become so tired" He was crying for help for 17 years.
i dissagree.... he was battling demons. before he died he seemed to be coming out of the darkness ...... BUT he was taken out, just like chris cornell.... it wasnt sui..... they were extremely close to outting a sex traffic/pedo ring
@@Brando-_-440 It is, it breaks my heart to pieces every single time. I lost my brother to suicide and whilst it was me who loved Linkin Park rather than him, Chester echo's everything I have felt in life, even when coping with that loss. I can barely listen to Chester without wanting to cry, for him, for my brother, for myself, and for that reason alone I will always love him.
@@veridico84 Thank you, i'm sorry you had to experience that kind of loss also. Losing anyone you love is heartbreaking, but there is profound sense of intense guilt which is inherited by those left behind after suicide which I wouldn't wish on anyone. I try to reassure myself that at the very least, they are no longer in pain, which is the bare minimum you can wish for with anyone you love.
Chester and Linkin Park was the friend and therapist any teenager who was struggling had with their songs and lyrics. Definitely are better performances and song choices which showcases Chester's vocal range and power. But literally every song shows his true power and his struggles in his music. Which is what made him so real and relatable
Yes definitely. My entire childhood I listened to linkin park. It appealed to my angst soooo much. Even at 23 I'm going through some rough times and linkin park is my fallback again
So many of their songs speak to my own lifetime battle with depression, feelings of unacceptance, insufficiency, isolation. (They came out in my 20s - i would just put on headset and get lost in the words, music)
@@ShadowKiller571 in my mid 30s, my dude and I am in the same boat. Many of us in that age who were there from the beginning lean on their music. Stay strong, pal. 👊
Agreed I grew up with Linkin Park, I'm 25 so they were there my entire life because everyone in my family except my Mom loved them so my older siblings always had them on, and as I got older and started getting depressed and I started listening more to the lyrics LP became something relatable and something that made me feel less alone because Chester felt the same way I did, and anytime I'm starting to feel like lets say rage quitting life to sugarcoat it, I just go right back to Linkin Park for comfort and to help release the stress and tension that makes it hard to keep on going, they certainly aren't a cure there's still time when nothing can stop me from feeling like I can't go on any longer but they still help and are still a comfort, every member of Linkin Park will always be my heroes for helping me get through the worst times.
Chester had the ability to have the most beautiful voice when he wanted to or have that awesome distortion. He was so beyond talented. What a tragedy. He's so missed. RIP 😢 🙏

Listening to Linkin Park as a depressed teenager was like hearing your own internal monologue put into words. That not only Chester, but every other person listening and singing along understood you. That feeling is a big part of how I made it through those years, and I'll never forget the impact this band had on me.
As a 41 year old man, hearing this song transports me back into my teenage room and mind space. And the emotions, and the frustration of not being able to vocalize them or to feel heard. And the regret from angry outbursts. That sensation of a scream just filling your core, needing to be released.
Chester was special because his voice wasn't perfect, but it was raw, and the incredible amount of emotion in every syllable was real. I'll never get over it. Rest in Peace, Chester ♥️
There are a few singers who fit that description, but Chester is definitely one of the best. I'd put Ben from Breaking Benjamjn and Tatiana from Jinjer in that group too.
What I always found most amazing about Chester was how his live performances were always so close to studio versions. How his voice didn´t give up on him is beyond me.
The thing that impressed me seeing LP live was the fact that Chester could maintain that intensity through the entire evening. It's one thing recording an album, having plenty of vocal rest between takes / songs, etc, but this dude could just belt all night long on stage. RIP legend.
"that's going to help sustain his voice over long years" That line hit me so hard, he left this world too soon! Losing Chester was so heartbreaking. All the music we will never get to hear. I can't imagine his pain, I wish he would've gotten help.
@@ALGERIANxxxxAFRICAN That is very incorrect, please don't spread misinformation. What Chester went through is heartbreaking and important that we talk about.
Chester was definitely at the end of the show in this song, his voice when was fresh and rested he would blow the roof off the building. But he always gave everything emotionally and physically
I’ve seen many suggest it, but seriously, “Given Up” is one of the best displays of Chester’s capabilities. Once you hear it, you’ll understand how he can “sing like an angel and scream like a demon”
The way you talk about Chester and his voice... it genuinely brings tears to my eyes, seeing you light up at his voice and appreciate everything we, the fans, have always known but couldn't always quantify. You give a voice to how he made us feel, how he captured a generation's pain.
Saw them at Soundwave 2013 were they owned the stadium (at the end of their performance half the crowd left for somewhere else as the stage was being set up for Metallica 😱) and I regret that I didn't realise or properly appreciate what I was experiencing 😢💔
Chester was a good friend of my daughter when they were in high school...in Phoenix, Az. A bunch of great kids in the theater program. His band while in high school played for us from the bottom of my dry swimming pool!! Little did I imagine he would progress to such fame. And then...to loose him. My daughter posted in their private group....that she wished fame had not separated him from the group...that in school they got each other through tough times by climbing up on the roof of the theater and talking it out.
This reminds me of when my friend and lover climbed atop an abandoned church. She confessed to me for the first time there how she felt inside. I miss Melissa and Chester all the time.
The band just released an album created from Chester's restored master recordings from back in the day. Your daughter might be interested in hearing it. Search Grey Daze new albums, 2020 and 2022.
I still can't believe it. The person that helped me from taking that dark step, was the very one pushed to it. Thank you Chester. I only wished, someone helped you, like the millions you helped. Rest in peace and thank you. - one of many saved thanks to Chester Bennington
And he reminded us all the time everyone is human and don't hold idols because they're human too. Everyone is capable of the human condition. That's why he was so amazing that he addressed it beautifully. He will be missed.
Some people help others because they don’t want other to feel the way they do. It’s very kind and noble. But it’s also very sad that those same people don’t get the same support sometimes.
It wasn't until I was older and came back to Linkin Park that I truly understood and appreciated the emotional depth in his lyrics. Breaking the Habit, Crawling and Numb always hit hard for me
I was just talking with someone about this yesterday. The interpretation I had of Linkin Park's lyrics and music when I was a teenager and listening to Hybrid Theory and Meteora for the first time are VERY different to my understanding now 20 years later, especially in light of learning more about Chester's journey through life.
@@RedGryz Ditto. It wasn't until I heard of his death that I went back and listened to hybrid theory, meteora, and minutes to midnight again, all of which were very influential in my youth. I'm almost thirty now and linkin park's music is incredibly down to earth, emotional, dark, and relatable.
Same. As a teenager I wrote Linkin Park off eventually as a load of angsty emo bollocks. But coming back as an adult, after some more life experience, and also given how Chester died, you realise that those lyrics weren't just trying to be edgy...They were real thoughts and feelings and the music was just trying to express them, reach out, and deal with them.
The day his death was announced is one I'll never forget. It still hurts so bad whenever I hear his voice, but he also still gives me a lot of strength to this day. It's bittersweet, and I genuinely hope his soul is free from pain. He endured too much.
This is my first time listening to Chester since he died and I’m surprised how much it guts me. As old and disconnected from the music of my high school days as I might feel, performances like this remind me just how much of my past self is still alive in me.
Saw them open for metallica on the summer sanitarium tour. Deftones canceled minutes before they were supposed to hit the stage so Linkin Park readied themselves as fast as they could and played an extended set to eat up the time. Was amazing. Pretty sure it was around '03.
There remains a lot of questions regarding his "suicide". He and Chris Cornell were working on a documentary concerning something similar to what you mentioned.
chester was drug addict just like other "super stars". they have simple hissing voices, you can hear he has trouble with melody and bringing in deep voice. just terrible. no wonder he had problems, he really understood how bad he was.
I once heard someone say that Chester's voice was, "Grief made manifest." I feel like that encapsulates so much of his singing. Rest in Peace Chester, you were a colossal part of my life and formative years.
Chester live was always raw, like an exposed nerve. It was like he was channeling his emotions directly into the mike, pain, love, loathing you didn't hear it you felt it.
I've been listening to Linkin Park since I was like 10 years old, I'm 31 years old now. Listening to Linkin Park got me through a lot of tough times in my life and when Chester took his own life it ate me up inside , my son was just born and then a few days later , the world lost Chester Bennington. I haven't had the heart to listen to his last 2 albums, even now. There's still songs with his talented voice that I still have a chance to listen to for the first time and that's something special. Someday I'll have the courage to finish listening to the rest of the discography .
Almost the Same journey. Been listening to Linkin Park since 2002. Now, in my 30s' their music has left such an imprint on me, it transcends all barriers honestly Chester soothed the angst of millions 😔
Another one to do also is: Crawling-One more light. Now that Chester has passed, this one really tugs at me. It's such an intimate performance. I'm so happy you are doing Linkin Park. My favorite band from their beginning. Thank you. Miss you Chester...

One more light on The Chris Cornell tribute is heavy :'(
ive always hated how people make fun of linkin park because it was such an integral part of so many childhoods not because its some angsty nonsense but because their songs their lyrics spoke to so many of us because it allowed us to voice the pain we all felt but nobody could ever put into words.
For a great contrast in Chester's vocal ability and singing styles, listen to One More Light, The Messenger, Iridescent, Leave Out All The Rest, and Shadow of the Day and then listen to Victimized, Given Up, Crawling, War, and Don't Stay. Just to name a few. His voice his everything from A to Z and beyond!
The messenger fan q&a performance where he forgets the lyrics and has the fans help him out. Still smiles and laughs it off. He was just an awesome gentle soul with a powerful voice.
One of those vocalists whose lyrics hit so much harder after he's gone. The emotions are ever present, and writing this on the day that Taylor Hawkins died... man, music can bring you down as much as it can lift you up.
I feel you on that. the foo fighters are my favorite band and i listen to them often. i have ptsd and anxiety and when i get upset, i listen to my "get happy songs" and its some foo fighters songs. I don't know when i'll be able to listen to them again without crying
Was just thinking this today. All these musicians that took their lives or OD it leaves this emptiness in the world for fans and other musicians. And that shit hurts man. Feels like losing a friend because we connect to music in such a deep way.
@@tawnyjay2258 i saw them at Rockville and crowd surfed on an air mattress during their show. Feel so lucky to have such a fun time during their set. What I find mesmerizing about Chesters singing is that he sings from two perspectives at once. all the time. You can hear him sing with pain and perseverance simultaneously, you can hear him sing with exhaustion and optimism at once. There's always two perspectives whether he's singing or screaming. A legend. Once in a lifetime.
@@CraigOpie She normally approaches these from a vocal coach stand-point, so I think that was just a slip up on her end. She mentions his death around 7:50.
chester sung to himself, his memories, to everyone... he wanted people to understand by reading between the lines but not hidden.. he gave all to his craft, miss you bud, im still here because of you
Ive heard somewhere that during the production of this particular song, the takes was so much since he’s breaking down due to the purest and closest of the song with what he’s experiencing. For so long i only know that chester sings a great song but actually he’s expressing his depression. Rest in peace
This song was actually written by Mike about a friend that had addictions....Chester was still struggling with addiction and depression while recording this album. It took a few takes to record this due to Chester breaking down. His addiction at the time almost ended the band
If you enjoyed the last scream here, you NEED to listen to the song "Given Up" also, Chester did vocals on a song called "Cross Off" - Mark Morton that was the last recording Chester did. The music video pays homage to Chester by leaving the mic stand empty but the band does the performance. 10/10 best vocals from Chester. May he rest in peace.
Cross Off is an amazing song, but it's also a risky one if you cry easily, given the context and the lyrics. I couldn't get through it without crying for several months after it came out.
"Given Up" by far an absolute favorite there....and although Mike does a lot of the singing/rapping on Bleed It Out, it still feels like Chester did the better part of the writing and hell just the chorus alone is enough to pull my heart strings!!!
First song of theirs I ever heard was Crawling, which to this day is a personal favorite. You can feel every little detail of the pain and sadness. You can feel that Chester not only had talent, but also had personal connections to the feelings he was relating to. It is a song I have heard so many times that I know like an old friend, and just like an old friend I welcome it's arrival each time with both joy and sadness.
@@henriblack8673 I remember using his music to try and explain the importance of tone when teaching Korean kids back in the day. 80% didn't get it but those who's did thought it was amazing and asked me post classes about music and other cool things to learn :)
The first LP song I heard was One Step Closer in a music shop in a shopping mall, I was 6.5 years old and I instantly loved it, so I begged my mother, who was there to look for Guns N Roses vinyl's to ask the clerk what song it was and who made it. That day I became the proud owner of a copy of Hybrid Theory and to this day still my nr. 1 album, I love it to death. So you can imagine my joy, when LP released Meteora just 3 months after I had gotten Hybrid Theory. I am the definition of that meme with Snape and Dumbledore: "After all this time?" "Always." They will always hold a special place in my heart. As many other people, their music helped me get through both dark and bright times. When I was teased in school and was depressed and suicidal, when I got my first girlfriend, when I broke up with her, when I drove car for the first time, when I landed my first job, when my dog died. They are simply the best of the 21st century, and I have a hard time seeing anyone ever again get soo successful with that kind of music.
Chester just had one of them voices that felt like he was singing to you. One of the few vocalists of any genres thats voice, lyrics just feel like theyre for you. Im 35 now, and to this day his music helps me through any shit times i have. No matter what anyone says about linkin park, theres no denying Chester was a brilliant gift, with a huge heart. Hurts he left us so soon. So many songs you can dive into...given up, crawling, one more light, black out, the little things give you away, leave out all the rest, burn it down, new divide...too many to list. His last song he did before he passed with Mark Morton is magic too. That songs 'cross off'
The beginning is a stripped verson of the song, and transitions into the studio version. It give me goosebumps when Mrs. Zharoff said thew way Chester sings the beginning is like a friend talking to you, because the song was written by Mike to Chester as a plea to Chester that he need to break his habit of drugs and alcohol that lead to him being volatile. The first few times Chester tried to preform the song he couldn't even get through it because it was so emotional to him. There was one really old clip somewhere where he chokes up. A life changing song for Chester.
When Elizabeth mentions towards the end about how Chester has a youthful innocent voice to go with the lyrics it makes me think it is Chester’s broken child coming out, not just for this song but for all of their songs. Chester’s tortured youth is being manifested through their music. For years I’ve heard people make fun of Chester for sounding like a girl, including me at one point unfortunately, but they fail to realize he is bringing out his youthful voice to express what happened to him and how he felt during the times when he was abused. Which makes it all the more tragic to think that that his inner child never found peace…
Yup. Sadly some people no wonder what you do or say they got this deep void in them and nothing helps. I feel so bad For his kids. Especially the twins they'll grow up never getting to see their dad. Its so heartbreaking. I deal with the deep depression and I struggle daily but my daughter gets me through it.
Yea. it felt like their first 3 albums had a lot of song that could be seen as either a cry for help or a way to release tension and express himself. but i was like 10 when hybrid theory came out so even tho i knew the words were kinda sad, i wasnt thinking that this person needed help. Chester was a vocal superhero to me growing up, his vocals (along with matt's from A7X) were a gateway to my appreciation for heavier and heavier vocals over the years. i will always remember him for getting me into screaming 🤘
Chester's strength was never in singing low and slow. His screams, his emotion, his power, his ability to "sing multiple notes at once", and his amazing lung capacity, is what made him truly iconic for a decade of music. Especially his drawn out notes are really something. About the "space invader" sound in the song, the band - especially Mike - has a thing for retro games. They even made their own 8-bit game at one point. I think this fascination might also be somewhat related to Mike's Japanese heritage. Furthermore, Mike himself made a lot of the illustrations for the music video for this particular song, where once again I feel like the Japanese inspiration shines through.
@@IronPaws89 Thank you, didn't know the studio they collaborated with. I know that I've heard Mike did some of the art. I don't know too which degree, and I of course can't say for sure that it's true, but I don't think anybody would be surprised that he took an active part in the collaboration.
sitting here today on the 5th year anniversary of Chester's passing and it feels almost fitting that this video popped up in my feed. Such an amazing voice. R.I.P Chester, we all miss you!

"back support is good indication that it will sustain his voice for over a long amount of years" Damn woman, way to hit us in the feels all over again :(
What made Chester one of my favorite vocalists is that he captures the feelings that I think we can all relate too at different points in our lives…a mix of angst, loss, aggression, longing and desire for something better. No matter how many years go by, I always feel moved when I hear him sing. I lament I never got to see Chester perform live.
It is amazing watching someone fall in love with this band. I have loved Linkin Park for too many years to count, and it is lovely to see someone falling for the authenticity and passion of Chester, Mike, and the rest of the band. Your LP videos have been some of my favorite to watch. Thank you for being open to so many genres of music, and teaching us about voice mechanics.
Breaking the Habit is one of my favorite songs because, while it was written specially about Mike’s friend’s drug addition, it covers the hopelessness and emptiness that comes with so much mental illnesses. It’s a song about addiction and the internal battle of fighting it, but it’s also describing the internal struggle those who struggle with depression to keep going. Chester brings the emotion this song requires to bring it another level and portray the desperation the lyrics describe. RIP Chester. I miss him every day.
Not necessarily about addiction. It could also be about (and this is really sad) Breaking The Habit of living or fighting depression. Maybe by breaking the habit he just means he cant take it no more, especially in the bridge this theory makes sense. "Ill never fight again, and this is how it ends" and then "I'll never be alright" So hes breaking the habit of living, by commiting suicide. Would also fit with the video of the song where he jumps off a roof in reverse. I'm writing this in tears... it's incredibly sad with all thats happened, even 5 years later.
Linkin Park is the band we listen to to give our darker thoughts a voice. Their songs show you that you're not wrong for feeling broken, ignored or abused. By being both sympathetic and aggressive - sometimes in the same breath - they break through that shell of doubt and insecurity you built up around you and allow you to let out those repressed emotions. The music helps by blending classic rock/metal instrumentals with synths and digital effects and even more exotic sounds into a driving force that takes you out of your everyday thoughts. _Breaking the Habit_ is the perfect choice as a first impression. Not only was it Chester's favorite song, it's also up there with the darkest themes in their songs. The line "Cause I'm the one that falls" is taken literally in the music video, confirming it's about what you thought it was. And at the same time it takes you onto that journey slowly, building up to the crescendo and release at the end - with the lyrics being both extremely clear but also entirely open to apply them to your own struggles. As further suggestions, _From The Inside_ perfectly illustrates Chester's duality with large sections in both his singing and screaming voices - to then blow you away by going even further. _Somewhere I Belong_ showcases Chester's ability to sing extended passages and melodies in his scream voice, while able to switch in and out of it at a moment's notice. He also shares the spotlight with Mike Shinoda, who raps the verses in this song, with some backing from Chester, switching roles for the chorus. And if you ever want to be scared of Chester, _Faint_ might be their most aggressive song. With Mike carrying the early song as the "rational" voice, Chester takes it over as the "emotional" voice and drives the point home. I'm very sure you'll have fun with his vocals in this. Long post is long, but I think you can tell that Linkin Park is close to my heart. As someone who just recently learned he has ADHD and was living decades of his life in hard mode without knowing, I've always had trouble putting my struggles into words, but Linkin Park managed to do so. Chester's voice might just have saved my life along the way - I'm just sad I couldn't do the same for him...
I'm here in 2024. Chester had the most unique, crowd-gathering, awe-inspiring, and hypnotic voices of my generation. No one will EVER reach this level of natural vocal talent. #angelkissed #ripchester ❤
I think it's probably pitchy because his voice is tired at this point in the concert. Would love for you to hear him fresh, an incredible vocalist and wonderful live.
I agree, that's the one reason why i feel listening to the album version is a bit more true to him at his peak, since he'd have all his strength to push into the song that way. Or maybe a live performance of the song where he's not been singing and screaming for 8+ songs already hehe
Totally agree. Would recomend the Chris Cornell Memorial performance of One more Light. Both showcasing his clean, fresh voice, but also showing just how much emotion he could put into his voice.
well yeh you guys are right that it was towards the end of a gig, but also this was during the time in his career when his voice was really deteriorating and getting ripped up. It wasn't long after this that he stopped screaming completely and started singing everything clean because he just completely fucked his voice. Elizabeth had a bad take on it being healthy based on him going back to cleans after a scream because his style seriously fucked his voice. He went years performing without pushing his classic scream and it wasn't until about a couple of years before he died that he started adding screams back in to his gigs in the way he did when we were all younger, but even then he still favoured the cleans. I think this had a lot to do with why the band went to more of a pop like sound.
I've suffered from depression since 15. I've always loved Chesters voice and I will ALWAYS love it. If by any chance heaven exists, I hope I'll meet Chester there. I have huge respect for him and I hope from all my heart that his okay and rests in peace. Love you Chester, greatfull for all the joy and good music you delivered us.
Chester was one of the greatest artists of all time. His voice, his lyrics, his way of performing. Linkin park is beyond phenomenal. Rip man everyone misses and will always love him. Made my childhood incredible.
Linkin Park was one of those life changing bands for me. Their Debut Album dropped when I was 11/12 years old, which was the same time I started playing and writing music. They were decades ahead of their time when it comes to music production, their songwriting was unparalleled and Chester, still to this day, has one of my all time favorite screams and rock voices. You need to check out a lot more of their stuff to really hear what Chester and Mike were able to do together. Truly inspirational.
Linkin Park got me through a lot of my days where I was fighting drug addiction 6 years clean. Thank You Chester Bennington for getting me through my worst days. R.I.P.

Anyone that's gone though struggle or pain in their life can feel the emotions in his voice and lyrics. Now that he's gone his songs hit hard emotionally. He will never be forgotten. RIP Chester...
"The Messenger" is one of my favourite Linkin Park songs. Never have I heard such a strange combination of sweat and harsh; Chester was the master of both.
It's hard to hear this song 20 years later when we know how he exit'd this world. Back in the days when the song was released it also had a dark theme and it was clear what he was singing about. But now with the knowledge of his death, well you get it.
I've always loved his voice. I find his voice so haunting, like even after the song is over his voice is still lingering in your ear. Linkin Park was very artistic, RIP Chester
What's beautiful about Chester is when watching him live, he was able to project his natural human side, his vulnerability, the young fun loving child and everything inbeteeen. I'm so humbled to have had the opportunity to see him once on stage prior to his passing, rest in peace❤
im 35 years old. and i can honestly say that in my teens i NEEDED Linkin Park, it was kinda like the voice you wished you had and the feelings you tried to understand but put to lyrics. They really were the soundtrack to my life in the teens and i still can get very emotional listening to Linkin Park to this day. Remembering what i felt back then and realizing how i evolved into who i am today. Rest In Peace, Chester. We love you
As a 29 y/o man I did not expect to cry during this video. LP and Chester were there for me, musically, in some of my darkest times while growing up. I still remember the day we lost him. While working in Hollywood I got to know him second hand through my boss. Such a wonderful person, his wife and children as well. And reading everyone else's comments about how meaningful he was in their lives really just sent me over the edge while listening to you speak about him. Thanks so much. This was a cathartic cry for such a beautiful person who made millions of other beautiful people feel connected to one another.
Chester’s controlled chaos is so unbelievable. His screams are completely full of intent and emotion and he’s just in complete control of how far to take them and then able to switch back to a soft, sad sound SO quickly. It creates the sound of what I think being stuck in a negative space feels like: sad, empty, dark, and then suddenly releasing pain, anger, and frustration
This is just the tip of the literal iceberg for LP songs. Chester was one of the most gifted singers I have heard over the many years that he sang. I only hope that this will be just the beginning of the LONG list of songs where Chester and Mike will blow your mind.
Chester is famous for having “multiple voices”. You always know it’s him, but he had so many different voices inside of him and every one of them had it’s own beauty
I love the lack of familiarity that you brought to the table. I'm not sure what songs of theirs you've heard in the past, but hearing your take on this song and picking apart the sounds of both the music and Chester is awesome. Been listening to this song since its release in 2003 so it's all too comforting to me, but hearing it all being taken apart by fresh ears brings a new life to it. Great video ✌
Perspective on this song changed as i got older - as a kid in innocence thought it was about ending a drug habit or whatever bad habit you had - so a positive thing. With time, and understanding, this is a more final ending as the only way to break this habit. I know Mike Shinoda had said he finds this song tough now, as its so close to how Chester died, and i'm sure he's not the only one. RIP Chester.
Same. Growing up I never really caught all the lyrics but also thought it was about drugs. Listening to this for the first time in probably 10 years I can now hear the lyrics clearly and oh my god my heart wasnt ready.
Chester sang from the heart , his pain , his anger and his sadness . A brilliant but troubled person . I used to talk with him but never understood his inner problems . A much missed person so sad
Chester stated for years that “Breaking The Habit” was his favorite Linkin Park song. It’s definitely my favorite song from LP too. I don’t feel so isolated when I’m listening to it♥️

Mine was Points of Authority, saw the music video for it on Cartoon network.
@@henriblack8673 I remember using his music to try and explain the importance of tone when teaching Korean kids back in the day. 80% didn't get it but those who's did thought it was amazing and asked me post classes about music and other cool things to learn :)
The crawling 9/11 remix still gives me heeby jeebies to this date... have you all heard Dream State's cover? HOLY FREAKIN!!!
Now you know why us Linkin Park fans love Chester. His voice is amazing!
Chester is a very underrated vocalist, her statement "His back breathing will help his voice support for years..." ...it hurts...
big oof
Came here to say that. Big oof indeed
When she said that I shed a tear. The world is missing something special without him in it.
Underrated? He is considered one if not the best.
To call Chester underrated is just... Oof
He warned us so many times. In so many songs.
And it still hit like a ton of bricks, because we never actually saw it coming.
RiP Chester.
Yup. Sadly some people no wonder what you do or say they got this deep void in them and nothing helps. I feel so bad
For his kids. Especially the twins they'll grow up never getting to see their dad. Its so heartbreaking. I deal with the deep depression and I struggle daily but my daughter gets me through it.
He didn’t write all the songs. Mike wrote breaking the habit. His last interview was a cry for help
We all thought the songs were meant to be relatable, but in hindsight it’s quite literally screaming in our face that he was struggling.
@@apples8872 but definitely a lot written for chester
Yea. it felt like their first 3 albums had a lot of song that could be seen as either a cry for help or a way to release tension and express himself. but i was like 10 when hybrid theory came out so even tho i knew the words were kinda sad, i wasnt thinking that this person needed help.
It was animated by Studio Gonzo, not Mike, but I agree with everything else. Chester was definitely a once in a generation vocalist
“I’ll paint it on THE WAAAAAAAAAaLLLLLll!”
This was an amazing video/analysis… Those switches from ____ to clean & back are INSAAANE. Seriously have never heard emotion translated so well to a voice.. And on that note, have never heard a better way of putting into words what is actually happen. It’s all emotion from the heart that comes to the top and YOU CAN HEAR IT! Beautiful.Thank you for paying this much attention to & having this much passion to do so with integrity. I’m humbled watching this. RIP to Chester. He & Linkin Park honestly hit me much harder than I ever realized and then… Chester Bennington my brother in humanity; You will be missed. Nothing but love to everyone here & cheers to a better humanity moving forward. Break habits and smash expectations.🖤💜💚💓💗❤️🔥
The cute little giggle after talking about Chester’s back expanding on his breathing.
She’s such a nerd for music, vocals and everything involved
And I’m fully here for it
Passion but she don’t know much about music,or else she’d be a real instructor imo
He sang with his entire body.

Damn woman, way to hit us in the feels all over again :(
What made Chester one of my favorite vocalists is that he captures the feelings that I think we can all relate too at different points in our lives…a mix of angst, loss, aggression, longing and desire for something better.
I’m just one fan of millions, but man, I miss Chester Bennington so much. Thank you for keeping his memory alive
Hit the nail on the head mate. Seriously can't think of a better way to describe what's going on in the lyrics.
Don't we all miss him? It's still fresh in my mind that he's gone.
Chester's habit not Mike's
Not necessarily about addiction. It could also be about (and this is really sad) Breaking The Habit of living or fighting depression. Maybe by breaking the habit he just means he cant take it no more, especially in the bridge this theory makes sense. "Ill never fight again, and this is how it ends" and then "I'll never be alright" So hes breaking the habit of living, by commiting suicide. Would also fit with the video of the song where he jumps off a roof in reverse. I'm writing this in tears... it's incredibly sad with all thats happened, even 5 years later.
@@nadinehoogenboezem4798 Mike wrote the song but chester was the singer
Chester's voice might just have saved my life along the way - I'm just sad I couldn't do the same for him...
amen, brother
Fellow ADHD brain and LP fan here. You hit the nail on the head.
And Iridescent showed how angelic and clarion his voice could be
❤️
The long post is appreciated ;)
Anything from Live in Texas. He was an absolute beast at that time, his voice was impeccable on that recording.
Definitely pitchy being the end of a long set. Dude worked himself to the bone every concert. RIP
Chester's cover of Adele's Rolling in the deep is great. 'Pushing me away' in this format is brilliant too.
OMG YES!!!!!
YES! 2011 iTunes festival London. That whole show was absolute top tier!
Yessss this will blow her mind
Completely agree. The Adele cover is excellent
The backstage warmup of Rolling in the Deep is better than the concert version to me.
there's a difference between a performer and an artist, and then, there's vocalizing the heart and soul. That's Chester for you.
Only Chester? Or the whole LP?
Linkin Park was one of those life changing bands for me. Their Debut Album dropped when I was 11/12 years old, which was the same time I started playing and writing music. They were decades ahead of their time when it comes to music production, their songwriting was unparalleled and Chester, still to this day, has one of my all time favorite screams and rock voices. You need to check out a lot more of their stuff to really hear what Chester and Mike were able to do together. Truly inspirational.

Came here looking for this, 100% true
It's hard to hear this song 20 years later when we know how he exit'd this world. Back in the days when the song was released it also had a dark theme and it was clear what he was singing about. But now with the knowledge of his death, well you get it.
Man, I was sad when he passed, but hearing this threw me... I'm over here tearing up.... RIP Chester.... 😥
We love you
"Given Up" is one of the best models of Chester's vocal skills in Linkin Park. Plus a 18 second scream in the bridge
I think people need to start off by listening to Meteora start to end.
The entire album is amazing.
@@idorion9096 Easily, by far, my favorite album of theirs.
I love Chester Bennington so much, his story , his voice all of it. and the people that acknowledge him. Thank you for making a video About him ❤❤
Perspective on this song changed as i got older - as a kid in innocence thought it was about ending a drug habit or whatever bad habit you had - so a positive thing.
Listening to this for the first time in probably 10 years I can now hear the lyrics clearly and oh my god my heart wasnt ready.
if you've never seen it, the animated music video for the song kind of adds more non-drug context to it.
Chester sang from the heart , his pain , his anger and his sadness . A brilliant but troubled person . I used to talk with him but never understood his inner problems . A much missed person so sad
