Please do one analysis of their live performance one old and one new and talk about the difference I would love to see your input on it as it has changed quite alot.
If there’s one more so g you can do of System of a Down please do spiders. It’s probably their greatest song imo, and the wide range of vocal techniques he uses is just insane.

@@bogoljubdjordjevic7528 just checked with google maps out of boredom. Armenia and Serbia are a little over 1000 miles away from each other. I based these measurements from the closest borders to each other. Crossing over 700 miles over the black sea.
@@bogoljubdjordjevic7528i think you noticed the simmilarities because our priests use the same singing techniques. I think serj must have been in the church quire or studied to become a priest or something.
I wholeheartedly agree. Chop Suey is amazing and B.Y.O.B is up there with it. But then again, you could put all their music on one playlist, hit random at any point and land on an amazing song.
This tune was always about drums for me. The snare sound is fantastic and every 4th bar in the verse there is a slightly longer pause between the final snare and bass drum hits of the fraze. I adore that tiny detail. Drum covers on YT miss it or embellish the beat in their own way ruining it in my eyes. This beat is so perfect it needs to be played like on the recording.
SOAD's drummer is what makes me want to buy a drum kit and learn to play. I grew up playing Chop Suey on Rockband's drumset, and that beat is still to this day stuck in my head.
Channels like this are so important because I can see in your face and hear in your voice the same awe and wonder I felt when hearing this song for the first time. That's a feeling I can never get back, because it was 21 years ago and since then I've heard this song hundreds of more times, and as amazing as it is every time, I ca never get that first reaction back, so seeing it in you is kind of a special experience. Thanks for making this,
The very reason i watch reactions like this one is because what you just stated. I'm reliving my first pure experiences through these content creators.
17:13 - omg, her giggle there is such a joy to watch. It's just her pure appreciation & enjoyment for watching a masterful composition of vocals and musicianship. ❤
The raw emotion in Serj Tankian's voice is second to none. Every time that I listen to this song it's like I'm hearing it for the first time again. It's haunting, and comforting, and scary, and great... he is one vocalist that has always absolutely astounded me.
Snap! I work in a kitchen and nearly all of us has this one on our playlists and I still get excited everytime it comes on, i just completely let go and forget about everything 🥰
I really hope she does Spiders - one of my favorites, especially because of Serj's scream around the 3 minute mark, as well as that somewhat weird shift in the tone after the solo. I'd love her to do "Lost in Hollywood" too, so she can dive into Daron's vocals as well.
@@Doom1491 Those two are one's that capture sooo much. My absolute recommends as well. Not the best for analysis, but I always recommend P.L.U.C.K. as it had really solid harmonies between Daron and Serj, and it was the song that enlightened me about the Armenian genocide.
The song is according to them, talking about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The energy of the song and the seemingly random lyrics depict the chaos in the mind of someone with ADHD and all the distractions we face. "Somewhere between the sacred silence (a divine nonexistent stillness of thought/noise) and sleep, disorder x3" describing that all waking hours are disorder. I hope that helps listening to the song in a new light.
Sacred silence might be death, and disorder ( you own the world ? How do you own disorder ? ) might be all the awake and alive time outside sleepy state and other flashlight reveries imo
@@trishap.6931 Oh yes, same here. I instinctively love SOAD and this just makes me understand why. And the sacred silence of sleep is so hard to come by with my tinnitus, ADHD and just having a hard time shutting off my mind!

I saw them at a festival once where their set started late and as they reached midnight the event decided to switch of their power as they ignored stop signs. Serj kept singing and the whole crowd jumped in until the event managers noted that they wouldn't stop even without power, so they switched it back on and they went for another 30 minutes. It was great.
One of my friends wrote an entire thesis on System Of A Down for his senior year at the Eastman School of Music and it detailed the way that they use Diminished 7th chords and intertwine staccato into their music while enveloping other traditional middle eastern music to create this bombastic and almost at times cacophonous sound. It was extremely interesting how he was able to write an entire senior thesis on that band alone
His vocal modulation it's extraordinary, from drive to soft tones. Duets of guitars and drums absolutely insanes too! Thnaks for sharing this moment with us, Beth! Hugs from Brazil!
Elizabeth: “I’m just so mesmerized by his vocal…” Me: You should definitely check out Mesmerize. Serj is a true composer. He would be a fascinating interview. I think he’d be one to totally geek out over technique.
Holy mountains, the ambient vocals in aerials, the carnival shrieks scattered throughout their first album, the cool transic tunes of steal this album (like streamline)... serj has so much range
For sure! I got a chance to shake his hand real quick while another band was on and snuck in a quick comment about his fluidity between rapid fire spoken words, and just astounding, smooth held notes. He replied "Thanks for noticing". I coulda just died then and there 😊😁
Mezmerize and Hypnotize are just great albums for listening. System is addictive and gets better once you start to discover more songs like this one. Great video by the way.
So, so psyched for this! I was really hoping you'd look at more SOAD. Another great one that I really hope you get to is "Chop Suey!" it's a really incredible song with a pretty deep message and some great vocal work! I'd love to see your take on it!
@@osamaqtaitat If your speaking of a recent live concert that's because Serja stated that Producing songs and going through multiple tours has put a strain on his voice. But my brother took me to a concert in the early 2000's for a birthday present, it was truly amazing and a once in the lifetime concert experience.
What I like is that you didn’t just break down Serg’s incredible vocal technique, you broke down the design perfection of this song. The double pattern overlay is just one of the brilliant things they do. Another is the riff /drum pauses. Beautiful song design.

Well huh. That's an interesting thing, I never thought about it but I resonate with that description a lot. Not happy in my own experiences (except in rare cases) but capable of enjoying others.
One of the defining features of SOAD - among their amazing instrumentation and songwriting - is how aggressively they crash in with thrashing drums and roaring strings, then how swiftly they float into heavenly choirs and heartrending melodies. Serj really has an incredible voice. His transitions are so glorious - goes up like sunday service and comes down like murder. It’s magnificent. His vibrato technique is wonderful, but beyond that, it’s just so well written into the music that I think it punches out of its weight class.
Back when I was taking bass lessons, my teacher described their songs' effect as "you get hit by a frontal assault and, as you struggle to regain your poise you're reminded you have a heart, and it is bleeding". A bit dramatic for my taste at the time, but the fucker was right. This whole arc sometimes happens across the whole song (Chop Suey), while in other tracks it can be rushed between the instrumental intro and the first verse (Toxicity). Mind you, this is no accident. The four of them are actual, full blown artists in the fullest meaning of the term.
I saw an interview once where Serj was talking about the inspiration for his sound. He's Armenian and he said he draws a lot from listening to his father singing traditional folk songs and calls to prayer. He also has operatic training, which helps with the clarity and projection of his vocals.
Here Serj singing a Armenian folksong with his father, and you clearly can hear the influence of Armenian music on the music of System of a down. th-cam.com/video/eOkRCR40sqU/w-d-xo.html
I love that you are exploring System Of A DSwn :) I'd like to recommend "Question", it highlights Serj's Vocal abilities and the bands metric abillities greatly. Also "Chop Suey" and "B.Y.O.B" are absolute masterpieces by them
"I'm still...just...mesmerised" Yes. Still am, after more than a decade of obsessively listening to their songs. Also, Mesmerize the simple minded Propaganda leaves us blinded. Listen to Hypnotize, even if offscreen
I understand she’s a vocalist but can we just talk about how phenomenal John is. Those fills for the chorus is nothing complex but really drives the song in an interesting way. I’ve spent a month learning this song when I first picked up the sticks and to this day it’s still a ton of fun to play.
It's funny, I've read a number of comments about how John and Shavo aren't amazingly technical, and there is nothing outstanding about what they do. But the songs they produce are amazing, and that's all that counts really.
Serj's vocals are great. Serj with Daron harmonising is godly. It's a lesser known album song, but Ego Brain is probably my favourite SOAD song. It's really quite a chill and pretty song for them too, with great vocal harmonies.
I love watching her analysis, they always make me feel like I'm listening for the first time a song I've been hearing for years, brings back that feeling, the goosebumps. We always loose that with time, we often hear and sing songs without a second thought, an incredible song (like this one) passes to be simply another one in our list, looses his magic, but watching her be fascinated with them and teaching us of so simple or small facts makes me a kid listening this song for the first time all over again even after so many years and so many car rides singing it.
One of the few numetal groups that has continued to hold up for me 20-odd years later because of their depth. Love seeing your reactions and hearing your analysis. Gives me another level of appreciation for them I didn't think was possible. SOAD definitely hits hard :)
Can SOAD be considered NU? I mean his vocal capabilities make amazing sounds but their not Non Uttered, they have a clear meaning. Korn is definitely NU-Metal, I'm not convinced SOAD is too

I love your enthusiasm and chipper personality when analyzing Serj's vocal range. You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for sharing these videos. Love your content.
After seeing how talented Elizabeth is as a singer, I am even more impressed at how much she truly appreciates SOAD and all the other works she has analyzed. Looking up to instead of down on. So refreshing.
I'm still excited for her too because she still hasn't seen a whole other dimension of Serj's vocal talent. She needs to listen to one where he really goes nuts with his higher register and stuff
Cool story. Serj lives in New Zealand now. A couple years ago he built a new recording studio on his land. My brother was there every day for 2 week's land moving and laying the slab. Long story short they got along really well as they bonded politically and my brother didn't treat him like a celebrity. He would singing throughout the day and show him the things he could do with his voice while he was helping out. At the end of the job he gave him a signed poster and invited him and his girlfriend over for dinner
I was told I met him when I was younger but i don't have memory of it as I lost over 90% of my memory from a head injury. sad time. I wish incould relive that.
Brother is just the nicest guy. My mates and I met him on queen street in god must've been 2006? When he was spending time between nz and the USA. Saw we were a bunch of rock/metal enthusiasts and stopped for a chat. Asked where is good to eat. Had an awesome chat with him. Such a good dude.
@@JPindanga celebrities are still just people. My mom, dad, sister and me once hung out with Angus and Julia Stone when they visited my city for a performance. We all got something to eat and my dad got along really well with Julia Stone, to the point my mom joked he had a crush on her (which is something my parents openly talk about with each other, btw, as you should be able to in a healthy relationship). If you meet famous people in an environment that's laid back, no pressure, where they can just chill and be themselves, there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to be friendly with them. Especially if they're just genuinely nice people.
As a rock/metal musician, I really appreciate your analysis on Serj. He's so unique. One band that you might be interested in analyzing is Trivium. Their vocalist, Matt Heafy, has overcome vocal issues over the years and is still going strong. He's also an active streamer on Twitch and would be an awesome interview for Tea Time. Every time I've talked with him at shows, he always comes off as a very down-to-earth and thoughtful guy. Some songs you might consider reviewing are "The Sin and the Sentence," "Catastrophist," "In Waves," and "Into the Mouth of Hell We March." Keep up the great work!
I 2nd Trivium. I might also suggest some of their older stuff...Specifically Gunshot to the head to trepidation. He had little technique there and that caused him to blow his voice out, but their playing is so good considering they were all really young then.
Serj's voice really is so unique, he has the ability to send us on a rollercoaster of emotions in just one song. I recommend 'Sugar' or 'Spiders' which are both fantastic songs too. SOAD are in a league of their own 🤘😀
Your speaking mannerisms, emotes, diction, smile, giggle, and even hand motions while speaking remind me very strongly of someone with whom I've spent a lot of time. It's adorable and endearing. I really like listening to and watching you talk, and the fact that it's about a topic for which I'm passionate makes it even better. At this point, I've watched a few of your videos; love your content!
If only everybody was as open to different music as she is, maybe we wouldn’t grow up feeling like the weird excluded metal kid or even group Ma’am, you’re fucking awesome!
There will come the time when you react to "Spiders", Elizabeth. Can't wait! I've been listening to Toxicity for about 14 years and I'm so glad that you could point all these good things about Serj's vocals. I appreciate even more his vocals after your analyze.
One of the things I love about Liz is her total lack of self-consciousness in her behavior! Despite being a world-class opera singer and vocal coach, she is entirely unafraid of going goofy where appropriate! I haven't heard any OTHER music reactors use expressions like "Wackawackawaka!" and "Boogaboogabooga!" in their examinations! And I love that! I really hope she does "Chop Suey!" (the music video) next!
Might want to check out The Fairy Voice Mother. She not only is able to analyze in a quirky way,She also is able to produce a lot of these vocalists sounds from death growls to Dimash.
If you like how she reacts to this, check out any video where she's reacting to/analyzing anything with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. She gets absolutely giddy on those.
One of the greatest drum performances ever! Love your take on some of my fav. Music! I wouldn't be surprised if Serg would talk to you about it! It would be a great video!
I love how genuinely interested you are, and you can tell not just by your words but your body language and micro spasms around the eyes. Legit appreciate your deep dive into the vocals specifically. Never been able to play an instrument but I’ve always enjoyed singing. To hear the mechanical viewpoint is so different and refreshing, thank you. "Toxicity" Is definitely a 21st classic metal album if there ever was one. It sounds as fresh today as it did when it came out almost 21 years ago. I absolutely recommend you checking out "Spiders" and "Sugar" from their self-titled debut album. Sadly, the "Toxicity" album had the misfortune of being released on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. Despite being Armenian-Americans, in the aftermath of the attacks the band faced racism because they looked different and had "funny" sounding names. Also, after 9/11 their single, "Chop Suey!", which came out in August 2001, was pulled from radio play due to having the line "self-righteous suicide" which people associated with the attacks.
I was suppose to see them, Slipknot, Mudvayne and American Head Charge on 9-17-01 on the Pledge of Allegiance tour. The whole tour was canceled a few days after 9-11. i think they made a live album from some of the few shows the actually played
I love how excited you get when listening to all these songs. Your enthusiasm is infectious and I love it. Thanks for giving everyone the time and breakdowns they deserve!
The way you seem absolutely giddy over everything you're hearing in their music is making me so happy. I can see the sparks going off in your mind, and it's magical.
Being married to an Armenian, I have learned quite a bit about SOAD and the meaning behind their songs. If you want to listen to a really passionate song from them, check out "holy mountains". If you care to hear some traditional Armenian folk songs spoken in their native language, there's a group called "Gata Band". The live performance video posted 4 years ago on their channel showcases the talent of one of the founders of Gata Band "Garegin Arakelyan". I don't speak much Armenian myself but the music from Gata Band is truly beautiful. There's no words to describe Armenian traditional instruments.
one of my favorites by them, she talks about breath control at the end of the song and where Serj really shows it off is in Holy Mountains as it picks up again right before the end. Such a beautiful song.
I always get literal chills over this song, no difference if I'm on a walk, listening to it with my friends or watching a vocal analysis here, it's just so much emotions connected with the sound, and the lyrics being relatable as eff, that make this song one of the best in history.
The first time you heard that bridge and said "woah" Genuinely made me smile, as that's what I did the first time I heard it over 20 years ago. Awesome to see you experience this, and love how genuine you are with how impressed by their direction even if it may or may not be your taste in music - keep up the great content, I'm new here but have gone back through loads of your videos and loving them all
It’s honestly insane to me how much new appreciation I can find watching you analyze songs/bands that I’ve listened to for decades, seen live countless times, and even covered myself as a musician. I’m sure a lot of fellow musicians can agree that we tend to pick apart every aspect of the music that we love and yet somehow seeing you experience said music for yourself, especially with your own background and training outside of these genres, sheds a light on fantastic little nuances that I never would have and still to this day hadn’t picked up on. A lot of reaction/analysis videos can be blatantly disingenuous but your clear and genuine excitement makes these videos such a treat to experience while also bringing that new found love and appreciation for music that I’ve already loved and appreciated for years. After I finish your videos I find myself wanting to pick up my guitar and go back and relearn some of these phenomenal pieces of music. Keep up the wonderful work! 🤘🏻
This lady looks like she is listening to a pleasant song in a garden of flowers, taking a break from reading a book when she hears this song. How she doesnt immediately shift into metalhead mode and headbang is a mystery to me. This song just MOVES me physically.
not everyone's physical reaction to metal is to headbang...metal makes my spine sway more than it makes me want to headbang tbh everyone reacts to music differently
I don't dance, I'm from the town in Footloose. But the music moves me internally. I think people kind of gatekeep with genres of music when they feel someone has to look or act a certain way just to support it.
Another song that I believe goes unnoticed by him is “Empty Walls” by Serj. He puts so much passion in to the song and it’s amazing, sadly I don’t think a lot of people know about it, compared to their more popular songs at least.
That is one of things I love about SOAD: They have TWO amazing vocalists that couldn't be more different and interesting each. I love music that's really hard, but at the same time is beautiful, melodic and complex!
And what sucks is that they are also pretty different in real life too, so they clash a lot. You can hear both of their "bands" (well serj just went solo) and you can see the two differences in style, and even if they are great, the mashing of the two is what makes soad complete perfection. Like everytime I hear scars or serj's solo stuff, it's like im missing SOMETHING (even if they are 10/10!! cant stop praising them lol)
The way you so fully take in the music, body and spirit. To see you literally moved and gasping, experiencing music that has touch my life so long ago. I felt the purest nostalgia of the first time listening to this album as I watched your eyes widen in astonishment, weeping the entire time watching this video. Thank you
seeing how tickled you are by Serj's vocals is fun to watch! ive been enjoying these guys for so long, its nostalgic. Getting to see a sophisticated theory/scientific analysis of the vocals is amazing!
System of a Down is going to be the gift that keeps on giving for this channel. You could spin a wheel with every track they ever recorded listed on it and regardless of where it stops you'll find something cool to talk about
I'll never, ever get tired of seeing the physical, visceral reactions you have to such a wide array of music. Never stop, Elizabeth! You should check out Serj's solo work as well. I recommend Empty Walls.

Another guy worth analyzing is Mike Patton, he's also a guy that can do whatever he likes with his voice, from crooning to metal heavy distorted voice and even using his voice in the soundscape...On first faith no more albums he had a very nasal sound, but he kept evolving to be more and more versatile. Hard to tell one song, but look at the Live at BBC of their song Sunny Side Up, they are already older, but we can see how he still can get a variety of tones with his voice.. Midlife Crisis , Land of Sunshine and Just a Man are other of my favorites... his work with Fantomas and Mr Bungle are very interesting as well...
Mike Patton would be awesome i've been a patton fan since my youngest age barely 4 or 5 years old and I was banging on Mr Bungle - Carousel. Yeah what kind of parents would let their little boy listen to Mr Bungle (people that don't understand a word in english). Thanks to that i was never really terrified of psycho clowns.
you realise that Faith no More had more than one vocalist? what you refer to with oldest albums is Chuck Mosley, most probably. but I couldn't agree less. Mike Patton's voice is magnificent!
Always love the genuine giggles, when discovering something new and cool. "I really like what he's doing" Chop Suey is a very popular SOAD song. The song I-E-A-I-A-I-O might be an interesting reaction, since the chorus is all vowels. It's a short song, and not all that progressive, but the verses are also tongue twisters.
SOAD has been my favorite band for 16 years. I'm glad for being able to experience it again with the reaction of such a professional, kind and sensitive person. Congrats for the great work.
Lost in Hollywood I am beyond thrilled you're doing System and may do more. You literally cannot go wrong with any of their songs. Right now, my favorite of theirs is Lost in Hollywood. You were talking about Toxicity and how it is a mix of toxic and city. Well, Lost in Hollywood probably will add more context for you. Also, if you get the chance, do check out their live performance of Toxicity. In the bridge to the chorus you were breaking down, the band does a special little piece for the audience. Pretty cool. Thank you, and looking forward to more!
I love Lost in Hollywood, also. And Stealing Society. ❤️ but I honestly think Question! Is my favorite..Chop Suey is, too. Well, I can’t decide 😂❤️ but I get lost in Question! ‘S riffs.
i love these types of videos it makes me feel like i'm experiencing the song for the first time all over again and i hear new things that ive never noticed before its incredible
A lot of people will reccomend Chop Suey, and it is a great song, but Sugar is more interesting from a vocal perspective. It shows off so many weird sounds Serj can pull out.
Honestly, I'm still to found a vocalist with the crazy amounts of expresivity Serj has. I honestly thing that the only other singer capable of rivaling his technique, talent, and musicality is Freddy. He is unique. Both Chop Suay and Sugar will make that girl go nuts, I hope she analyses both.
I think the thing I love most about Serj Tankian is his grasp of melody regardless of what technique he's using at any one time. Whether gentle or loud, clean or distorted, whispered or screamed, those beautiful melodies are always there, sparkling, shining and cutting through bullshit like diamonds, and aimed directly at the heart. An amazing talent!
Oh my god... what a great memories with this fantastic song, I remember when I was 16 years old, i just spend my time listening to this album of Sistem of a down, i was really mad for this song and the way that Serj sings. It made me feel so powerful and fun. Wow. I didn’t notice all those details that you pointed about his vocal tecnique, it was very interesting and i loved it, congratulations for this reaction, you did a great job, not dude, you’re a professional 😊👍🏻👌🏻😉
I didn't see anyone mention it, but Serj is a trained opera singer. That's why his control is on another level. Everything is orchestrated to fit the narrative they're conveying in their song and showcase the lyric's message.
He was in a team that sang opera in Armenia. Rumours say he is a well trained opera singer, he might be, but he is not using any of those techniques in his SoaD-performances. Rumours said that Freddie Mercury was a trained opera singer too, but it shows he took some classical piano courses in Mumbai only. Serj has not said it himself and until he does I do not buy the "trained opera singer" story. Does it matter though? He is an amazing singer! And that is what matters, no matter what training he had.
@@berringervids You say he's not using any of those techniques, but isn't he? Breath control, vibrato on demand, dynamics, dead-on pitch control, these are many things that are demanded of opera singers. He doesn't "sound like" a traditional opera singer, but he's not singing traditional opera here either.
The whole opera training thing is a myth. In several interviews from the last year to promote his solo ep, he discusses how he has never had any formal music training. He's only been in only other band, with daron called Soil, and he started out playing keys. He considers himself to be a poet, and singing to be a great way to delivery his poetry. Don't get me wrong, i am a huge fan. But it's natural talent and not proper training. From what i understand, his lack of training is a huge factor in why they don't play many shows any more. The screaming and growly bits really hurt him. He just doesn't want to sing like that anymore.
@@twelveeighteenofficial7487 Well a operasinger that sings metal still uses the techniques of singing, but you can easily see and hear that he is not a well trained opera singer. The concert where he is dressed in white and sings with an orchestra is excellent as an example. Don't get me wrong, he has a great voice and I truly love it. But the opera-training-part is humbug I think.
If I remember correctly, "Chop Suey" was the one that got everyone's attention "Sugar" and "Spiders" had been out for a bit, and I can remember people were weirded out by their 1st album, but in a very positive way... very unique Many didn't know about the 1st album until "Toxicity" Memorize / Hypnotize came out separately but are 1 album (The way they designed the albums to attach to one another is really cool) and it really seems like 1 long song the way they do the intro of "Soldier side" and then end with the full track on the 2nd disc I recommend doing a reaction to the full 2 disc set Sadly, it's only just over an hour, and leaves you begging for more... but it has to be one of the best pieces of work from ANY group The complexity and talent put into it is AWEsome Someone on your "Aerials" video had said that you can't go wrong with any of their songs, and for the most part, they're correct They always have a way of surprising you and giving you something you haven't quite heard before 1 of the best things to ever happen to music FURSURE! Thankyou so much for putting so much time into your videos 🎼🎵🎶🎸🎶🎵🎼
The transition into the 'mosh part' and the transition out of it is freaking beautiful. I just knew that I dig this song, never understood why. This is one big part why
The change in time signature you hear in the bridge portion of the song is actually a syncopation trick often used by drummers to be able to play to two (or more) counts at the same time. In this case, the crash cymbal is doing triplets while the snare and bass drum are doing a standard 4 count. The reason it works is because the counts meet at the 12 count. It's a neat little maths trick, and I, as a drummer, am glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

Spiders is a high recommend for taking it way back, and hearing Serj's range in the early stage of System. I think that was the only "soft" track on that album haha.
One of the reasons I love this song is the way the song comes to a crescendo with the final chorus. The variations of the chorus leading up to the final, most powerful one. 10/10 goated song.

Serj's voice is great, there's no denying that, but the drums are what makes "Toxicity" so brilliant!
The Greatest steering wheel drum along song I've ever heard
nah..it's the combination
This tune was always about drums for me. The snare sound is fantastic and every 4th bar in the verse there is a slightly longer pause between the final snare and bass drum hits of the fraze. I adore that tiny detail. Drum covers on YT miss it or embellish the beat in their own way ruining it in my eyes. This beat is so perfect it needs to be played like on the recording.
SOAD's drummer is what makes me want to buy a drum kit and learn to play. I grew up playing Chop Suey on Rockband's drumset, and that beat is still to this day stuck in my head.

The song is according to them, talking about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. "Somewhere between the sacred silence (a divine nonexistent stillness of thought/noise) and sleep, disorder x3" describing that all waking hours are disorder.

Cool story. Serj lives in New Zealand now. A couple years ago he built a new recording studio on his land. My brother was there every day for 2 week's land moving and laying the slab. Long story short they got along really well as they bonded politically and my brother didn't treat him like a celebrity. Especially if they're just genuinely nice people.

we definitely need more Serj... Chop Suey by SOAD is a must, and I think Empty Walls (solo) would be great as well
100% needs to listen to Chop Suey
came here to say this!
Empty walls live is just perfection
Second this Chip suey for lyrics, music and topic need to be next
I second Empty Walls, just such a great song
"Chop Suey!" is a great and quite diverse song with good lyrics. It would be great if you could do an analysis on it!

There's something about your reviews that is just so heart warming, how excited you get when listening to music I just LOVE IT !
There will come the time when you react to "Spiders", Elizabeth. Can't wait!
I've been listening to Toxicity for about 14 years and I'm so glad that you could point all these good things about Serj's vocals. I appreciate even more his vocals after your analyze.
Spiders is such an incredible song. I remember hearing it for the first time in the late 90s. It captured me.
Best comment, shes awesome

"I-E-A-I-A-I-O, Deer Dance, Sugar, Boom, Prison Song". They have so many unique songs and his vocal gymnastics are fun to listen to.

Also, after 9/11 their single, "Chop Suey!", which came out in August 2001, was pulled from radio play due to having the line "self-righteous suicide" which people associated with the attacks.
the album was released on sept 4th, not to take away from everything else you had said.
Same with the song Let the bodies hit the floor by drowning pool. Got pulled around the same time
God hates us all from slayer was released on 9/11/01
I was suppose to see them, Slipknot, Mudvayne and American Head Charge on 9-17-01 on the Pledge of Allegiance tour. The whole tour was canceled a few days after 9-11. i think they made a live album from some of the few shows the actually played
Not metal, but definitely one of the 2000s heavy music’s best bands.
I love how excited you get when listening to all these songs. Your enthusiasm is infectious and I love it. Thanks for giving everyone the time and breakdowns they deserve!
This might be one of my favorites you’ve done. Love SOAD. Used to go to bed listening to them. Lol Incredible

The giddy excitement you are showing going over Serg's voice is what I feel whenever I hear him sing. I love hearing what I feel be put into words!
I like the little dances and faces he makes, heh.
The last long growl at 16:45 where Serj is changing his tone at the end to sound even more aggressive is probably one of his best vocal performances.

I'm not Armenian but everytime I hear "holy mountains" it makes me want to fight for them
"Im married to an Armenian" means you can empathize and relate to the subjugation of these people right? STFU with your nonsense GTFO
As a turk,I love soad.I have a question,is that "holy mountains" about Ararat Mountain
one of my favorites by them, she talks about breath control at the end of the song and where Serj really shows it off is in Holy Mountains as it picks up again right before the end. Such a beautiful song.
@@ilhanburak3590 yeah, that’s the mountain
Very well put ... I totally agree... She's a treasure...
I noticed a subtle bob going this time 🙂
Yeah it’s one of those songs that makes me immediately want to mommy body and my head bc it just gives so energy

You have fully articulated why I’m such a fan of this band. Pure eargasm.
Another song that I believe goes unnoticed by him is “Empty Walls” by Serj. He puts so much passion in to the song and it’s amazing, sadly I don’t think a lot of people know about it, compared to their more popular songs at least.
The video is just haunting too
That album is criminally underrated
This.
"Elect The Dead" is a must album for all SOAD fans!
Great song.
That is one of things I love about SOAD: They have TWO amazing vocalists that couldn't be more different and interesting each. I love music that's really hard, but at the same time is beautiful, melodic and complex!
Serj and Daron’s harmonies sound like heaven on earth
I love Daron's voice as well
And what sucks is that they are also pretty different in real life too, so they clash a lot.
Thank you

System of a Down is going to be the gift that keeps on giving for this channel. You could spin a wheel with every track they ever recorded listed on it and regardless of where it stops you'll find something cool to talk about
Serj's solo stuff is really good. "Sky is over" and "Empty walls" you ought to check it out.

This is a great suggestion. Patton can do much with his voice so lots of material for videos and comparisons.
I’d love to see an analysis of anything from Fantômas Suspended Animation album 😂
Yes, 💯
you realise that Faith no More had more than one vocalist? what you refer to with oldest albums is Chuck Mosley, most probably. but I couldn't agree less. Mike Patton's voice is magnificent!
Its always a pleasure seeing him smiling while singing. that shows how he enjoys what he is doing in almost every video of them.
The initial reaction and "geek out" was, no lie, how I felt the first time hearing this album. Also, the facial expressions are EVERYTHING!!!
The facial espressions are why we're here my dood!!! :)
Lost in Hollywood
I am beyond thrilled you're doing System and may do more.
Yes yes yes! Lost in Hollywood! I loose myself in that song 🤘
I love Lost in Hollywood, also. And Stealing Society. ❤️ but I honestly think Question! Is my favorite..Chop Suey is, too. Well, I can’t decide 😂❤️ but I get lost in Question! ‘S riffs.

If we're talking about weird sounds from Serj, why not also recommend BYOB

@@deighvheart9717 Well, there was also the political schism with their former drummer that the rest of the band finds difficult to tolerate.

So true
It's 'too far'.
If I remember correctly, "Chop Suey" was the one that got everyone's attention
"Sugar" and "Spiders" had been out for a bit, and I can remember people were weirded out by their 1st album, but in a very positive way... very unique
Many didn't know about the 1st album until "Toxicity"
Memorize / Hypnotize came out separately but are 1 album (The way they designed the albums to attach to one another is really cool)
and it really seems like 1 long song the way they do the intro of "Soldier side" and then end with the full track on the 2nd disc
I recommend doing a reaction to the full 2 disc set
Sadly, it's only just over an hour, and leaves you begging for more... but it has to be one of the best pieces of work from ANY group
The complexity and talent put into it is AWEsome
Someone on your "Aerials" video had said that you can't go wrong with any of their songs, and for the most part, they're correct
They always have a way of surprising you and giving you something you haven't quite heard before

BYOB also is one that people love for the groovy jam track waving in and out of the metal rifts.
What about "steal this album"? So many great songs on that album.
That's awesome! Thanks for that, now I can go back and appreciate that bit more.
Thank you for sharing that
