Could I ask for a favor? You most likely won't react to gushing over magical girls, right?
If so, would you cover the theme song (my dream girls) and the epic battle theme (bring it on) anyway? Would love to listen to a cover of those.
Same. This was the episode that did it. Loved Lihua's new relationship with Maomao, even though she's another consort's lady.
Flagellation is flogging.....so he got whipped.
Ah yes, the episode where I went from liking Maomao to absolutely loving her. What a great, well written feamle character.
One of the best written female characters in a very long time! Compared to other animes it's so refreshing to watch a character like her
@@JewJitSuSixty9l agree with you here my friend she Queen and amzing l love his show ❤
The slap was so satisfying. Not only was the maid preventing Maomao from helping Lihua and doing the job the emperor assigned to her, she was also actively poisoning Lihua because she was too damn proud and arrogant
Possibly the greatest slap in anime history
I don't know man. That one from Golden Time was sooooo good too!
So powerful that even that servant's ancestors probably have felt it up to the fifth generation.
One thing to consider is that almost certainly, when the white powder was first confiscated, they didn't tell everyone that it was poison, since that would probably have the opposite effect, with people hiding away their supply to use as poison later. So what they announced publicly was probably something vague like "the white powder is banned now, everyone hand it over the authorities". So it's very possible that Lihua's ladies-in-waiting assumed the banning was some sort of political thing (e.g. some other concubine got it banned to undermine Lihua) and had no idea it was poisonous.
I don't know if that's the case, though. When Maomao was talking to Xiaolan early on in the episode, she specifically said "the powder's poison might still be in her system". Xiaolan called it the poisonous powder herself, and didn't seem at all surprised by the revelation. If she knows about it, I can't imagine nobody else does. Maomao also addresses the lady-in-waiting as if she should have known, saying things like "don't you understand why this stuff was banned?"
@@ZaberFangAT It's possible the rumor got out after the initial confiscation, and it's possible that Lihua's ladies-in-waiting had already decided it was political and assumed the poison rumor was part of the political effort to ban the powder. The show doesn't really tell us, so all we can do is theorize.
While that might seem plausible. Hiding it would cause more harm than good for them no? If they're smart enough to realize that. And it's not like this is a free land of democracy. I assume the emperor has every right to force people to give it over no matter the reason, and if they're caught it's an automatic death anyway. Too risky. And there's easier way to poison than using a specific powder - that slims down the suspects to the high class women who could afford it.
Or… people explained why the white powder was banned, but someone aiming to get rid of concurrence came after and spread the fake news that it was a scheme to evict all concubines who needed it.
@@DarwinAwardWinner yeah but that ruins the entire moral point of the scene. the point is that they are arrogant and don't listen to her because of her social standing. (also didn't gyo tell lil and the maids about it in episode one)? that is a really cool fact though about the powder so thank you.
maomao is definately the type of character who does not get involved in other people's works but has her own rules which she can't stand being broken.
Fun fact: Lady Lihua, the concubine starring this ep, is voiced by Yui Ishikawa, also renown for voicing 2B from "Neir:Automata", Violet from "Violet Evergarden", and Mikasa from "Attack on Titan"!
6:00 replay button because sameeee!!!
14:26 a really good point, her growth probably has been stunted. not only from growing up kinda impoverished but also her experimentations & all the poison she's ingested
for someone hyper aware of her "position" and always keeping a low profile to explode like that, she must've been really frustrated. she definitely cares more than she lets on. another great reaction and discussion! ❤
just keep in mind that in asia there are quite a lot of adult people who are flat in one or more areas and also short
@@Chris3s yeah definitely that too
THIS EPISODE has:
Story 10/10
Action 11/10
Animation 12/10
The animation was so fluid. It was so unnecessarily amazing
Animation was so good. Even subtle things like Maomao's change in expression at 7:08 can convey what's going on in her head without saying it.
How funny is it that Maomao casually taught Lihua a technique that would get you guys demonitized if you said it out loud?
The ladies-in-waiting working for Lihua weren't just being mean to fulfill a trope. There is logic (misguided as it was) within the world/culture for their actions. Of course, at the core of it, there is the rivalry among the concubines. So any lady with loyalty to the concubine she serves will be fiercely loyal and protective of her. Their duty is, after-all, to fulfill the wishes and protect the interests of their concubine. To make her the best and catch the eye of the Emperor. Furthermore, if the concubine becomes the "head wife" and bears the male successor to the Emperor, it comes with benefits for everyone serving under that concubine and her household, too. The ladies under Lihua were, in their own way, trying to protect Lihua from an outsider they perceived as a loyal lady-in-waiting to a rival concubine. And, as I mentioned, any loyal lady-in-waiting will be thinking of how best to benefit the concubine she serves and assume that of another lady-in-waiting of a rival.
So of course there was distrust because of MaoMao's association with Gyokuyo. They had no idea if her ideas were truly beneficial for Lihua, or if MaoMao was instead serving in the interests of Gyokuyo. They did know the Emperor commanded MaoMao to be there, but such a request was also viewed (by their own point of view, if unintentional or unavoidable consequence of the Emperor's request) as a backhanded way of saying they were failing at their duty to care properly for Lihua. Their only duty. If they can't even do that right, what good are they? Why should they be kept around? That would be a massive blow to their own pride and life's purpose, as well as say they are inferior to Gyokuyo's ladies-in-waiting. Which would only further make Lihua look bad for having such incompetent women around her, too. So it made Lihua look bad and all the ladies would likely also fear their own jobs being at stake if Lihua fired them. Being fired and sent away from the palace would be shameful. An embarrassment these women and their families would struggle to overcome. Public perception is a massive thing in this culture. It could affect their father's business or work life, it could damage their chances at a good marriage, there are plenty of awful repercussions for such a dismissal.
So all of these women serving Lihua were stubbornly acting the way they were for the purpose of protecting Lihua and themselves. They were doing what they thought was best, with the "nutritious food" and trying to dress her up with makeup and such to try to maintain some of her beauty and make her less sickly looking, should the Emperor come by to visit her. However, they aren't doctors. They've likely never cared for a truly sick person in their lives. Or, if they have, only knew how to address simple colds and such. Nothing like poison. But they carried on, believing that they could and would help Lihua without outside help. They didn't need to risk Lihua with the "aid" of Gyokuyo's lady-in-waiting, who could just as easily sabotage Lihua instead to benefit Gyokuyo.
Other concubines really could not easily trust one another. The concubines (as well as the households the concubines came from) would all be vying for power and to see one particular concubine bear the Emperor a male successor. The advantages are too massive to have the future Emperor come from your bloodline. Which is why things like poison-tasters are employed. The very lives of the concubines are at stake if the the concubine or her ladies-in-waiting let their guard down against any political or spiteful schemes.
However, seeing MaoMao get so angry for Lihua's sake was the wake-up call they needed to shatter their pride and knock down their blinders to the full scope of their situation. They (especially the lady-in-waiting in charge of her makeup) finally understood their stupid but well-intended actions were killing Lihua, not helping her. They were doing the absolute worst thing they could for the lady they were suppose to protect. Once they had their eyes forcefully opened about the dangers of the makeup powder as MaoMao's harsh but true words and her palm beat that realization into them, they finally understood that MaoMao was actually there for Lihua's well-being.
And once they also understood that Lihua's sickness was poisoning and not a normal illness, they accepted their ignorance and turned to MaoMao's knowledge on how to heal someone in such a serious condition. At that point, they all knew how dire things were and ALL of them had their lives on the line if Lihua died. The lady-in-waiting in charge of make-up especially would have likely been charged with murder and executed for continuing to use the banned makeup. The household she came from could also be implicated in her actions and suffer consequences, too. Like her family would be turned into pariahs and be socially and financially destroyed, left destitute and no one would dare help someone who angered the Emperor. Or they'd be banished. Or even executed along with her for treachery.
Also keep in mind that these ladies-in-waiting aren't all that well educated most of the time. MaoMao benefited from having her teacher/father providing her all sorts of useful knowledge and about the sciences. She was taught all sorts of things and be logical when faced with things in the world. The ladies-in-waiting don't understand or comprehend things the way we (as modern day viewers) do or MaoMao does. They were taught only what they needed to know about cleaning, cooking, fashion, makeup, and anything else that might serve their concubine's needs. They would have no idea about weakened stomachs. Eating what you normally eat when healthy is how to become healthy again seems logical in the eyes of the ladies-in-waiting. They also don't understand why the makeup powder was banned. Just that it was because it bore risks they didn't understand. It's almost like us in modern days eating junk food or smoking. We have heard such things are not good for us, but do it anyway because of whatever justification we create for ourselves. We do things like minimize the risk in our minds that it isn't as serious as reported or arrogantly think we can escape the consequences. Ultimately, a person decides the excuse to continue is greater than the risks, thus refuses to stop. The ladies-in-waiting were doing the same thing. They didn't understand the severe dangers of the banned powder, didn't mentally connect that the illness was the result of the powder, and/or refused to acknowledge just how bad it was, thus continued to use it because that powder worked better than any other in making Lihua beautiful.
goddamn. I was reading this comment but then I clicked read more
i love how maomao used her whole arm and elbow for the best anime slap of all time ❤
Maomao is the GOAT. She's right up there with Frieren and Fern for best characters of the year.
I really appreciate when youtubers react to anime that are not shonen. I love shonens but there are so many great anime in different genre to explore like this one! So its nice to see. Great video 👍
6:02 I haven't seen quite this drastic of a reaction from you guys yet. :))))) Hilarious. It is indeed quite the surprising moment (I remember it too).
6:00 hell of a gasp 😲
The concubine DOES love the Emperor, shes just not too happy that the emperor can't keep his love for her only because of his many other concubines
This episode is still, till today, my absolute favorite. Both the writing and animation is excellent and masterful but the most commendable to me is the pacing. Heavy and soothing, solemn. There's grief and yearning in the air, and hope for healing. That end scene with Lihua caressing her head told so much gratitude, and we can _feel_ that. Honestly any and every anime/show who understands how to utilize a quiet moment is superb to me. Ghibli is great at this as well.
Woo let's goo!! I think from last episode that Gyokuyuo said she was envious was because she had wanted the emperor to herself, but knowing she can't because of his status 🤔 but i could be wrong i dunno. love seeing how you reacted to the slap is perfect and the dragging of the hair. Maomao was fed up with their pride & ignorance Lady Lihua's life was on the line. Teaching her the perfect lesson :3 Maomao also said she misjudged Lady Lihua, and that she had a personality fitting a concubine meaning she respected her again. The way i cackled when you said it's a ✨Rave ✨
That's possible. It's also possible that Gyokuyou had no choice but to be sold by her family as the emperor's consort. Even if she were to fall in love with someone else and concoct a plan to escape the rear palace, too many people (her father, whole family line, and everyone in her homeland) will suffer. Even a mere change in the emperor's feelings, if she ceases to be the emperor's favorite... it would change the trade deals with her homeland.
6:00 This scene could be from a Soap Opera, but it hits like a truck.
Everyone who is watching this episode: SLAP ME TOO, MAOMAO!!!
this episode is honestly my favorite, it's so badass seeing maomao that angry and also sweet because she was angry because the ladies in waiting were making lady lihua sick, it also shows that lady lihua is also sweet, she was just distressed because of her son being sick before
6:00 I watched all but this reactions are I've been waiting for😏 and what a great reaction!
Mao Mao teaching the paizuri! Love that scene
She teaching whattt? Is that what she saying???? 😂😂
@@aliffaiman614yeppp! It absolutely is what she's teaching.
@@aliffaiman614yeah she basically teaching Lady Lihua how to use her "assets" more creatively 😅😅😅
@@aliffaiman614 yep it is implied kind off
We all love Maomao. And I understand the hate for Jinshi. But I like how this is written. His character has so much more to offer and i cant wait to see your reactions.
4:50 in the dub he said "If it helps I could come inside"
8:15 Flagellation is being beaten by a rod, whip or a cat o nine tails. If you want an example of what it looks like watch Pirates of the Carribean 2 where Will is whipped by his father.
OH! I'm so glad you guys are watching Apothecary Diaries, it's SO good 🐱
8:12 In case you're still wondering, flagullation is a sever beating.
in the manga the scene felt even more savage :)
Ahhh now I understand why I started watching this. Probably you guys appeared on my feed and I subconsciously got interested in this anime. I think I finished the whole thing in 4 days. It's really really good.
I am just here to watch you guys react to Maomao become Queen @ 6:00. Glad I did. Made my day❤
D'awww, I wish you guys could have watched this while it was airing, same with Frieren.
Good news is that even though we’re late to the party, you all get 3 reactions per week instead of 1! 🙂
I loved the animation in this episde. It's crazy to me how people said this episode lacked it ?? not only that but this was basially a hidden anime that wasn't really popular and for that to still havs such a good animation is so cool.
maomao is an icon and a legend.
That slap looked like a haymaker, damn, Maomao be throwin hands 😂
Flagelation is being punish by wips. Not having junk does not make 50/200 wips lach goes easier on your back/torso...
Don't know if anyone touched on this for you guys, but flagellation is an old punishment where the accused/offender is whipped with a tool such as a Cat o' Nine Tails or a strap of leather with nails embedded in them in order scrape and lacerate the skin while effectively whipping them at the same time on multiple points on the back. It's a much more brutal form of the whipping punishments/torture we are familiar with back in older times of America.
In other cultures however, some people use self-flagellation with the same tools as a means of using the pain as discipline and focus. However, this is viewed as archaic and unnecessary, given the differential circumstances of back then and now.
Regarding Gyokuyou’s feelings for Emperor,
She is much younger than the Emperor 35 vs late teens?
She was not a childhood friend of the Emperor
Her “marriage” was political not sentimental
She does not hate him and enjoys her time with him as well as their daughter
She knows he (and she) have duties but still feels sympathy rather than jealous hate of other consorts
I suspect she and the Emperor wanted Maomao to help consort Lihua.
As with all political marriages between strangers their feeling will evolve as they share life and family.
It’s a bit interesting the compare young passion/love burning bright vs love and respect growing over time. Which is better?
Mao Mao tiene 17 años en ese momento
Remember most courtisan are noble ladies of stature. Their ladies in waiting are usualy a mix of friends, family friends, family servant and, often, daughter of nobles of lower stature vassal to them. Other than family servant (sometime) you can lack 'common people common sense' and practical knowledge about thing servent would do for you before becoming ladies-in-waiting.
the episode that got me hooked lets goooo
Flagellation is whipping. I at first thought that he died, but later they say something about him getting his job back.
So the eunuch was punished with being heavily whipped.. From other historical dramas I've watched, he was probably lucky to be alive considering his negligence put one of the emperor's main wives at death's door. Especially as that same powder killed the emperor's son. Considering that? He probably unalived.
Beautiful sweater, Carlie.
Thank you! 🥰
honestly, if Maomao just reported the things the ladies in waiting did to her when she was trying to heal Lady Lihua, they would probably get their head chopped off right on the spot lol.
They're lucky Maomao is a person who doesnt like to escalate things unless necessary, to me at least.
Flagellation means he was flogged/whipped in punishment.
7:39 It's all common sense stuff to us now, but at the time even basic medical knowledge wouldn't be all that widespread. Remember, these people would still have a lot of superstitions around illness and disease.
8:13 Flagellation is whipping.
Happy Wednesday guys.
Its wednesday my dudes
I think jinshi and maomao are both 17 (or something close to that)
just fyi lihua has the same VA with mikasa😄
10:17 Look who's the one with the dirty mind...
I'm super late to watching these, but just curious if you learned or figured out that Gaoshun's VA is the same as Tengen's from Demon Slayer? :3
Maomao’s pimp hand is strong 💪🏾
that slap is immaculate✨🤌
Lady Lihua to Lady Paizuri
I feel like a perv for getting what technique Maomao taught Lihua literally instantly 😂 did you two get it quickly? Maybe they just dont wanna bring it up but alot of reactors dont seem to quite understand lol
Wanna do a video or play list with all your favorite covers?
È il mio episodio preferito della stagione ma l' anime è tutto bello fino la fine ❤ Maomao ha 17 anni 😊
Maomao is her!!!!!
let's go with Maomao with Jinshi❤
👍👍👍👍
Flagellation is whipping. She was whipped
She wasn't whipped. It was the eunuch (a man) that was tasked with confiscating all of the face powder that was whipped for, you know, NOT confiscating all of the face powder.
Chibi MaoMao has cat ears because her name means cat in Chinese~
Hey can u guys react to "grave of the fireflies ". Its a wonderful movie u should give it a try please 🥺🥺
Maomao's a girls girl haha. She's unassuming and non confrontational when there's no need to be, or if she can solve it without it. But she's a also woman of justice. Lihua doesn't deserve to die because of the ignorance of others. And especially not from a poison already banned and with an existing cure. I would be infuriated too.
Basically Maomao knows herself very well, and that might make it look like she's uncaring towards anything outside of her self interest, but her "flaw" is actually that she cares a lot lol. She just can't leave things alone if she can help it.
