It's mildly irritating how some of them were looking at Maomao being unable to even interact with Lihua and going like "well, I could explain that they wouldn't let me near her and that it's not my fault" as if that would actually matter. Back then, it really was (and in ways still is) that if you didn't get results, it's your fault, simple as that. Getting obstructed (Maomao), missing that one minor detail (the whipped eunuch), or not knowing better (the ladies-in-waiting) makes no difference to the primary issue.
I mean, I get that in this day and age the closest frame of reference people have still falls within socialist ideals but I don't think it's that hard to realize she's in a situation where things are genuinely beyond her control. She was in no position to take control on her own or ask for help from someone with higher authority, and while Jinshi's intervention helped save the day, it's something that might not happen normally (and definitely wouldn't if he had no interest in Maomao to begin with).
