Jinshi's hairpin in this case is more like saying, "She's under my protection now."
It could be but we can also assume that it means she's his property so no one could dare touch and harm her now.
Based on Gaoshu and the old lady from his house, Jinshi is a possessive man. Jinshi was also disappointed when Maomao didn't choose him to be his sort of like "benefactor" and chose another guy.
To add on, I think it’s a bit like ‘she has my favour’ too

Basically jinshi here told her he cares about her thats why the girls were all happy
Jinshi's pin is a message to the other men at the gathering, it says "hands off she's taken." He gives it to her after she references what can happen at brothels with violent customers, it worries him. It's a sign of protection through possession, to keep her from being hounded.
It's crazy that Gyokuyo's voice actress is Anya Forger and Frieren.
Ange's comment about Atsumi's range is spot on, she's very talented. But I can't help but hear some overlap between Chise from Magus Bride and Frieren. It probably helps that they're both melancholy characters though.

the hairpin does have multiple meanings, but in general and to put it simply it means favour. and this favour can be interpreted differently, e.g. seeing someone don a hairpin from a concubine or person with authority means they are under their protection because they have the favour of that person in power. other meanings will come up in the next episodes so i'll leave it to the show! ☺

I'll say what my theory about Jinshi was at the time (so it's not a spoiler for future episodes): Jinshi is clearly playing a role, so he must have some kind of secret identity. So his true identity is probably someone high enough up in the government power structure to actually have some influence on and responsibility for things like enforcement of kidnapping laws. Hence the apology for not preventing Maomao's kidnapping.

When Maomao said to Jinshi: "Why are you apologizing for not policing the streets? It's not YOUR responsibility (since you're just a young middle management eunuch in the rear palace)"
Jinshi still formally & sincerely apologizes. (His apology was not the same informality when one says a simple "I'm sorry"). Which implies that he is contradicting Maomao . He IS in a position to make change and enforce rules, but failed to do so.
Idk how you guys missed it when Maomao said it herself lol, she's not wearing make up to avoid the brothel life, but to prevent getting SA'd because ugly girls are less likely to be targeted by sexually frustrated men.
Other context:
1. Kidnapping is commonplace because children (able bodied person under the protection of parents) are commodities. It's legal for parents to sell their child to get some money and have the kid work, Maomao's reaction to it is still very odd though.
2. Courtesans (women that work in brothels) aren't only selling sexual services, most of them would offer (and be trained) in music, dancing, poetry, calligraphy and usual services like chatting and drinking together.
There are lots of power struggles and competition for favoritism so many things can happen. That's why they want to dress and stand out so that they don't lose to the other concubines. They are also at risk to dangers since they will be at an open space event.
Also Jinshi did not have a similar experience but feels bad that he couldn't do anything to prevent those bad things that happened to MaoMao because he cares for her. The hair pin many have explained basically it's to mark and let people know, 'this servant' belongs to someone so hands off unless you are of a higher rank then I have no choice.😆

She'll do it if she has too, but she doesn't hate it. It's just not within her list of interests. Maomao isn't a girly things hater. That's toxic. In fact she has a certain respect for extravagant things sometimes. Beauty is, after all, one of the biggest weapon of a woman in her time, and she grew around strong women who survived bc of this.
Yeah Anya/Gyukou/Frieren being the same VA is impressive since you can't really hear it.

Yes there’s always drama, conflict, schemes happening underneath what everyone can see in the palace. Everyone’s trying to either protect their position or want to rise up in the hierarchy. I actually would’ve loved if the anime followed the web novel which is harsher in storytelling but I still love this one too.

i'm still a bit salty the freckled weren't real, freckles are cute... but here its fake cause of course cant have the main character have "flaws"... i get why it was done for the story and maomao's character, but i dont like it, lol

She does get paid. She’s not a slave. The sold off part is more like coerced into a contract. I don’t know if it was mentioned yet but she’s working in the palace for a set amount of years after which she’s free to leave if she wants to. It’s just that most of her pay goes to her ‘family’ because that’s the whole reason why people in that time period would work away from home, to get money for their family. The problem was that the palace workers don’t care is she’s Actually their daughter or not. And in this case, one of ladies in waiting already made sure that the kidnappers won’t be getting the pay and she still gets her hazard pay for being a poison tester. I think they might be paying her or gifting her with something off screen in exchange for her time and effort (or at least that’s the way it’s supposed to go in this situation)
