Martin Heidegger: Being and Time

  • Martin Heidegger is arguably the most important philosopher in the past 150 years or so. Being and Time completely transformed the collective thinking around thought, existence, and our conception of time and it's relation to the human condition. He threw a wrench right in the middle of modern, enlightenment era thinkers, and their practice of ontology. He transformed the backdrop in which we analyze philosophy forever.
This is the first video in a three part series over Heidegger.

I've subsequently read that the young Heidegger embodied the trait of being "stunned" by everything he encountered, by the "mystery" of life; that he walked in a state of "being with" as opposed to being a mere "observer." He was like our great poets, for example, Wordsworth. What "was," what "is," is the view itself. The phenomena itself. And so, his dedicating his great book to Husserl.

You did a fabulous job not to sound too inauthentic, but you really did. I loved it! You will find the concept of "interbeing" in Buddhism (especially as explained by Thich Nhat Hanh) to be exactly the same as Heidegger. When I was five, I had a mystical experience of the shattering of self into the vastness of the cosmos, of being the cosmos. When my individual self reassembled, I felt this little consciousness didn't need to worry about anything because this "I" was all over the place.

awesome video man, i came across being and time as an undegrad writing a term paper on hegel. i opened the book, then quickly closed it and walked away, feeling that I may have some type of learning disability, because I couldn't comprehend any of it haha. just recently reread helgel's phenomenology of spirit and decided to roll back into epictetus for something a little easier, but this video makes me want to give Heidegger another shot. Im sure you have a lot of resources you use to help with deciphering these books, but I've found the routledge guidebooks on the great works to be immensely helpful with hegel, and keirkegaard. and lucky for me, theyve got one for being and time as well, WISH ME LUCK!

I’m currently writing my thesis on Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich, and Aśvaghoṣa’s Life of the Buddha. I introduce Heidegger’s model for authentic living because I find it useful for opening up relevant questions in regard to how confronting the reality of our deaths makes life more meaningful. This video was really helpful, because Heidegger is quite difficult to understand and simplify.

I'm no scholar but I have read a fair amount of Heidegger. I'd say you did a pretty good job encapsulating many of his key concepts - especially for a 20 min video. Thank you for your work.

I've never seen a better explanation of Heidegger, this is the first time I think I actually understand his philosophy!
