    Bells = Christmas...
    but if you take the ding and compress it a little bit, move it down an octave, and then dirty the sound up, it could be an electric guitar.

  • @jimmydim2212
    @jimmydim2212 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Andrew, 2-5-1 was extremely common in jazz pieces at the time, which is why it made its way to Christmas songs as well. If you pick up a Real Book (big collection of jazz standards, easy to find) you will see how 2-5-1 was a huge thing (and in both major and minor keys). Even today people study licks and phrases in jazz improvisation on this chord progression, it's a very standard but important excercise. Thanks for your time :)

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I guess that's what his point was - it was a common progression in the 40s and 50s when these classic Christmas songs were made (and jazz was pretty popular at that time), and that's why it's probably associated with "Christmas music". Today's pop rarely uses that progression, so using the progression creates an "older" sound.
      Sub-dominant - dominant - tonic (most commonly II-V-I or IV-V-I) is the basis of Western harmony, and everybody who studies music learns about it. It's one of the first things that you learn when it comes to how chord progressions work.

    • @travonace8675

    • @roygbiv1122

      It's also worth noting that using II as a subdominant wasn't just a trend. Jazz consists of a lot of sevenths, and functionally speaking, IV as a seventh doesn't work. This is because IV's seventh is the third degree of the scale (the most defining of tonic function), and using it gives the chord too much of a 'home' feel to be a subdominant. The II doesn't have this problem. An additional bonus of using the II chord is the fact that the bass's motion from II to V, in terms of intervals, is the same as the motion from V to I. This allows for a smoother resolution. The II-V is also much more flexible to some of the other techniques, such as substitute dominants, backdoor progressions, II-V series modulation, etc. In conclusion, the II was not the preferred subdominant solely as a "trend", but because it allowed musicians of that time to do all the other crazy stuff that makes jazz harmony so special.

    The bell was designed to make sound whenever the horse and thus the vehicle was in motion. [...] This was especially important for sleighs, which otherwise make almost no sound as they travel over packed snow, and are difficult to stop quickly.

    Damn, Andrew you blew my mind. I've always had basic music theory knowledge but I always thought, why make a whole song with theory if I can just play chords that sound well together and make a song out of them. The way you played with those chords by rearranging them and doing that cadence up just made it snap in my head. That's how I can use them, by playing with them.

    The Christmas and "Bells" connection comes from same same connection between the historical churches use of steeple bells and more importantly hand bells and hand bell choirs performing in celebration of the birth of Christ. Christmas (Christ-mas) and hand bells have been together for a very long time, hundreds of years. Celebrations and joy were historically announced with church bells ringing throughout the towns and cities. Special holiday and and Christmas themed music was often accompanied with bells, hand bells, tubular bells.... because they perfectly embodies and expressed a heavenly sense of wonder, joy and otherworldly expectation... and still do today.
    Great song. Great video. Love your vocalist voice!

    I think the association of Christmas with bels comes mostly from the snow sleigh pulled by horses in the winter time. This is especially prominent in Switzerland where many mountain regions are not accessible (allowed) by motorcar during the winter. Switzerland regards this as kind of a tradition and will continue to deny access by car to those sky resorts which means more horse sleighs to enjoy in the future.

  • @ThisIsPureEpicness
    @ThisIsPureEpicness 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People used to use bells on horses and such when travelling during winter so if a blizzard were to happen, you could hear if someone was approacing since you couldnt see very well in the blizzard. I think that is why we started to associate bells with christmas.

    I was recently discussing with friends and family about writing a successful christmas song and living on the royalties (not sincerely of course) and I boiled it down to this formula;
    6/8 time sig so people can easily bop and swing to it.
    Always fall back to root note.
    Bells bells and more bells.
    Middle of the road, love and seasonal based lyrics.
    I'd not yet explored the relationship between notes in xmas songs so this was an interesting watch, more experimenting to be done...

    The reason there's so many bells in Christmas music is because of Christmas's roots in religion. A church bell would signal the start of "service" on Christmas Eve, similar to how a church bell would signal the start of service during church. It also has to do with how in Great Britain church bells would be rung at midnight, and Christmas and Easter are the only two times Mass was allowed to be held at midnight. So it's traditional that church bells would be rung during that time, typically whenever a Priest says "Gloria".

    I definitely feel that bells and other metal percussion is very evocative of snow and, in general, ice. You get this in video games a lot too- there's often an ice level, and it's common to hear metal percussion in it. I think it's just because that's what we imagine ice to sound like? It kinda does, in certain circumstances. Like when you break an icicle and it shatters... What kind of sound is that...?

    My guess is that bells are in christmas music because we associate those church bells with christmas espacially in Germany where you get your gifts after you went to church so these sounds play into the anticipation part of christmas and then you have the ringing of the bells like you hear them on the sleigh obviously. And Glockenspiel is german and means bellgame.

      I think it's from sleigh bells, it sounds more like horses with bells on them walking rather than church bells to me.

      Right, bells are also associated with celebration a lot of the time, and Christmas is a huge celebration. I think that's a better explanation than twinkling snowflakes but I suppose that might add to the vibe too

    Great voice. She got me to forget about how much I hate Christmas for a minute.
    I just thought of something... Are there any dark Christmas songs out there? I can't think of one... What if you were to do the negative harmony flip thing with a Christmas song? Be careful it might summon a malevolent entity.
    Let's start a new genre for all the Christmas haters.
    Loved her voice...Still hate Christmas.

    Make a song with these lyrics:
    Somebody once told me the world had nothing for me,
    There ain’t a screw secure in your head,
    Why try anything at all,
    When life’s just one big brick wall,
    And your no one at all, never will be
    So the years keep coming and the years continue,
    The rules have been beaten they’ve hit and they’ve tricked you
    And is it better to live for fun?
    Since nothing matters when you’re dead and gone
    “So much to do, so much to say”
    But will anyone even miss you?
    Deep down you know your alone,
    Go ahead play on your phone...
    Hey there, you’re a dead star,switch your brain off, go home
    Quit now, while you’re behind, stop your dreaming, don’t moan
    Yes, all that glitter is gold,
    No, you’re not the star,
    You’re just some mould.
    Look around you
    Do you think life is fair?
    You do nothing, and whilst you act like you care-There are children dying, parents crying, but you drown them out with your whining,
    “I can’t do this, I won’t do that!”
    You eat when they starve, then complain that you’re fat, the ice that you skate, is getting pretty thin,
    Cutting down the forest while we grow our double chins,
    The world is on fire! But it’s not a war,
    So just add a new profile with their flags over yours...
    Hey now, you’re a dead star, switch your brain off, go home,
    Quit now, while you’re behind, stop your dreaming, don’t moan,
    If all that glitter is gold,
    What makes you a star?
    And not the mould?
    Tell me, why you’re the star, when all you’ve ever done is...
    Keep taking bout the change, but you keep it all the same, switch up the labels, paint the chains, it’s all fine!
    I can say all of this now, but I’m talking to the air on my own
    Who really cares what I have to say?
    I... Have... A...
    Nightmare that I’m trapped in, and all the ice caps are melting, don’t face with my problems instead keep on running
    Would it make sense just to live for fun?
    If my cake got burnt by a nuclear bomb?
    Put down your guns, let’s have some peace,
    Wanna chill with tubs of Ben and Jerrys?
    Do you have a fridge to keep it cold?
    Let’s try to keep global warming on the hold!
    Hey there, we’re all dead stars, guess that means we’re all part two?
    Cos we’re all made out of dead stars, their dust is what made me and you!
    Oh did you get that last pun? It makes a good point though:
    Because it means we’re all one,
    And if all that glitter is gold?
    Only dead stars, can break the mould...
