Distortion is a technique that takes serious practice to do correctly. People are pretty mean about it, but that doesn't change reality.

My favorite thing to do is ask someone to scream along with the song. Generally they will try like half a note and realize they don't have the lung capacity or the actual technique to pull it off.
I started off listening to classical crossover singers and teaching myself from them, and then when I got into rock and metal I have been at a loss for years how to emulate them. Like, how do you even cut off vibrato for high notes? Next time I'm in the car I'll practice what Malinda learned in this video :-) I'm a car singer... I have been onto the compression concept recently though.

A nice advice my voice teacher once gave me for classical singing:
When you yawn, you automatically drop your larynx and raise your palate.
So in yawning, you naturally have everything in the place you're going for when singing.
So that can be used as reference.

Ian Parrish fry screams are not vocal fry. they are very poorly named. they refer to screams using the arytenoid cartilages.

@@DapperHesher i agree that distortion isn't the same as vocal fry, but when people talk about vocal fry in singing they're 99% of the time referring to distortion so they get used interchangably a lot. im pretty sure malinda knows the difference between using the false cords and distorting, she was talking about the sound of the effect, which distortion does effectively sound like speaking vocal fry, just louder.

I've always heard classically trained singers have the hardest time singing outside of that world. Not saying they can't. Their just too clean and great at their craft. But wow... They need a heavy medalist like Anthony to do Phantom. In my opinion, the phantom needs to carry over the the more edgy feeling than a trained voice. Maybe Disturbed. Or did he already cover it??

As a choir kid of 9 years, yes. Im a rock/metal head and its hard to sing to alot of them because im so use to the structure and vocal discipline I've been thought for the 9 years.

@@QnA22 No I didn't miss Floor's version, but she did a more "standard" aproach to it (I mean closer to the musical version) - it didn't brought me the Energy and thrill that the "End of an Era" version did, not even close... Marco's raspy agressive tone and Tarja Turunen's powerfull lyrical soprano (with those haunting dark lower notes she has) combined perfectly well to the song's theme and the Nightwish instrumental arrangement on that was so Powerful too!!
If I want to listen to a more emotional version as you said, I'll go straight to the original recording with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford/Steve Harley... there I will listen to all the emotional feelings and all the original written notes and musical arrangements that neither Tarja or Floor ever did... But then it becomes a boring song again and I will go back again to "End of an Era" \m/ \m/ ... Anyways, thanks for the sugestion, All the best for you! Cheers!

Interested Bystander No, but just inte the first 45 seconds she already spreads slight wrongs. The larynx can be relaxed or compressed depending on the style. If you want certain distortion it should be compressed. If you want to sing ”normally” it should also be compressed, but just by a little bit
The softpalate should often not be raised. One has to master it, meaning to manage to bring it up and down on command and then find a balance.
If you just raise it, nasal airflow will be blocked all the time. This might be a quickfix for a stronger sound sure. But in the long term, you actually want nasality.
The nose in short explonation helps you to go higher in notes and is basically the central part of headvoice, falsetto and flageoulette
The next part is so oversimplified that its almost disturbing. She doesnt mention vocal fry or falsetto, which will confuse singers once found.
Im recommending nyc vocalcoaching not for its nationallity. Im swedish, but for its will to not spread missinformation, I do it for you guys. But if you like this singer then fine, stick with her she does aroundish 60% right in terms of standard technique.
Nyc vocalcoaching is online and free, you can pay for a course but its really not nessesary
@@fredriklarsson1707 Yeah, I agree that pretty much nobody should take advice from this video, as they're trying to fit techniques that take several weeks to a few months of practice to even do consistently (if even well) into a very limited amount of time. That being said, I think that the advice that she gives Ten Second Songs is valid enough for him in particular, for the passage that he chose. Also, I had no idea that there was an actual comprehensive free voice coaching resource online! I'm checking that out right away. Cheers from the U.S., my Swedish friend!

I only sing in my jeep. The sound of the V8 and the roar of the mud tires on the highway mix with my voice, hide the trash fire parts, and make me sound somewhat reasonably ok, in my own head.

If you want to get heavier into Freddie's tech, there's an interesting secret a lot of people don't know: he actually sometimes utilised overtones similar to Tuvan throat singing.

So, the classical/opera singer has troubles singing rock and metal but the metal singer transitions to classical/opera easily? Due to the strains the rock/metal singer normally endures it would seem to be about right. Great with the both of you, I loved it! Classical and opera are huge influences on rock and metal anyways, both vocally and musically so it makes perfect sense to me anyways.
It’s more like she wouldn’t wanna risk with her voice.. and if you watch the video, she’s very conscious of her singing with the healthy techniques just as many opera/classically trained singers does.
@@alvinloh9068 Except there's nothing necessarily unhealthy about rock vocals, a lot of classical singers just have an outdated idea of what the voice can and can't do healthily. A lot of harsh vocals singers have classical training under their belt, but they've learned to transcend it.
He's really good, but this is musical theatre, not opera. Musicals are closer to pop than classical.
They are so respectful toward one another and do such a good job teaching each other. Great video.

It’s always fun seeing skilled people collaborating, it’s even more fun when they’re from different professions. That’s when the magic happens.
A lot of Malinda's tips are what I learned in choir.
My choir director suggested moving your hands up when you're singing a descending scale and vice versa to keep from going flat or sharp.
She also would tell us to think of giant alien heads or cathedrals when we needed an open sound.

Our director told us to think about smiling to stop from singing flat.
He also told us when you inhale, to do it from your gut and not your chest (rib cage) as your control is from your diaphragm down there. And on a related note, because that's where the control is, never sing while your stomach is confined. If you're sitting, sit on the edge of the chair and drop your knees.
And of course hot pizza or not breaking a light bulb in our mouths to get a higher soft palette to have a rounder tone. 😅
Our teacher also had a sign for canto bella that was making a Viking hat (the horned ones) you see in operas. If he wanted robustness, he had a gesture, and if we weren’t quite there, out came the horns. It made us laugh in rehearsals and gave us confidence when performing or competing.
The raising and lowering hand thing never worked for me. Sometimes they’d have us actually get in tip toe or sort of squat too, but that didn’t help. Luckily I’m pretty on pitch most of the time. As an alto my enemies were projection and support. Once I learned to sing even on my back with a book on my stomach, it was easier. 😂

I USED to be a pretty good 'amateur' singer -- from singing in church, beginning at 7 years old, to school choir ... and beyond...
Until I had a very long (almost 7 hour) surgery, and the airway trachea tube damaged by voice... But even in just the last few days, my voice seems to finally coming back to me at least a little bit. Earlier tonight, I attended a school Choral Christmas Program, and was able to sing along with some of the music without feeling like I was rubbing sand-paper together. (smile)
So I was 'doing' all those things the 2 of you were talking about, as we went thru the video together. I knew exactly what you were talking about as you spoke of 'feeling' the sounds, and imagining the placement of the sounds, and 'spaces' and sound forward or back, etc...
I will come back and watch this several times... especially if my voice continues to 'heal'... I just LOVE to sing... just for myself, whether anyone else hears me or not. And I feel a real LOSS and frustration when I can NOT sing... I am also an Artist... and it is almost as if I have lost part of my sight and could no longer do artwork... Being able to talk, but not sing, is like being able to see how to get around, but not able to draw...
hi mr floyd, im also a singer myself, and i when you were talking about how bad it sucks for a singer to not be able to sing, i was cringing on the inside because i know exactly what that feels like and it was like pure freakin torture, imo. ive experienced a few different times in my life when i couldnt sing at all due to the fact that when/if i get a bad cold/bronchitis/the flu, etc... it often turns into a case of laryngitis that can last for several days...and then, even after my voice finally returns and i can speak again, that dosent necessarily mean im able to sing.... i mean not to my usual ability anyways. its taken me 3 or 4 months before to get my voice all the way back to the state it was in before i got sick. i cant even imagine having to go thru life without singing for any longer that that! it literally felt like i was missing a huge part of myself!

i just wanted to say, from one singer to another, im so sorry you had to live with that feeling on a long term basis...excuse my language, but that mustve been a pretty f*cked up experience! im happy to hear that your voice is finally starting to come back though. that is awesome. ill keep you in my prayers okay, maybe you could give us a little update on how your voice has been lately? RQK1996 actually I have heard of symphonic metal. Love it. Love Nightwish, Epica, Therion, Kamelot, etc. Now, this is different to me because a vocalist of operatic and metal styles came together to put their differences aside and learn how to sing like the other. That was the only thing I meant by their “worlds colliding.” I apologize you thought otherwise.
@@bjmatlock8877 fair enough, I only recently learned about that genre myself, and weirdly thanks to Dutch public television, Floor Jansen (lead singer of Nightwish) was in a show called "de Beste Zangers" (the Best Singers), and she excelled there, she did perform some opera there, before performing the Phantom of the Opera with the original Dutch male lead

If I was even remotely close to the DC area, I would totally pay you for singing lessons. I've been stuck in the limbo of "good enough to impress a bunch of drunks at karaoke" but not good enough to really go anywhere with it. I'm better at selling a performance than I am at actually singing well.
One tip to open up the sound for him a bit more is instead of holding his arms/hands in front of him, make a power pose with his hands on his hips, or the hands locked behind his back. Opens up the rib cage and makes the full body chamber far bigger.
Or as you do, flail them arms around, just don't hold them in front XD

I thought of my soft pallet as "yawning" when I first started singing opera. Now I can "feel" it a lot more. I'm not sure if I actually feel it or if I just have a good enough relationship with my pallet where I don't have to consciously make a yawn shape, but just send the message to raise my velum.
The best piece of advice I ever heard when it came to belting was a teacher who described belting as “yelling with style.” Once I understood that, belting almost became a snap! Because when we yell, we seem to do so easily. So start by yelling. When you get familiar with the muscle in that, incorporate style to it. I found out by this measure that I had a powerful belt! Omg! I had the equipment the whole time. I just didn’t read the manual

As someone whose relationship to music is only listening, this is is so complicated to understand but I enjoyed every moment of it.
Malinda clearly draws a little influence from Celine Dion when she's singing Total Eclipse, it shows in some tiny parts of her voice and I don't know WHY I love it so much but I do.
Interesting thought. Can you elaborate on how Malinda is reminiscent of Céline Dion here? I am reminded of Céline Dion's rendition of the Heart song "Alone," which perhaps shows the difficulty of covering an original by a powerful singer (Ann Wilson in that case, Bonnie Tyler in this one). We should probably try not to "hear" the original version and instead appreciate the new singer's reinterpretation.
Ooh, I've never heard Celine's version of that song! I'm going to. Listen to Malinda's intonation when she says "more than ever" and how she pronounces the 'on' in "holding on forever". The little breath before "right". I don't know, it's really tiny things that remind me of Celine, but I could just be projecting.
Perhaps you are extremely limited in your vocal perception and elements from the girl in the video remind you of Celine
She sang the song horribly. Failed to hit an easy note as well, especially being a damn opera singer. She's no Montserrat, neither Celine.

Incidentally, Céline Dion has some really beautiful French-language songs from the 1980s. My favorite is the ethereal and moving "C'est pour vivre." I also like the lighter, cheerier "Hymne à l'amitié."
