      For me, it's more of like a sixth sense. But it is definitely something you can practice and learn. The reason why I think it's like a sixth sense is because if you asked me why an A sounds like an A, I couldn't tell you why. The same way I can't tell a blind person what red looks like.

    When doing the open chords, once you know what the first one was, as long as you have decent relative pitch it'd be really hard to mess up guessing what the other chords were, since they'll all be in a similar key.

      The numbers are called integers. Each integer represents a whole quantity value. Therefore the symbol “2” is equal to something along with something else. So “2” cannot be anything more or less than something along with something else for it to be an integer. I hope this helps

    For some reason, this video gave me the urge to find a beautiful chord progression. I was stuck at (Em add9 - C maj7 (Rob's favorite) - A maj7 - B7 ) but the last chord wasn't good enough for me and I was frustrated. But then Andrew played the C add9 and it was perfect. So, (Em add9 - C maj7 - A maj7 - B7 -- Em add9 - C maj7 - A maj7 - C add9 ), I already have the melody, gotta find nice strumming patterns. Yay !

    Pretty easy, especially after knowing what the first chord was. The rest of it is basically using your relative pitch and knowledge of chord qualities. It may have been more difficult if there had been some random noises between the chords so that you would have forgotten the sound of the previous chord.
    Then again, all of the open chord shapes have their own distinct sound, so I don't think they would have been difficult to recognize any way. I recognized the A major by listening to the highest note in the chord. A major is the only open chord with the fifth as the highest note, so that gave it away for me.

    Guitarists who've played a lot will recognize open chords because of the order of the tones sounding - besides hearing a C is a C there is also the fact that the brain very quickly hears the intervals between the consecutive tones and recognizes 1-3-5-1-3 rather than for example the D 1-5-1-3 or E 1-5-1-3-5-1 or whatever open chord, which is all instantly linked to what we know to be a C or D or E. And further of course, we feel a G is a G. Also, a G has 6 tones, a D only 4. So a G 'takes longer' than a D.
    Because bar chords basically are the same chords, just moved around a little, they have the same tone order everywhere and are a lot harder to distinguish; that's where even more practice comes in. Or at least, I think all of the above is true but hey idk.

    Blows my mind how some people can really do that well..In college I once had a piano teacher that could immediately without fail identify and chord/note on the piano and know which octave you were playing in as well. She had been playing since she was 3 and when she started going to college she was surprised to learn that its not a very common ability to have. Wild stuff.

  • @MidlifeRenaissanceMan
    @MidlifeRenaissanceMan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its much easier to develop relative pitch. You can learn that. I am not great,, but I was able to pick what sort of chords such as add9 maj7 etc, where as the actual chord was a little harder.
    Once you have an anchor note, you can use relative pitch to figure the root note and then the chord built around that.
    Picking major, minor, 4ths 5ths etc is more useful than perfect pitch, which, can be a disadvantage as stuff can sound wrong if it is relatively in tune but sharp or flat of the original pitch

    Rob, I can not believe you have difficulty guessing the chord game with simple chords and 7. It's so simple. If the game slowed down and the chords increased, I understand, but I have only simple chords, 7 and sharp ... Rob, do you have a smooth, relative or absolute ear? because this fact directly affects the development of his musician. to distinguish notes and chords with ear gives you a great advantage in studying music and learning more relaxed or even more complicated music without the need to search annoying tabs and tutorials on the internet. Anyway, I liked the video, this chord recognition game is really cool, I've done it with my friends since I was 12 years old when I was learning (oh yes, I have an absolute tone) and I did not expect that you had not practiced this before, or simply had no facility for it. Thanks for the video ...

    I feel this'd be more universal (i.e. doable even for people without perfect pitch) if all you were guessing is the quality of the chord (e.g. aug/M/m/dim, the presence of a 6th or 7th, suspensions, omitted notes, maybe even the exact voicing) without necessarily knowing what the root is. I should try that with one of my musician friends someday.

    Got all of them, except for the Asus4. I knew the root was an A so I assumed it was some sort of A chord, but like Rob said, it does not resolve.
    Suspended chords are pretty cool, because I heard they can be used for transitions between two chords or can be used for modulation. I haven't used them much, so that (and augmented chords to an extent) are the few chords I have trouble picking up quickly. Definitely going to study them more closely...

    I got all of them right (even Asus4) but I definitely do not have perfect pitch, gives me a lot of (much needed) confidence in my self-worth as a musician. I think subconsciously I know Dmaj plays only four strings and ends on the third, Gmaj plays all six strings and ends on the octave, etc, and somehow my brain gets that into a "feeling". Same for whether there's a third or fifth or seventh. If Andrew/Rob had used a capo I would be fucked.

    Me and my roommate used to play that game... we had to identify the extensions of complex jazz chords but not the root note which i think is the better way to play

      For example he would play E7(#9, #5) and then I would have to call out: "okay so it's a dom chord, altered, triangle shape with the #9 and #5 on top!"

  • @vecernicek2

    Come on guys, If you have a decent relative pitch it's super easy after the first chord is played and can remember the last one played and compare the previous chord with the one being played it in your head. If you are musical at all, you probably know what a C chord sounds like after an A or a D chord has been played, right?
    What you should do so that this test makes any sense at all is either use a capo and alternate between capoed and un-capoed chords, or as a second possibility you could play chords without capo and have the other person write down what he thinks it is. Only after you played all chords, tell him the correct answers.

    The last one that Andrew played I knew because I have recently written a song that revolves around that Cmaj6/9, that was the only one other than the open majors I got.

      Clorox Bleach Actually you're looking for C#m11. Since you already have minor third, it can't be a suspended chord so fuck you and everything that you stand for :)(:

    I tried to play but the only names of chords I know are open chords, for barre and power chords I just memorize the shape and were it is on the fret board

  • @betalingsringen
    @betalingsringen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should do this again, but where you only have to guess the type of chord! You would just have to determine whether it's major, minor, major 7th or something

    So, these guys obviosly dont have perfect pitch. Then why bother naming the pitch, and not the chord type? They kinda focus on the least important thing.
