Thanks for posting these games! Really enjoyed listening to Vin and Joe - what a class pair!

Not that anyone here is saying that Vin Scully-the longtime Dodgers broadcaster-was biased in his calling of this national telecast, but listening to his call of Henderson’s hit in the bottom of the ninth is an example of his conveying the excitement of a play regardless of which team was making the play (3:26:04). This video is an enjoyable blast to the past. Thanks for posting.

This was the killer for the A's. They had momentum after McGwire's home run, with Dave Stewart against Tim Belcher. With Hershiser coming next, they HAD to win this one.

Yup, I think the As mentally gave up after this game with Orel going in Game 5

but Belcher was a really good pitcher too. he proved it in this game

If the A’s would’ve won this one, they Series goes 7 games

@@omarbaca3435 Yeah but the a's didn't win this one did they, so your comment is irrelevant and meainingless..... and stupid.

stewart was an arrogant hot head idiot. He intentionally hit Sax in Dodgers first at bat in game 1 and he got burned big time and it cost them the game. He was so arrogant and over confident he thought he could get away with intentionally putting the lead off batter on, but Mickey Hatcher burned him big time.

In 1988 & 1989 the World Series was played between 2 West Coast teams. It’s crazy to think this happened 2 seasons in a row.

ff to 2020 a west coast y east coast team playing in Texas .... who would've considered that EVER happening?

I love the theme music for NBC this series. It brings back so many memories. Then at the end of the Game 5 clincher when they played highlights using "One Moment in Time" by Whitney Houston. Tear-inducing moments indeed.

The A's had SO MANY CHANCES...and their biggest bats just couldn't come through.

    • @Rayburn58
      @Rayburn58 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The a's biggest bats couldn't come through because the Dodgers pitching was to good for them to handle. Dodger pitchers came through under pressure and the a's hitters didn't. Not to mention Lasorda clearly outfoxed larussa.

To be fair, Costas meant "weak" literally: not power hitters. Good, decent, professional contact hitters, but not sluggers. That's why he immediately cited the home run statistic. And remember that Mike Marshall and Kirk Gibson--the Dodgers' two power hitters--were injured, thus prompting what he said in the first place. Also, Vin Scully used the exact same word to describe the Dodger lineup at the top of the first inning, and he meant it the same way: the Dodgers had no true power hitters in their lineup. Costas did not mean "weak" as "poor", but of course that's how everyone took it.

Nonetheless it worked as excellent bulletin board material for Lasorda as he chanted at his team to “Kill Costas !!! Kill Costas!!!” lol 😂……

    Umpires (Game 4)
    HP Derryl Cousins (AL)
    1B Jerry Crawford (NL)
    2B Larry McCoy (AL)
3B Doug Harvey (NL) (Crew Chief)
    LF Durwood Merrill (AL)
    RF Bruce Froemming (NL)

Cousins' strike zone was really tight in this one, but I guess AL umps were known for being more hitter-friendly.

Just a shocker of a Series. A's should have easily won games 1, 3 and 4 and then finished it off in game 6. Bizarre World Series beyond belief.

The last road team to win a WS game at this point: Mets, Game 4 1986

Meanwhile, a road team would win the next 4 before the Twins once again 0-3 on the road and the Jays lost Game 1 in 1992 before Ed Sprague won Game 2 with a 9th Inning PH HR in Atlanta.

2:21 Bob Costas: "The A's lineup was stronger than the Dodgers to begin with. but without Gibson and Marshall, in fairness, pitching aside-and Dodger pitching is excellent-this Dodger lineup has to be one of the weakest to take the field for a World Series game. They have a total of 36 HRs-and that's with 9 hitters, remember this is a DH game-6 fewer HRs than Jose Canseco of the A's." [pregame]
    27:31 First pitch
31:49 Hatcher hit-and-run single to RF, Sax (who walked) moves over to 3B [T1]
33:16 Passed ball by Steinbach, Sax scores from 3B, Hatcher moves to 2B, Dodgers lead 1-0 [T1]
34:25 Davis grounds to Hubbard at 2B, who bobbles it and can't get a throw off, Hatcher moves to 3B [T1]
36:01 Davis steals 2B even though it was a quasi-pitchout. Terrible throw by Steinbach, nice dig by Weiss, but late. [T1]
36:32 Shelby lines back to Stewart, it deflects off his glove to Hubbard, who barely throws out Shelby at 1B, who twisted his ankle on the play. Hatcher scores, Davis moves over to 3B, Dodgers lead 2-0. [T1]
47:31 Polonia (who singled to LF) moves to 2B on a passed ball by Scioscia [B1]
49:21 Canseco grounds out to Sax, Polonia, who moved to 3B on a Hendu groundout, scores. Dodgers lead 2-1. [B1]
57:15 After singling to LF, Heep is caught stealing on a pitchout. Another bad throw by Steinbach, nice catch and tag by Weiss [T2]
1:10:31 Sax chops it up the middle, but nice dig and throw by Weiss to get him at 1B [T3]
1:11:35 Stubbs doubles to the wall in right-center [T3]
1:13:04 Davis lines it to Weiss at SS and he just whiffs on it. Stubbs scores from 2B, Dodgers lead 3-1. [T3]
1:29:49 Scioscia (who singled to RF) is caught stealing at 2B on an apparent missed hit-and-run with Danny Heep and injures his right ankle in the process. Scioscia is helped off the field by trainers and replaced by Rick Dempsey [T4]
1:45:52 With Hendu on 2B (singled to CF), Canseco on 1B (walked), and nobody out, Belcher gets a huge strikeout of Parker. "The Cobra goes back in the basket." [B4]
1:48:31 After McGwire flies out to CF, Belcher gets Lansford to check swing ground out to Stubbs at 1B. No harm, no foul. [B4]
1:54:45 Hatcher pops out in deep foul ground to Weiss, similar to Griffin's play in Game 3 [T5]
    1:56:32 Bo Jackson Nike ad [btwn T5 & B5]
1:57:46 Steinbach lines one off the LF wall, but Hatcher again plays it so well that Steinbach is held to a single. [B6]
2:13:20 With Hendu on 1B (singled to LF), Canseco fouls out to Stubbs, who makes a helluva play in front of the Dodger dugout [B6]
2:22:02 Lansford lines to RF, scoring Hendu from 2B and moving McGwire (who walked) to 2B. Dodgers still lead 3-2. [B6]
2:32:05 Sax hits a chopper up the middle, Griffin (who walked) moves to 3B [T7]
2:37:42 Sax runs on the pitch, so when Woodson (PH for Stubbs) grounds to Weiss, who shovels it to Hubbard at 2B, Sax beats the throw. Hubbard throws it to McGwire to get Woodson, but because Sax is safe, Griffin is allowed to score from 3B. Dodgers lead 4-2 [T7]
2:44:01 In a mirror play from the previous half-inning, Polonia grounds to Sax, who fumbles the throw to 2B trying to get Weiss (who singled). Griffin makes the catch and quickly relays to 1B to get Polonia. [B7]
2:46:24 Hendu doubles down LF line, Weiss scores from 2B, Dodgers lead 4-3 [B7]
2:53:25 With Hendu on 2B and Canseco on 1B (walked), Parker lines it to Griffin who, like Weiss earlier, just whiffs on the ball. Fortunately for LA, it stays in the infield. Bases loaded, two out, McGwire up to bat. [B7]
2:54:20 McGwire swings at the first pitch and pops out to Woodson. Inning over. [B7]
2:59:37 Shelby hits a grounder between 1B and 2B that Hubbard can't control, then takes 2B when Canseco lollygags to the ball. You can hear a smattering of boos. [T8]
3:12:14 With Ron Hassey on 1B (singled to CF) and 2 out, Weiss strikes out on 3 pitches. [B8]
3:19:16 After butcher boying his way onto 1B, Griffin gets caught stealing on a pitchout. He starts to 2B and doesn't make it back to 1B in time. [T9]
3:26:02 Hendu singles to LF with 1 out and Canseco coming up to bat [B9]
3:30:02 Howell strikes out Canseco for the 2nd out [B9]
3:31:54 Parker fouls out deep down the 3B line. Dodgers win 4-3 and lead series 3-1 [B9]
