In November 2022 a single Great Pyrenees named Casper protected a small flock of sheep in Decatur GA from a pack of 11 coyotes, killing 8 of the coyotes. Casper (2 yrs old) nearly died; his scalp and torso were flayed open, and lost his tail in the attack that lasted 30 minutes. He survived, but will never work again
I heard about that. That dog earned its purple heart and deserves to be babied the rest of its life.
I have been watching Casper's recovery and hope to see more news on him.

Thats why you need a few LSGD while protecting their packs. I have one Pyrenees and German shepherded. Still young 2 years of age about now for both of them.

Livestock guardian dogs make me teary eyed. They are so selfless. You just feed them and they are ready to risk their life to protect you and your herd.
There are a significant number of these wonderful dogs who are badly neglected by their owners and left to fend for themselves in the forest. It’s important that owners take full responsibility for and care of these dogs

If that dog hadnt been there, they would have been stalked by the wolves and picked off one by one. stop showing your ignorance. not eveerybody has a vet, on hand, 700 miles into the woods.

Must be because I wasn't "judging" their lifestyle, I was judging the fact that they don't even have the decency to put a spiked collar on their dogs like Turkish shepherds, and have the gall to call matting on their fur "armor" when it's just yet another sign of neglect.
They left their dog to die and just watched it all night?! I have an LGD. He doesn’t go into bad situations without backup from myself or the house dogs and he’s groomed every 8 weeks and gets appropriate vet care always. These animals are not taken care of the way they should be-under resourced and the dogs pay for it. Very unfortunate.

If you saw the dog was injured, why not go to an emergency vet? Those dogs aren't cheap. To let the dog lay there and die. I don't understand that.
They are probably miles from the nearest logging road, a 6+ hour drive on Alaska/BC backroads to reach a highway, then an hour or three down the highway to reach any vet. Whitehorse and Juneau are probably the only places with permanent vet clinics within 500 miles.
The normal plan is to drive a truck with an ATV in the back up from a base camp that is only a few hours away, use the ATV to get the dog to the road, then drive them either to the camp or straight to town. For an evening or overnight injury, that won't start until first light of the next day, because the risk of having the recovery team drive off the side of a mountain in the dark isn't worth it.
The group of people who accompany the flock probably have only the most basic of animal care training, no facilities for administering care, and very few veterinary supplies - because they are literally backpacking through a remote wilderness with supply drops when they cross a logging road every few days.
If the unsedated injured dog bites a person - or one of the other dogs defends the injured dog from the person trying to administer care, then you've made the situation worse and now need to medevac a person.
I was thinking they must be a days trip away from vet care. I wonder if she carries a fire arm? I mean.

The dog returned home injured after going after prey. So the flock was not manned by the dog for hours. Try comprehending the whole situation before you comment that the dog should die in front of the flock. As badly injured as he was. He was useless after the attack.
These dogs are such beautiful wonderful creatures. Totally protective of their flock and totally fearless towards predators.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why she wouldn't put at least a spike collar on the dogs. May not offer much against bears, but generally help against other canines.
Ya might know this ,but if ya cut the quills short before ya start pulling them from the dog, it lets the air out of them and the barbs that hold them into the meat deflate, making them more like a needle and easier to pull.
Pyrenees are gorgeous dog! They are hard working dogs also!
Now that dog had confidence and stood its ground against that grizzly which shook the bears confidence.
When there are wolves around you should always have a wolf collar on your dog. To protect them from the pack hurting and killing it. Bears around as well get a wolf collar for each and every dog you have that are protecting that herd. They are brave enough to take on even those they shouldn't alone. Wolf collar ups their ability to survive a attack. You need to make sure each one is confined for a period of time to get the rest needed to extend their life. Where they feel things are safe enough to get the rest needed. Invest in more dogs if needed. 1500 sheep is allot of sheep for 6 or 7 to cover.
I miss our Great Pyrenees. I always felt safe with her near by. She was my best friend.

I have two of them here at home with my free range chickens. We have Coyotes in our wood and the dogs do a really good job protecting them.
Tell me, if your dogs defended you against coyotes and got hurt as a result, would you let them lay there and die without any help? Well that's exactly what these shepards did, they let the dog lay there in horrible pain and DIE.

Glad I went to the comments before watching. Now that I know how much I would dislike the callous way these people treated their dog, I won’t watch it or read more. I don’t care if they live in the country. So do I. I race a sick animal to the emergency vet and if they have such a large livestock operation, why don’t they have a vet who comes to them? My friends and neighbors do.

They actually had a good group of folks look for the dog that night, but as many injured animals do he had hidden himself (possibly as protection from the remaining coyotes.) The kept searching and eventually he was found. And care for beautifully by a wonderful vet.@@annettestone1282

Yo there a video of some family living in the frontier with sheep and livestock guardian's. They said they use the great pyrenees for staying close to the sheep while the kangal chased away the wolves and the central Asian shepherd was like in the middle where they would stay close to the sheep but also give chase. All dog had spike collars. It's a great strategy in my opinion

I grew up in a 300 year old factory town of Lynn, Massachusetts. My mother a nurse, received Hercules Hercules, a great Pyrenees‘s g from a grateful hospice family,
We had no idea what that little 6 pound ball for fur. we didn’t have much of a yard, so he came a latchkey dog. Roaming all of Lynn as they want to do. Over the years wherever we walked him people knew him we heard stories about Hercules, taking care of cats he always had a cat with him everywhere he went different cats. he broke up a fight right in front of me between a German shepherd and a pitbull, communicating not fighting, and it stopped. Pitbulls were outlawed in Lynn for a time. It was scary.
Nothing scared Hercules not because he could or wanted to hurt but because he knew he was the dad.
during the early 90s, my brother, a sergeant on the Lynn police force received a call that a huge white dog went after a husband hurting his wife. We had to assume it was Hercules as the polar bear who is 130 pounds what animal had already gone when the officers arrived .
For me, it is no wonder is no wonder why his breed is the progenitor of all of our best
friends.

I am sad that a single PYRENEES was attacked by multiple Wolves ... that is heartbreaking. I have a 5 year old Great Pyrenees Female .... she is the runt of the litter @ 85 lb.s ........ I have Coyotes and smaller critters here in S. Carolina ...... I look out for ..... I hope your pack will stay together AS THERE IS NOTHING too fierce for a band of Pyrenees working together. Just 7 guard dogs for a herd of 1500 heads of sheeps? Talk about being way under resourced! Maybe you can get away with 7 guard dogs for 150 sheeps, but 1500? What did you expect would happen? I see mismanagement. Those poor dogs are totally out numbered! On top of that, why did you watch that injured dog died without trying to help him? This video makes no sense.

I think its somewhere around 1 dog to 200 sheep is the norm. These ones kept these sheep in the mountains for over 17 years and lost only 8 sheep to predators.
Think, people. Having 8x more sheep in a flock does not imply 8x more predators

@@lydianeilklassen just because of working out it doesn’t mean they can’t give then quick brush. Also, I’m surprised that they don’t were spiked collars like they do another part of the world, so that when the Wolves is coming to attack the throat, it’s harder for them to kill the dog..

I love great Pyrenees but as a dog groomer that lady really really needs to remove those HUGE mats I saw on that one..especially on his tail!!! Please...just one summer maybe shave them off..cause he will be or he is so uncomfortable and prevents them from walking and moving...maybe its the mats not his old age!! Also very painful skin infections will grow under the mats!!!! And they seem like such sweet dogs u wouldn't want to see them hurting!!
They eventually come off in the brush, naturally. These dogs don't take kindly to a grooming table and if you take to much off they lose protection from bites and from the elements. I've run Pyrenees and Pyrenees cross for 25 years now, they are amazing. Not recommended for in town living, for the sake of the dog.
@@jeanettegray7462 Tell that to my wife, she tries to make our GPyr mix a house dog. He sheds enough every day to make another dog. I think he's mixed with Border Collie, so he's black with a white paw. His mom was 110 lbs, he's only like 75.
Shaving them makes it worse as the outer coat takes years to grow back. They would be super high maintenance during that time - and they might not survive the winter without the water repellent outer coat.
If the dogs were trained to tolerate grooming, the dogs would stay in the shepherds camp long enough, and the shepherds have room in their backpacks for grooming supplied (two brushes, mat tool, bottle of detangler), then they could probably work on each dog a little every few days, but that is probably a losing battle.
If you are a groomer then you would know they should not be shaved. They are working dogs! Work them to death? No. Cut out mats? Yes. They are out in the WILDERNESS- there isnt a vet down the road. Become knowledgeable before making uneducated comments.
A groomer telling someone to shave a double coated dog that works outside in the winter.... YIKES!!!! Do you even know anything about working line dogs? Double coated dogs? You NEVER shave a double coated dog EVER!

Something is off.. the matting on their coats, one dog fighting off a pack of wolves by itself.. even working dogs should receive grooming once in a while.. she seemed indifferent about their coats. I don’t much about herding but I do know about Pyrs.. they need daily brushing but hopefully she can give them a bath and good brushing at least once a month
Working Pyrs don’t get a brushing very often…for sure.
Actual working Pyrs can be off on their own for a few months at a time, that's why they developed the personalities they have. They want to work with you, but they're not dogs that are going to do tricks. They're going to do their own thing, and they're quite predatory towards small animals that are not a part of their flock/herd. They'll kill and eat a squirrel or quail, or whatever else they can, and they roam. They don't stray very far, but they go off on their own and they won't heel unless they're domesticated as a housepet. Working Pyrs though are not housepets, not even farming pyrs are quite the same as a Pyr like you're seeing here. This is the arctic, not family run farm in Arkansas.

Yes, they are some special dogs the great Pyrenees also happen to have a puppy maremma can’t wait to get them together and see what the two breeds look exactly alike
I really should write this stuff down. There was a vid I saw where a wolf researcher, who has been studying wolf packs for decades. He found they didn't follow an Alpha pack mentality, but more like a family unit where they take care of each other. This video just proves it. Dogs are awesome.

I’m curious, before they all go out each season, do they give each dog some sort of flea & tick treatment as a preventative? Something like Advantage or Frontline… or even a “dust bath” of diatomaceous earth? I’d think it would be beneficial to the dogs’ overall stress levels, to be pest-free for a few months, especially out in the bush like that. God, just the amount of ticks and bugs that could get into that fur… lots of disease and parasite potential. But regardless, they likely do their work even better without fleas and ticks!

These dogs are meant for this job. Casper in Decatur, Georgia, USA, killed so many coyotes that he almost died in the process. 11 coyotes came after his sheep, he killed 8 of them. A 30 minute fight. He had a neck wound, a side wound and he lost his tail. If you have sheep, you need one of these dogs.

Poor Cuddles got more comfort & medical care from another dog than from Ms. shepherd. I would never allow any dog of mine to die a slow uncared for death on the cold ground. This woman seems to lack caring for her dogs!
I have a Chihuahua (actually, my wife's) that has very effectively protected my livestock from bears. Of course, I live on Long Island NY and my livestock consists of the Chihuahua and a very snippy Siamese cat. Never had a problem with bears since we got the dog. Or before, come to think about it.
These dogs need spike collars. The owners seems to be overestimating hers dogs' capabilites and and not helping them level the odds given the environment.

Forget just where, but this spring, a Great Pyrenees killed 6 coyotes one night protecting his flock of sheep.
Dont own guard dogs if you do not administer first aid.
These dogs have even been able to run off the wild boar in the deep south of North America!! Everybody knows the wild boar has been nothing but trouble for our southerners!! Horrible destruction all across the south. Well this breed is changing all that! I just saw a clip on it yesterday! Theyre incredibly bad ass!!

And yes I live on a ranch in the mountains and yes I have a working dog and house dogs. None would be treated like they are disposable. We all have each others backs.

There is a Great deal of difference between A Working Great Pyrenees. First of all a working Pyrenees is raised together with with whatever flock that is there prime directive to protect. Therefore they are not required to be be necessarily friendly towards humans. Most working Pyrenees are rather standoffish from humans.. It is not their PRIMARY CONCERN. This is opposed to those who are raised as pets Again one has to remember that the difference lies in who they are raised to protect. Humans or Flock.

Porcupines....yikes. We had a family dog that roamed my parents 100 acre spread when they retired, always came home at night to get fed and a warm place to sleep, 4 or 5 times with quills hanging out of his snout, your right about some never learning.

Very weird story, something fishy about it. Seven dogs and just one of them had to face a wolf pack? That alone has veracity problems. When there is a threat, a dog BARKS which is the call to arms for the other dogs. Secondly why don't you carry bear spray? And the notion that you just let your dog die and didn't know about it is revolting. Again, you would have known because the dogs alert the owner by BARKING. These dogs are the OPPOSITE of mute. Definite dislike on this video. BTW, you have no business trying to handle a herd that is so large that you don't know what your fellow sheepherders (dogs) are doing or where they are.
Pretty sure bear spray is not going to help when you're in the north wilderness of Canada. The dogs, absolutely. They've been doing just that for several thousand years. And, if you look them up, there are numerous French videos about them. The Greater Ontario Pyrenees website has a lot of detail on the work these dogs are doing as well. I know we humans like to pretend dogs can't survive without us, but these dogs are left guarding herds in higher mountain pastures here in the US as well as other parts of the world. My brother has met them mountain bike riding, said he just backed off and went around the herd, no issue. And the French govt has made a film in both French and English with instructions on how to safely pass a herd with guarding dogs.
I found it odd only one went into the fight myself. I know that a few I’d believe would stay with the heard but you would think at least a second and possibly even a third one would investigate. Every other video I’ve basically seen has always had multiple dogs answering the call of the threat.
What is it what yu do for a living? Where do you live? You are a government paperpusher living in a gated community?
Clearly you have not herded even a small flock up in the brush in rough terrain, where things can get spread out a bit and it is easy to lose line of sight. These dogs think independently, so they don't call off like the Border Collies do they will do what they think they have to do to protect flock and shepherd to the death. I have run Pyrenees, Border Collies, and sheep in similar conditions. The other dogs may have stayed to guard the flock(they do divide up labor that way, don't know how they work it out, the others may have also not been as close or not been as confident). Bear spray would have been useless.
Great Pyrenees are notorious for roaming the perimeter by themselves I consider than the number one gentle giant of all dog breeds but don’t mess with anything they care about. I’ve seen my Pyrenees clear a 3 1/2 foot fence. I can just imagine what 100 pounds flying at you with teeth would be lie.

she should carry a big rifle and several can of bear spray . i would prefer Kangal dogs over Pyrenees, it both are fantastic . Kangals are stronger and faster and arguably bark less ?

This is also one of the most environmentally sustainable forms of weed control, and brush control. The newly planted seedlings can thrive and they keep fire danger down.
I agree with using guardian breeds to protect farms but not putting their lives at risk because Humans decide to parade prey animals in grizzly and wolf habitat. How about forestry change their practice of clear cutting swaths of land and do selective logging where saplings have success without risking sheep or dogs' lives.
People in the comments talking about them just filming and letting cuddles need to chill. It's a reenactment. No way would they film the dog dying.
Also, you have to understand when living in a remote place like Alaska you don't have the convenience to get help immediately. It would probably take a day or two possibly more to get a hold of a local vet, let alone travel to them. The owner of Cuddles probably already could tell from the wounds, CAUSED BY TWO WOLVES, that there was nothing they could do to save Cuddles. Not to mention the thousands of dollars in vet bills probably if somehow cuddles were to survive long enough to see a vet, which most living in remote/isolated places probably can't afford (def not on a summer job being a shepherd to sheep). Just look at the case of Casper in Georgia who fought off the pack of 11 coyotes. In one of the interviews, the owner thought he might have to put Casper "down" from his wounds. It's a miracle that Casper survived days with his wounds and another miracle that the owner had Casper's expenses covered by a non-profit organization. It shows that owning a dog in a remote/isolated area isn't sunshine and rainbows and sometimes you have to make hard choices.

A great pyr killed a mountain biker in Colorado. These dogs are not nice. I have baby sat a breeders catch.
Why dont you pick up a book before you spread another lie. SHE was not killed. In fact she is now a millionaire because she CHOSE to ride her bike directly onto a sheep herders flock and thr guardians of that flock did their jobs and paid with their lives. THESE dogs are some of the most docile animals on Earth beyond their jobs and I am disgusted you would without any knowledge write this. I have been around Pyrenees my entire life. And they are as gentle as they come.

She knows their danger and tries to domesticate all her pyres and only sells those that cannot be in a family to farmers/ranchers. Some of her puppies were in the Disney film 'Santa Paws.'
My own standard poodles have played with some of these dogs, but certain ones were out-of-bounds. They were too mean to let in with their own siblings. Pyres are great ranching dogs.....I will leave it there.
