    note that some batteries have limitation on what amperage can be used on them.
    i bricked one of my old smartphone's battery because i charged it with my tablet's charger, which is 2A. it was just too high for the battery to handle, so in 2 days it swallowed and the phone started dying in only 30m-1h without any use.
    So if your phone is a bit older, it may not be a good idea to use more powerful charger.

    • @IcoKirov
      @IcoKirov 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Drop yeah, the phone i talk about was 2011 or something. the charger was 0.7A. so appropriate charging would have been 0.5-1.2/1.3 the most i think.
      the phone i currently use is moto G, the first one. i read it is not advisable to charge it with more than 1.5 (i think)
      newer phones has more advanced batteries, so it is not problem to charge them with even stronger chargers. but... still if you charge a normal phone with a 6-7A... i believe you will have a bad time :)

    I have a Sony charging station due to being a household with 2 Xperia Z3, one compact. The charging using the charging station is quicker and is cooler for the battery than charging via the USB connector. I have not fully tested this, but it's less than 90 mins in most counts. The battery not getting heated is also nice.

    Its all good on phones. However, you should of mentioned that in other devices, like a music console, the different in voltage and resistance can be the difference between frying the console... its always good to check the original power supply unit specifications if you trying to buy a different one to make sure it is the right voltage and the right resistance.

    Another thing I've seen happen with lower end chargers is they can be hazardous and possibly catch fire due to the charger not knowing when to stop pushing out a current

  • @daedra40

    Isn't it also important to note the effect a higher amperage charger might have on your device in the long run - for say, when it your charger has an amperage 3x the one that was on your im original charger. What effect, especially adversarial ones, can it have on the longevity of the device?

      Not sure what that has to do with the question. But I was wondering the same thing. Because I was taught to always make sure before using an adapter that the volts and amps match what the device is rated for. I was told that if the amps are too high above what a device is rated for that it could break the device.

    Why is my official iPad charger rated at 2.4A much slower than Samsung charger rated at 1.55A?

    • @MrKodanNche
      @MrKodanNche 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the charger that is slow, it's the size of the battery in the iPad that takes longer to be fully charged. iPads are tablets, have larger batteries, hence the longer charging time.

    • @miiiikku
      @miiiikku 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrKodanNche I am not comparing apples and oranges here, Apple charger charges all devices slower than less powerfull Samsung charger.

    • @lalajdhfbdj
      @lalajdhfbdj 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apple chargers do not have the required pins inside that allow android devices to charge at wall A/C rates. Your Samsung device will charge at 5v 0.5a if you use an apple charger.

  • @tqaweekly
    @tqaweekly 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a note, many mainboard manufactures have software in the UEFI BIOS or installable in Windows that can ramp up power delivery to mobile devices. Also, probably important to state that not all phones will accept higher power deliveries opting to protect the devices, as well.

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Almost all modern smartphones will accept them. As for USB, it depends on the generation. I said in the video that 2.0 will send 5V/0.5A. This is correct.

    • @tqaweekly
      @tqaweekly 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Science Studio correct only on mainboards that do not have device autodetection which allows for power being augmented. Example
      Manufactures include Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc. You are technically correct, however, you are not universally correct, and that is where clients coming to a computer store will complain most about. Nice show though.

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Smith Motherboards that have "device autodetection" would also need corresponding phones with processors that would allow more or less than the designated wattage to pass through. This is how Quick Charge works as well. However, for USB 2.0, the situations in which something *other* than 5V/0.5A are being passed through are relatively isolated to very old phones, none of which were showcased or even mentioned in this video.

    thanks for the informative video. Got a question from my own exp
    I have iPhone 5, for around 2 years now.
    It was quite okay, until around when reaching 8 months, on my journey to tokyo on bus, I bought a portable charge with 5A output.
    After using it for 1 day. I realize my battery is dropping like crazy ever since then. just 1 day after using that thing, my phone's battery is like having doppelganger. from 60% can drop to 1% in the next sec and died. in which some minutes later can be turned on and show 50% battery.
    I dont know what is what anymore... Ive been using my phone for 2 years in this stupid crippled condition.
    Is there some safety measure that I should have followed while charging?
    Feels like that portable charge broke my phone's battery

    When you do multiplication and use x as a variable make sure to use * as the multiplication symbol. It seems a bit confusing when you see x in two parts of the equation. Also great video keep it up!
    2 x 2 = x
    2 * 2 = x

      I don't think it was confusing, especially if you were listening to what I was saying as well.

      I agree with you. But many non scientific people do not know what * mean. And he is just trying to advertise the charger on his channel, so he has to keep it simple. This is not a science video. This is a promotional video.

    also i have a anker IQ quick charge 20,000mAh battery bank. its capable of 3.4Amps @ 5V allegedly, and it charges my iphone 6S plus in about 1 hour. charges my LG V10 in about same time as well, my iPhone 5S in ~ 35minutes) note i was using anker's own expensive "kevlar" cables (10$ each .-.) but totally worth it for fastest charges consistently that i seen so far. great powerbank,to have, it doesn't even struggle to charge my macbook from 0-20% in few short minutes. one thing its missing is ability to jump start car. and i dont trust the current ones that do.., i have actually nearly set one on fire trying to start my turbo 5 engine on my 2006 Volvo S40 around town beater car.. my friend that recommended it has a inline 4 non turbo engine so probably alot less CCA vs my heavy Turbo 5. ..i really hope they figure that out, would be so useful once winter hits again, cuz no matter wat battery i have that car, once it gets cold, something turns on within the ABS powerrail and just drains living fuck out of batteries.. wow im ADHD, and hungry

    I think the introduction of the phones and graphs is more confusing than the math. You describe the types of power sources, why not just describe the types of phone inputs and be done with it.

    so...is it safe to charge a 1A phone with a 2A charger for example? Will the charger detect and send the maximum amount of current the battery can handle or will it risk to damage the battery?

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. As long as the voltage is 5V (unless you're using a Quick Charge-capable device), you'll be fine using a 2A charger.

    Where'd you find out how much power your USB 2.0 on your mobo delivers?
    I have plenty of spare USB 3.0 slots on my mobo left, and a USB 3.1 and a Type-C

    • @thinghappened

      try reading the manual or ask the manufacturer directly.

    • @4RT1LL3RY
      @4RT1LL3RY 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless your mobo advertises some special feature, like laptops having a "charging" usb port, it should always be the same.
      The specifications for USB 2.0 are that a normal load is 5V 100mA and that a port needs to be able to support 5 loads per port, so 5V at 500mA.
      USB 3.0 has a normal load a 5v 150mA for normal loads and supports 6 loads per port so 5v at 900mA.

    • @Loc1600
      @Loc1600 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The standard of USB 2.0 on a computer is 0.5A,
      USB 3.0 is 0.9A,and USB 3.1 is 2.0A
