    I’ve been in Korma as a bus driver picking up children who suffers from Chernobyl and bringing them to Belgium. I have done this 3 times. Once I stayed a week with the locals. Belarusians are very warm and nice people. Where I was after a few days , the father of the house send their family away, because he had not food enough to feed me and my colleague. I try to give them money, but he won’t accept it. So I hide the money in the room where we slept. Afterwards they found it and send me a nice thank you letter. This video and helping the people there brings back good memories.

      Really?! Wow! So unusual that TH-cam suggested the video to you where I speak about Korma)
      I know that a lot of people from Italy and Belgium hosted children after Chernobyl disaster. But I’ve stayed in Germany)
      Happy to see you here 🥰 Best regards!

      I grew up in the countryside and whenever I return there I feel an innate sense of peace and wellbeing, something I don't really get where I live. I believe unrestricted access to nature is so important for us as organic, spiritual and social creatures. That seems to be disappearing. Bizarrely it feels much lonelier living with a hundred others, stacked in little boxes on top of one another, than it does being surrounded by empty fields. Then again, somebody who grew up in the city might feel the opposite.

    You may consider your birth-place "poor" in terms of money but, look around you!
    You're so *rich* in natural beauty, clean air and sunshine, away from pollution, city traffic jams, artificial noise (instead of the sound of birds, chooks and cows grazing), and above all, the unbearable stress that people living in small 'shoe-boxes' in cities suffer daily.
    You are blessed dear girl!

    Most people in NY would consider this a luxury vacation.
    One of the biggest fallacies of the west in recent times is the belief that money is the most important thing in determining quality of life.

    • @bloodscent5687
      @bloodscent5687 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It’s romantic to think living in an undeveloped country off the land will bring you a better quality of life but in reality it’s a pretty brutal unforgiving way to live. A lot of unnecessary death pain and suffering. Life expectancy birth related mortalities and so many other things that you take for granted in the city. If you think living in the city is rough you are not going to cut it out in the country. There is a money ceiling one you reach it your life doesn’t get much better and that is the reason people are unhappy they are prioritising a little bit more money but not getting a fair pay off. Money is not the only important thing but it’s the solution to most problems for people who haven’t hit that money ceiling yet.

    • @davidento9611
      @davidento9611 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      'Vacation' is the nessesery word here. Once this becomes the only life you have, most things you are taking for granted right now would be wiped out.
      My parents' families originated from similar environments, and although not perfect, modern city life is definitely easier.
      It's not even about money in most cases.

  • @pmarkiewicz
    @pmarkiewicz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +132

    Beautiful. This reminds me very much my childhood. I grew up in Poland, in quite similar environment. We used to have 1,5 hectare of our own cropland, with 2 cows, some 6 pigs and plenty of hens, ducks, rabbits and other live stock. We grew all vegitables alone. We cultivated the land alone, but we did not have any horse and my father was always borrowing the horses from his more wealthy neighbors. I have smelled similar flavor of such life again, while travelling in Belarus some 25 years ago. I am missing that so much, however I know how difficult the life on such a farm is. There is plenty of work every day, even on Sunday the animals need to fed and the cows need to be milked. Everything is far away, school, church, shop, friends. But we constituted a real family - working together, spending time together, sharing good and bad things together. Working on this small farm was a good school of life. Later our farm burned down and was never rebuilt. My parents went to work and our lives have changed.

    • @KatsiarynaTerehova
      @KatsiarynaTerehova  2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Sorry to hear about your farm 😞
      It is tough to live in the village. But when I look at how machinery can make everything easier than before, you may give it a try. As for the livestock it is a huge responsibility to look after all of them. Farmland has its blossoms, but before getting it you must go through dirt.

Belorussian people is wonderful, even the smallest kids are well educated, Belorussian women are beyond beautiful, I had never been outside of my home country so Belarus will be forever in my deepest memories. It is very nice that it is peaceful now, but I wonder if the ghosts of the past linger, either in the minds of the older population, as told to them by their parents and grandparents who were lucky to have survived it. Since I get a lot of comments on poverty and comparisons, I would like to clarify some of the notions:
    1. The aim of the video was to show the contrast with the regions within Belarus (for example, the city of Minsk is richer in these terms than our entire Gomel region and Korma district!). I did not compare the subsistence minimum of Belarus and other countries like Kenya and other countries of Africa, etc. The subsistence minimum is calculated in regards to the well-being of a Belarusian economy.
    2. Being poor and live in poverty are two connected but different notions. I am aware of worldwide hunger and poverty in certain regions. It pains me to say but we are lucky to have the possibility to cultivate land and get produce to survive. That is why we do what we do: agriculture - one of the main sectors of Belarusian economy.
    3. The wages (salary) given in the video are before taxes. It is a monthly salary! This amount is enough to pay for utilities and food. No more than that.

      You guys are self sustained, that's not poverty. I live in cosmopolitan rich city, earnings here is 10 times higher, but life is hard. We live bill to bill. Compare to ours, Life is much better in third world country than first world countries. Poverty is in USA, UK, and in EU. I saw Romanian and Iranian guys selling tea in Nepal, they are much happier there.

Never have I imagined that it would happen right at my doorstep, though I remember when we were studying the basics about Belarus: its history, geography, climate, economy, etc. There were lots of professors saying that one of the most unlucky aspects of our country is the strategic position in the centre of Europe inbetween 2 power states. They warned about it even when I was a pupil. It makes me so sad and angry that there is no count to wars, conflicts, hatred.

    A lot of beautiful imagery, even if it is a poor country. Much of the scenery made me feel nostalgic about the place I grew up in. My ancestors were in the Ukraine for some generations, and migrated, first to Canada and later to Mexico, where I was second generation born. A lot the architecture and the country scenery was very similar to what we had back home. My people are German and Dutch Mennonites, but I see that we adopted a lot of Russian and/or Ukrainian culture from the time we were there. Cuisine, language and architecture. This video was a pleasure to watch.

    This is so simple, yet tells your story so well, as though I am right there with you as you narrate it.
    I live in India, where a lot of people live in poorer conditions than in your country ... REALLY poor. And there are millions of them in this condition.
    I have found that some of the poorest people who earn their wages on a daily basis are also some of the happiest I have seen. They don't know what the next day will bring and so, they live for that day, for that moment.
    The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and people living in cities praise the clean and simple living in the countryside and people in the country are starry-eyed about all the "glitz" of the cities.
    The old Soviet countries are such a mystery to a lot of people around the world and such videos brings us a picture of how people live there.
    Thank you very much for bringing out such a simple, yet powerful video.
