How Mayer Sets His CE-2 For The Sob Rock Chorus Sound

  • In today's video I provide some tips and tone samples to help you guys get Mayer's CE-2 Chorus sound! Remember pedals naturally have some varying degree to their sound (parts tolerances, drift, etc) and in older pedals this will be more apparent! Use these settings to approximate the tone and then tweak ever so slightly if necessary using your ear! Hope this helps!

    I use a CE-3 and get it pretty good results. The beauty of chorus, when it's subtle, is how it just makes everything stand out just enough in a mix while staying relatively the same.

    Thanks for this analysis Justin. On a similar note, I did a deep dive into Paul Kossoff’s tone from the great Free years as clearly there was something other than just a Marshall going on. Turns out there was a broken Lesley in the studio and he used the non-rotating speaker to add some dimension to his tone. I bought a rotary pedal with a “stop” function, and there was the sound. You can hear this all over his recordings, and most clearly when he guested on All One for David Elliott. Same principle, I guess.

    Awesome timing. My CE-2 came yesterday, green label MIT. I got it for a good price but the seller didn’t mention a sheared screw for the button lid. Ended up doing more damage than hoped trying to remove it from the pedal body but got the in the end.

    Hello Justin, sorry to do here this question and also to do the "most tipical" question... But I'm undecided what purchase... I like the tone of Continuum, and also other artists like John Frusciante and more. What is the best Strato to start on this tone: Fender John Mayer signature or PRS "new 2021" SIlver Sky? I view on other videos that the Fender JM is not the true tone of John Mayer. Is a great guitar with special pickups but not the Mayer gear. Thanks, best regards

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! Sorry this took so long to get back to you! I think if you really enjoy other artists as well as JM being a main influence, a nice used CS Strat or something similar would be a great way to go if you want to cover a lot of ground. The price JM Sig Fenders are going you could almost snag a used Custom Shop and that would be the better way to go in my opinion! The Big Dippers in the JM Sig are nice but John has never really used them, so they aren't the closest pickups you can get. But you can't really go wrong with anything you are choosing from though!

      @@JustinJeske thanks Justin. Right now the main focus are the PRS SS, I’m waiting the stock on my local store to try and maybe buy one of them. New 2021 model. Also try a CS Fender. Thanks, best regards

  • @grosebud4554
    @grosebud4554 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Justin I know you just got a two rock but have you ever messed around with a Ceriatone JM which is a reverse engineered John Mayer Two rock. For a 15% of the price

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never personally messed around with one. I think they are great amps for the value, nothing else you can buy for that price really, demos from people I know with them sound great.
      But the JM based on everything I'm aware of isn't a 1:1 JM Sig nor thaaaat close to one. At least that's just what I've heard from people who own actual JM Sigs and others in the industry with first hand experience on the circuits. So I personally wouldn't say you are getting one for 15% of the price, something in the realm, but not identical. For people looking in that price range it is a great option though. Just my opinion so keep that in mind.

    Years ago I messed with the trim pot inside my CE-2 thinking that it would change the speed of the modulation. Now it gives a slight volume and mid boost when I turn it on. Watching your demo made me realize that it is not supposed to do that. Any one knows how to get it back to the stock setting?

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This isn’t going to be super easy. I know the Trim pot affects the bias for the BBD circuit delay of the chorus and they have that because of part tolerances. Basically you are not supposed to touch it without the proper equipment to measure it. The good news is you could have made it worse, either a ton of distortion or no chorus effect at all. I would take it to a local tech to see if they can fix it. You can attempt to readjust it by ear but that won’t be easy.
      There are a few threads online I’m sure that can help you out. Maybe message my friend Chris on Instagram @maninsuitcase and he may be able to provide more guidance.

      Eric Clapton uses the CE-1, it's been said he used rackmount effects during the 80's with the Soldanos but the chorus you hear on 24 nights (Running on faith) is a CE-1, witch the BOSS Ce2w does very well...!
