    I have a 1983 CE-3 and it’s been my modulation of choice ever, I use it a lot when I’m recording clean guitar parts and when I’m playing live! I love it so much because it’s stereo! I can use my 2 amp rig without splitting the signal by doing other methods. :D

    Hey Leon, Thanks for a terrific channel and, particularly, this video! As I'm currently looking for an older analog Boss Chorus pedal to reproduce the Johnny Marr early Smiths tone, this episode allowed me to confidently discern the key differences between the CE-2 and CE-3. I was initially leaning toward the CE-3 (as they are cheaper and more readily available), but your demonstration clearly indicated that the CE-2 is what I'm after (at least for this specific application). Your video has really helped to focus my search. :)
    Thank you for such a professional, thoughtful and thoroughly enjoyable channel, and for the hard work that no doubt is required to produce such high quality content. Terrific stuff. :)

    The first chorus I ever bought (which I still have) was an Ibanez SC10. I remember comparing it at the time to the Boss CE2 and just found I liked it better (I don't believe Boss had their Super Chorus then). One thing about the Ibanez pedal was it took a little of the bottom end away and brightened the signal a little (which was great as I had a darker amp at the time). But that old Boss CE1 sounds pretty good and wouldn't sound out of place at all playing half of "Men At Works" first two albums!

  • @slovokia

    I find the CE-3 sounds best with some reverb added. Also if my memory serves me the dry - wet signal on the B output sounds bass shy at narrow depths and low modulation rates. I wonder if the CE-2 and CE-3 use the same bucket brigade analog delay chip (I think it might be made by Reticon). I really like the chorus tones Men At Work got back in the eighties (don’t know what they used). Also cool sounding is the wide stereo chorus at the beginning of Happy House by Siouxsie and the Banshees. AFAIK the Roland Jazz Chorus amps use very similar circuitry to the Boss pedals - one speaker is dry while the other is wet. King Crimson made good use of those amps on Discipline and Beat.

    @Morpheus2292 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course you want to compare them so you remain mono. But let's face it. The big big benefit of the CE1 (the Chorus circuit of the original Roland JC-120 Amp.) is its stereo feature. The slight delay and hence de-pitch of the split Wet sound associated by the stereo to the straight Dry sound, is creating the "dimensional" aspect of this chorus; i.e. a sort of surround effect. This is why, after the CE-2, Boss organized the return to stereo as on your CE-3 and now the famous CE-2W (waza craft reedition with both CE-2 and CE-1 circuits in it.

  • @regortex3364

    I’ve owned almost every Boss chorus, still own the CH-1 (analog), CE-2 (x2), CE-3, CE-2B, CE-200 and Boss CE-300 rack. Also Boss GT-3, SE-70 etc. Etc.
    I sold my CE-1 because I never used it, does it sound great yes, does it look cool yes, does it sound better than the others, no.
    The overloading of the pre amp was why it never lived on my board, I only wish I kept it because of its collectibility, not its performance. The CE-300 Super Chorus might be the best of the bunch, but it’s subjective.

    • @gainonten4031
      @gainonten4031 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      what about the super chorus?

  • @markmills586
    @markmills586 ปีที่แล้ว

    The CE-3 is my favourite chorus pedal of all, and I have a *lot* of chorus pedals. In stereo (+/- mode) it sounds sparkly and glorious. In comparison, although I do like it a lot, I find the CE-2 to be just a bit too syrupy. If it’s the only guitar in the mix, that’s perfect ,but otherwise….. And the lack of stereo outputs is a real bummer.
    I built a couple of CE-2 clones with stereo outputs for some guitarists I know and I think they sounded more “alive”, if that makes sense. I also added a couple of switches: one that selects between two speed ranges (as I don’t think the CE-2 goes fast enough) and one that raises the modulation intensity for those times when you fancy feeling seasick.
    Apart from the BBD chipset, there’s very little difference between the CE-2 and CE-3 and I’m not convinced that the chipset makes any difference. Going from memory, it’s mainly a few capacitor value changes, with the CE-2 having larger values, so more low-end. I keep meaning to get hold of another CE-3 to experiment on, if just to confirm or disprove my theory.

  • @michaelk3550
    @michaelk3550 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I always preferred the CE-2, from what I've been told it's the same circuit that was used on the Roland Juno/JX-3P synths. It's so powerful that the one oscillator Juno 6/60/106 sounded thick enough to compete with other analog polysynths which had 2 or 3 oscillators per voice at the time.

      Check out the MIT CE-2 as well. They are the same chip set as the way more expensive (and it’s B.S.) MIJ black label.
      You can get them for way less-and they are the same pedal with the 3007 chip. CE-3 also sounds good here. Collectors that claim they don’t sound good are talking out there necks. Pedals will also vary slightly from each one, but a good sounding CE-2 or 3 is probably the most musical guitar friendly chorus ever. The Roland sound is undeniable
      ....Also if you get a CE 2 try powering with a Strymon Zuma or equivalent at 12v. Those Panasonic chips run better at 12v which also makes a difference. I have an 88 MIT running at 12 and it’s killer. The CE-1 was really made for keyboards, and is way more muddy with less mids. It can get real “phaser” like in its warble. It’s kind of a different beast all together. I have the UAD plug CE1 and I prefer my CE2 into my Strymon Iridium for that lush sweet sound. Cheers.

    For every Chorus pedal demo, Steven Wilson loses his enjoyment of life. [And I *cream* my pants].
    I just love chorus and I love your demos. Thanks for the explanations at the beginning

      Hahaha I always think of SW hating chorus whenever I play one. It's such a gorgeous effect.

    3 Great Chorus pedals. Nice comparison. Here are 4 others worth checking out. F.T.T. Tri-Avatar (on my pedalboard), Analogman Bi-Chorus, Jam Pedals Waterfall & Tortuga Martini = all Phenomenal. I also have a Boss DC-2W on my acoustic pedalboard.

    I've noticed with boss their chorus and delay pedals all have something special going for them...the ce-2 is lush as fuck, the ce-3 has an almost flanged chorus tone and the ce-1....well it's a fucking legend. Thanks for making this video, I love that you stuck with the same riffs for each pedal. It really is the only way to show them off.

    (IMHO) Had the CE-3. It’s not bad, but too sterile. CE-2 is better. Anything that the CE-3 does, the Arion SCH-1 has in spaces over it,

  • @cwir88
    @cwir88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thing is... CE-2 is both overrated and overpriced and it's mono. CE-1 is great classic, but it's even more expensive that CE-2, takes a lot of space and was designed for keyboards and needs pot changing to shine on guitar.
    And... CE-3 is cheap, I got mine for 20$ (black label), its true stereo and it kicks ass!

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      CE-1 sounds the best but the CE-3 is hard to beat for the price
