- Maybe Grandma knew all along what science hasn't proven yet. Get ready for me to spill some tea on hot tea on this week's Wednesday checkup! By the way, this warning is really applicable to all drinks and even soup!

most valid person
Thanks
Thank you.
Ah thank you kind stranger😂👊✌
Lol
As a British man, I gotta say... I reject your advice on how I should drink my tea.
Now let us fight, I'll bring the Scones!!
As a American man, I drink coffee but I agree I'm also going against medical advice
I'm Indian and here every parents say that hot tea is good for your throat
I will also against this advice
Same 😂 honestly never in my entire life anyone has told me drinking hot beverages is bad... I mean if it‘s burning your organs I would guess that I could feel it being too hot right? 😅
I have some cream
COME AT ME DOCTOR MIKE
It ok
Not drinking hot beverages must be a new grandma thing. I never heard anyone's grandma in my generation saying such a thing.
same, on the contrary they always said drink something warm when you're sick
Same, here warm tea is a medicine for everything
I anyways heard the opposite.
Same never heard of this
Same even with my mother because of it i develop that if the food is not hot i don't like it, i mean it depends with the food i prefer my ice cream cold lol
Interestingly, I was always scolded for waiting for my food and drinks to cool down enough. I'm overtly sensitive to high-temp stuff, like people drink my tea and tell me it's "cold", but for me it's "just barely cool enough to drink".
Exactly the same issue. I’ll sit for five minutes with food on my plate whereas my dad insists on having his plate on top of the veg pan (to get it really hot) and will eat things instantly. Interesting but I hate hot drinks - always have - he drinks near-boiling-point coffee all throughout the day.
Thank You. I was starting to think I was the only one
Me too dude. When I make myself some coffee, I need between 20 and 30 minutes to finish it simply because otherwise it's too hot. Meanwhile my brother, when he gets steaming hot coffee from a vending machine, starts sipping after 1 minute.
Oh my gosh me too!
finally somebody points this out oh my goodness, my entire family and i have been on debate for years and years on this 💀

Let's spread awareness for use of good units
This.
Thank you. I was pausing the video to go to a calculator every time degrees F were mentioned.
Bananaforscale: He IS using 'good units'. I understood him perfectly (while not agreeing with his conclusion) and did not have to use a calculator.
@@jstrahan2 I'm talking about Fehrenheit unit which is used only in the USA.
A doctor from the US, doing a video in the US, using the unit of measurement used by the US, IS using "good units". I don't get upset if I get a recipe using metric measurements. I know both forms of measurement, so not a big deal.
As a rule of thumb: Just don't drink/eat anything that hurts or is uncomfortable to do so.
If you keep trying to drink at the highest temperature, over time you would be drinking warmer and warmer as your throat adapts to the higher temperatures
Tell that to spicy food lover. I wonder everytime why they subject themselve to such pain.
@@fvefve12 Don't see how one can eat or drink marathons, but you do you.
That's why I always ask for a bit of cold water (maybe 2 fingers high) when ordering Black coffe - because they add no cold milk it tends to be hotter and so I can drink it earlier.

grandmothers: drinking hot tea is bad for you
literally every Asian parent and grandparents: drink hot tea its good for your health
Barbadian parents and grandparents too. At least mine. Tea fixes everything.
True! Exact opposite to Asian grandmas and parents. You don't feel good? Drink hot water
lol
In Egypt too Most Egyptians drink at least 4 cups of very hot tea a day some time more
This is very accurate 😂 My grandma is 100% Asian
My Grandma ‘NO DRINK TOO MUCH COLD STUFF’
‘MAKE YOUR TUMMY SICK’
Fortunately I always forget about my tea until it's lukewarm 😏.
PlumDutchess Lukewarm? Mine is always cold if I remember it at all😂

PlumDutchess Same, but it’s more likely to be cold 😂
Omg same. I always wait for it to cool down to drink with biscuits
As a researcher, thank you for taking the time to explain the difference between causal and correlation to everyone!!!
Shouldn't it be "the difference between causality and correlation"? Shouldn't we be comparing identical parts of speech?
Generally as a rule: I’ll sip it while it’s hot very briefly... and as soon as it’s cooled down to warm I’ll practically just down it all at once.

Yep

I've never heard it either! I was always taught to drink hot stuff if I'm sick....

Same here!!! I'm also from the south so my tea is usually iced as well.
I just don't like hot beverages. Not tea. Not coffee. Not hot chocolate.
Ice makes everything better.
Ice coffee is good!
Same I love used tea and coffee idk why but I have never really like hot drinks the only think I will drink not used is juice but the only thing that will drink warm is a "hot chocolate" but uk not hot 😅😅
As an Indian I've never heard of a granny ever telling the kids to not drink hot drinks. In fact they always made it extra hot 😂
Same here in the UK, think Mike's grandma may have been a little confused
Same in Eastern Europe, we mostly drink herbal here for medicinal purposes and all the grandmas are saying: "If it doesn't burn, it's not working".
Chinese culture as well. Always discourage cold drinks as they claims cold drinks isn’t good for body.
Chinese traditionally believe that drinking cold drinks isn’t good for you. You bet I’m scalding my tongue each time my grandma makes me tea.
I'm from Maghreb and people look at you weird if your not drinking your tea scolding hot (it does help lowering body temperature apparently which makes sense in very warm places)
Dr. Mike: “This is why hot liquids can be dangerous”

The China study had a similar issue. It found a higher incidence of esophageal cancer in people who drank more hot tea but only in those who also drank alcohol every day or smoked. It is plausible that drinking hot beverages might raise esophageal cancer risk if combined with smoking or alcohol consumption. But the study did not find that hot tea alone had that effect.
see now that is a study i could understand. because we eat hot food on a daily basis. because they can't actually attribute throat cancer to just drinking hot beverages, because of so many factors.
Most studies are later invalidated. The vast majority. A single study or even a basket of them really doesn't mean much especially when it's not repeatedly confirmed over time in other studies.
Thank you for clarity/truth. Makes for a far less clickable video I guess.
That would clear up a lot. If for instance you're drinking something hot enough to inflame or even injure your esophagus, it's increasing the surface area that gets exposed to carcinogens from other sources. But exposure to heat and cold is itself actually a cancer treatment.
Pretty much anything that could nearly kill an average person has a good shot at curing or at least controlling cancer, actually, whether it's getting a severe viral infection, being subjected to a battery of toxic chemicals (chemotherapy) or radiation (radiation therapy), or going between bathing in hot springs and freezing water, the adage "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is very true when it comes to dealing with cancer.
Perhaps smoking and drinking alcohol desensitized the esophagus and mouth, so they were drinking hotter beverages that ended up scarring their esophageal tissue
Now I'm sitting here frantically trying to figure out how hot every single beverage or bowl of soup I've ever had has been, and panicking because I think I'm going to die. I'm starting to think I might be a hypochondriac.
You definitely are an overthinker. The studies aren't conclusive, and don't even show causation, just correlation. There are too many variables to say anything conclusive.
Hey our instincts are never wrong😂
Everything is being studied except the things that matters! If it's comfortable to pass your tongue and throat then it's not too hot. Don't stress about these small stuff, just live.
Omg. I know. Lol. Mayb stop watching things like that. I had to cause I was like man what the heck is good to eat then. Also why is he talking about it if it isn’t conclusive or reliable. Like really doc ?? 😂

My worst experience with hot liquid: I was 14, I was in a rush. I asked the cafeteria lady for hot cocoa, it was boiling on the stove. Just as the bell rang she handed me the cup and I tried to gulp it in one. I burnt my lips and it felt like I’d pour lava down my throat, the air was sucked out of my lungs. I spat half on my hand and burnt it, all the skin in my mouth blistered and felt raw, I felt nausea. Never again. I’ver learned my lesson
I am super clumsy with hot liquid I once made ramen, sat down, picked up my chopsticks, hitting the flimsy plastic bowl and it fell all over me burning my right thigh I screamed and my parents came to help me I went in the shower with my shorts rolled up to rinse it for a long time, cleaned up the mess and developed boils that lasted weeks
This was the worst time this happened but it was not the first
I usually take a very small sip of a hot beverage to make sure it won't burn
Next to one sink we have a small faucet with filtered water, one tap is cold and one is hot, I usually use it instead of the kettle for my tea. Once I took the cup away from the hot water and some went on my right hand below my thumb. I got a burn that was red and sensitive for two days.
Once I dumped a half pot of just brewed coffee on my face at 4am while working at McDonald's. My forhead turned brown.

As someone who already waits at least 15 minutes for my tea to cool from boiling, I doubt this will be an issue.
Figured it would be common sense to not drink something while it's hot enough to scald.
i do the same thing!! i grew up in an Asian household and was taught to eat/drink when it was warm, not hot because eating/drinking shouldn't be painful, which made sense. So i was pretty baffled to learn people actually eat/drink while it's still scalding, i can't imagine how much it would hurt to do that!!
Same. I wait so long for my tea to cool down that it's almost cold when I go to drink it. I don't like drinking hot beverages. I have really sensitive teeth so anything that's really cold or really hot hurts my teeth.
Instead of waiting for 15 mins, I just add some cold water to the teapot.
I mean most teas should not be brewed with boiling water anyway, especially green. So I don't even think this is a universal or inherent problem
15 minutes? Smh.
I always leave my tea (but it's a mug of about 400-500 ml 😁) to cool for 10-15 minutes after brewing which brings it to the perfect temperature of drinking. And sip it sloooowly, truly enjoying it... Drinking hot beverages equals to shock to the system. It should be pleasurable, not scary, right? 😌

“There’s no benefits to drinking hot drinks above 140F” well, the benefit is that it’s delicious and it feels warm inside.

And it makes me happy 😊
140 is hot enough to make you feel that
140°F is too high and that comes from someone who spent years in teahouse. 100 to 120°F is drinking temperature.
My husband hates drinking hot beverages. I used to tease him all the time while gulping down my 160 degree brew thinking I was all great. Well, I sent him a link to your video proclaiming he is right! I hope eating my hat doesn't cause cancer...
Using a temp gauge now to drink my coffee at 135 degrees.
Great, now I need to go convert all the temperatures.
The original study (linked in the description) was actually in Celcius (obviously, since it's not American). No idea why he let the milliliters be, but converted the temperatures without stating the original... Weird lol
As soon as I hear the first Farenheit, I immediately opened a converter xD
Oh, man. Ready to be educated while drinking my 3rd cup of hot coffee

i wouldn't be worried about "hot beverages" going down your throat compared to the meat/cheese "recalls" going on every month
Lmfao!!

I would say general food recalls, only mentioning meat/cheese is disingenuous. Lots of time it is vegetables or fruits, which are contaminated with e.coli from fertilizer that are recalled. Do you have an agenda making it about meat and cheese? @@vikkyts
As a Chinese, drinking hot water with brown sugar and ginger ( 红糖姜茶 ) is literally the way for me to cope through period cramps and pain, and this recipe has been passed down through generations. I'm sure a lot of Chinese drinks this too
Yeah, and boomers are the wisest on the planet EVER.
not sure about period cramps but ginger tea is SOOO good for the sinuses
I’m so glad he emphasised the fact that it’s correlational and therefore not cause and effect so although linked, doesn’t necessarily mean hot drinks are the cause of cancer
I can't recall what website, but a teacher once showed us a website where they habe all kinds of information and due to the fact they have such a big sample size and stuff they actually found correlations that are technically good but when you just think about it a little bit they can not be true (lenght of hair & IQ for example. You don't become smarter when you cut your hair)
One thing that he didn't mention is that when your body has to replace cells there is always a chance of those new cells being cancerous (called a Replication Error).
So it does logically follow that if you are drinking liquids which are hot enough to damage/ kill your esophageal cells, the frequent replacement of those cells could raise a person's chances of developing cancer.
That being said, I also agree that he reported on it very well.
@@marithietbrink3352 Yes, this is why proper statistical testing corrects for the number of things tested. This is why GWAS studies use around 10^-8 as their significance threshold rather than 0.05. A popular method for doing the correction is Bonferroni Correction. The Wikipedia article "Multiple comparisons problem" and the other pages it links to are a good resource on the topic.

My only thought is that I've always wondered how people could drink tea and coffee WITHOUT letting it cool for a while first D: I always found it way too uncomfortable drinking it while it's still hot..
Whenever i get served tea i let it cool to room temperature because i dont like beverages above room temperature lol
I like it on the hotter side. If I leave it to cool for too long, it's just nasty and too cool for me. lol Then again, I can tolerate piping hot things better than some. xD Still can't eat super spicy food though. ;w;
I mean who would want to drink something that burns their tongue?
I do let my coffee/tea cool down to what I can tolerate but I absolutely need them to be piping hot when they're poured into the cup. I won't drink it anymore once they get down to warm. Don't taste good to me at all. Room temperature coffee and tea are just nasty. Same with iced coffee/tea in reverse. So only extremes for me when it comes to coffee and tea.
Bruh, same question. My lips or tongue get burned first before it can even reach my throat so i usually wait for it to cool off a bit
now i'm gonna drink my green tea with a thermometer in it

Man I can't drink anything at normal hot temp. I burn my tongue and then I can't taste my drink. Always do kids temp.
Ugh. People should have their things the way they want! If you like your drinks warm, and not hot, rock on. I was always looked at askance when I asked for only ketchup on my hot dogs because that's the way "kids" have them. I still take my hot dogs that way. =0P Don't listen to anyone who gives you guff over it. [edit for typing error]
I've always let my hot, steaming beverages cool down to what I called a "reasonable temperature for the living". After working at Starbucks (where I learned to steam milk to specific temps), I learned that perfect temp is actually 140 degrees Fahrenheit. For me at least. I definitely saw customers come in and request steaming to 180 and still say it wasn't hot enough.
Jeeze! Those people must have been masochists! What is the temperature for drinks made at children's temp? That's what I always get haha
@@leilac37 Kids temp is 140, standard default is 160 ish, 180 is the hot water tap and the highest temp the espresso machines can steam the milk (sometimes scalding it). 170 is what baristas steam it to when you ask for it to be a little hotter. You have to really push and threaten a good barista to steam milk hotter than that.(temps in degrees Fahrenheit).
I burn myself with hot coffee working at Starbucks probably 5 times a day because I’m so clumsy and maybe that’s why I naturally gravitate towards cold brew 😂
@@melyx6897 my god... I had no idea any of those were that hot. Thank you!
Most people asking for Xtra hot was because they were travelling a distance to bring to someone or they themselves wouldn't be drinking it right away , and wanting it to cool down not be cold when they finally drank it. ( Also worked at Starbucks for years).
Why weren't you my research professor?
Very interesting stats

No one ever said to me not to drink hot tea/coffee, this is first time hearing about it, my parents and my grandparents from both sides all loved it as well.
I just have a question: who’s drinking coffee or tea that’s burning hot? The rough texture on your tongue from sipping a hot drink should be enough to tell you you shouldn’t be drinking it so hot 🤦🏼♀️😂
My grandmother is drinking tea seconds after pouring boiling water in a cup, i dont understand why or how, its insane

Ur body (least in my case) gets so used to drinking warm drinks that you start drinking it hotter and hotter until you find ursefl no longer burning ur mouth on uber hot things

Thanks for the answers to several questions I've probably had for years, but never remembered them when I was actually around a doctor, so I appreciate that and your full and complete answers. It impresses me because unfortunately, modern medicine doesn't seem too aware of the reasons for conditions we get, nor how serious they are, nor why we acquired them. However, they're happy to give you pills to treat them.....I mean, how can one have any confidence in these people?

But anyways, I think there's a tiny bright side, which is that you might be more aware if you have signs of cancer. My dad has a similar problem genetics wise, so as soon as he started showing symptoms, he pretty much knew he needed to see a doctor. I think other people might not even notice their symptoms, or they might disregard them. I don't know, take care though.

Just a note 140°F/60°C is close to the pain limit. Almost no one in Europe/USA... drinks tea/coffee etc at that temperature.

GERD haver here. When I went in for my first endoscopy, I was warned that ANY damage to the esophagus can lead to keloid cells/scarring which are the precursor for esophageal cancer. It's such a strong indicator that the presence of the keloid cells in and of themselves can trigger cancer treatments as esophageal cells are already among the fastest growing cells in the body, so when they become cancerous, it's horrifically fast. As it was, because I'd never had an endoscopy while having GERD for almost 30 years at that point, the Dr was prepping me for the strong possibility that we'd be beginning cancer treatments immediately after getting the results...and informing me that the prognosis wasn't generally good with esophageal cancers.
Thankfully, after a week of coming to terms with my mortality, the results came back negative. No cancer or signs of keloid cells.
So, any beverage hot enough to scald the cells I would think could trigger the keloid cell growth/scarring and thus greatly increase the chances of esophageal cancer.
Also, to be clear, this isn't my opinion, it's from the team of Drs who've developed this treatment protocol at the VA.
By keloid are you referring to intestinal metaplasia...barrets esophagus
Wow! 😳
Thanks for sharing all of this information.
Oh, thanks for the warning. I already know I'm at risk for keloids (have a lovely lump on my left leg that will never go away; had an incident when I attempted to pierce my ears as a kid as well.) Thankfully I hate drinking super hot things anyway, and I usually wait about 20 minutes after I make tea before I start drinking it.
I also had GERD... It was so painful i dont want to remmeber it...Doctor told me to avoid tea, coffee, soft drink, alcohol and less spices(i am asian)... I follow doctor advice and i am better now...
@@Karim-ik5ij I've had two surgeries (the first slipped) for GERD! Barrett's esophagus is no joke!
My dad had thoat cancer and passed away from it 5 months ago. I've been trying to find reasons for it and have been trying to understand what throat cancer exactly is and how does it even start for a person who's never smoked or drank alcohol his entire life... This video I guess kind of gives me an answer maybe, I'm not sure - he definitely was a person who would drink (and eat as well) everything when it was literally boiling as he was too impatient to let it cool down a little. M sure there must have been more reasons but probably this could have been one of them. Conclusion: even if the study hasn't been proven yet... it doesn't hurt to let your beverage cool down a little. Take care people!
I hope you’re doing okay and healing. Also I agree. It likely would have been the cause or one of the causes.

I love how thorough you are in your videos.
Having been into specialty coffee for a couple years now, I've learned that good coffee tastes its best at or below that 140F (60C) mark. The heat can mask some of the flavors, which might be ideal for a super bitter or stale coffee, but not for something made with care.
I read you shouldn't scald coffee either, you should let the water cool a bit first
@@zeldagoblin That's right. Brewing temerature is less than boiling. For light roasts I go for about 90-92C and for darker roasts I'd go for about 85-90C. Darker roasts are easier to extract than light roasts.

Never ever heard of anything like this. Obviously, I wouldn't want to drink anything that burns or damages my mouth. Still, I've always had an understanding that hot drinks are better for your body than cold drinks..
Thats why I drink lukewarm water.
It just needs to be neither too hot or cold, like closer to body temperature I guess ?

Yeah it’s supposed to be pretty close to your body temperature honestly. Around 120 is where I stop for drinks :)
The Dragon ExBerk I thought I read somewhere that cold water can be good for you?
