Adam Savage Reviews Dune Crysknife Replica Prop!

  • Adam unboxes and reviews the officially licensed Dune Crysknife prop replica from United Cutlery, in preparation for his own replica prop and costumes inspired by the new film. A little bit Dune-obsessed at the moment, Adam scrutinizes and appreciates this polyresin replica, down to the translucency and sculptural detail of the handle. It really is a faithful replica of a beautiful design!

    Adam, nice review. I did the product development for the United replica. It was not cast from an actual prop. Unfortunately I was not able to get one - I rarely can with any film license other than Lord of The Rings. Legendary supplied a 3D scan and full rotation photos of the prop and color references to work with, so we started with a 3D print, then sculpted in the fine details to make the mold master. The colors came out slightly different that what is seen in the film due to the color grading, but overall I thought the replica came out great. We are doing Duncan's long sword next!

    So I know that someone figured out how to 3d print keratin fibers, specifically with the intention of flooding the rino horn market in an attempt to make it not worth poaching. No idea how successful that was, but if you could 3d print the knife in keratin (a long shot I know) that would feel very real to me, especially since my impression of the sand worms from the Dune trailers was very reminiscent of whale baleen.

    • @RadicalEdwardStudios
      @RadicalEdwardStudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I might suggest making it from bone. I eat cows all the time, and I like the "use the whole animal" idea, and I suspect a bone knife would be a good choice here, as well as efficiency, and it even has the benefit of matching ancient fabrication tech.

    • @RadicalEdwardStudios
      @RadicalEdwardStudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kobrapromotions That's true, but I somewhat suspect that actual keratin, made thick enough, would basically just ... not be particularly clear, either. At the same time, teeth are typically more like bone than keratin in most creatures, so one might argue for some level of functional accuracy in that department.

    In blade making/wielding terms that "tells you how it wants to be held" feeling is called indexing and I find it to be super important but not as common as it probably should be. It's pretty cool that they took the time to get that right on a movie prop.

  • @snower13
    @snower13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    It was interesting in the film you can see that in some of the tight shots the blades have very little inertia (light weight). If a worms tooth is strong as steel but ultra light weight, that would be a great knife.

    When you make your own crysknife I believe the blade could be made very well out of fiberglass. Use individual strands bundled & running lengthwise down it. That would give you the desired strength & opacity while also allowing it to be cast with all the details and colors you want it to have. For the metal grip on it I would use lost wax casting using a zinc or aluminum alloy. A zinc alloy would give you the ability to chemically age/ weather it without having to use paints & it will just keep looking even better the more it is touched until paint jobs.

    After reading a glimpse of the novel back then when i was just a kid, I too am much obsessed with Dune after the 2021 movie, want to watch the old movie but I just can't deal with it (it's older than my older sister). The new movie got me hooked and watch it again and again, also started reading Dune comicbooks too!
    Hope they bring all Dune stories to the big screen or maybe HBO series, because the lore is so intriguing

    Do a carved white polycarbonate blade! that should give you the hardness and translucency.

    Would be nice to see comparisons with props from the other two adaptations (1984 and 2000). And with any well-conceived artisan makes in the interim.

    I practice historical fencing and I recommend a nylon material to carve the knife out of as that is what is often used to make hard wearing replica weapons. There may be some flex or rigidity issues though and as for a clear composition of hard nylon I am not sure whether that would be available.

      I was thinking white LDPE might be an interesting option, but I don’t think it will be paintable, nor will it be translucent. But it should be pretty functional.

    • @endstreetprodutions
      @endstreetprodutions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now you mention it you definitely have something there. It may actually be milky enough to have some subsurface scattering if not a little translucent quality to it in smaller polished use cases it isn't dissimilar to the prop. I withdraw my hand I believe someone has the better cards.

      @shubinternet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, I did buy one. It came in yesterday. I’m a little disappointed by how translucent the tip is.
      It seems to me that either the nylon or LDPE a solutions would be a closer match to what we saw on screen, but then you’ve got the problem of how the hell do you paint materials like that?!?

    • @endstreetprodutions
      @endstreetprodutions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shubinternet I'm not sure what would wear we'll. Maybe a combination of aerosol paints that are then clear coat but even then I think the finish may be as brittle as there recreation. Maybe it depends on preference? Would you prefer breaking the replica or potentially chiping the paint job?

    How about laminating a blade with a central layer of Alox for the edge and Polycarbonate on each side, so you can easily grind and polish in the contours. This will alsokeep the weight down. The Alox could be sharpened with Diamond abrasive wheels much like carbide. The Polycarbonate would give toughness and support the more brittle Alox. I’m not sure what the best laminating adhesive would be, but our friends at the 3M adhesives hotline would always have the answer. I believe this would give you a blade with characteristics much like those attributed to the “real” Chysknife, but achievable in the shop without insane amounts of work. I’d run the Polycarbonate full length through the grip, so there isn’t a danger of snapping at the base of the blade. The faint joint line between the Alox and the Polycarbonate would give some visual interest and would be “Hamon” like.

    The production design of Dune is among the best I've seen in a film. Normally with a film the world feels very different from how I pictured it while reading, but this movie hit basically everything on the nose.
