Honestly I feel like that would go a long way towards selling the costume and making it not look like a flat replica. I get they're trying to be screen accurate but these suits *are* covered in water pipes and made to keep the user cool and hydrated in the deep desert. A sneaky hydration bladder and a creative water cooling pipe would elevate it from a cool replica into a true stillsuit.
If this ever gets finished up I would /LOVE/ to see a build of the 80's version as well. I really like this version but the 80's suits will always be my favorite.
I am not a cos player nor a costume maker. I write code for a living and for fun. What Adam us describing matches my take exactly in that it is infinitely easier to take something that exists and “edit” or “iterate” on it compared to starting from the proverbial blank sheet of paper. Many times practically nothing remains of the original but it still served its purpose.
Templates are important. Even as a CPA, when I am designing a test I have no idea how to start, but if I look at an example it gets my brain moving. It's SO hard to be creative from nothing in so many aspects of design.
While I can't speak for the actual costume maker, the weathering on the gloves may actually be spray paint. There are stone-texturing paints than are intended for use to paint plastic planters and things to make them look and feel more like concrete or stone. I used one of them for some PLA-printed statues from "Moon Knight," and the texture really does feel like sandstone.
It was a bit funny how she politely agreed when Adam said there are just too many details to keep in your head". I mean she did keep it all in her head when she made hers. She seems humble and nice. 🙂
12:25 To answer how that bladder is attached, go frame by frame on Duncan's hallway fight. Before the door closes, you get a really good look at the straps holding that piece in place.
One nerd said to the other "wanna come over and look at my cool new stuff?" And the friend was like "heck yeah!" - the story of how this video came about
Haha, me too. I'm juvenile. When they kept referencing and pointing while talking about the crotch and pelvic areas... they seemed uncomfortable, like they both wanted to laugh about it too.😂 Thats definitely a piece you want to move tho and not be fixed to ur chest piece.
Have fun with the suit. I think it will be fun for you to cosplay with it. It was great to meet you at Rose City Comic con in 2021. My friend loves the autographed picture of you in Captain America that I got her, and was very happy to know you wanted the pictures of her in her Tron Legacy dress. Thank you for your interest in it. I'm doing cosplay now. If I can find an email address for you Adam, I will send you pictures of my costumes.
13:15 -ish re overheating with a detailed back: Adam, could you work your chill suit lines to show on the outside to enhance the realism / fidelity to the movie suit?
Hi Adam, Beverley an folks I don’t know if anyone has already mentioned this but some of the behind the scenes photos show the rig underneath the suit and as Beverly mentioned the sort of belt and codpiece bits are just on the simple underneath suit. Which is how I guess they can still move around in them. Great vid 🎉 👍 👌 😊
I loved the stillsuits from David Lynch's version of Dune (even though the lack of any head protection from the sun is an issue), but I think these are more "realistic" and allow more freedom of movement if done right. Can't wait to see Adam's take on his suit.
I feel like an "accurate" stillsuit costume would basically be a cooling garment that had pouches in the thighs that (theoretically but probably not in reality) would pump from the thighs upward as you walked, IRL probably starting with ice in them. Like the tech in the books 100% just isn't possible, but modern cooling garments seem the closest to what they describe.
This is something I've wanted to try making. I guess the challenge is something that's screen-accurate rather than would 'work'. But I've always liked the potential of making a practical costume. The '84 versions looked like they'd get very hot, but because tubing, there's the possibility of integrating a cooling system. One thought I had is if you could use porous tubing and evaporation to help stay cool, but not sure how effective that would be. Plus the idea is to conserve water, so wandering around in a damp suit wouldn't seem right. Turning it into a cooled suit would instead need a place to hide the refrigeration unit, but that's always been one of the things that bothered me about the stillsuit ideas, ie the lack of heat exchangers on a dark costume that'd absorb both internal and external heat. Some day, I'm going to give it a try though :)
Or you could put the cooling system and a pump into the Fremkit backpack. That's exactly how Adam has done full body cooling systems in his cosplays before.
Read the books, and am a fan. How many decades ago was the still suit just an idea? Had my own ideas in my head, back then. These renderings, and the current (excellent) movie fulfill my dreams. It is possible, it is near reality. The movies want to make it more muscular. My imagination was more like a scuba suit, but flowing and loose on the outside. Like the Beduin wear their kit.
I think this cosplay is a unique opportunity to make something that's actually functional. It'd be so cool to see a Stillsuit that actually lets you carry water, filters the air, cools you off, etc.
A stillsuit doesn't just carry water it reclaims water from your body as you sweat and breathe. I don't think they filter the air though. Maybe to some extent? I don't know if Arakkis has any air purity issues. They're just low on surface water. I can't imagine what anyone eats there if it is as dry as the story says it is.
@@1pcfred yeah I know, what still suits actually do is impossible without a ton of additional equipment. I’m just saying “make it functional” not “functionally accurate”
@@TechnicalGamingChannel I'm not sure if we can make a Stillsuit. Though we can make a suit that does something I suppose. Frank Herbert was thin on details about how they worked.
Not sure how accurate it would be, but using the shoes as pumps for lower body and breathing in and out for upper body. Then use mesh linen to absorb sweat. Running downward through suit then filtration system to get clean water. Must be a way to cool suit also. Maybe hands and arm movements have moisture go through hidden mesh covered heat transfer device.
My guess would be some form of closed system 'evaporative cooling', essentially letting the sweat it would normally collect do it's job and start to evaporate, but trap the cool air in the suit as well as contain the evaporation so that it can then move to the filtration system in order to be recycled. Meaning likely no need for big heavy pats and all.
The costume adam purchased came as inidividual laser cut pieces, which needed to be assembled. Adam is talking as though he didn't assemble the kit. So who did?
How does the distill suit work in reality? Somebody figured that out? I mean looks good and all - but does it work? How long will you survive in the desert?
Adam if you want good images of the stillsuits. Get the art and soul of Dune. That has great concept images of the front and especially the back on pg. 219
Why would the cloth tunic be adhoc or poorly made? These are the same people that build the best stillsuits in the imperium, they know their trades. The offworld stillsuits are described multiple times as being far inferior to the ones made by fremen.
Now, just need a Kris knife made from the tooth of a Maker and a Maula pistol! LOL I know the movies went with a 3/4 mask, but the books talk about just a mask over the mouth and nose plugs. Not sure what that would look like, tbh. IMHO, those 3/4 masks look too much like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. = P
both in the official movie and these, the fabric look like rags... with all the stillsuits and fancy stuff, one would thing they would have better fabrics... in the movie you do see people wearing good fabric, but the rags they wear with the suits dont make much sense
@@paulbateman858 It's not worse unless you care about the details haha, it's just an amazing display to watch and I will always love it. I would never dream of these new suits, I wanted to build my own in the 80's.

Unfortunately, needed too much help with the suit. He is NOT the one prophesied.
I fully expect Adam to rebuild this and use the "water reclamation system" as a cool-water circulation system to make sure he's comfortable at cons.
That stuff is so expensive and a lot to hide I think
