Beloved Game, beloved track as well despite its difficulty. Playing that on the original resolution is a nightmare because you cant see very well the boundaries of your ship but it is so rewarding when you get a good time and position on it.
Recently got into Wipeout myself and attempted my first actual run through the championship mode a couple days ago. I actually had a good run going, coming in first in every race with a 10-point lead in the standings. Then I got to SIlverStream and I learned the meaning of pain. Constantly slamming into the walls no matter how careful I tried to be, falling so far behind that I was never able to finish higher than fifth. I finally had to just turn the game off out of frustration. I knew this track's reputation going in, but nothing could have prepared me for actually experiencing it. I've played every incarnation of Rainbow Road, and even the hardest one of those just doesn't compare to SilverStream. Whoever designed the track must have been really pissed off at somebody, because it really feels like a giant "F-U". Konodera and Arridos IV were definitely challenging, but SilverStream goes beyond challenging and into "We hate the player" territory, especially considering you have to take the harder paths in order to even have a chance to win, let alone actually do it.
This is a perfect description of the track! I got WipEout a few months ago off Ebay in the original 1995 "Long Box". Here in America, PS1 games came in weird but awesome looking elongated boxes a bit bigger than a VHS tape. It took me a good long while to beat that race just barely and I think I came in second... But it's an amazing experience for something that was around before I was born.
In the original Wipeout, I would only ever play Quirex, purely because I thought Kel Solarr was the coolest mf I'd ever seen. So Silverstream became my training grounds. Playing that course with Quirex changes a man.
I actually never had too much trouble with Silverstream's sharp corners. I got used to it after a few tries, the only part that consistently throws me off is the sideways boost that throws you into the wall. It's definitely one of the hardest tracks, but it doesn't compare to Citta Nuova in Pure 10 years later. That track is the devil's pitchforks, it's designed to toss your ship off the track and absolutely destroys your steering if you don't slow down. I think Silverstream's difficulty serves as a hard skill barrier to make sure you know what you're doing before you unlock the next speed class, but it's not the dark souls of race tracks IMO. Just one of the top 5.
And if you try to use auto-pilot in Citta to cheese the uneven chicanes on higher speed classes, it might even turn your ship upside down which has a bigger reset delay compared to flying off the track.
8:27-8:44 Wait a minute. You're encouraging me to try this challenge where I have to place 3rd or better in Silverstream in Wipeout? Nope. No way. Not today. I am not racing on this track. I don't have a copy of this game. I don't even have a Playstation 1. I never use emulators. I am not trying this challenge to complete a time trial and record proof of my lap record.
When i was playing this game in the 90 i convinced my older sister to try the game out, and as a dumb child, i put this track for her, she never played the game again. I still play wipeout to this day, if you like ps1 wipeouts go check ballistic ng, great game.
Trackmania Turbo has a few ridiculously hard tracks but most notably tracks #178 and #180 are absolutely brutal. Those are the hardest stages I've played in any racing game. They're kinda under the radar cause most people seem to give up around track #130. Wipeout and F-Zero had some hard tracks but TM Turbo tops them both for challenge.
I would enjoy Wipeout more if not for the fact I actually played XL first ...I couldn't agree more tho this is easily the hardest Wipeout track ...glad Im not alone
Finally beat Silver Stream in Venom! 2nd attempt (in the championship) I got 1st place. Been trying to get past it for a good couple days in my gaming time haha… now to try Rapier.
I love Wipeout and Silverstream is a great track, it just takes a lot of practice (and some luck!). There's a bug in the first tunnel where the game regularly flashes up "WRONG WAY" on the screen.
Hi Nick! I think I speak for (most) of us WipEout pilots when I say you're forgiven - I really relished the challenge of this track, and actually held the world record on Venom class for a while after this video was released! I'd also just quickly like to say thank you so much for helping to create some of my favourite games of all time. Cheers for the many, many memories and hours of past, present and future enjoyment :)
I remember first playing WipEout pulsE on the PSP and reaching Outpost 7, the toughest circuit in that game by far. A double hairpin corner, tight chicanes, rough bumps and a split where the harder path is necessary to take (Sounds familiar). I thought that was the hardest circuit of any game then I heard that the track takes heavy inspiration from an even harder track from the original WipEout. THIS track, Silverstream. PulsE is more forgiving with handling, so you can only imagine just how tough Silverstream is when an echo of it's design can overshadow every other track in difficulty in a different, easier game.
love all of wipeout so much, so much depth and fun in these games. Great video, yeah silverstream is something else but a perfect lap is still possible
Even with the advantage of using a NeGcon Silverstream is still a dickpunch of a track. Took me untold hours to get decent at it, and even then it still is a pain, especially if you're in a Qirex or Auricom ship.
silverstream isn't that hard; the worst parts are some jank collision and the handful of dash pads that push you into walls since a bunch are placed right before curves or transitions. Oh and the egregious slowdown in a couple areas lol :P ...jank collision was kind of a trademark of the first game anyway, at least the US-NTSC release spent a little more time in the oven and had a few issues fixed. The Saturn version was wildly overhauled, and is not mechanically or technically parallel with the PSX releases as far as difficulty or time-trials are concerned. Love me some OG wipeout 1 but it's been a long time since I've actively played, I'm sure my thumbs aren't as quick as they used to be. :/ here's a fun Karbonis jaunt i recorded (13 years ago?? good god what is life??): th-cam.com/video/UZQ9MjC5KdQ/w-d-xo.html I was still actively playing back then, and JABBERJAW was still hosting small north american tourneys at that point. I had the glory of beating Asayyeah on Terramax during one bracket lol
@@alfredsartwell5659 ayy nah he didn't but it was a fkn awesome time dude :P btw i hope you're doing good, sorry I've basically disconnected from so much stuff for the last like what, 10 years? life has been a rollercoaster, but the kind that's losing bolts and you're not sure if the wood isn't half rotten x.x
Liguria from Rally de Europe and Special from Side by Side Special 2000 much harder than this, and it's only for PS1, something from arcades like Daytona USA will destroy all of this, learning how to drift in it will take you more time than complete all Wipeout series
Ive never being fond of these type of games. I dont understand how or why people like them... Ever since f-zero on the snes. They are boring, repetitive and stressful... I never played wipeout before and somebody just got me a copy of wipeout on the ps4. I' m THIS CLOSE to tuning off the console and shelving the disc for good. As a 41 year old man I dont think I have the will nor energy to start "appreciating" these floaty hoverboard racing games...

wrangling the pitch of your ship, especially in corners, can make a big difference in maneuverability.

As a kid I could never beat Germany. :(
This is why later games have an autopilot pickup

Citta Nuova is a nightmare on Phantom class because of those twisting chicanes. It's so easy to screw up your turn and either scrape or hit the wall
And if you try to use auto-pilot in Citta to cheese the uneven chicanes on higher speed classes, it might even turn your ship upside down which has a bigger reset delay compared to flying off the track.

Greatly enjoyed this video!
Thanks Raian! Your support is always appreciated!

"Let's set the scene: its 1995 and youre playing wipeout"
Quite an achievement for me considering I was -8 years old
the past version of you must've been pretty cracked on PS1 games
Finally beat Silver Stream in Venom! 2nd attempt (in the championship) I got 1st place.

oh trust me. In the game Distance, the level Inferno and the other side is harder than this. (and some workshop maps)
I really hated that Ice track
I love Wipeout and Silverstream is a great track, it just takes a lot of practice (and some luck!). There's a bug in the first tunnel where the game regularly flashes up "WRONG WAY" on the screen.
Can only apologise. Silverstream was far too hard but I'd run out of time. European launch of PS was closing in fast ❤😂

Completely agree with this sentiment. Good video.

Nurburgring GP Circuit in Ultimate Racing 2D snubbed wtf
I'm truly sorry 1ntern, but I have beaten the UR2D allegations
I all was played this game in time trail mode

Citta di Aria (gran Turismo 4) would like to have a word with you.
Man and I thought Citta Nouva (or however it’s spelled) from Pure was hard
Today I beat this track its vas hard
In venom

Nah bs find the speed pads and hit them all. Ur just using fiesar. Use ag systems.
