When the fiberglass of the PCB get that hot, to turns in to carbon and becomes conductive. That's your short. take note that the resistance went up when you ground some of the carbon away. It is possible to lift the trace layer and clear the carbon, but you have to get it all.
That would be when the grinding pen will be a useful tool.
Isn't fiberglass made out of glass fiber? Glass fiber is made from silicates from Silicon. I can't find a recipe for glass fiber that contains carbon. Maybe it's from the resin.

If it is a layer issue, it's possible it didn't get any heat spots because there was no component in the way of the flow of current to get hot, it was just flowing from power to ground through the shorted board layer. Knowledge says the board layers could be carved out and a fix might be possible, Wisdom/Experience says, the board is a no fix. Nicely done!
Yeah, drilling the board wouldn't have been a good idea I agree. I'd leave it up to the customer to find someone crazy enough to do it too.
1. There was no current flow so I don't know what you are writing here
2. You don't need components in the path of current to generate heat. Wires, traces, board layers, whatever metal is enough. Don't think you understand this topic well mate.
@@Martin_danko9207 you're right. I don't know the topic that well, if I did, i'd be fixing boards instead of watching a channel teaching me how to fix boards.
If you hook up positive to ground on your power supply does it detect dead short and limit amperage or does it push all of its amperage to ground?
I'm not sure and I'm not willing to risk my power supply to find out.
I thought Alex said it was injecting 0.7 amps, but I watched again and he said 0.07, so my bad, I was thinking at 0.7 amps it would take a long time to heat the entire ground plane without a component 'in the way' causing the short.

How do you determine what ceramic capacitor to use as a replacement? Don't they have ratings that I should be concerned about?
Totally aggree with your decision to stop working on the laptop.
At the same time its obvious why only 0.077 Amps are being drawn if you use Ohms Law: I = U/R -> I = 1,4V/16Ω = 0.088A
I dont know how much voltage you injected, but the physics checks out I guess

These ROG Strix Laptops are a plague. We should go forward with a class action lawsuit, unbelievable...
Absolutely, it's not only the strix lineup. Both the zephyrus & tuf laptop lineups have very high failure rates. Even my Asus ROG Strix laptop died twice right after the warranty period. Asus definitely has some planned obsolescence going on here. They need to have a class action lawsuit filed against them. I was gathering data & evidence but couldn't complete it due to personal restrictions.

I don't think it's planned obsolescence, they just save on costs, it's always the same problems: ripped battery connector or dead mosfet... I experienced both with mine, back to Lenovo now...

clean better the burnt area with dremel, you still have a connection to ground , the burnt pcb between layers causes low ohm readings ...
The ginormous amount of jobs he has on his dock connotes him not prioritising his time efficiently. So as he said that type of grinding/rebuilding repair will have to happen elsewhere.

Big Companies that produce that kind of electronics devices is not interesting in to let you repair broken units. Thats why they make it very delicate and hard to get broken so they can sell more units. They actually loose money when good people like you is trying to repair.

Just draw with thin scalpel between the top traces where it seemed to have been blackened, it will take like 5 seconds to do and I think that would have fixed it.
I wonder how thin the layers would be at that spot and if it's a delicate area. He sounds like he's been there, done that. But yes! I wanted to start scratching like a dog with fleas. Cheers

Hey man, I have a couple questions that I'm totally stuck on. First off, let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of your channel!! I've been interested in repairing laptop and desktop motherboard boards for roughly 2 years now and I absolutely would not have been able to learn half of what I know if it wasn't for you and your channel. So, thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with me!!
Sooo, I have an Asus ROG Zephyrus gu502gv motherboard that had a loose screw in it somehow and it ended up touching the motherboard causing it to make a "zapping" kind of sound and immediately just shut off and died with absolutely no indication of life whatsoever. No LED lights come on when plugged in. Anyways, I believe that I have found the issue with a blown cap. Now, my issue is that I have absolutely no idea about these caps. I don't know where to even find the exact cap to replace it. Could you maybe give me a little bit of advice on how the caps work and where to find them and if there are certain specific sizes that I would need, please?
Also, I am receiving another Asus Zephyrus ROG gu502 gaming laptop that was given to me by a very random and kind person because they thought it would be a good project and a valuable learning experience on how to repair it. Now, when they gave this laptop to me they said it was totally dead and unresponsive with no signs of life and no LED indications. They told me that her son had spilled soda on the laptop while it was powered on and while he was using it. I'm not sure how bad the spill was. I haven't seen it yet. But, what caps or compositors usually go bad due to liquid damage? She said that the spill had happened on the left side of the laptop and motherboard. Is it even possible for it to be repaired depending on how much of the soda was spilled on it? Or is it just a dead, unrepairable board??
He's not going to read a book kiddo. Make it 4 sentences. The caps are only for rfi or noise protection. You do what he does. Pull a cap from another board. Also you need to study about basic circuits and components so when you see it on a board you recognize the function.

Plus, when being on a laptop or computer, it doesnt really seem like im typing a whole lot. Anyways, I didn't know where else or who else to turn to for help and advice.

Switching from thru-hole, soldering 0805 MLCCs onto boards gives me the fear. I've broken a few just by looking at them.

I wonder is the reason the motherboard doesn't draw amps now because you didn't replace the capacitors you had to take off to clean the carbon.
