    The actor who played Sima Yi in 2010 series is one of my favorite actors. The recent 2 part series Avisors Alliance and sequel with different name, was excellent. Sima Yi is one of the most important heroes in the 3 Kingdom story and a favorite of mine. He brings the big story to a good ending.

    Finished your series in one day. Definitely the best ROTK explainer series out there in youtube. I love that you focused more on the characters themselves and not just on the actual facts of who won this and that battle. This is actually what I was looking for, to understand who the characters are in the game that I love, Total War: Three Kingdoms. I also like that you use some meme style of storytelling, definitely fit for the modern age lol and thank you for the subtitles, for a non-native english speaker like me, the subtitles are a great help. I have one criticism though. Your audio has some break ups. Maybe get a better mic or better audio system. I hope you also cover the 3 kingdoms period of Korea (Baekje, Silla, and Goguryeo), which seems interesting as well. Subbed and more power to your channel. Also, Cao Cao did nothing wrong.

      Wow one day!? That's like 4 hours hahaha. Thanks allot man, I'm glad you were able to get something out of the experience.
      Yeah man, what I didn't like about other videos I find on the subject was exactly that - "X kingdom beat Y Kingdom, Y Kingdom beat Z Kingdom;" and so on and so forth. I'm a huge fan of Dan Carlins history podcasts and I try to inject that energy into the videos.
      Yeah after months I could never figure out the audio - it's all good now though aha but it does hurt the quality a bit.
      Thanks again.

    I actually believe that Sima Yi knew there was no ambush at Xieting. He knew that if he killed Zhuge Liang, the Caos would have no more use for him and would see him as the biggest threat. He knew that he had to win, but not utterly destroy Shu or Zhuge Liang so that he could keep his military command and his life.

      An excerpt from the show is this th-cam.com/video/zdYAwC7FXI8/w-d-xo.html
      Im not the best chinese speaker myself, and I have watched an Eng sub version of the series, but essentially this scene is a unique take regarding the famous "empty fort strategy" by Zhuge Liang.
      The traditional story (as in the 2010 3 kingdoms) is this: Zhuge Liang is caught off guard in a fort with no garrison and bluffs his way through by playing the guzhen on the city walls and opening the gates, inviting sima yi for an attack. Sima Yi suspects an ambush and retreats.
      In this version here, Sima Yi sees through Zhuge Liangs ploy instead, and knows that the fort is unguarded. And Sima Yi regards that Zhuge Liang is aware that such a ploy will not be able to fool him(Sima Yi), and therefore there is no legitimate "bluff" here. Rather, Sima Yi recognizes that Zhuge Liang's true scheme is not in this simple bluff, but is in fact the underlying dilemma such a scenario presents, and Sima Yi realises that Zhuge Liang is essentially gambling that Sima Yi will retreat not because that he has been duped by the ploy, but instead that he will use the atypical appearance signifying a possible ambush as an excuse to retreat so that he can maintain his political power.
      Indeed both Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang know that once Sima Yi attacks and defeats/kills Zhuge Liang, he will be disposed off by the Wei Court, as he is the only general capable of dealing with Zhuge Liang and once the external threat is gone the court will scheme to plot his downfall, especially the Cao kinsmen who fear Sima Yi's growing power and ambition.

    • @carrotcarrot27
      @carrotcarrot27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The whole scene is basically Sima Yi wrestling with his motivations and morals in his own head, portrayed as a convo with Zhuge Liang(who he deeply idolises and views as his greatest rival). It is a struggle between sparing Zhuge Liang to preserve his political power (self-preservation), and rendering a great deed to his country by killing Zhuge Liang but the process ensuring his own downfall (loyalty to the Wei court). After a long debate, he reasons that "if Zhuge Liang can sacrifice for his country, I similarly can do the same as well"(emulating his idol in a sense) and his(Sima Yi's own) death will be worth as defeating such a great rival will immortalise his name forever. After all, what one clamours to do most in life is achieve great glory, fulfill his duties, and leave behind his name in the annals of history. He is thus tempted to call Zhuge Liangs gambit.
      However, he is reminded by "Zhuge Liang"(himself), that once he falls victim to the machinations of the court, although he will achieve everlasting glory for defeating Zhuge Liang, his children will not be safe without his political presence. Sima Yi eventually realises his true aspiration in life is much more than "everlasting glory" or consigning himself to servitude to the Wei court, and chooses to retreat to patiently bide his time to achieve his grander aspirations (which is left ambiguous, whether it be preservation of his family or the call of imperial dynasty. Perhaps the 2 are inseparable). While he may be punished for his failure to kill Zhuge Liang, the punishment pales in comparison to his potential complete downfall(likely from trumped up charges of treason) should he had succeeded.
      This entire scene not only encapsulates cruel court politics, but also Sima Yi's inner struggle with his conflicting ambitions, and defining the moment which he (who has always regarded himself as a loyal servant of Wei, to repay the previous emperor's Cao Pi's magnanimity) realises that his loyalty to Wei has instead already warped into the pursuit of personal preservation and self-aggrandizement.

    Good job reviewing Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Sima family might have won in the end, but if you follow Chinese history after the book, the Jin Dynasty fell within 30 years of its founding. The Sima clan conspired against their own family: brother against brother, uncle against nephew, wife against husband until the very foundation of their empire fell apart.
    Treachery may win you an empire easily, but the same threat of treachery can just as easily lose you that empire.

    • @daveeygdoeschinese
      @daveeygdoeschinese  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your comment man. Yeah true! I feel like this is the key lesson of the book. It's as if the book is a dialogue between the virtues of Confucian idealism verse the harsh realities of Legalism. In the end the Sima clan could not sustain an empire won by treachery.

    About the empty fort strategy employed by Zhuge Liang, I feel that Sima Yi actually knew it was a ruse. If Sima Yi were to order an attack into the fort, that would no doubt spell the end of Zhuge Liang, but despite knowing its a ruse, Sima Yi ordered a retreat anyways because if Zhuge Liang were to perish there, Shu would no longer pose a threat and thus, there also wouldn’t be a need for Sima Yi to counter Zhuge Liang’s strategies. At best Sima Yi would be forced to retire again or at worst, have his whole family be executed. I think Zhuge Liang also knew of this as well so his empty fort strategy wasn’t so much to scare the Wei’s army, but instead banking on Sima Yi not wanting to end up in a lose-lose situation. So really it might be a much more calculated move for both sides than one might expect, at least that’s my headcannon anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Thanks allot man that really means allot to me. In this era it's certainly harder to have a conversation about complex issues. I think allot people have been led astray by the woke stuff to the point they can't see past racial issues. In that video you mentioned I was basically just like "everyone please don't ape out and kill each other." That was taken as "your blaming me, but actually it's their fault."
      I really hope these videos as meagre as they are can enrich peoples souls and minds and perhaps help a little bit in stopping an all out race war erupting between the Chinese and the west in a few years when shit eventually hits the fan.

    Well done! Got through the whole things and now have a base of understanding for Chinese history.
    One thing that confused the crap out or me though was that you swapped the color coding for the battle maps. It was irritating and confusing, wasn't till like part 6 where I realized they were swapped. Blue green and red needs to stay consistent from the map view to the tactical view.
    Other than that, I loved it.

      Im glad you enjoyed the series! Thanks for the comment. Yeah i didnt realize that until you mentioned it. Do you mean the colour for the circles represnting the units not matching the colour represnting their kingdom? Yeah i didnt consider how that would be confusing, thanks for pointing that out, ill make sure to make it more clear in the future. I used the symbol for their respective kingdoms (魏 wei, 蜀shu, 误wu) to represent what kingdom they are from but thats not really helpful if you dont read chinese, i didnt think about that 😅
      Stay tuned for the next video, ive been working on it for 2 months.

    Btw, this isn't the actual final chapter of the saga. Zhuge Liang died in (234AD) - the conflict goes on for another 50 years with several volumes written, but this part is not as popular.they describe the final campaigns against Shu and Wu, but man, hardly anyone knows of them any more.
    After the fall of Shu in 263AD, Wei fell in 266AD, getting usurped by the Sima, forming the Jin Dynasty, and then launched their campaign against Wu, which fell in 280AD.
