On the subject of ROI. I bought a 3250.00 fish finder setup. There is no justification for that except I am 60 I have the funds and that's what I wanted. My wife asked how are you going to catch enough fish to justify that. I told her I won't but they will taste better. She is still with me that's true love.
With that set up you could find spying subs. To help your country to. Tell her it's better to find lost ship wrecks hunt for lost treasure 😆 There is nothing like a good fish finder wish I could afford one like that I hope your enjoying it.
It’s already brought you $3,250.00 in enjoyment. You wanted it, and you’re happy. That’s what’s important. It makes you happy. Sometimes you can’t put a price tag on happiness....especially these days when there is too much to be unhappy about. I have memories of my very first fly Rod and reel I bought 34 years ago, i spent over $1k on it and I still own it....I have decades of memories attached to that Hardy Rod setup. Now if I could only say I didn’t buy any other tackle...well.

I use higher end rods for bottom contact,finesse and big swimbaits. To me that’s where the money is best spent.
Higher-end doesn't mean expensive. Try the IM8 Rods from Lew's and tell me it's not just as sensitive and powerful as other "High-End" rods. They range from about $70-$130

My fishing gear philosophy “good ain’t cheap, cheap ain’t good” - I really liked your point on breaking the cost down by the expected use over the year. When you think of it that way, a dollar a day is nothing. Totally worth it, quality gear that will last those 200 days each year is always worth it. Again great points and vid man!!

This was a perfect video and perfect timing. Fellas and ladies show this video to who ever you giving your Christmas list too and they ask why the Rod & Reel or any fishing equipment you asking for is so expensive. And why you need it. Just wanted to say thanks to Chad Hoover for the great videos and keep them coming. 2019 was my first year fishing in the KBF and I only did a few state challenges but I learned so much already from that experience, your videos, and also the KBF community in general. I plan on fishing a lot more KBF events in 2020 and was able to use the sales on black Friday to stock up on a lot of gear I needed both to outfit my new Bonafide kayak and to get rods and reels. I look at the purchases I made as investments because I plan on taking kayak bass fishing pretty seriously starting in 2020 so although I spent a lot of money particularly on rods and reels recently I believe it was a worthwhile investment.
Having a good rod is definitely a must, but one of my favorite rods is a $40 Ugly Stik. I started tournament fishing when I was 15 and am 35 now. My Ugly Stik rod has won me and placed me into the money in a ton of local tournaments. But it is a technique specific rod for me and I only use it for one thing and it is always tied on.

Can’t beat a ugly stick. I use it for everything. I love to get some of the better pretty rods but I will by good bait caster and jus throw it on a ugly stick
I have a 50 dollar rod and a 30 dollar reel. I'm 17 and I use to binge alot rods then broken down. Now I just keep the same 80 buck setup that I love, I thank Jesus for everything!! 😊

Awesome point about your rod/reel in regard to fishing technique. I've got a few nice rod/reel setups totaling $250 but I also have a Cabela's Whopping Stick I use for topwater.
Absolutely explained, you don't have to build the arsenal at one time. Buy it piece by piece, great advice. I'm 47, it took my nearly 5 years to build mine.
I love my expensive rods, but I learned everything I know and caught my pb smallmouth on a 5 ft. cheapo combo.
Nice coverage. Makes a lot of sense in how you described it. Like the theory of if you can pay for it in a year with how many times you us it. I spend a lot on my frog rods because I fish frogs a lot.
As i began to fish more often and target different species i am now beginning to upgrade my setups for quality and certain techniques

Good video. I’ve been using a med heavy 100 dollar rod flipping n pitching for 4 years now and still hold up strong. Bank fishing flipping 1-5 pounders over tullies n still hold strong. It’s a personal preference and your point is right too but as long as it works for me then it’s good.
Thanks Chad for your insight. I’m new to the sport and it can be overwhelming the cost of everything to get started in kayak fishing, from the kayak to the depth finder to all the gear you need. Then you see anglers who are taking 12-14 $400 dollar rod setups with them. I’m hoping to start with 3 decent rods and hopefully build from there as I gain experience. Thanks again for your insight.
I was introduced to JB custom rods and can never go back. They don't break the bank for me at 200 bucks and up but my god, the sensitivity is out of this world!
My fishing buddy bought me a Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel. I have never used a baitcaster reel before. It was a great cheap reel to start with $34.00. I then bought a Ugly Stick medium heavy baitcaster rod. To complete the combo. Fished all 2019 with this combo. Started out with 12 pd test. Then switched to 20 pound braid. Learning to fish a baitcaster was really fun. Caught 4 and a 5 pounder Largemouth Bass on two casts back to back with a Green Pumpkin Senko Texas rigged. So I guess this combo was $75.00. Shawn
BINGO!!! The most important thing when it comes to fishing is knowing how to present lures and knowing how and when to set the hook.
I started fishing with my uncle when I was about 7 and we used soda can with mono wrapped around and pre-rigged plastic worm setups and we'd catch fish. Once I graduated to a Rod & Reel all the knowledge I'd amassed made it easier for me to catch fish.

100% agree, After starting fishing KBF tournaments, I started to see everything differently, and in a year I had to upgrade all my entire arsenal to a little expensive equipments, now I see things differently according to the needs that have emerged on the way. And thanks to the KBF community in debates about this topic I find brands that I didn't even know and finally help me to take decisions in this matter. Thanks Chad 👍

Does a person need expensive equipment to have fishing sucess or enjoyment, no, absolutely not. However, like anything a person is passionate about, they ultimately put a price on their own gear, meaning how much they want to spend and what that is worth to them.

I agree with what you saying. I also used to fish tournaments alot and the prices were different. I'm 59 now and I have gone through the brands like most. Here's what I found out over the years. I'm a Daiwa angler and I also have Abu Garcia and Lew's. Here's where I make my decision... If the brand stands behind their product, they are worth my purchase. I love Shimano too but I can't afford those for the fishing I do now. People do that whistle down effect even now. But I do watch for what I want & when Gander mountain went under, I hit the closet one as fast as I could. That's when I was able to get what I have now. But what I was going to say is... with Daiwa they still make models that are made the same but with different features such as handles, ferrels, and more wrapping with a nicer pattern. Their Leguna is $25 and their Steez are$190. Both are IM6 blanks but set up differently. Are the expensive better? Maybe. But if you are out there making money fishing tournaments, I want to set for the situation. Not have to worry about it being"able"to land the fish hooked. Professional anglers are sponsored and they are set. So if they need something, they just let them know. Good video Chad! I like how you explained it.
I always go high end with my contact techniques and moderate price on moving baits. Either way I never go cheap. Like you said, you get what you pay for.
I agree it depends on how much you fish. If you go once every 3 months for a couple of hours then you will be ok with a 30 combo form Walmart. Now of you go two or three times a month for 6 or 7 hrs then I would recommend mid level gear any thing more that that got with the high end stuff

Just use something that performs and is comfortable to fish with. I'm just as satisfied with my chinese rods (they were selected craefully, I don't buy crap just because it's cheap) as with the more expensive ones from local fishing stores. I believe your after all the tackle that brings the fish, other than that, buy rods you can execute your techniques with.

I personally believe in fishing you really do get what you pay for. I’m never gonna chastise anybody for spending their hard earned money on something they want. My favorite rod in my arsenal is my G Loomis NRX. Yeah it’s really expensive but as far as the advantages I think they outweigh the cons. Sensitivity, action and the most underrated part of a rod, the lightness of it aiding arm fatigue
I agree 100 man. I've got an nrx paired with a shimano stradic FL and that rod is in my hand 80% of the time because the drop shot flat out catches fish on the Guadalupe river I fish. I tell people to try a 100 rod then put my nrx in their hand and the difference is night and day. I find myself trying to set the hook alot because of all the ticking on the end of the line lol
TEXAS RIGGED Mine too. That NRX seriously feels like a feather in your hands and the sensitivity there isn’t a rod on the market IMO that competes. I live in Georgia and everybody down here loves Duckett rods but I’m telling you I let people use my G Loomis rods and they make those white rods look like Walmart rods lol

There is a certain tactile pleasure to using well balanced, nice gear. IME, this is especially so in fly fishing where a light , well balanced outfit will improve casting accuracy and consistency. It will not necessarily lead to significantly higher catch rates. Though you may hookup an extra fish here and there, catch rate is much more a function of fishing skill and experience.

At this point in my life I tried to spend $100 to $150 on either a rod or a real. I've lost $600 rod reel combos in the river and cried for days.

For most setups my threshold is 130-200 for a reel and same for a rod, But now having 15 casting and 3 spinning setups im going to save up and get a dedicated big swimbait setup to throw baits up to 4-6 oz. Have one for smaller 1-3.5 baits but need to upgrade so i can start throwing 8" hudds and big jig hook baits. I figure a lews superduty wide and a 200-300$ rod should get the job done effectively.
Just got back from my seventh Amazon trip with a Lews SD Wide Speed Spool that is used for big woodchoppers to save the more expensive reels from the abuse. It's a brute, the only thing I don't like is the round grips.
I am definitely a low budget fishermen. I also fish multi species. I have mostly spinning rods. I spend more on the reels for mainly durability. I do try to get a mid range rod.

Your hilarious #WhistleDamnEffect, my thoughts on this topic is expensive is relative to the how good the product is made and how dependable it is. I agree if the set-up is something that you have in your hand all day it's definitely worth paying more for lighter, durable and more sensitive gear.

My personal best smallmouth (20 inch, no scale but fattie) was on a $10 shakesphere Durango and Abu Blackmax reel. I prefer the better rods I have bought since, but haven't had better luck with them. They just cast better, and feel better overall.
Yes, if you fish enough the rods more worth it then the expensive reel.. but both are nicer. For the most part you what you pay for. The 200 is the good price point before going higher while keeping good quality and performance! Great vid chad

Hey man you should try powerpro maxcuatro and powerpro slick. I think you would like it.
The last few years Maxcuatro is the only braid I buy, 25% thinner and haven't had any issues. The Slick is a lot quieter when you don't need the extra capacity but on some of my reels (Metaniums and Antares come to mind) if you use 40# and the reel isn't fully loaded you can just about spool on a long cast.
I love my high end stuff. I'm pretty hard core tho. I bought my spiral wrapped rod and cant go back to standard guides.
Beginners should always start cheap so they know what they want in their upgraded gear. Too many kids these days are suckered into dropping $200 on something they know nothing about.

I really like what you had to say. Makes perfect sense. I personally would rather get the best I can afford without being in debt. If that means saving up for 6 months to get that $3-400 combo then it is what it is, quality over quantity, but spend it where it's best suited for you and your fishing style.

I tend to go for action, feel, and accuracy. I mostly fly fish and Albright were the most accurate rods I ever used they quit making them but were around 60 bucks. Action is very important depends upon which type of fish you are after. Fresh water is generally medium action, saltwater is fast action and carp or catfish would be slow to medium action. Feel is drastically important if you have to bump the end of the rod to feel it it's way to hard. I have a 1000 dollar spay rig that you would have to hook the bumper of a Simi to tell if you had a hit, needless to say I don't use it much. Where I also have a 200 dollar 12 weight I can catch sun fish with. So feel is very important. Line reels rods etc.. are very important so just don't take someone's word for it do the research find the best rod reel line etc that you personally feel will improve your game and help you put more fish in the bag, because when you buy junk to make it work is when you're going to lose the biggest fish of your life. If a 20lb spool of ande,a 20la reel and a 45lb star rod are what makes you confident that's what you get. If it's a 65 dollar combo from walmart that's it. The confidence in the equipment and that it was operator error and not the equipment is what a person is looking for. If you're serious about fishing be serious about fishing and get the equipment that makes you confident. Also if you are fishing with pros and doctors and lawyers and people who own fishing stores and your wearing those beat up tshirts and holy Jean's you might want to upgrade your equipment based on the people you are impressing you never know where that may lead.
I'll spend at least 50% more on finesse and specialty gear. General reaction bait gear, I'll stick with $200-$250 on a rod and reel combo. You do get what you pay for.
The last year or two I've changed my mind on how much a good rod means. $100 is a good starting point for a good rod You get what you pay for

With saltwater fishing, we're a little tougher on gear, not to mention the number the salt does over time. In my experience its more efficient and cheaper than the service charges to send in my lifetime warranty rods to just buy rods that aren't the cheapest on the shelves, but with rod technology and endless brands, you can usually find one well under 100 to do the job for inshore and offshore

I'm curious to see Chad's answer let me tell you a funny story about me my Xfinity is green with green braid my Mach crush is orange I have orange mono and my mach smash is red I have Crimson fluorocarbon I guess that's the OCD in me everything to match
Kevin Sandells I like to use dark braid and fluorocarbon leaders, darker colors reflect less light and therefore aren’t as easily seen by fish and don’t cause as much “flash” when the sun is high or bright
I was just wondering about rod length from a kayak. I pretty much stopped fishing in the early 2000's and since returning to fishing and hoping to get into kayak fishing, I have noticed the trend to longer rods across the board. Early 2000's, probably due to materials, common rod lengths were 6-7 ft. Now rods are on the longer side with 7 ft a good average length. Why the change in kayak fishing? To me it makes sense to stick with slightly shorter rods being closer to the water versus standing on the deck of a bass boat? Good video as I am updating my rods from my 20 year old dinosaurs. What made you switch to Shimano and gloomis?
I only spend big money on my worm rods where you need to really feel the bite. I gave g-Loomis for that. Just got a pacemaker from tackle warehouse for 99.00 and they are usually 189.00 rods. If you buy things here and there and not feel like you have to have everything at once you really build up your arsenal. For the people who fish twice or three times a year, cheap rods and reels serve them fine. It takes an enthusiast fisherman to understand why good equipment is worth it.
That's a hard subject to "TACKLE". Lol. But that's about the best response I've heard.

Let me tell you. Ark rods Makes some of the best rods I’ve used. Very light and affordable
I've always considered my fishing equipment "tools". From the rods & reels to terminal tackle. i.e. everything I own fishing related- are tools. Why? If you were a reputable auto mechanic you'd want to use the best tool(s) to get a job done right. A high quality, durable-dependable tool. The right tool for the job. Your skill and tools are what you depend on to fix customer's autos & have returning customers. Your angling (mechanics) skills, knowledge and "fishing tool kit" are key to the return on your investment. So ask yourself- What quality of "tools" would you want if it's all about having a pleasant, trouble free day on the water fishing with your family- or the same question if you are fishing in a tournament for $175,000?
I think it depends on purpose and technique. Most of my rods are in the $120 range.
Try a st croix reign combo, 135, so it is a fair priced combo
Me personally i like to go more expensive on techniques i need feel for. like bottom contact applications
I buy usually fifty dollar spinning rod and reel combos i shore fish ninety nine percent of the time sticking the butt of the pole in the mud they get dropped in rocks etc can’t stomach four hundred dollar combos I still get usually two or three years out of a combo and I fish three of four times a week the one thing I don’t skimp on is line if you can’t cast worth a crap because of line twist etc doesn’t matter how much the rod or reel cost
If you fish a lot yes you want the best. Rod and reel t get r done. But you can get r done in mid range to. So I agree with your thinking. Get what will last. Plus you can hand it down to your kids.
If you can capitalize on black friday or Memorial Day sales, you can get yourself set up with a nice combo for around $100. Just gotta keep an eye out for good deals.

I recently upgraded all my rods from the $30-$75 range to the $100-&175 range. I’ve fished with them for a full season and I must admit there is a tremendous difference. Sensitivity being the biggest difference, I’m noticing bites I never did before and can determine what cover I’m in contact with. The other biggest difference has been how many fewer fish I lose from hookset to landing. Trust me, if you really enjoy fishing you should step into that $100 range if you haven’t already. One more thing, if you got $150 to spend on a combo, spend $100 on the rod and $50 on the reel. Rods are a MUCH more important part of that partnership.
what rods did you get? did you stick with one series or brand?
@@anthonycapo1998 I chose a brand that had several technique specific rods at my price point. I chose Dobyns Rods but there alot of other brands with a range of options. I noticed a big difference in sensitivity, hooking and landing more fish.

And my more expensive setup is $70 rod and $60 spinning reel
It’s a medium heavy Power, not action. The action is Extra Fast, Fast, Moderate, Moderate Slow or Slow. Many people mix these up, but the power and action are two different functions of the rod design and purpose.

Where does lews get their blanks from? I got low end to top end rods from all different makers and brands. I mostly try stick with American rod makers specially limited lifetime warranty companies. st.croix mojo bass- legend series, g.loomis which I don't know if it's usa made since shamino bought them, edge rods black widows and first strike. I really been buying custom cajun rods over the last couple years, specially the atled series. Atled non-signature $230, it gives my high end st. Croix, g.loomis and edge run for their money. I rather give my money to a really good American company over import company any day.

I'm a hobby fisherman I only fish a couple times a month I only use spinning gear I have a Mach Crush $150 a Lews Xfinity $70 and just purchase a Lew's Mach smash spinning combo with shipping and everything was around a hundred and trust me, to me those are expensive rods LOL

If you fish inshore saltwater cheap gear will only last one season, trust me I know. Also you dont have to go crazy to get quality. Just because its Mercedes doesnt mean its gonna outlast a well made Toyota Camry, but *remember* a Camry is not "cheap gear".

Two hundred days of fishing to make it worth while so for me since I can only manage to go 5, 6 times of fishing a year I should buy a six dollar rod and a six dollar reel...Where is the nearest Dollar Store? Ive caught 4 lb bass and a 14lb rainbow on the same $10 vintage japanese Ryobi rod and $10 walmart reel. Anything else is overkill.
For me a $250.00 Rod is expensive. My favorite rod is an Ugly Stick that I use for worms and baits where I need to feel the bottom. May change my mind if I live long enough but so far I'm happier with less expensive rods.
