It is extremely complete and the way you have organized, it is absolutely awesome I really appreciate your time and effort in making this video. I spent a few hours to see how this darn unit works before encountering your video; all the videos I saw (over 20 of them) were insufficient and inadequate in explaining the options this unit offers. Many thnx … specially your advice to connect to the OEM bluetooth rather than using the android screen bluetooth, and to set aux to manual, solved all problems i had with carplay.
The following advice is for most Android head units bought for bmws. Each manufacturer might have slightly different settings but it should apply to most. Great info provided by MrRamos but I found the “AUX switching mode” setting a bit confusing. So basically this setting controls the audio coming from the unit when you it switch from the original headunit to the Android headunit. For instance if you have it on “Manual switching”, which is how mine came by default, you have to first go into the aux section of the bmw headunit and then switch over to the Android headunit in order to hear music/sound from the Android headunit. Otherwise if you switch directly to the Android HU from the BMW HU while you’re playing the fm radio the audio from the fm radio will continue to play and you won’t be able to listen/play your music from Apple CarPlay. I did this and I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t hear my Apple Music or Pandora. I would press play and the only thing coming through the speakers was the fm radio still. If you switch it over to “Automatic switching” you won’t have to go into the AUX settings in the BMW HU. You can just switch directly from BMW HU to the Android HU. As soon as you switch over to the Android HU the FM radio will stop playing and you can listen to your music apps on Apple CarPlay. Only downside to this is that if you want to listen to the FM radio and use your navigation app, like Google maps or Waze, at the same time you won’t be able to do it. You’ll have to switch it back to “Manual switching” and follow that procedure again. Keep in mind that I did not have to plug in the aux cable during the installation. If your instructions say that you have to plug in/use the provided aux cable for your installation then maybe that will affect these settings. I have no idea.
Curious if when you turn your car on, does your head unit load up with the android logo or bmw idrive? Would prefer it to be bmw logo when the screen turns on but can’t quite get that to work
@@wristswissmade9229 yeah it would turn on to the Android display logo. I changed the setting to turn on to the last used unit, BMW or Android. If you go into the factory setting in the Android unit you should see an option to have it boot up to the BMW screen or Android or last one used. I can’t remember the exact setting but it’s in there.
@@FritzRamos the only issue I am having is the Bluetooth connectivity. And aux in. The sounds doesn’t start playing but the cap play and my phone shows music playing. I have to mess around a few times until I get sound. That was the issue with car Bluetooth too which made me upgrade. 😆
Really nice and well done review. I saw that the buttons (driving wheel and idrive controler) work with that system menus. However, do they work inside applications (for example in Waze)?
The biggest reason I went with the bimmertech Android system was the slow startup and lagginess of all these others. Five minutes would drive me insane.
Ive been looking at the bimmertech ones. I have my eye on the Android Auto one, how does that work? (as in does it connect to your phone and then run google maps from your phone/the MMI ?)
What's the benefit of Bimmer coding to trick the system into having 10 ingredients as opposed to the 6in? Do you lose functionality without doing this coding? Where you ger your bummer coding from?

Hi. The way I set it up was by using my phone as a mobile hotspot and then when z link opens up connect it wirelessly. However I may have done the initial setup over a wired connection

I got my unit from Amazon and they had two or three different processors chips. I bought the one with the fastest one and my screen starts in about 12 seconds, I got it back in November last year for my 2015 F22

I switched from 6,5“ NBT to 10,25“ Android and the upgrade is great. I selected that the headunit should start in OEM mode. Sometimes I have the issue that the display remains black after starting the car. If I press the menu button on the idrive controller the unit switch to android mode and the display works well. After pressing the button again the OEM mode works well. Is this a known issue and has anyone a solution for this?

Hi, thanks for the many videos. I have installed a 10.25 screen in my BMW 225Xe. If I turn on the radio of the idrive system and then use the navigation Waze in the android system, the radio continues to play but I get no navigation speech from the navigation system. Is that somewhere to set. Thanks in advance!
You'll have to check a few settings. 1) Turn voice on in Waze and ensure the volume is raised (Start with 1/4) 2) The volume controls that don't necessarily control the designated settings I mentioned 3) Aux cable is connected Hope that helps. Let me know

@@kylebown4104 so this is what I did, I bought a wireless dongle, with that I can connect the cellphone via wireless while I still can use the OEM Bluetooth. The caveat here is that with the dongle I cannot use the previous/next buttons on my steering wheel.

If your car has fibre optic audio cables in the standard unit they are plugged into the new connecter for sound. If not you will need to run aux for sound to work
I have a F30 with 6.5" OEM screen with no navigation and Bluetooth, and I installed my 10.25" android head unit a month ago. I summary some differences or questions below since we had difference head unit installed. I think most the android head units are similar but the user interface and settings are difference. Hope someone can also share and help each other to better use their new installed BMW android head unit. 1. I think it depends on the head unit make and model, my 10.25" android head unit can be used in 5-10second after the car turn on. 2. My head unit navigation is not installed or preload, when i press navigation icon, it just show a message to ask me to install. But my head unit has google map app, so I download the offline map to use it if i don't connect my phone to use map from android auto. 3. My android unit has wire connect to the car's aux, and my phone Bluetooth connects to the car not the android head unit, therefore, all the sound will come out from the car speaker so that i can control all the volume level from my car's volume knob. 4. My head unit has auto/night/day mode, I have selected auto, but the screen will not switched to night mode at night automatically. The only way i found to use night mode is from android auto and manually select night model inside the setting. that means i have to manually select day or night mode in android auto depends on when i drive on daytime or at night. 5. My head unit time setting has GPS or network, since i don't have my phone hotspot always on to provide network data to my head unit, I selected GPS with my California timezone, but the problem is "summer time saving" i found that with my timezone selected, my time is one hour faster shown on the screen. it's weird to see correct time on my bmw display and one hour faster on the head unit display. I have to selected a Denver timezone that's one hour ahead. that means i have to manual switch timezone every summer. ***6. Android auto with the 10.25" android screen has NO split screen function! I saw that new android auto release the new split screen function, but i don't see it on my phone and my head unit. hope can use split screen soon so that i can use google map and spotify on the same screen. My head unit setting has split option, i selected it but didn't see anything changed. After a month using the 10.25" screen, I think the most frequently use are: 1. Android auto to use map and listen music. 2. Android auto to use "ok google" voice command to phone call and start navigation on map. 3. When don't connect the phone to android auto, just to use offline google map and listen loaded local music. 4. Press any bmw 1 to 8 buttons to listen radio or switch back to bmw original idrive system. other than that, i think i will use my phone to play more than to use the head unit because it's not that comfortable to reach the head unit for long period of time. Most important i think the F generation BMW looks nicer than the G generation! by installing a new head unit almost feel like buying a new car and look nice inside now! With Fritz installation video, hope everyone who decide to install the new head unit will enjoy the upgrade!
@@305dadecounty305 YES! turn on your phone hotspot, and turn on the head unit wifi, and then connect to your phone's hotspot. your head unit will become a tablet.
@@FritzRamos through trial and error and research I finally got the factory setting code 1314. And was able to get my android Bluetooth capability. but the original android interface is gone. Amazon warranty is over due and still I have to get with manufacturer and see if they can help. Love the unit just a little bit mishap.
Did you change pixel density at all? i.e. from 18 bit to 24 bit in the coding? Should we do that? I upgraded from 6.5” Evo to 8.8” Android Snapdragon unit.

It could come from either. You just have to select which one you want in the android settings
iDrive A and B denotes the controller. Single Menu button vs multi-button if i recall

A customer rom would have been ideal as those setting tabs are way too small,. Text needs to be much bigger and bolder
What is the boot up time for this Android unit once installed and as you mention at the beginning is it 5 minutes each time you start the car?
Mine is still about 5 mins, but I saw someone comment that they have a newer unit and start up is 20 seconds

i have my android screen since 2018 so its abit outdated. I wanna ask for even the newer versions, does the gps tracker takes a while to connect to get your location? Cause mine is like that since i got it.
The idrive side pops right up, android side takes 5 mins, and android auto is about 30 seconds.
did you say no built-in wifi? How do you connect it to the internet
It can connect to wifi like a hotspot but it doesn't have data like a cellphone

I switched from 6,5“ NBT to 10,25“ Android and the upgrade is great. I selected that the headunit should start in OEM mode. Sometimes I have the issue that the display remains black after starting the car. If I press the menu button on the idrive controller the unit switch to android mode and the display works well. After pressing the button again the OEM mode works well. Is this a known issue and has anyone a solution for this?
How do you make it start in iDrive mode? I can’t even get iDrive to come up at all. Just starts straight into android
@@Spiceysecit has to be in the Factory settings. It’s somewhere in the sub menus.

Hi, thanks for the many videos. I have installed a 10.25 screen in my BMW 225Xe. If I turn on the radio of the idrive system and then use the navigation Waze in the android system, the radio continues to play but I get no navigation speech from the navigation system. Is that somewhere to set. Thanks in advance!
You'll have to check a few settings.
1) Turn voice on in Waze and ensure the volume is raised (Start with 1/4)
2) The volume controls that don't necessarily control the designated settings I mentioned
3) Aux cable is connected

@@kylebown4104 so this is what I did, I bought a wireless dongle, with that I can connect the cellphone via wireless while I still can use the OEM Bluetooth. The caveat here is that with the dongle I cannot use the previous/next buttons on my steering wheel.

Why do some people need to connect the aux cable and some don't to get sound? How does this work?
If your car has fibre optic audio cables in the standard unit they are plugged into the new connecter for sound. If not you will need to run aux for sound to work
I have a F30 with 6.5" OEM screen with no navigation and Bluetooth, and I installed my 10.25" android head unit a month ago. I summary some differences or questions below since we had difference head unit installed.
I think most the android head units are similar but the user interface and settings are difference.
Hope someone can also share and help each other to better use their new installed BMW android head unit.
1. I think it depends on the head unit make and model, my 10.25" android head unit can be used in 5-10second after the car turn on.
2. My head unit navigation is not installed or preload, when i press navigation icon, it just show a message to ask me to install. But my head unit has google map app, so I download the offline map to use it if i don't connect my phone to use map from android auto.
3. My android unit has wire connect to the car's aux, and my phone Bluetooth connects to the car not the android head unit, therefore, all the sound will come out from the car speaker so that i can control all the volume level from my car's volume knob.
4. My head unit has auto/night/day mode, I have selected auto, but the screen will not switched to night mode at night automatically. The only way i found to use night mode is from android auto and manually select night model inside the setting. that means i have to manually select day or night mode in android auto depends on when i drive on daytime or at night.
5. My head unit time setting has GPS or network, since i don't have my phone hotspot always on to provide network data to my head unit, I selected GPS with my California timezone, but the problem is "summer time saving" i found that with my timezone selected, my time is one hour faster shown on the screen. it's weird to see correct time on my bmw display and one hour faster on the head unit display. I have to selected a Denver timezone that's one hour ahead. that means i have to manual switch timezone every summer.
***6. Android auto with the 10.25" android screen has NO split screen function! I saw that new android auto release the new split screen function, but i don't see it on my phone and my head unit. hope can use split screen soon so that i can use google map and spotify on the same screen. My head unit setting has split option, i selected it but didn't see anything changed.
After a month using the 10.25" screen, I think the most frequently use are:
1. Android auto to use map and listen music.
2. Android auto to use "ok google" voice command to phone call and start navigation on map.
3. When don't connect the phone to android auto, just to use offline google map and listen loaded local music.
4. Press any bmw 1 to 8 buttons to listen radio or switch back to bmw original idrive system.
other than that, i think i will use my phone to play more than to use the head unit because it's not that comfortable to reach the head unit for long period of time.
Most important i think the F generation BMW looks nicer than the G generation!
by installing a new head unit almost feel like buying a new car and look nice inside now!

My whole android side went into factory mode, can't even put the factory code any more. Still have the idrive system. HELP
Did you try restarting the car or reaching out to the manufacturer?
@@FritzRamos through trial and error and research I finally got the factory setting code 1314. And was able to get my android Bluetooth capability. but the original android interface is gone. Amazon warranty is over due and still I have to get with manufacturer and see if they can help. Love the unit just a little bit mishap.

Did you change pixel density at all? i.e. from 18 bit to 24 bit in the coding? Should we do that? I upgraded from 6.5” Evo to 8.8” Android Snapdragon unit.
