That is such a cool old truck! Growing up in that era, I don’t remember seeing too many of those 4x4 Datsuns! I would imagine that would be a highly sought after rig! I would watch all the ads and even buy merch(if you get some lol) to see you save it! It’s so cool!
Just started watching this episode. The more astute among Us would notice there's no new carport and no new fence. Ergo which means you've been holding out on us with this episode😂
lol thanks for watching all those episodes... but a fella like you is gonna notice the progression in the background.. unfortunately all those projects were just more pressing than the fun stuff like this truck... the garage is built around it over the course of the episode lol
Buy valves and lap them in yourself, it’s not hard and you can watch a “TH-cam” video on it lol. My parents had pretty much that exact truck when I was a kid then bought new 1986 720. They run forever usually and are extremely underrated trucks .
Hey mate engine machinist from Australia here, been watching you for a little while now and love your vids. you should look at getting a set of valves for the head and either slap them in yourself or get the machine shop to install them if you're not confident. Could definitely get away with just lapping the valves and sending it if you wanted to do it all yourself, providing the deck surface of the head is decent. keep the videos coming cheers
Thats solid advice, thanks and thank for watching.. I think i can manage confirming the deck and handle the valves... considering the situation my guts would be to just change out the bent valves and let the others ride? you see any issue with that thinking
@ not at all mate for the type of vehicle you are putting it in with so many unknowns I would be doing the bare minimum to getting it back to a somewhat operational state, will make good content too everyone loves to learn a thing or two about engines/cylinder heads.
Don't give up on it, if you got no fund now. You will in no time if you keep the content up as much as you have it's good quality. Definitely gonna keep it up with you. Good luck 🤞
thats kinda the plan, i just barely finished the video before it came out so I am going to look into sourcing a full set of valves and see what happens
hope you dig it despite the very real, but also mildly disappointing resolution of this episode... i have not looked into the winch yet but thats good to know because this truck is about to eat my lunch lol
Nah, you have the truck a chance. I am the patron saint of lost causes as well. Warn 8274 is the model I believe, one of the best winches ever made. Warn still makes them, $2500-3000 new.
Do research.... look up online . Maybe some Datsun forums. Don't give up on it. That motor looks like it really was well taken care of. Well worth the time to fix.
Same engine as the Pathfinder. The warn winch is probably worth as much as the truck. Those trucks are fun runarounds if you use them with a little feeling....
Idler arm had a 3/8 plate l angle iron 4" ba4"angle iron , drill hole in center ,2 holes stock, to bolt to frame bolt into stock frame holes . Custom made, bronze bushings for idler arm this part is the week link about stock bushings bad idler arm de sign is week pitman arm good!
I used 2 have niian 720 nap z motor. We pulled out motor, rebuilt entire truck was modified. Motor was rebuilt Holley 3:90 4 barrel block bored out 50: thousands. 3 angle valve job shaved head stock 105 HP. Built 210 HP. 38: 12:50 swamper tires. 4"body lift, 4" lift. 5spd. Frame gussetted, double plate frame massive push bar bumpers front and back! Very quick, 4:11s fr & rear gears.
There’s several u-pull it yards around here I’m sure you might be able to find some used replacement parts. Enjoyed the video looking forward to seeing what comes next. Have a great week!
I ll take a look... its been years since i went because they only put the "old cars" at one and they did not last. but it would be fun do go back... thanks for watching i ll dive in
I was a police man in South Africa in 1989 I had the single cab 4x4 1.8l as a patrol vehicle. It was slow as anything, heavy on fuel. But boy was that thing strong. Off road it was a dream, beach driving was not a problem. And yes, we had to patrol the beaches back then where I was stationed. Watching the video just brought back all those memories. Thanks
it would be great if something did lol. i am failing as a youtube business man but its fun all the same. ... plus its always more invigorating to try to fix someone else's mess than it is to retread the mess of your own making.. not that i have experience in that
Ever since discovering this channel this year, I’ve got to say I’ve been addicted to watching your vids. Very chill to watch and educational in seeing you work through any issues that you come across. Keep up the great work!
They say beauty is in the hands of the beholder, if you feel like it's worth the fun and future adventure because it's a 4wheeldrive, bigger 2.4 litres engine, do a minor repair on the tree damage, pressure wash it. Interior cleanup a little detail in &out . There is potential fun then go heads up on it finish it. You got a fun truck 👍🌅.
If you’re willing to I’d would save it. They’re super cool little pickups. I’ve always loved them. Cylinder head exchange are some stand up guys. Always had good experience with them
I have not given up. And they were great to me. I might try some new valves first. I ll by the parts from them if possible. If it comes to a full head rebuild. I ll call them too
Keep on working on it see if you could find a 2.4 in junkyard with good head put your new stuff on it with new valves might be the cheaper option btw keep doing what your doing you killing it bud enjoy all your content look foward to every sunday for your content
Im glad you finally got around to showing us the Datsun shake down episode...thanx for sharing brother......🔥🔥🔥❤️👍🏽💯.......Love the name you gave it FOOLS ERROND 😆
Been waiting for you to get into this project I was excited to see it actually in the garage in a previous episode I’m all in for an episode committed to making that Warn winch useable again too
that would be an interesting experiment... i would love to make it work and not blow it up... but maybe you cant blow them up... i need to do some research
I had one of those trucks and now I regret getting rid of it I bought the truck from my father just before he passed away and when he died I got rid of it
Being a mechanic and having a 1980 Datsun King Cab 4X4 with the L20B, you were killing me at first as I watched you do this wanting so bad to be able to help you work on this thing. I did not think these 2 plug per cylinder engines were available in the 81 . ( I was wrong) I do know the 80 was the first year with the independent front suspension though
It looks like you can buy all 8 valves for under $100 and most auto parts stores have a loaner for the valve removed. Why not just change the valves and give it a shot, I'd at least pull them and see if the seats are ok. You could also get on some forums and maybe someone has a used head or valves too.
lol the weird thing is both my trucks a arms was different. Urs sets almost about the same height as my 85 but my 81 set lower and I had big mud tires on it too. I loved that truck I am still kicking myself for selling it. It’s a fun little truck
I'll be selfish, I really want to see this one get built. I was thinking, I don't believe that motor is super uncommon. You might be able to find one in the junkyard and snag the head off it. Or you Could lap the seats. (If you can find valves) The guides might be marred or wallowed, but it can't hurt to try. Really can't wait to see what happens next!
i am curious... i know nothing bout these but i am about to go to school.. there is no way it ran long with bent valves... so hopefully the guides are not wallowed.... if i can get a set of valves maybe ... maybe that will solve it
It's an awsome truck I've had a couple of them one of the best trucks I've had I was almost killed in one got t boned by a 3500 dodge dulley doing 70 thank God my truck was solid and not rotted
Hey man I recently started watching your videos and really like the diverse content and the way you explain your thought process of what you’re experiencing in real time. I am 22 years old and got into the dealer life cause i liked cars. I’ve learned a lot and know a thing or two about cars but watching the way you diagnose and work on these older vehicles is something that’s really valuable to me cause i’m learning a lot even if they might be basic concepts to you. But also because who knows if i’ll ever have to work on an old datsun…which i know nothing about and wouldn’t even know where to begin when i look at a car like this. It looks like a nightmare to me if i ever had to work on it honestly. I myself own a 1993 bmw e34 but i need to put a gas tank in it but its hard to find time to work on it cause im so busy with life im sure you understand. Long story short if you wouldn’t hate every minute of working on this thing, enjoy giving us content and eventually getting a fun ol car you can beat around…I’m more than happy to throw you a couple bones for this old truck. Just let me know what parts you’d need or what i can help with and how i can get it to you. Really enjoy the content and aspire to have your wisdom and knowledge one day. feel free to reach out 🤙🏼
First off I really appreciate the superthanks, that will go straight into the truck, every penny. but i also really appreciate your comment. I have been working really hard to make this channel informative in a way that the shows i watched on tv when i was your age were not (discovery channel shows like american hot rod, monster garage, great biker build off) I wanted to see the thought process, the decision making... thats always been important to have in the videos for me, because i don't know everything, it isnt easy, but I can usually figure it out and so can you. I honestly think my channel would do better if i skipped more of that and made it a little flashier, but its really validating to read your comment, because it is a pretty regular occurrence for someone to just comment "blah blah blah just skip to the work..." so thanks
Thats a cool little truck.. my grandpa had an old datsun pickup but it had dual wheels on the back and a flatbed with sides and back gates it was a cool little farm truck i think it was rated at 1/2 ton..and my dad had a little dodge d50 pickup kingcab 4x4 and a 5 speed with a mistubishi 4 cyc engine..they cool little trucks.. wish i had it now!
Hello from Texas. Oh man, It sucks about the $$ but i would love to se something done with this truck. Maybe a junkyard engine or powertrain swap?? Therre has to be an affordable way to bring this back!!
All I can say is: My friend "Bork" bought one new; loved it, beat it, and drove it forever ! I know that's no help, but I sure wouldn't dump $700 in it ! Maybe there's used engines out there? You seem to have good luck finding 283's ! Cheers, Bro, you'll figure it out ! ...Newk from Kentucky
It looks like a Toyota 22R engine. That is also a 2.4 but doesn’t have two sparkplugs for every cilinder. I would try to find new valves lap them and try again 🤗
The timing chain marks are only there for initial setup to help with align and will not lineup again with the crank and cam timing marks until after numerous revolutions due to differences in the amount of chain links vs amount of cam/crank sprocket teeth.
that makes sense now...after i have messed with it but coming from chevy engines it really confused me.... but now i kinda get it based on how many links there are and how many are on the slack side in the tentioner... the critical thing is how many links are between the cam gear mark and the timing gear mark on initial set up, making sure the side driven by the gears is correct
if you'd like to pay for it I can give you the number to the machine shop, I am sure they take credit cards by phone... but seriously thanks for the interest and letting me know.. i have not given up on it yet but it helps to know people are into it
I’m telling you the answers, it is how they work. get a dry erase board mount under a light on the wall to make a plan on. Good Idea to keep moving forward when clueless. Rooting for you…
I seen the ol' Lauderdale County, Alabama tag you pulled out from the bed of the truck. Theirs starts with 41 before any other number or letter. I'm in Limestone County, right next to Lauderdale County, and ours starts with 44
I’ve had about 10 of these, currently have two. They are easily a 300,000 mile truck. I would pull the valves and see if they are bent. I’ve never seen one with bent valves, usually head gasket fails. You should be able to get a running engine/parts truck for about $500ish. They made a ton of Nissan trucks with the z24 engine.
Do you know if they have cam bearings? This one doesn’t have any in it which seems insane so I ordered some and they seem entirely like a repair part that requires line boring to install
the machine shop ran the numnber on the head and said its a 2.4 head... i have no idea how to tell what is interchangeable...i would love to know because i need to source some valves
Man I had two of them. One was a 81 and the other one was a 85 I believe and I loved my 81 I drove it for along time until my power steering pump went out and parts are hard to find where I am from or they coast to much. Don’t give up on it once u drive it I will fall in love with it.
I'm late to the party, but I hope you keep going ... Valves are bent, but if you can, choose a middle ground and try and replace and lap yourself ... Not perfect, but should get her running.
Pull the two intake valves in question, if they are indeed bent, you can buy a couple of replacement valves. I’d drop all the valves and lap them. At worst, you going to be out the cost of a couple of valves, a lapping kit, and a head gasket kit. It’s probably worth that just for the fun of it!
I had a 82 720 4x4. I had all kinds of problems with the 4cyl. I ended up putting a 280z strait 6 in her. That wasnt easy had to clearance a lot and have an adapter built for the trans. BUT wow what a rig afterwards. The proformance difference was insain. Low end and high end. I never understood why more people didnt make that swap.
Lol. I think you answered your own question… I have put a lot of motors where they don’t belong. It’s a process. Fabrication, adaptors….time …. Money. You have to personally want it enough I guess.
Get on rock auto order a set of valves lap them in it will run for sure iv done it hundreds of time on many vehicles and i owned an 84 Nissan 740 king cab 4x4 i loved it
I'm not a mechanic. Life sometimes gives lemonade & sometimes you get sour lemons. From my observations you appear to be one of those individuals that can fall into an outhouse and come out smelling like a powder puff😮. The odds seem to be stacked against you. I admire your initiative and tendency to persevere. Time, energy and money are determining factors. Looks like it's going to be your call. I'll be praying for success. Hope you make some decisions that gives you a safe and profitable end. 🙏Don't forget to vote🇺🇸👍
you got a Mad Max spec truck, if 700 is what keeps you from a running truck and a giant lawn ornament, pay it. if it doesnt work you can scrap it? i love the old 80's series nissan and toyota trucks, so id vote to get it up and running.
Before you send anything off, I just got to part where you asked if any info that may help, I have had engines that sat for years and in a engine some valves are open adn some closed when sitting if all the hardware is connected, being that long I would suggest some valves may have rusted or gummed up to stay open, try spraying some pen oil on each valve in spring areea as well as the stem underneath (Block side then take a rubber mallet and tap each valve adn I bet they will seat back down just fine in a few taps
i did some of the tapping tricks, plus turned it over a bunch once the timing chain was on right... its still in progress... spolier alert ion the next video the valves are bent... dunno know... just know that they are
i appreciate the subscription.. i am mostly talking to myself all day so I am trying to amuse myself more than anything, I am always glad when someone else thinks its funny too
@ you are looking for an L28. I think the motor in your truck is an L24 so it should ALMOST bolt right in. Bell housing pattern should be right, I would double check things like input spline count and motor mount location.
nothing to loose but money should be on a ruststored t shirt ...i d buy one. thanks for the vote of confidence, i have never done it. but reusing the head gasket? they are pretty cheap, do they not compress at all when torqued? I genuinely dont know
@@betweenthesharksgarage They are a one time use. you can spray them with copper coat and reuse them just to see if the thing will run. I was assuming its a pricy gasket
stay tuned... i am trying to get some valves, I d like to push it forward to at least getting it to run, then we will deal with the other expensive stuff ... like everything else
Old mini trucks are the coolest. Any possibility that is just old enough to be out of the smog check range? I bet finding Datsun, Nissan stuff for that is tough and mostly junk to boot. Id be tempted to just put a newish/rebuilt 22r Toyota motor in it, albeit a bit more monkeying to do.
I’ve subbed liked and watch all your content. I am going to comment to assist the algorithm start by cleaning around and in the vehicle. Stop whining and think get a compatible engine and install it, it was probably all repaired, just the swapped or spare parts in the back. The Datsun 280z is a newer way better engine than the original.
@betweenthesharksgarage yep that's exactly right I like I said I rebuilt 2000 motor for my father and we also had a 1970s auction that I put a new motor in for him
Don't give up, this truck is worth the trouble.
i hope so it sure seems like a lot of trouble...
Keep going with that truck
agreed!
That is such a cool old truck! Growing up in that era, I don’t remember seeing too many of those 4x4 Datsuns! I would imagine that would be a highly sought after rig! I would watch all the ads and even buy merch(if you get some lol) to see you save it! It’s so cool!
“Puddins Fab Shop” machine right there, get that man on the phone that’s a wagon he needs ( Puddin the Datsun King) lol
i love his channel... if i could call him i d ask for a cylinder head lol
Yes he might buy off you too
Puddin gave up on a perfectly good Chevy Luv 4x4 so he probably wouldn’t do this one.
Thanks!
dude thanks a ton new valves are on the way!

not wrong... the idea of ac in the summer is a luxury i dont have either
My first car! 1984 Nissan by Datsun hustler king cab. Absolutely bulletproof.

its been a ton of work but it is paying off

Thats a cool little truck.. my grandpa had an old datsun pickup but it had dual wheels on the back and a flatbed with sides and back gates it was a cool little farm truck i think it was rated at 1/2 ton..and my dad had a little dodge d50 pickup kingcab 4x4 and a 5 speed with a mistubishi 4 cyc engine..they cool little trucks.. wish i had it now!
A lot of great memories right there!
Thats cool you found a horse button in that truck i work around horses and have a 720!!
that is cool
Hello from Texas. Oh man, It sucks about the $$ but i would love to se something done with this truck. Maybe a junkyard engine or powertrain swap?? Therre has to be an affordable way to bring this back!!
I dig it I am glad you dig it. … consider this a part one. I have no idea what part two will be but I am not giving up
All I can say is: My friend "Bork" bought one new; loved it, beat it, and drove it forever ! I know that's no help, but I sure wouldn't dump $700 in it ! Maybe there's used engines out there? You seem to have good luck finding 283's !
Cheers, Bro, you'll figure it out !
...Newk from Kentucky
i have 283s for days... i wonder how big a shoe horn a fella would need...
you can do it . dont give up bro!!!!!
yayy finally the datsun!!
i said the same thing
I have never heard of this truck. I have no mechanical sense but I love automotive history. The relics have life cause of mechanics
well thanks for checking it out... the history and all of these cars is really interesting
Elctric fan, puller/pusher flex fan.
Would be a cool build for sure
Easy for me to say restore it since I'm not paying for it but... restore it!
if you'd like to pay for it I can give you the number to the machine shop, I am sure they take credit cards by phone... but seriously thanks for the interest and letting me know.. i have not given up on it yet but it helps to know people are into it
That car 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 and the winch is a jackpot
its pretty rad right
I’m telling you the answers, it is how they work. get a dry erase board mount under a light on the wall to make a plan on. Good Idea to keep moving forward when clueless. Rooting for you…
thanks man
Winch is worth more than truck! Best one ever made!
thats excellent news... but hopefully they stay together for a long time
I seen the ol' Lauderdale County, Alabama tag you pulled out from the bed of the truck. Theirs starts with 41 before any other number or letter. I'm in Limestone County, right next to Lauderdale County, and ours starts with 44
Thats a cool tooltruck you have use to drag The picup with
Keep an eye open for a donor truck. You could get a runner for cheap and swap engines and use for parts
No replaceable cam bearings.
thank you
Look like they did work to it and put back together slightly out of time and bent them perhaps
Not sure exactly how but they are bent by George
2:06 i think it has the z24 engine on it
the machine shop ran the numnber on the head and said its a 2.4 head... i have no idea how to tell what is interchangeable...i would love to know because i need to source some valves
Not sure where you are but if you're in GA you don't need a title for a vehicle older than 1985. You can register it with a bill of sale.
Man I had two of them. One was a 81 and the other one was a 85 I believe and I loved my 81 I drove it for along time until my power steering pump went out and parts are hard to find where I am from or they coast to much. Don’t give up on it once u drive it I will fall in love with it.
well.. this one doesn't have power steering... so at least i wont have THAT problem lol
I'm late to the party, but I hope you keep going ... Valves are bent, but if you can, choose a middle ground and try and replace and lap yourself ... Not perfect, but should get her running.
welcome to it, the party is still going there are a few videos out on the truck but i am still fighting it for now.
You have to adjust each valve at top dead center I made that mistake on my prelude
I had an 84 with the 2.4 z motor super good little truck
Seems like a blast
I had a 82 720 4x4. I had all kinds of problems with the 4cyl. I ended up putting a 280z strait 6 in her. That wasnt easy had to clearance a lot and have an adapter built for the trans. BUT wow what a rig afterwards. The proformance difference was insain. Low end and high end. I never understood why more people didnt make that swap.
Lol. I think you answered your own question… I have put a lot of motors where they don’t belong. It’s a process. Fabrication, adaptors….time …. Money.
You have to personally want it enough I guess.
Thanks for sharing the struggle.
thanks man...lots more struggle coming thanks for watching
Before you send anything off, I just got to part where you asked if any info that may help, I have had engines that sat for years and in a engine some valves are open adn some closed when sitting if all the hardware is connected, being that long I would suggest some valves may have rusted or gummed up to stay open, try spraying some pen oil on each valve in spring areea as well as the stem underneath (Block side then take a rubber mallet and tap each valve adn I bet they will seat back down just fine in a few taps
i did some of the tapping tricks, plus turned it over a bunch once the timing chain was on right... its still in progress... spolier alert ion the next video the valves are bent... dunno know... just know that they are
@@betweenthesharksgarage Oh no that's not good.
I subscribed for the John Wayne reference.
i appreciate the subscription.. i am mostly talking to myself all day so I am trying to amuse myself more than anything, I am always glad when someone else thinks its funny too
Food for thought… an inline six from a Z car might drop right in….
that would be rad... especially if it would bolt to the 5 speed.. it has a divorced transfer case... but i know nothing about this
@ you are looking for an L28. I think the motor in your truck is an L24 so it should ALMOST bolt right in. Bell housing pattern should be right, I would double check things like input spline count and motor mount location.
It's about time you got on it
Very cool! I subscribed!
hey thanks man
DIY valve job. You can handle it for sure.Reuse the head gasket. If not to hard pull the pan and check the bearings. Nothing to loose but money.
nothing to loose but money should be on a ruststored t shirt ...i d buy one. thanks for the vote of confidence, i have never done it. but reusing the head gasket? they are pretty cheap, do they not compress at all when torqued? I genuinely dont know
@@betweenthesharksgarage They are a one time use. you can spray them with copper coat and reuse them just to see if the thing will run. I was assuming its a pricy gasket
@@Ruststored got it, I really didn't know the difference, the gasket kits not too bad but thank for the info..
Salam kenal ya Dari Sukamulia Kemayoran Jakarta Pusat Indonesia
Serbia here 😁
i love serbia, save some cevapcici for me
fix that truck, I had one,it was awesome. You will love it.
Right on!
What a bummer. I hope the video makes enough to fund som more tinkering.
stay tuned... i am trying to get some valves, I d like to push it forward to at least getting it to run, then we will deal with the other expensive stuff ... like everything else
is there no pick and pull junkyard where you could just grab a head? just need to know the source of the engine
there might be i need to dig in a little deeper.. i need to confirm what engine it is ... then go from there
Old mini trucks are the coolest. Any possibility that is just old enough to be out of the smog check range? I bet finding Datsun, Nissan stuff for that is tough and mostly junk to boot. Id be tempted to just put a newish/rebuilt 22r Toyota motor in it, albeit a bit more monkeying to do.
where i am 25 years is the cut off for smog... the battle with this is just everything needs a lot of love
Definitely worth putting the effort to nto.
How about replacing the valves. It can't hurt. I'd give it a try. It would be less than buying a new head.
All out fails 4bt Cummins be sweet in it. Pull the valves and see if they bent try to straighten see if it works there ya go
I’ve subbed liked and watch all your content. I am going to comment to assist the algorithm start by cleaning around and in the vehicle. Stop whining and think get a compatible engine and install it, it was probably all repaired, just the swapped or spare parts in the back. The Datsun 280z is a newer way better engine than the original.
thank man i appreciate the support
my old datsun would start with ANY key lol i used a house key once and it started...not much for theft protection lol
man i tried every single one lol
It is worth fixing up
Fix it youll have fun he said
lol
That's the timing chain tensioner it needs to be put back on
I leaned the hard way the tensioner only works in one direction.
@betweenthesharksgarage yep that's exactly right I like I said I rebuilt 2000 motor for my father and we also had a 1970s auction that I put a new motor in for him
