Hey guys, lots more content coming your way. It'll be shorter form, but since there's not much to do I figured more content will be good. I think you'll like it, it's a twist on a common challenge. First videos should be out in a couple days!
happy to hear more videos are on the way
*Fewest number of battles.
Amount = unquantifiable things (amount of water, amount of fun, amount of time)
Number = finite (number of movies, number of Pokémon caught, number of hours)
You're welcome. Make the fix. :)

I do like the irony of Oak showing up to berate the rival for not caring about his Pokemon enough in front of the new champion, a guy whose strategy centered heavily on sacrificing his Pokemon as meat shields so the important one could shake off confusion/stat drops and get the experience.
"meat shields" 😂😂
Hahahaha so damn true XD

In Gen 1, the AI decides the move it's going to use not only knowing which move you've chosen, but also the result of your move (miss or not, damage dealt, switch Pokémon). So it knows that the move you use will hit, and that their Pokémon will still have remaining HP.
That's also why the AI will sometimes use a move that's strong against the Pokémon you've just switched to, even though it's obviously not supposed to know you are going to switch, and which attack type the new Pokémon will be weak against.
he is asking how that makes sense logically
@@turtleplays5234 I know. I wrote my comment for the benefit of the viewers that don't know why the game behaves this way.
@@turtleplays5234 I'm pretty sure her ghost pokemon, or possibly even her, have some level of psychic ability by virtue of their ghost typing.
If we’re speaking logically, she could just let whatever happens happen, and react to it, much like if it were the anime. Of course, in game terms, this is basically cheating, but we all know how odd the programming of gen 1 is.
@@jcruz821 but all of the trainers can do it
It’s your authenticity that separates you from the rest truly a gem on the platform
Also his runs are significantly tougher then 95% of others on the platform
Fall Brendan they’re also creative, since he was one of the first to come up with these challenges. Unlike all those TH-camrs who just go through the entire Pokedex in order asking if they can beat the game with each Pokemon.
Well said
True. Those other youtubers are honestly so boring to watch. They have no limitations imposed in their challenge and they just overlevel every one of their Pokemon. With him, you can see that he really comes up with strategy to produce more consistent results and makes the challenge an actual challenge instead of pure luck and overleveling. I say pure luck because RNG still plays a big part in Pokemon but stilllll
Jrose is the goat when it comes to Pokémon challenge runs!
In Yellow, the AI of Lorelei's Dewgong is actually programmed differently to any other NPC Pokémon in the game, this is to prevent the Rage softlock from happening
Weird that That's what they foresaw being a problem, out of all the weird shit in gen 1 games
@@KreepyKat911 to be fair in yellow they also fixed the Cinnabar coast
@@KreepyKat911 I think some people were annoyed by the fact that Dewgong kept spamming rest
Maximum Valkyr also in yellow if you don’t have enough money and try to go into the safari zone the guy will get mad at you and eventually let you in with one safari ball
@@KreepyKat911 If you save in Lorelei's room with a Psychic-weak Pokemon that can only use Rage it bricks your save file, not just the battle. Dewgong will use nothing but Rest, never run out of PP, and you can never defeat her with Rage. You essentially have to purposely set it up, but it does brick the file.

The real 200 IQ move would be keeping Focus Energy instead of teaching swift and using it to lower the crit rate of Slash so you can take advantage of Swords Dance.

He also needs to get juiced up by peddling on a bike powered generator.
I'm pretty sure gen 1 NPC cheat and select their actions AFTER you've already performed yours
Actually, it chooses the move that is super effective against your type even if it doesn't inflict damage
It does both.
They definitely appear to.
Correct. Most of the more major trainers have AI that always tries to use moves of a type that's effective against your pokemon. This can lead to strange situations, like Lance's team only using moves like Agility or Barrier if your pokemon is the weakest to Psychic moves (this is why a Venomoth beat Lance's Dragonite in Twitch Plays Pokemon since enemy pokemon never run out of PP). Not only this, but the AI picks moves after you've input what you're going to do. An example of this cheating is when you're facing Blues' Exeggutor who has Sleep Powder. If your pokemon is asleep, you'll obviously try waking it up with an Awakening or the Pokeflute. When your pokemon is awake again, Blue should use an attacking move if he wasn't cheating. But instead, he uses Sleep Powder again, since it was picked when the pokemon was awake, rather than the start of the turn.
Enemies choose their attack after yours, it chooses super effective moves and won't choose status attacks if you are already have a status effect.

Also, an interesting avenue to explore would've been to evaluate the usefulness of Focus Energy in conjunction with Swords Dance (to minimize the chances of those pesky critical hits).
That's genius! Utilizing a the worst bugged move in gen 1, to block gen 1 jank and do crazy damage.
I love gen 1
I love the way you narrate your videos: there's always a clear logic to what you're doing from each step to the next. Keep up the fantastic work. You have a fan in me!
Who wants to see this revisited and optimized now that he's gotten so much better with gen 1 quirks like retroactive potions and badge boosts?
When you realize your strat of using debuffs/buffs turned Pokemon into a Megaten game
Thank god no one used Dekuda
Buffs are important in competitive. Honestly, most good RPGs have buffs matter, it's just that older RPGs tend to be badly balanced and have status and buffs not matter. Megaten had then matter since the beginning.
REMEMBER BADGE BOOSTS
Also, the Brock fight literally brought me to tears from nostalgia.
My first game was Pokémon blue, and besides a couple episodes from the anime I knew nothing about type matchups, move effectiveness etc. And Charmander was my starter.
So I did what any 8 year old would have done. Catch a bunch of Pokémon and pelt Geodude and Onix with status moves until they were weak enough to whittle them down with Scratch and Ember.
Never used status moves in any game
Always seemed like a waste of time as a kid always unlearned them right away
Love this kind of pokemon challenge. With so many more options than the typical one-mon run, you get to actually be creative and think of cool solutions with a team

I've always though that the metapod sprite in pokemon yellow was beautiful, i don't know why it's just nice to the eye
"Psywave inflicts a random amount of damage, varying between 1 damage and 1.5× the user's level.
In a link battle, the damage dealt varies between 1 damage and 1.5× the user's level on the user's side, and between 0 damage and 1.5× the user's level on its opponent's side in a link battle. As a result, if a 0 is generated in a link battle, it causes the games to desynchronize as the target will receive 0 damage on the opponent's game, while the user's side will keep generating pseudorandom numbers until it produces a number between 1 and 1.5× the user's level."
So yeah, the Psywave was always gonna do between 50 and 75 HP in your battle againist Sabrina.

Yellow is what I started with and grew up with. (Again, took a few minutes but when he went to catch pidgeotto I remembered I watched it haha already)
I love how much of this run is switching into teammates to use them as cannon-fotter. It such a casual strategy we all used at some point.
I feel like the Sabrina fight could be improved by setting up 3 Swords Dance on the Abra. Its Flash can't affect your Swift and the only other move it knows is Teleport. With the Badge Boost Glitch, you can boost all your stats by about 48%. (assuming you already beat Blaine and Koga).
This is why this is my favorite Pokémon channel. The amount of effort shown in these videos is insane and the genuine care you have for the game is evident. I never feel like I’m wasting my time at any point of this video and the more I watch the more I’m learning about the weird intricacies of Gen 1. Keep making banger content, because honestly it’s leagues better then any other channel attempting these kind of runs.
Never knew my level 9 Pidgeotto in the Yellow version was that rare. 1 percent!
If you grind your Pikachu all the way to Level 20 in Viridian forest so it learns Slam to use against Brock its only a matter of time until you encounter one.

@@Snipergod1024 Same here i did not even knew it was a 1% encounter rate i thought it was something like 4% i runned into 2 of them in viridian forest
1% encounter rate is nothing when your strategy to defeat Brock is to level up Pikachu in viridoan forest to Level 20 so it learns Slam.

I guess you could kinda consider the full HP potion Happiness increase a glitch. Atleast it would appear logical to do so considering the pokedoll Skip is also a glitch in your book.
Edit : Shouldnt matter in the end, since you can Force yourself through the hiker without bulbasaur, though much more painful i'd assume.

I managed to catch a level 5 Mankey in the forest, leveled it to 6 in the mandatory battle and just barely managed to beat the gym by using 12 or 13 potions.
I haven't gotten further than that but I would be curious to know how far you could take it
Well if you used the potions in battle it doesn't work since his challenges are item less in battle
Just with that mankey? Well... probably till the end if items are allowed cuz items in battle trivialize battles.
These minimum battle runs are really entertaining, thanks for taking the time to make them! I hope you'll do more someday, especially for the newer Pokemon games.

Scyther used to get a lot of hate when I was growing up, and I never understood why. I'm stoked that he got some time in the sun in this vid @Jrose11 ! He's definitely in my top 10 Pokemon.
The reason Lorelei and Agatha can use potions going second is that AI trainers in generation 1 only determine which move/item to use after your attack has already been preformed or you've made the switch out. Which is also why Gen 1 AI trainers will hit your incoming pokemon with a super-effective mood super often.
Oh man!
That feeling when you get something you were eagerly awaiting but had forgotten all about! It's like a surprise Christmas!

After re-watching this video, I thought of a hilarious "peak Gen-1" alternate strategy: Use Focus Energy to sharply reduce (instead of increase, thanks to a Gen 1 glitch) your critical hit ratio, thus making Swords Dance boosts more consistent. Haven't tried this challenge myself, and now I want to do this, and see if that strategy works.
