The best part about beating Red was that just after the climax of the battle we were greeted by a bunch of tweaked out Bellossom dancing quick as fuck on screen. Truly the greatest ending yet.
Some say that after this, Shuckle realised that his powers were too great for him to handle and he went on a quest to understand how to control his powers.
Such a bummer that my favorite gen, especially for how it opens up and becomes super non-linear, has such a garbage Elite Four that it's not as good for these challenges as it could be
I've been using a randomizer to hand pick my starter (still making rival get a super effective counter). I'll also change wild encounters, as well as put a 20% level increase for all trainers. For reference, pryce had levels 40-45. I'm assuming the elite four will be at 50s instead of the low 40s. Give it a shot man!
Yeah, partly I feel it’s a victim of older game design doctrine, where it was acceptable to let kids “nose to the grindstone” to deal with bad luck. I know RBY’s E4 is less luck based, but you see the same thing with Agatha to be fair. I think another part is that making it so the AI has finite PP means that they can’t become invincible by spamming double team, so it’s a bit less cheap to let them use status and evasion than in RBY: eventually, they’ll run out of PP and struggle, and if you brought some healing supplies, you can ride the mess out. So I guess that’s a third thing: they still assume you’re going to be spamming the crap out of healing items or switch whenever you get slapped with status
I just imagined a shiny Shuckle rolling around like an uncotrolable tank through the Elite 4 battle halls over and over again until it finally worked. I love you JRose, never change
I never knew about Defense Curl doubling Rollout's damage until today and I finally beat Pokémon Silver with only Togepi after I had lost all hope thanks to you. Your videos really motivated me to continue my run and I beat Lance just a day off of four years after starting my run. Maybe Togepi can probably beat Gold/Silver without items in battle (which I did use) but I'm not sure. Morty is the single hardest gym leader I have ever faced.
lol hell yeah, the first time I ever used a phanpy in crystal version, I used defense curl + rollout on Whitney and beat her in 3 hits. Rollout is so damn good in gen 2, it's really cool how defense curl doubles the damage. Nice vid though, I love this series.
I'm so glad you had this degree of success in your run. Shuckle is literally my favourite Pokemon of any generation. I find it utterly adorable, its gimmick amuses me and I just think it's fun to play with (though I'd never been mad enough to try a solo run with one 🤣) Seriously, possibly my favourite of your challenge runs so far!
If you're going to do more GS-runs, would you be up for doing another top 10 worst Pokémon prediction video like you did for RB? I really like that video, and also that you can refer to it in other runs! :)
@@MyCloudGaming he was referring to how so many boss trainers in gen 2 use evasion/accuracy cheese to make their fights more difficult. But what you said is correct.
I'll tell you what the worst Pokemon to do a Gen 2 run with is for me so far, and that's Paras. Paras is just awful. It's just awful. It's so slow! Fire and Flying types are so common! Both Lance AND Red have a Charizard! It is impossible to beat Red consistently! In fact, even with optimal strats at level 100, you've got a 1/250 chance to beat him on any given attempt. There is just so much that can go wrong, and worst of all, Quick Claw is mandatory due to a combination of Paras's horrible speed not allowing it to outspeed Charizard at any level, and the fact that Charizard can instakill it with either of its attacking moves. And you need a ton of sleep luck to win, because yes, you're never going to OHKO it with any of Paras's moves, and really, the best you can do is put it to sleep, use Slash, and still you need it to either stay asleep for all 5 turns, or you need it to stay asleep for 4 turns and get at least one crit with Slash, which is actually slightly less likely. Oh, and you're not done yet, because you need Espeon to not use Reflect, or you're doomed, and you need good Spore sleep luck against Snorlax, or else it's going to PP stall you with Rest. Hell, what caused the most resets for me was the fact that Pikachu can paralyze you or use Charm to make the rest of the fight impossible. If Pikachu uses Charm, Charizard is impossible even it stays asleep for 5 turns and you crit every time, so that's an instant reset right there.
MaxTheMaximumGamer I was thinking more about this and I thought that hoppip might be particularly bad. But paras might be worse because it doesn’t get a recovery move other than drains and leeches, whereas hoppip has synthesis
@@spaceangelmewtwo9074 I remember once back when Crystal was still relatively knew I had a paras that randomly became my strongest for a time by evolving with what I can only assume was a glitch. Thanks for the video! My only issue with Gen 2 is that the second round of gym leaders are so basic. I'd be open to seeing these older ones run on the newer versions as well. This is still entertaining and fun to watch though, so thanks again!
The 25% of missing all status moves have is actually a 25% chance to fail, so accuracy really has nothing to do with it. Like trying to use fake out on second turn, it just fails. Love the content btw, keep it up!
In Gen 2 Breeding with the Red Gyrados gives a 1/30 chance of finding a Shiny, on top of that he wouldn't need to hatch the eggs because you can see if they are Shiny in Pokémon Stadium 2.
He probably used the breeding trick, but there's also a glitch in Gen 2 that allows you to both find, and turn shiny, any pokemon. I used it at great length when the VC came out, in addition to Gen 1 glitches letting me get level 1 gyarados and stuff
Love seeing other generations on your channel. The gen 1 challenges are fine but it's nice to have a change of pace and to see games that I'm personally more familiar with
I literally had no idea how OP Rollout was, even without Defense Curl. I've always thought people whinged a lot about Whitney for no reason, but knowing how strong Rollout really is, it kind of makes sense. I love seeing you try other generations but agree that the Elite 4 being in the middle wrecks the flow of these Gen II videos. Especially challenge runs like this. I've said it to you a lot but I would love to see minimum battles GSC because it shows how Johto is structured and you can get right into Kanto and compare it to the previous generation in terms of battles required. You mentioning how there's over 100 really makes me curious. I'm not sure how I would feel if you were to like replicate all of Gen I challenge Pokemon into Gen II but I think this was a pretty good choice for a Gen II solo run. I'll watch most anything of this nature you put out in any generation, but I think trying challenges outside the box in other generations besides I is a good thing, although I am keen to see you get back to Basic Pokemon. Also you're so close to finishing the road 200k. I hope you hit it before the end of 2020 man because you absolutely deserve it.

I do like the "other generations" challenges! Also, very interesting in FireRed/LeafGreen pseudo Gen I runs! Or, "Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee" for Gen I remake!
In regards to Hypnosis failing at 13:45 Gen 2 gives all enemy status moves a 25% chance to fail and that's not affected by Mind Reader. It's a weird decision, since Gen 2 is already a really easy game.
What a run, I think Gold/Silver is a lot funner to see because stuff is more balanced, less glitchy stuff etc, and the luck just feels better when it happens! This is proof that they designed Shuckle this way for a reason. It's meant to actually be dangerous... Water is really the only major worry for it since in gen 2 steel/rock still don't have a lot of moves and they all have non perfect accuracy. But yeah, Shuckle was meant to be a legit pokemon usable on a legit team. Hell, he mighta beaten Red easier than Charizard or Venusaur would have, finishing at level 75.

But it's not like I can actually make my pokemon dodge. A miss is a miss, regardless of the text.
Wow, I knew that defense curl + rollout was strong but I didn’t expect shuckle to be able to solo the entire game

HP Grass was actually not that lucky. Shinies always have HP Grass or Dragon.

@@Shadowdoctor117 Shinies in gen 2 are based on the IVs of the pokemon. Hidden power is *also* based on the IVs of the pokemon. Two things being derived from the same data set naturally means there's going to be patterns that emerge.

@@caliburnleaf9323 gender is also determined by DV's (gen 2 IVS) in gen 2, which is why pokemon with the gender ratio of the starters can never be a shiny female in gen 2

Love that he makes it a shiny shuckle and just doesn’t mention it 😂 the silent flex. Let the sparkles speak for themselves.
Because of the way shininess is calculated in Gen 2, a shiny Pokemon always has a perfect Attack IV. That's probably why he did it.

Rollout is so broken. That’s how Whitney used to sweep our teams, after all.
Also you were almost always under leveled. There wasn't really a good place to grind and bugsy is pretty easy with a normal team.
Thats like my most vivid memory from this game as a kid.
@Edge Valmond most people choose quilava/cyndaquil which means they get to whitney with quilava
It's not just you, I've never had a Quilava lose against her either. Frankly I don't think Whitney deserves the hype.
You catch an Oddish or Paras and put the Milktank to sleep that's how you easily defeat it
Some say that after this, Shuckle realised that his powers were too great for him to handle and he went on a quest to understand how to control his powers.

When you enter the final battle of the postgame with 6 minutes left in the video, its gonna be good.
Imagine telling people this
"I found a pokemon that can solo Red at lv 74"
"What is it?"
"How much will rollout do?"
EVERYTHING.
Shame he unlearned withdraw. Pretty sure that also woulda doubled it.

lol hell yeah, the first time I ever used a phanpy in crystal version, I used defense curl + rollout on Whitney and beat her in 3 hits. Rollout is so damn good in gen 2, it's really cool how defense curl doubles the damage. Nice vid though, I love this series.

I'm so glad you had this degree of success in your run. Shuckle is literally my favourite Pokemon of any generation. I find it utterly adorable, its gimmick amuses me and I just think it's fun to play with (though I'd never been mad enough to try a solo run with one 🤣)
Seriously, possibly my favourite of your challenge runs so far!
If you're going to do more GS-runs, would you be up for doing another top 10 worst Pokémon prediction video like you did for RB? I really like that video, and also that you can refer to it in other runs! :)

Game Freak designing gen 2, probably: "Hey, you know what kids love? Opponents that randomly make them unable to hit their attacks 70% of the time."
All about extending the playtime
I think this is the reason the hypnosis missed. I think this clause supercedes the guaranteed hit that hypnosis was supposed to have at like 13:40

*sees gen 2* “dunsparce, dunsparce, dunsparce, DUNSPARCE, DUNSPARCE, DUNSPARCE”

Dunsparce isn't that bad for a solo run.
The 25% of missing all status moves have is actually a 25% chance to fail, so accuracy really has nothing to do with it. Like trying to use fake out on second turn, it just fails. Love the content btw, keep it up!
This dude is just casually using a shiny
In Gen 2 Breeding with the Red Gyrados gives a 1/30 chance of finding a Shiny, on top of that he wouldn't need to hatch the eggs because you can see if they are Shiny in Pokémon Stadium 2.
He probably used the breeding trick, but there's also a glitch in Gen 2 that allows you to both find, and turn shiny, any pokemon.

What a run, I think Gold/Silver is a lot funner to see because stuff is more balanced, less glitchy stuff etc, and the luck just feels better when it happens!
