We lived near BC’s first Derby house and went carol singing there once - we must have sung perhaps 3 full carols, getting more and more nervous until eventually he opened the front door, said “well done lads” and emptied his pockets into our collecting tin! He was the most charismatic football manager this country has produced.
@@josiekaposie5783 I’m not sure what the “bull” refers to? I'd listen to Crossley all day long. I've nearly crashed the car because of him. There's a genuine affection and retrospective respect in everything he says about Clough.
I can’t be the only one who’s watched hour upon hour of Clough content on TH-cam, and I don’t even support Forest, Derby etc. I’m not even old enough to remember him fully as I was a young child just before he retired Yet somehow I suspect that I hold the record for ‘most Brian Clough content consumed on TH-cam’ 😂 Thanks for the upload
Crossley does the best Clough impression out of all. Also Crossley was definitely the first keeper I saw, possibly the first full stop, who was punished for picking the ball up from a pass back. I think the reason he did it was because the defender played it back off his thigh. There were no opposition close to him, so I can only think he wasn't sure of the rules. I believe the pass back rule was only brought in after 92 Euros, do so would've been the first PL season. I'm sure we used pass backs when we won the last first division before the PL started
Try and get Russell Slade. He was at County when he was doing his coaching badges and had to go to Forest every week. He deliberately went early knowing he would be asked to have lunch. He’s got so many stories ( who hasn’t!)
I used to do a paper round for his brother... and one day when I came in to pick up a huge backpack of the 'Evening Post', I saw a blue S class Merc in the forecourt... and.... in I went, and there he was, sat by the post office till. It was like god himself had popped down for a tea.

Back then football was great, almost tribal. Many of the players stayed with the one club for years. Back then manager's were leaders who made managing the players their number one priority. Especially manager's who had once been great players like Brian Clough . All that stopped when players were taken over by agents. Now what have we got, managers' having to deal with teenage footballers who think they know it and quoting what their agents have been filling their heads with with. England has become a magnet for footballers rom all over the world. Good or bad? I can't say. But it lessens the number of talented players that the England manager has to pick from.
That's funny but if Cloughie said it he is quoting someone else as its an old football joke. It was in one of my early 60s football annuals when Clough was still playing.
There has, but I can't remember the title. A very good book about Brian Clough is "Provided You Don't Kiss Me", by Duncan Hamilton. He was a spotrs reporter for a Nottingham paper when Clough was manager.
The boss of the company I used to work for had an executive box at Forest and he knew Cloughie very well. One of the stories he told us was about a very well know player who was on the verge of signing and then it all went quiet. My boss asked Cloughie what happened and Cloughie replied "Nobody who has syphilis is going to play for this club."
Everyone in the comments saying he was a bully and a nasty piece of work, but every player that speaks about him has a twinkle of love and loss in their eyes as they reminisce about him
I always feel sorry for Mr Chipperfield when these videos end. It sounds like he had a great time in Nottingham and following Forest for all those years and it must be sad for him to be away from all these people he became close with.
What impressed me about Mark Crossly is that he said he was dropped for the cup final for being a naughty boy, could you imagine todays footballers accepting this there would be no toys left in the pram. Cloughie was the greatest.
When he died I heard a story from an ex player. Cloughie had dropped the player to the reserves, so the player went to his office and asked cloughie why is he in the reserves and clough responded because you are too good for the thirds. 😂 Would love to know who the player was.
Tommy docherty once said to Alex Forsyth a good Scottish right back for Man utd in his exciting mid 70s team when a Alex said why am I in the reserves the doc said because the third team haven't got a game 😂
Here's one story that's not mentioned with regard Mr Clough. Jimmy Gordon was his trainer at Derby & Forest & he relied on Jimmy a lot. Jimmy an old Pro was paid a ordinary working man wage. After decades of service he was granted a testimonial with Forest v Derby. Clough told the Treasurer he would be having some of Jimmy's money for the 'club' ie his wallet. After the game Jimmy eventually went to get his money which after any expenses came to £7000 which should have all gone to Jimmy but Treasurer said Mr Clough had already been down & took £3000, his cut. This is fact. Despicable on a man who had very little to show for a life in football bar his undoubted loyal service to Clough.
The word legend gets banded about a lot but in Cloughies case even that word doesn’t come close. In the late 70s, early 80’s Cloughie and the Great Peter Taylor where a thorn in the side for us on the Kop, respect and eventually reverence his how those great men are viewed in football circles in our city. like us he was left wing in his politics and never forgot his working class roots. The Great Striker and manager Brian Clough.

Yes imagine the civil servants of today who get a minister sacked for bullying because he told them their work was not up to standard. Cloughie would eat them!

That's why agents appeared. Managers complain about agents but if players had not been exploited so pernicious by clubs they would not have been needed.
Forest though, used to bore me so much, I used to leave the ground early, even watching them play in the Euro cup games, boring boring, 1-0 0-1, 1-1, 0-0, England where not much better with their 1-0s lol, But, Forest always reminded me of Russian teams during the Cold War, Boring Football...Boring results.
