My cousin is buried in Arlington. It is the most reverent place I have ever been. Your heart and soul are filled with such awe and thankfulness seeing row upon row of gravesites and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This song makes me cry like a baby every time I hear it.

I have been to Arlington. It’s hard to describe it. The sheer number of graves is absolutely overwhelming. It’s kind of like looking out at the ocean. You can’t help but be in awe of the power of the waves. In Arlington you are in awe of the price that has been paid. Americans should appreciate the opportunities they have. They should be thankful and take advantage of what they have been given. We are blessed.

As a U.S. military veteran, almost nothing can get me choked-up quicker than something about our military!! The first time I heard this, when he said his grand-dad clicked his heels and saluted him.... Torrential downpour!! Still, as many times as I've heard this, I can't get through it, without choking-up.

"Arlington" is a song written by Jeremy Spillman and Dave Turnbull. It is sung from the viewpoint of a soldier, killed in battle and buried at Arlington National Cemetery. It was inspired by United States Marine Corps Corporal Patrick Nixon, who died in battle in 2003. After meeting Nixon's father, Turnbull was inspired to write the song.

You had me at Trace. Everything he does is gold. This song has so much meaning. The 21 gun salute
Is so heart breaking. They did that at my stepfather funeral. It just hit you in the gut each time the guns fire. Our Vietnam vets were treated awful when they came home after the war. Many wished they were dead instead of reliving the memories of the war. Please do more Trace. He is an amazing man and Artist.

My father is laid to rest there and I will join him in a few years. Your comment about the ones being forgotten is bittersweet, fortunately we do not forget. Someone remembers ... be it distant family, members of the Old Guard, visitors who walk through and are moved at the sacrifices. Songs like this, people like you both from other parts of the world and from the U.S. remember and honor the fallen when they hear of Arlington and briefly think about the sacrifices made ... some like my father made it home and went on to other experiences and then there are ones like my Uncle who paid the ultimate price fighting alongside Audie Murphy ... while Audie was well known my Uncle was not, still my Uncle was a hero to my dad and I'm honored to carry his name. Sorry all of that is probably a bit much, but just the other day was 30 years since my father was laid to rest and yes I think of him everyday.
There is a special project that started about 20 years ago when a wreath company in Maine made to many wreaths due to a simple error when the owner was recording an order for production. They ended up with something like 10,000 wreaths more than they needed. He decided to take them to Arlington ... from that grew a special non profit. "Wreaths Across America" ever December they take wreaths not only to Arlington but to all of our National Cemeteries as well as City, State or private ones where enough military are laid to rest that there is a call out. A huge undertaking, in Arlington alone there are 400,000+ laid to rest - the goal is every individual grave and each of the columbarium (for those who chose cremation) niches get a wreath. As each wreath is placed the person laying the wreath steps back and says the name softly out loud. The promise being kept is that as long as their name is spoken they are not forgotten. Additionally there is another organization that places a rose at every headstone in observance of Memorial Day, this is done privately while members of the 3rd Infantry the Old Guard, the ceremonial unit that has responsibility for Arlington place a U.S. Flag at each headstone for Memorial Day ... "Flags In"
Something that most never realize is that the Tomb of the Unknown is not the only unknown grave in Arlington. The Tomb now has the unknown remains from both WW I and WW II. The Vietnam remains were later identified and were returned to the family at their request - DNA was used about 20 years after originally laid to rest. What most people do not realize is that under the tomb there are remains from approximately 2,100 unidentified civil war soldiers. Additionally there is a large section on the northern side near the outer boundary that is filled with hundreds of graves from the Civil War, each one marked "Unknown".
As others have said it is very much a place for reverence and reflection. The solitude is both heartwarming and eerie ... on almost any day you will hear silence except for faint far off noises from the surrounding cities and nearby airport ... yet those noises are rarely loud. The "loudest" noise is not really loud, though the sharp cracks from the rifles during 21 gun salutes will startle and wake the listener to another hero coming home, the soft wail and peel of the bugle sounding "Taps", it's impossible for words to express how moving it is.

I read some time ago about the heroism of Audie Murphy ... the most decorated soldier from both world wars combined. And to think he had to fight like hell to get into the military, I think he lied about his age. He was also a very good actor. True hero!

Arlington is the biggest and most sacred veterans cemetery but we have many around the country. Each one of them invoking the same feelings. Especially on memorial day when you see the rows of tiny flags bright against the stark white of the stones. And most towns have memorials honoring our local heros. In my area towns hang photo banners of all our veterans and fallen on every light post in the spring and fall. Taking special care to put the banners as close to where they live/ lived. You can drive though so many little towns and see those uniformed men and women looking out over their home towns. A simple reminder of the price paid.

My family and I have been to Arlington twice, my husband is a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Storm. We walk the rows and rows of soldiers lying here and give our love and respect. Thankfully, my husband came home to us. If you are in Washington, take a few hours to pay your respect for those who paid the ultimate price to give us the freedom that we have in this magnificent United States. This patriot thanks you.

There is a song called "Angel Flight" that will pull at your heartstrings. FYI, an Angel Flight is Air Force code for a military flight bringing home a K.I.A. soldier. You might give it a listen. Yes, Arlington is our most famous Veteran's National Cemetery, but we have several more. Other Country Songs with a Military theme are "I'm Already There," "Traveling Solder," "Proud To Be An America" and "God Bless The USA."

I took my wife and son to visit Arlington and I felt so many emotions just walking around and seeing how many men and women died for our freedom and safety. My son was too young to remember the trip and his little brother wasn't even born yet so I know we'll make another family trip in the coming years to go visit and pay our respects to those that fell for us. My favorite songs by the gentle giant Trace Adkins are You’re Gonna Miss This, Then They Do, Just Fishin’, I’m Tryin’, Watered Down, and Every Light in the House.

28-year military service here with action in Nicaragua, Beirut, Grenada and Desert Storm. We have all been touch by the death of a brother or sister in arms. Listening to this song, my tears flowed. We have sadness for losing a fellow soldier. A soldier dies and it acts as a mirror for us to look deeper inside ourselves. We bear our scars, fight our demons and have memories that we will take to the grave. My 7-year-old grandson asked me if I was a hero. I told him no, but I served with a whole bunch of them. There is something special about Arlington and all the other veteran cemeteries. They are truly hallowed grounds that demands respect that few non-service individuals would appreciate. But I guess it doesn't really matter if we are understood by those not in the military, as long as we come closer to understanding ourselves. God bless our troops and God bless America!!!

The Old Guard should be Googled to see the dedication and sacrifice and commitment the soldiers make to serve their two years. The first year they don’t speak, learning the discipline, history, and care of their uniforms. They walk their tour for 30 minutes, pausing at the end of the marked area to turn, clicking their heels, reshoulder their guns and proceed. It goes on every day, 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days. It’s a an honor to be able to see them. I was privileged to be able to see them in the summer of 1991.

I live in a small town in south Alabama which is situated just outside of Ft. Rucker …. The home of Army aviation. Hundreds of young men are trained here every year to be Army helicopter pilots . For a few years we had a huge music festival here. Thousands of people attended. Many of them were soldiers and their families. One of the memories I hope to carry for the rest of my life is the night that Trace sang this song there. The crowd was completely silent and his voice echoed over all us and for miles. It was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever been involved in. It was beautiful and never to ge forgotten by many people. Thank you for sharing this song.

My husband went to be with Jesus in 2009. He was a Sargent in Vietnam. he served three tours there. He was also with the 101st. "Airborne"... they gave him a 21 gun salute, he was highly decorated and I wish to God that I had been sitting down when they handed me the flag. So much was a blur to my two teenage sons and young daughter.Myself as well. He passed away from Agent Orange our Government so stupidly sprayed over there and died a slow painful death. He is at peace now. I'll never forget my 'Bill"! Thank you to all of our men and women who served our country. your never forgotten. take your hat off, help those men and woman and don't ever kneel when "Our National Anthem" comes on, Stand up!! May God bless you for your heartfelt reaction to this. Trace Adkins sang this song with such truth and meaning. Thank you, also Mr. Adkins and God bless you as well!

@ Debbi Sorrentino The person the song 8th of November is about is the person who gave Big Kenny his top hat that he wears with the feather in it. They actually made a documentary about making the music video for 8th of November and in the documentary they also go to Vietnam with the guy who the song is about to help him bring closure to that part of his life.

A very powerful and moving place. I get to visit my friends and some of my guys there about every other year or so. The noise and the chaos fade away but the people never do and I pray that they are never forgotten.

Arlington used to be Gen Robert E Lee's home. It was seized by the Federal government in the civil war and they turned it into a national cemetery.

(US) Our Memorial Day isn't just for remembrance of our lost loved ones but also all of those who are unknown to us who fell to preserve freedom. We don't need a name to respect those soldiers.

I don't know it you come back to read new comments, but if you do, you should react to the song "Angel Flight (Radio Tower remix) with lyrics by Radney Foster. There are several videos, but the best one starts out with 'In Memory-America's Fallen'. It is a moving tribute to the guys who fly the planes that bring our military dead back home.

The tomb of the unknown soldier with 24 7 guards and respect means that there are still those who remember and reverence the sacrifice. But as a patriotic America I am keenly aware that kids in school today who were not born when 911 occurred let alone all those who are laid to rest in Arlington and other grave sites around the world from military conflicts.
