Thank you for your service. My daddy is at Ft. Barancus in Pensacola, FL. He was a 3 war vet who never spoke a word about what he had seen and done. Would just say, "that's nothing little girls need to ever see or hear." How much integrity it must have taken to just not blow up and scream about the atrocities those men must have endured, just to end up six feet down and about one yard apart. His burial was scheduled for May 26 (his birthday) and, as you know, Memorial Day weekend. We played the red tape game just getting them to move to the 27th. They finally caved. Taps started to play, as the sun was slowly setting and then the clicking of heels, the guns rang out, all seven at once x3, the casket was lowered, heels clicked again, someone spoke to us, more heels clicked, they lowered the only man i had ever loved, as well as the only man who had ever loved me unconditionally, into the ground, heels clicked. They folded the Stars and The Bars and pressed them firmly into my big brother's hands, uttered a Thank You, saluted him, heels clickeð. As we stood to rise, my brother and his four young sisters watched as they placed a flag on his marķer for Memorial Day, heels clicked. As young people, with no extended family, there were no others present, we stood to leave, heels clicked, just as the jets went over with the one fade-away. Heels clicked. We thanked them for what we thought was just something they always do. Heels clicked. We then hesrd, "don't thank us, he earned it", with that they turned, heels clicked and just as surely as they had arrived, they were gone. We are all long since grown, my brother followed iñ my father's footsteps and enlisted right out of college, during the time the Vietnam "Police Action" was winding down, because of the respect shown for our father, and, now, his heels click. It brings calm to those who grew up hearing that sound. What it took Dorothy three times to do to find her way home, he accomplished with just one. God Bless America, as well as all who stand as Patriots to protect her Constitution. We wish you well and many years before Old Glory is pressed into the arms of your loved ones and HEELS CLICK with the smell of gunfire.
My husband had a military funeral. The part that broke me was the folding of the flag, giving it to me and that slow salute. Thank you to all veterans, including my dad WW II, my brother, Vietnam, younger brother, Desert Storm, stepson Iraq and grandson, Afghanistan. My current husband is a Navy vet, USS Kittyhawk. God bless all who gave so much!🙏👼 There is a special place in heaven for you all.
I was blessed to have all those men in my life, some still here, some gone to their heavenly rest. I grieve for them but also know in my heart, they are at peace now, no more pain or suffering. I am 73 and will see them again one fine day.
I'm from Canada and to be honest, those of you in the United States who have served has allowed us to keep our freedom too. I'm grateful for that. God's Blessings!
Trace is from my very small town in Louisiana & Patriotism is something we're taught from early age. The father of one being buried at Arlington asked Trace to sing the song. It's very special to us. Thank YOU for your service. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
The perfect voice for this song. Trace Adkins made the comment that he rarely does this song in concert. He doesn't want it to be disrespected in any manner. It is a wonderful song.
I loved your reaction and the beautiful words you spoke. 🇺🇲 HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY 🇺🇲 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! I appreciate and thankful for you and so many that fight for our freedom. My grandpa is a Marine and he raised me and I adored that man and am so proud of him. Take care. ❤❤
Thank you for the reaction. And thank you for being a brother. I'm 45 years old. I've accomplished a lot in my life. But I'm most proud of the years I spent in the U.S. military. Every time someone thanks me for my service, I say thank you. They call me a hero. I ALWAYS remind them that the ones who didn't make it back home, are the real heroes. Here's to them. I can't express my gratitude enough. God speed, and fair winds and following seas to everyone who isn't here with us today. Peace and God bless!
The second you go through those gates, the atmosphere changes, it truly is sacred ground and knowing that all those headstones are only a small portion of the fallen is SO humbling. My grandfather was honored with a plot at Arlington.
Thank you for your sincere reaction, I saw my dad 'take cover' during a tv show that had a 21 gun salute, there is nothing funny or trivial about seeing a veteran suffer PTSD, they volunteered to serve our country and will pay the price for the rest of their life. I honor you, my dad and every veteran.
I had two fool brothers that came behind a guy at work and made a loud noise behind him to scare him. I didn't see it, but at break they where laughing about it sayin' " yea he's shell shocked and we scared him" they made the HUGE mistake of lettin' me and another brother veteran hear it. I bitched slapped the one and he punched the other in the gut. Then we cussed them out. We didn't get fired...they did. We did get yelled at but I woulda done it again. How anyone could think that's funny is beyond me. Even if I wasn't a Vet I think I woulda done the same thing. If I may add Brother, if you see a Veteran, also tell them Welcome Home.
Trace Atkins said he only performs this song at certain events based on the crowd. If he doesn't think the song will be revered properly, he won't sing it. And thank you for you service brother. Army 2014-20
The picture of the Marine at the end of the video is Patrick Ray Nixon, who died in Iraq. This song is about him. That's also his real headstone. The part about his grandpa meeting him in heaven and saluting him gets me every time.
Not an american. Still get a lot of feelings from this song - and still grateful to all those who served and died to liberate my country back in '44-'45. Thank you, to all soldiers and veterans, past present and future, all for your service. It will not be forgotten.
Brother, when I attended my friends funeral and he had a full (21 gun) salute, I broke down. Just thinking about it right now, it is tearing me up and to see you tear up as well, my heart breaks. We are brothers and will be til we get our salute. Bless you brother
I have never served, but had a friend whose younger single brother traded places with one of his unit brothers that had a family to go on a suicide mission...his family (Mom and my friend his brother) got a letter from him telling thwm goodbye and why he traded places with the other guy..I have so much respect for our Armed Forces....and this song truly reminds me of that friend...he wasn't buried at Arlington but yeah...
I remember back in 6th grade my school took a trip to Washington DC and one visit was to Arlington National Cemetery. Just as we were getting ready to leave one chaperone was informed that the changing of the guard was going to occur within the next 5 minutes. Needless to say we didn't leave on time. Over 20 years later and I still remember that. I highly recommend anyone that gets a chance, should experience that.
It is sung from the viewpoint of a soldier, killed in battle and buried at Arlington National Cemetery. It was inspired by United States Marine Corps Corporal Patrick Nixon, who died in battle in 2003. After meeting Nixon's father, Turnbull was inspired to write the song.[2] Just a little info about the song
This song is hard. I have good friends and family buried in Arlington. It is never funny for those volleys to trigger you or anyone else. Know you are not alone. 👐
Trace Atkins is an amazing country singer and person. To you SIR AND ALL MILITARY PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICES.
I don't even remember the 21 gun from my dad's funeral. I know it happened, I was was given a shell, but I have completely blocked it out. 23 years later I still have ni memory of it.
As a Army wife and momma to a son in Navy and air force. My marine son went to Jesus. I can’t even see all those crosses. It breaks my heart. Respect for all who served and serving . ❤ Lotta love ❤️ ❤❤❤
Trace is special he tells a story that if you have a heart it will hurt. All his songs are stories that have so much meaning. Him and Toby Keith honor our veterans so much. Home Free has one ... Brothers In Arms. Thank you for your service.
Took a motorcycle trip from Ft Walton Beach, Florida to DC, first week of August 1991. It was scorching hot. Of course we went to Arlington and had the privilege of watching the changing of the guard. The crowd was silent, reverent, and still. Breathtaking and tearful were the crowd.
I'm with you in the difficulty of separating from service after experiencing war. This song means a lot to me. I could feel your emotional struggle as you spoke. I still feel like I'm not fully part of the civilian world. It's a work in progress, I guess. We're all connected together, regardless of branch. From a Marine Corp vet to you; thank you for your service brother.
Thank you for your service so much! 🙏 I've been to Arlington twice. It hits hard and takes your breath away. Literally a sea of heros. May God bless all of them and all of our living service members. ALL OF YOU are our heros and we love you! 💘
I feel you brother. This song hits hard even when you are not from America. Thank you for your service and all the best, from a Dutch Afghanistan veteran.
I knew the salute was coming at my dad funeral. It made me, my husband a vet & an active duty Marine all jump & cry. I don't know how anyone can get thru it without reacting.
Hearing Taps at my uncles funeral and the last call for a close friends dad who was a police officer I knew well completely gutted me. Only two funerals I've cried at/had to compose myself. I'm usually devoid of emotion even when it's acceptable.
If you do The Last Shots Fired please do the live version with the West Point Glee Club at the CMA Awards. It's even more powerful. If I ever saw anyone laughing at a veteran reacting that way, being triggered so help me God it wouldn't be pretty. There is absolutely zero excuse for that cruelty. I think I've said it before but I'll say it again. Thank you for your service! You are worth the struggle that you deal with every day. You are needed here for those that love you. I will never forget the cost to be free.
Semper Fidelis, Semper Fortis... Marine Doc here and it breaks my heart, makes me cry, but also makes me so proud for our brothers and sisters who stood before us paving the way with their lives. I still cry everytime. Thank you brother. Oooh rah
I want to say not only thank you for your service but also to speak up about your reactions after your service. As someone who's family is multiple generations of servicemen who are unable to talk about what they have been through and are still experiencing. Your videos mean so much. Thank you
Thank you for your service. Never had the honor to serve. My dad was in Navy during WW2. My Uncle ran away from home at 15 and joined the Navy in the 20s , rose to become a Commander when he retired in the 50s. Have great respect for everyone who has served us. Be well.
Thank you for your service. My brother was in a war and came back a different man. Love him still. This is a song that makes me cry everytime i hear it. Beautiful song and a song with meaning.
Thank you for your service. My oldest brother served in Vietnam and killed himself after returning home. I currently have 2 great nephews serving. One is in Army Intelligence and the other one is a loadmaster on the A-10A. So proud of them and pray for all our service members who serve in the climate in which we now live. God bless you!
Thank you for your service sir. My dad is a Vietnam Vet and retired deputy sheriff. Since retirement those memories come back and I see what it does to him. God bless
My dad served 22 years in the Air Force and retired as a master Sgt. He was buried in Arlington after he passed away 14 years ago at 46 years old. This song still hits me hard when I hear it.
Thank you for your service. Arlington Cemetery is overwhelming . it is eerily peaceful. To see all those who served and died for our freedom. Words cannot express.
I remember going to Arlington in 2003, when I was TDY to DC. Can't get through this song without getting emotional, having been in the giant litter box, from Jan 2004 - March 2005
@@TormentedVet_Reactions I was an EPLRS shelter guy in D, 13 Sig (attached to B, 13 Sig), supporting 2 BCT, 1 CD when in Iraq. We may have crossed paths somewhere, especially if you were with 1st Cav after April 2002
It will give you the perspective of the cost of freedom. As a combat vet myself, this song breaks my heart, while I am so honored to know my brothers and sisters who lay in this most respected place.
My Grandpa was a 3rd infantry war hero (unbeknownst to me).. most normal sweet/hard man I’ve ever met. Never talked about his service, never talked about much except our friendship. When he died at 93 years old, 70 years after his service ended, I didn’t expect the amount of work the military put into his funeral. The salutes the awards.. a man who went to war at 17 and never said a word about it still had that respect.. and I love that .
Arlington truly is amazing sight to see. I encourage everyone to take the time to go and see this wonder us place. If you can make it through without any emotions, you need some kind of help. I cry just thinking about it even now.
My Great Grandfather was US Navy. He got home one week before Pearl Harbor. He got called back to help with the clean up. At his funeral, the Navy had a bugler play taps and that’s where I started to cry. Thank you for your service and for all our military, former and present and future who serve our country and her interests.
I get a lump in my throat and can barely hold back the tears in moments like these and during live events. Proud to serve, Proud to support, and Proud of those who have given all. Eternally grateful.
I’m a Navy puke, thank you for your service though brother. Sorry to hear that you have to go through the stuff you do. Love to all our brothers and sisters in the armed services. God bless them all!
Amen brother, I've served almost 12 years though I was aiming to 20+, but I got medically discharged. I DO get emotional with this song, because I had friends who have lost their lives on duty. Hooyah brother!.
When my great uncle passed away i was not at his funeral and i was not told he was in the armed forces. But i do remember being told he was barried in the Alington cemetery and i am proud he was a chosen one and i am also thankful to him and all of those buried there who served.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I haven't been to Arlington, but I was at Quantico earlier this month for my uncle. It was breathtakingly beautiful to see that level of honor given to someone I loved.
My cousin was a Marine stationed in Japan, he ended up murdered. To all service men and women THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE!!!! RIP STAFF SERGEANT James Ryan Stewart😭💜
I have never been able to make it through this song without crying. Seems I cry earlier in the video every time because I know what's coming. To all servicemen, thank you for your service. I know freedom is not free. May God Bless you all and give you peace.
God Bless you and all you have been through. My brother lost a foot in Vietnam and has his days and really doesn't like talking about his experience there. You have nothing to be sorry for.
Dad. He’s entombed at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. He served in the navy aboard the USS Ranger. Me & his wife did not get along but I was there for my aunt. I was hurting but man when TAPS started that broke me. I only wish grandpa could’ve made it but I understand. Grandpa wanted to but how he was feeling about everything there would’ve been a 2nd death. I met one of his ship mates.
My father, mom, and sister buried in Arlington. I was 8 months pregnant and was in my Captains uniform while my brother was in his CW uniform. The 21 gun salute is definitely tear inducing.
My uncle had the most beautiful funeral at Arlington. Glass carriage, fly over, 21 gun salute. It is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places ever
God Bless You, it always makes me jump too when the volleys go off. I thought I was only one to jump even though I expected it. Don't be ashamed on how you respond. You're human love you brother.
THANK YOU so much for your service! You may hear it often, but please note that we all REALLY MEAN it! Don’t ever get numb to hearing that phrase! How are you doing? ❤
Thank you for your service you and all who served is serving and the fallen you have my respect. Just a little bit ago I sat and talked to a Vietnam vet and he he appreciated me and that is not why I talked to him,I wanted him to know that their are people who care and admire what are soldiers are doing for us. Again I admire and respect you
Thank you for your service and sacrifices. Thank you for the freedom you helped to provide and that we all are privileged enough to enjoy. May God bless you and keep you safe! With love and respect from Oklahoma.
As a war vet myself, thank you for you service. I can tell you, only US know what this all means and how it feels... I'm with you brother. Tears all the way.
I’ve been to Arlington and the tomb of the unknown. I couldn’t breathe. It took my breath away. While at Arlington I was witness to the funeral of a soldier. I cried 😢
I'm on vacation right now for my 57th birthday.. I'm 57 as of 4 minutes ago and I wanted to listen to a great song b4 bed.. this is the best.. I've been to Arlington.. My Uncle Paul Preston is buried there.. He was the leader of the marine platoon that put up the flag over Iwo Jima... I remember at 7 yrs old going to Arlington .. and a service man was being buried that day. I don't know who it was.. but there was a horse drawn carriage for this man or woman.. pretty sure an man.. because it was 1974.
I live in Springfield MO and they have a National cemetery here . First time I went I found myself in a place for civil war soldiers. The stones all just said Unknown Union soldier or Unknown Confederate soldier. As a veteran myself It broke my heart to see them all unknown to anyone after all their sacrifice and I took a knee and bent over and cried like a baby.
Know you are not forgotten and are loved. I do appreciate all who have served. You all take care of us, make us safe. That is the epitome of bravery. Please stay safe. Ask for help if you are needing it. Remember we love and truly care that you are alright.
My wife and I travel around the country in our rv. I’m a retired navy Seabee and one of the things we do is visit any national cemetery we are near. They are all sacred ground. Arlington is definitely on our list to visit
Im a civie bro, hell of a good video. I've been so fortunate that im able to try to make it in life a musician. Always had that bite in the back of my neck to drop it all and join. Everyone that served pre, with, and post you, i have to thank for keeping us all safe, and going out there and facing it all, while people here take that for granted. We need to make people aware more on these topics, especially when its shared in song like this. Thank you brother, and all that have served or are serving.
I want to thank you, BUT not only for your service and sacrifice. I want to thank you for starting this channel. Your willingness to open up and express yourself, be vulnerable and let people you don't know see you on a different level is something many can't do. I'm certain that I'm not the only veteran who watches these video, cries with you and is grateful to know they aren't the only one. When you say "don't just thank them for their service. Ask them how they are. Talk to them." You are doing that very thing everytime you sit in front of the camera. Bless you brother.

God bless
I’ve been there…and I cried all the way through it…just watching here the tears are flowing…I just can’t help it…😢😢
My dad served 22 years in the Air Force and retired as a master Sgt. He was buried in Arlington after he passed away 14 years ago at 46 years old. This song still hits me hard when I hear it.
Thank you for your service brother, I know I struggle day and night I also know it will end soon. Stay strong.
God Bless. As a vet, I salute you brother. You are always loved and needed, especially now.
We were there at the same time.
I was with the 185th Aviation Brigade
It will give you the perspective of the cost of freedom. As a combat vet myself, this song breaks my heart, while I am so honored to know my brothers and sisters who lay in this most respected place.
Thank you for your service!
Thank you for your service and sacrifice you made . To me Arlington is such a solemn and sacred place . I'll never forget my visit there.
I have many friends that has served i never got the chance i want to thank you for what you do because it gives us more to understand to talk to them
I tear up and I've never been in the military. Love and respect to you.
Thank you for your choice to save us. My chest got tight, and I cried when you spoke of the funeral. I send you my prayers and I am grateful for you!
Arlington cemetery is in Arlington VA. I live .7 miles away I have 3 family members buried there and 4 friends.
I am crying my eyes out here 😢. Thank you for your service.
Went to Arlington Over Labor Day...no words can describe the feelings.
Thank You for your service and Welcome Home
Great video and knowledge 👌 I love how real you get with that emotion at the end, ❤️
It is about as authentic as you can get. Thanks for your kinds words.
Keep strong big man.
Thank you for your service 🙏🙏
I just want to give you a hug. I’m so sorry 😢😢
You should react to his song “Empty Chair”
God Bless You, it always makes me jump too when the volleys go off. I thought I was only one to jump even though I expected it. Don't be ashamed on how you respond. You're human love you brother.
THANK YOU so much for your service! You may hear it often, but please note that we all REALLY MEAN it! Don’t ever get numb to hearing that phrase! How are you doing? ❤
Thank you for you support!!!
GOD bless you sir. My dad gave his life in Viet Nam. Thank you for your service.
I've been out 30+ and it still gets to me.
Thank you for your service. And thank you for your heart.
Welcome home. God bless you always.
Thank you for your service!! May God Bless you! Prayers for you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Know you are not forgotten and are loved. I do appreciate all who have served. You all take care of us, make us safe. That is the epitome of bravery. Please stay safe. Ask for help if you are needing it. Remember we love and truly care that you are alright.
As USAF veteran I have a special place in my heart ❤ for the men who are no longer with us 😢that I served with ❤
Thank you, I pray peace for you.
My wife and I travel around the country in our rv. I’m a retired navy Seabee and one of the things we do is visit any national cemetery we are near. They are all sacred ground. Arlington is definitely on our list to visit
New sub. Welcome home Brother from an old Vietnam Vet. I'm glad you are here.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice 🙏 ❤️
Thank you for your service from a fellow combat vet.
Thanks for your service!
Thank you so much!!!
I visited Arlington National Cemetery and witnessed the Changing of the Guard. Most emotional thing I ever did . Proud I went there.
It's in VA I live about an hour away. My granddad was supposed to be there but we had it moved closer to our home town
