    I have 4 Wolfgang Standards. I LOVE the neck on these! My favorite neck of all my guitars. I have a Frankie, an Eruption, and a 5150 Standard as well but I play the Wolfgangs more than any of my 22 guitars. That baked maple feels so great.

    At 18 minutes he speaks of the switch being rewired. Just letting you all know you don't have to rewire...just open the back plate, take off the nut on the switch and flip it. Personally I turned mine 90 degrees so forward is the front (neck) and to the back its the bridge. that was I don't hit it out of position no matter how I hit it. It's also easier to just look down and know which position you're in. I have a standard, a special, a 5150 and an ernie ball Axis and have the switches all the same. Amazing review brother!

    Love my Wolfgangs. I have a Special and a Standard. Love the baked maple neck on the Standard. The Standard however, had 9 high frets that needed filing and the intonation was way off. I also upgraded with a big brass trem block and I upgraded the treble bleed circuit and put a Bournes low friction pot in. This guitar rocks.

      I usually play slightly hot vintage pups (Dimarzio MoJo) but love the way these EVH pickups sound even though they are hot and loud. Harmonics fly off these things. This axe has big crunch. The Floyd Rose Special that is in the WG Standard has a hardened steel base plate. So I changed the saddles to hardened steel saddles and put hardened steel inserts in. Then I put the big brass block in. Those upgrades made a world of difference. Rock on man. @@Guitars-GearandMusic

      I am sure they are going to be amazing. Hell, the first MIJ's were just as good as the Americans. So good, that they sent them to Mexico because of the price point. I think these are a touch overpriced. They should have hit the 1999.00 price point.

      I just picked up the ivory MIJ Wolfgang signature, yesterday. i’ve been bugging my sales rep at Sweetwater to get me a demo so I wouldn’t have to pay $2700 for it. I got it damn close to what you are suggesting they sell them for. Worth every penny. And when you think of the American signature models costing $4500 for the same thing I’d say $2700 is a very good deal. Definitely you should do a video of one of them. I couldn’t wait to do my video. Every bit as good if not better than the American Wolfgang signature.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you can get more distortion from going with a hotter pickup....and the EVH pickups are literally some of the best. And there are plenty other pickups out there that would work just as well. The Tone Zone from DiMarzio was actually designed by EVH and then they made some changes at the last minute for the MM EVH guitars. But......if you are having a sustain issue it is usually in the setup of the guitar. Generally the action is too low if it is a sustain issue across the neck. If only in a certain area it can be a fret issue. One may be too high or too low. But before you go pickup hunting think about the type of music you play and what you are after. Do you want more sustain and a tight bottom end....go with a ceramic pickup. Do you play classic rock....go with a PAF.

    A MINOR ERROR Channel had some hard criticisms of this guitar. Before I viewed that review I was intrigued by the glowing reviews. His negative reviews targeted the tone wood (or lack of tone wood) that made it difficult to dial in a decent rhythm and lead tone, the pickups and allegedly the Floyd Rose trem system being mounted nearly up against the cavity restricting range of motion. Can you relate to any of those comments?

    • @angryguyhateseverything
      @angryguyhateseverything หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dude for the money this little thing rocks. Now I do like the pups mounted directly to the body. I think it helps everything resonate more. As far as the range of the trem, you have to understand this at the front of for this guitar. It does not go back....but that does not limit it at all. Eddie believed that everything should be touching at all times to maximize the tone...and I can't argue . To this day my Peavey Wolfgang is still one of the best sounding guitars I have ever owned or played. Everything is not for everybody. Personally I love the EVH guitars....especially the Peavey models. they are just tanks. If you play the guitar and you like it.....get it. For the money... it is about the best thing on the market.

    I just picked one up a week ago for $300 practically new the only issues I had were the radius on on the Floyd did not work with the 16 inch radius so put shims on the saddles to compensate and the locking nut constantly made a creaking noise realizing the nut would move so I put glue on nut that solved the problem and I float the bridge cause I don't like the bridge knock on body everytime I use trem plus had to put a longer scre in on the wheel for the truss rod was vibrating when playing took neck off and the adjustment wheel fell off good video

    I'd love to see you do a review, through just a regular old amp. I have a 2012 WG Special Korea. Of course has the Birds Eye you mentioned, and Stainless steel frets. I've never used Fractal and etc, but I know lots are using them. My only concern with those modeling amps, is that if I put a pickup and strings on a broomstick, and dial up a Plexi on Fractal, would it sound like Angus LoL. In other words, will anything you run through a Fracta,l sound like a 3 or 4k guitar ? Great review !! Very thorough. Sounds great, but does the amp make it better than it is.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the whole thing about a fractal or kemper is that they have got it down so good to the point that they do behave a lot like an amp. The guitar does have a great deal to do with the sound you get, even out of the new modelers but I do understand exactly what your are saying. There is something about the way a 4x12 cab breathes and adds greatly to the sound, but by the time you mic one of the speakers and send it FOH, the sound is about the same, which of course it the point of the fractal and kemper. You just simply bypass the middle part, which is the amp. But on the flipside, I did a test, not a video, of a 5150 III 6L6 against a 5150 III EL34. With the settings the same on the same guitar, I really could only tell maybe a 5% difference in the sound. When I changed the guitar, granted they were all highend guitars with high gain pickups, they all sounded shockingly similar. The big differences started coming in when I would play guitars with vastly different pickups and it works exactly the same on the fractal and kemper. So if I did the review on a modeler, then did it on a cab mic'd, the conclusion would end up being about the same.

      Not at all on mine... thank God that wasn't also an issue with mine, along with the other issues. See my post above if you're interested (select "Newest First" for post sorting).
      I think Fender needs to tighten up and oversee much better Quality Control in the Indonesian factory these models are produced in. By comparison, cheaper PRS guitars are much better than these... but the two brands are similar in pricing (Hence why I made the comparison). But that does nothing for me... I am not a huge PRS enthusiast, personally... although they are fine guitars. I just don't like the design and look compared to Strats, Wolfgangs, and other brand designs. But again, PRS quality has Fender/EVH beat when it comes to less expensive models. I have heard of problems with a few people because the cheap PRSes are made in Indonesia also. Maybe the Indonesians don't really give a rat's @$$ about consistent quality... for Fender or PRS?
      The "Strings on the edge of the neck" issue would have been a return purchase for me. Make sure the neck is not warped to the side... that cannot be remedied at all! Contact Fender if it's that bad, and force them to send you a replacement guitar, or at least a replacement neck. With some work these guitars have the potential to be decent instruments. But those types of problems should not be. Mine, for example, has perfectly even distance from the edge of the fretboard at both E strings... and there is a 1/8 inch or probably more distance from the edge of the fretboard to the string. Maybe I got lucky with mine in that regard?
      Sorry to hear your problem. Don't allow those kind of flaws... I've been there before, and serious neck/fretboard issues such as that are unacceptable! You'll end up hating the guitar and not want to play it. Good luck.

      @@4GuitarTrance Yeah on my Mexican EVH not only was the neck completely loose when I got, and yet amazingly that got out of sweetwaters how ever many point inspection, but the bridge was not lined up with the neck. Completely inexcusable on any level. Not only did EVH not catch this but neither did sweetwater. I do have 2 indonesian Ibanez guitars and they are as close to perfect as you can get from indonesia. Actually one of them is my main gigging guitar. Don't really want to beat up my more expensive guitars from gigging and it was worked flawlessly for the last two years, except for the fact that I had to sand down the locking nut because it was way too high, which again baffles me.

    Hey Trace ! I recently watched some videos that use a brass-hammer in order to level a fret. Would you recommend this for one or two higher frets ? I found my 13th and 15th frets to be slightly higher and only on the treble side . The other half ( that has the 3 bass strings ) is level in these frets . I'm thinking of giving it a try myself even though I'm really scared not to do any huge damage . The other filling process just seems quite bizarre and unfamiliar.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try that. the problem is that brass is harder than nickle so you would have to hit it a lot to get that to work.. More then likely they are driving the fret down into the neck a little more and off set the high fret. Personally I would tape the neck and use sandpaper to try and lower it because we are talking a minimal amount to remove. You could do it without having to buy a set of files, just make sure you get some emery cloth to repolish the fret.

    • @manosg7325
      @manosg7325 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manosg7325 Well yes but your strings do that anyway over time and you are removing a very small amount of fret. And using your finger the sandpaper will still wrap around the fret a little. I would do that before hitting it with a brass hammer. You really don't want to drive the frets further into the neck. And also, the frets are glued in. You will have to beat the hell out of it to accomplish what you want. I would buy a fret rocker. It is a little bar of steel used to check height between 3 frets or so. That way you can gauge it perfectly if you start to sand and remove exactly what you need.

    I purchased a Wolfgang Standard just to have one ( I play modded strats ) -- and I liked the unusual finish.
    Personally, mine is a fairly decent guitar, all things considered... LOVE the scale of the neck, but the action absolutely sucks right out of the box. The locking nut of the cheaper Floyd Rose is absolutely terrible compared to higher-end Floyds. The nut was set 4 times higher than it should have been... and the only way to remedy the situation is to file the base of the actual nut down which, is a b!tch to do considering the strength of the metal and the fact I had no belt sander or any fast way to get the height down low enough for proper setup.
    Also, the locking nut has MUCH MORE of a radius then the fretboard... so even when you get the strings set to a proper height between the nut and the first fret the center strings (D, G -- A and B are higher than should be also but not nearly as terrible as the D and G strings), so an even height across the width of the fretboard is NOT possible because of the mismatched radius between the actual fretboard and the locking nut. Again... it is bad... and was a terrible choice for use on this fretboard. You cannot file down the actual neck material under the nut because it is already so thin I would worry about the headstock snapping off if it ever fell over for whatever reason...so THAT was out of the question for me. I have seen vids where some have filed the actual neck under the nut in order to get the action a bit lower... but they are braver than I am.
    The body is solid, finish is very nice on mine. Pickups are great. Fretwork is ok but a little protruding on the edges and not nearly as smooth as they should be and in need of some serious dressing. The tuning machines compared to other Wolfgangs SUCK! Guitar has a good sound and plenty of life because of body resonance and thickness.
    The tremolo is ok, but does not stay in tune the way it should. I mean, if you have a locking tremolo and it will not stay in -near-perfect tune then it's time for a better quality tremolo. I'm surprised the Floyd Rose folks even allow these tremolos.
    I could go on about the ups and downs of this guitar, but I won't. Let's just say for my tastes the Wolfgang Standard needs some serious work out of the box, and I would recommend some parts upgrades in order to come anywhere close to higher-end Wolfgang models. I also will say the original Peavey version beats the living crap out of Fender's.
    I will also say if Edward were still alive and overseeing these guitars he would probably tell Fender NOT to put his name on them until they did some improvements... regardless of price! Also, I've seen and played quite a few of these guitars and, while nice in many ways, maybe Indonesian luthiers are anything but LUTHIERS! Quality control of different runs of the very same model is not acceptable... borderline terrible!
    It a close-to-nice guitar for the price I suppose. I'm glad I purchased mine just to say I have one at least similar to the models Edward would have played and endorsed. But all-in-all if I had to do over again I would have gone for one of the more expensive models. I am an AVID Strat player, so I am a bit biased and very picky about my guitars, Then again, I mod each and every Strat I buy too... even after careful selection. I've been a professional player for more years than I want to remember at this point, so I'm extremely picky and demanding when it comes to guitars.
    When I have even more time I will get this Wolfgang in proper shape, but have not had the time to do so at this point. So, some very nice things about this guitar... but some irritatingly bad issues also, in my experience.

      Yeah never file the neck. If you don't get that perfectly straight then you are screwed. If you don't have a belt sander you can go to a guitar repair shop and they should let you use theirs. That is what I did on one of my Ibanez guitars. And yes, the parts on the budget EVH are trash, but to be expected a bit at that price point. The scale on the EVH is still 25.5 but EVH was so damn smart he set the neck deeper into the body so it has more of a les paul feel which is brilliant. I wish other manufactures would do that as well. But, the guitar is still a good jumping off place. Replace some of the gear on it and you can turn it into a killer little unit. I honestly don't play mine that much right now. I am getting ready to rip it apart completely and my wife is going to paint a mural on it so it will be down for a bit.

    After having this guitar for a while I have to ask. How do you compare the Mexican vs the Indonesian?

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I had a very bad experience with the mexican one. th-cam.com/video/z34pwEiYmQI/w-d-xo.html. Here is the link to the video. I know people who have them and love them but mine was terrible and the workmanship was miserable. Not really sure how it got out of the Indonesian factory...let alone sweetwater. Either way you will end up changing out some of the components....not as much on the mexican as this one but this one is a lot more comfortable to play if that matters to you.

      I guess you could call it the stealth. It is the satin black finish like the American stealth model.

      The MM's are very cool. I found a purple one at Guitar Center for 3500 but on the front it looked like someone shot it with a 100 BB's. I told them I would give them 2k for it because I would have to have the top refinished. They turned it down and someone bought it the next day. Love those guitars.

    I think that the evh wolfgang standard is one of the best budget guitars that you can get. It punches WAY above its weight. The diffrences between the standard and the special are minute in my opinion. If it wasnt for the fact that the bridge on the standard was lacking then it would be way better than the special in my opinion. That arm contor is a godsend and you don't realise how much its helpful untill its gone. The special dosnt have an arm contor! The only other difference between the standard and the special other than the bridge is a nicer switch and and d-tuna

      It seriously is. I was shocked at how good it was because that was literally the first time I actually sat to play it and it was amazing. The forearm cut, so glad they did that. My USA wolfgang kills my arm after a show and that is such a relief. I honestly do not think I would buy the special after playing this. I really was not expecting that from this little guitar. Thanks my friend.

      Too much is made of the expense of a guitar and if it fits a person is priceless. I have a standard and it's great and I've owned guitars that cost far more but delivered far less. The only wish I have would be a hardtail EVH and that would be perfect

      Yeah it is. I guess that comes with the price point of this guitar. I noticed that right away but I also use a very high gain channel so I do expect some.

      Actually I am changing them both out and it will end up with 2 volumes and probably a sustainiac in the neck position. Doubt I will change the block however on this guitar but they do make a huge difference. And yes.....Ed was the man. At least you didn't call me an idiot this time.

      Mine could have some sub par parts. they are not bad but when compared to the USA there is a vast difference.....as well as $3000.00. Regardless, this little guitar rocks and surprised the hell out of me.
