Thank you to Paul at ShopDap.com, he let me know these brake rotors have been updated a few times from Audi. Possibly because of this very issue. Check out factory brake discs here: www.shopdap.com/4h0-615-301-an-vw-audi.html
Hey Jamie! Have you ever heard of this? On my 06 bmw 325i, the stock pro radio, when I’m listening to music in aux or radio, it randomly changes to CD player. I can’t figure it out. I can change it back or leave it for a moment and it will switch back. And along with that, when I unlock my car, the cd player is doing something, I can hear the noise likes it’s switching disc or something, and the car isn’t even turned over or in accessory mode. Wtf? Lol only solution I can think is just replace the head unit oem or aftermarket. Any suggestions ?
Hi Jamie, excellent video as it has solved my issue with my SQ5. I have exactly the same issue as yours and it also drove my insane trying to find it. Just concerned that if using the same product again by Zimmermann whom make them for Audi I believe will you be replacing them again if the same problem arises? Mine have only been on the car for under a year and they failed! Not to sure if I will go back to the similar product here in Australia, do you know if the issue has been resolved with this rotor ?
@@djcjohns1133 The brake rotors that made noise where factory Audi brake rotors. The fix in this video was Zimmerman rotors. As of today, that noise hasn’t come back. Hope this helps 🤘
What a serious kick in the pants. By far one of the most frustrating things to deal with as a flat rate tech. Love your videos and how you shoot them to show the process/explain stuff. Im an A level Chrysler tech with over 10 years experience. We recently started having to send videos to customers and from the start I’ve spent the time to really show and explain what’s wrong with their vehicle. Customers leave good reviews mentioning my name, I’ve had customers come personally thank me, management has nothing but the best things to say about me, even the owner has recognized me. So thank you for inspiring my video production at work. It’s made selling work for customer safety and upsells so much easier.
Of course, when mechanics are in a hurry to fix our loved ones cars, we get out the parts cannon! "It probably needs one anyway". Nice find, much safer car now.
This reminds me of a nightmare sound issue I had on a customer car when I worked at Subaru. High-pitched whine sound between 40-60mph, thought it was sus, wheels, bearing, etc. Turned out one of the brake lines had gotten bent up just enough to barley rub on the frame and cause that sound, took 3 days just to figure it out.
Creaking noise is a sunroof frame, there is a bulletin to help the noise a bit but if that doesn’t work, needs an entire frame, good luck! Great video as usual
Never in my 20+ years of owning several 100 cars have I ever seen this issue before. I would have had the whole suspension redone, there no human on this planet that would have found that problem.
My wife had a rattle on her Q5 was driving me nuts, finally tracked it down to the sunroof. Fully opened and closed the sunroof and noise has been gone for a week now!
Just dealt with this issue the last couple of days and narrowed it to the passenger front rotor. I found your video after the fact but nice to see that we're not the only ones dealing with this! I actually made some wooden wedges to take the slack out of the disc/hat and verified the noise was gone before replacing the rotors on the customer's S8.
A few decades ago a brake rotor on my dad's Jeep XJ sheared so smoothly where the pressed hat was welded to the cast chinesium that no sounds could be heard when applying the brakes. I've never used those type rotors again as I've heard of more examples of rotors shearing the welds.
I think this is a video many people should watch. They don't realize the seek and find that you guys have to do when trying to find an issue a customer is complaining about. Customers think that because you are a technician you should just know what it is. They don't realize your frustration when you can't find the easy quick answer. It's not like a radiator hose that is leaking which is apparent. Great work.
You are a life saver!! I have been chasing this rattle for at least 6 months!! Had done everything under the sun!! I have been saved, lol. I have a 2015 Audi A8
Hi Jamie, love the video! I was in contact with you around 6 months ago with the same problem here in Australia. Well we put on new set of Zimmerman rotors on and guess what, we are experiencing the same issue again. Quite a grey area with the sellers of this brand of rotor saying they have never seen this issue ever? Well I have experienced it twice now hopefully we can get a warranty claim because to me it is not normal for a rotor the become loose on the hat. I think we will be going after another brand !
That's awesome Jamie. Long time Audi owner long before they became mainstream. My first Audi was an Audi Fox, then a 1984 GT Conpe just to take a trip in time. I like your curious mind and approach to gremlin solving. Keep up the great reviews.
have to comment, you’re the man, love your videos, i can truly sympathize, after many years of being in a european shop, by necessity, one had to become a “master” of rattles, nice work
YES!!! I have! Thank you soooo much! Now I know that stupid rattle. going to show my mechanic this right away! Thanks. This was perfect. I thought it was coming from the strut towers too! I'm so glad I didn't drop the coin for the repair! Awesome!
So cool you found the problem I have an annoying creaking sound when I turn left on an intersection. BMW dealership can’t pinpoint my X5 35d 2014 problem, suspension struts been replaced and front brakes.
That creaking noise your wife mentioned at the end of the video is most likely the sunroof frame. Have replaced about a million of em'. OK maybe not a million but alot of em. 😁
Reminds me of the shaking front-end and steering wheel of my wife’s Murano. For 12 years since almost new her steering wheel would shake when driving between 55-70mph, which covers like 90% of our commute. We spent thousands of dollars on rotations, balancing, alignments, new wheels, new tires, new struts, and much more including all the payments in dead-end diagnostics fees and after 12 years we finally replaced the car because it needed a new catalytic converter that even after market was worth more than the car and the last straw.
Ran in to the phantom noise situation recently. Heard a squeak every time the car jostled. Turns out some kind of filler foam in the b-pillar was rubbing.
Good video, trying to track down a rattle can be a pain, had a rattle in my motorcycle that I couldn't find tried everything, finally one night I looked at the chain guard, found a crack that you couldn't see where bolted onto the bracket LOL
Currently hearing a rattling sound in my Audi Q7 when driving thought it would be because of ball joints going bad but I’m going to check the rotors now.
Those brake rotors are designed so that with heavy braking generating alot of heat, the outer rotor material can expand and contract evenly on those pins reducing chance of distortion/waves.
Hei ... thanks allot ! I do have the same noise and I already changed lower bushes. I was planning to change the entire suspension because that sound gets me crazy. Thanks allot, man !!!
Oh yeah dude. There is a TSB on this. The floating brake rotors. A lot of newer German cars are bringing them. Audi/Porsche it's a top complaint. Sadly, I've seen them rattle right out of the box. The parts department just has them stacked on shelves, which causes unnecessary strain, and can loosen the pins or rivets. Whatever you want to call them.
I had a same type of noice and I tried the same way you did... (I'm happy 'cz I'm not a professional mechanic) Finally one person found the reason.. it was caliper pins...

That’s crazy not something I would’ve guessed. I’m a tech for John Deere so unless the issue is engine related most of our inspections are done visually because well the engine is loud. Im willing to bet that faulty rotor would’ve passed a visual inspection.
That’s what up. Keep up that awsome work. And your wife should always be your best and worst customer. But at the end of the day, she’s the best no matter what…
Had a customer bring back a new van under warranty with a perculiar noise from inside at all times, even when standing outside the van you could here it! We got it in the shop and found a battery powered "Adult Toy" wedged behind the wheel arch. We left it on the dash when he came to collect his vehicle and explained what we had found. He never ever came back to our garage again ☺️

I had my (ex)wife (who was with child, at the time) in the vehicle with me, and it drove me insane, wondering what was going on with the truck/SUV her parents had given us... just remembering that point in time pisses me off. 🤦🤦😑😑
I have a similar issue on my FZR400 motorcycle, when on the brakes and going over a bump it clunks hard, its just the rivets for the floating rotors, its not like your issue though where it happens all the time
Jamie - Great video and thanks for sharing your discovery. I have a 2016 Audi A8L Quattro (64k miles, 3.0T) that has a shock "chirping noise) that's coming from the left rear of the car. I didn't run over a bird or have a bird trapped in there. It's indiscriminate. It's only when I roll over an imperfection in the road grade. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Any ideas? Thanks very much. I subscribed!
At our house, it's me who gets annoyed at tiny rattles or malfunctions in my wife's car, things she's never even registered or considers normal car noises. Noises which I then isolate and fix. And then proceed to badger my wife whether she has noticed the absence of the annoying thing I fixed for her. At which point she, almost imperceptibly, rolls her eyes and says 'oh yes honey, it's so much better, thank you. What would I do without my handyman hubby'.
Thank you to Paul at ShopDap.com, he let me know these brake rotors have been updated a few times from Audi. Possibly because of this very issue. Check out factory brake discs here: www.shopdap.com/4h0-615-301-an-vw-audi.html

It is a two piece just like the e60 rear. They’re riveted. Fascinating story behind that but it does reduce rotation weight obviously.

I didn't run over a bird or have a bird trapped in there. It's indiscriminate. It's only when I roll over an imperfection in the road grade. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Any ideas?
Thanks very much. I subscribed!
When you changed the rotor, did you also change the brake pads? (Inexperienced mechanic, just trynna retain information)
That is an impressive find!
That's exactly what I'm dealing with but with a cobalt rear rotor
That seems to be the dumbest design of a rotor I’ve ever seen, but I’m no engineer
Thank you for this interesting video! I'm getting married soon so I definitely need this for the poor car 😅
In my 40 years of LIFE this is definitely a new one. I'm annoyed just knowing this.
What would I do without my handyman hubby'.
sounds about right LOL
