Thanks for this video. Bought a 2017 q5 at auction that was doing this and shuddering when under acceleration/ load at all speeds- including highway driving. Changed the transfer clutch fluid as per your video and drives perfect now. Thanks!
OMG perfect timing, i have this issue with my B9 2017 Allroad and my mechanic is recommending replacing my drive shaft ($2000 plus labor) I'm going to try this first and report back here. Update: followed step by step and it fixed the issue, been driving a few 100 k since and still all good.
I had the same issue 4 months ago on a 2020 Q5 at around 85k kms. I took it to Audi dealership and they did exactly what you just did, it fixed the problem right away. However, the rumble is back after 4months and i only did 10k kms since then. Audi said that if it comes back they have to change the center differential under warranty. When you search for “quattro rumble” you will find many posts of people complaining about it. It’s unfortunate that Audi doesn’t fix the root cause of it or just add it to the list of service maintenance to be done! Thanks for the video
Appreciate you sharing your experience on this, although the prospect if this problem comes back that soon I'll be a little nervous. How extreme were the symptoms before you decided to bring the car in? I do wonder if there's a point where it's simply too late for a fluid change.
@@FigureItAudi when i took it to Audi dealership, the vibrations were quite noticeable. I have to add that I am in Canada and I only feel it when I am on the summer tires. When on winter tires, i don’t feel it. It is pretty weird! But I want to get it fixed before my extended warranty expires
Thanks for checking in, and while we have you...are you able to shed light on why the security access code is NOT the default 20113 that VCDS prompts to enable basic settings and instead requires the 20103 you detailed in the post?
Yup, keep an eye on it. I think the larger moral of the story is: there's no filter or fluid that shouldn't be changed at some point. I understand why a business decision by Audi would be to leave out a number of fluids from the regular maintenance schedule or simply call them "lifetime" and avoid the necessity to change them under warranty entirely. However, the side effect is obviously that the service becomes "out of sight, out of mind" for all owners, where the work now becomes reactionary instead of preventative. Which is dumb. I know an auto manufacturer would never do this but if there could be a "Things you should really consider on the tail end of your warranty period" section to at least mention the items we all know need attention but are unlikely to cause issues for the first number of years of ownership, it would save a lot of pain.
Great video! Giving me hope again! My 2020 B9.5 A4 has the same issue, starting around 30k miles. I checked the factory equipment code sticker in the trunk, Engine / Trans code is CYMC/RZV TCC. I checked the discussion on Audi forums that Audi started to roll out Ultra system gradually in 2020 for this model. My mechanic told me this is not Quatrro Ultra, should be Torsen. After having the Transmission fluid flushed for 40k service internal, issue still exists.
I'm saying this having not done my homework on your exact car but there would still be fluid to change in your center diff that, at worst, wouldn't hurt to change and see if it has an impact. Changing ATF is good when it feels like the trans is slipping into or oit of gear during auto shifts, choppy acceleration from a stop or noise when stopped in reverse - but the trans was a red herring in your case, I believe. If your feeling those general symptoms I described in the video, it's something else.
Thank you very much for your video, I am a Chinese owner of a 2022 B9.5 A4 allroad. Because the car body vibrated when I stepped on the accelerator to turn or reverse, I went to the Audi dealer in June this year. It was still under warranty, but the Audi dealer was reluctant to replace the oil for me for free. He even lied to me that because it was not a maintenance item, I had to bear the cost of the oil. It was very frustrating. Later, after replacing the oil, the vibration completely disappeared, but now it has only been 5 months and the vibration has appeared a little bit.
Thank you so much. My research skill is not as good as yours. I know there are maintenance schedules for the Torsen & Haldex systems but I could not find anything on the quattro ultra system. At least now I know what to look for.
Perfect timing! I have a 2018 A4 with 6 speed manual, just over 100k km... have been getting the "shuddering" sound from the rea axle... after researching (google) for awhile, I came to the same conclusion - hoping it's the AWD clutch fluid that needs change! Interesting, here in Sudbury ON, the dealer charges $120 (plus HST) for the clutch fluid... so I bought 1 'bottle', but did also order 2 more from FCP. Really appreciate your video, going to do this procedure next weekend, and hopefully the shudder goes away!!!
Hey did you figure out thissue.I also have a b9 a4 6 speed manual. And I'm dealing with a rear rythmic pulsing vibration. I cannot figure out what is causing it.
@@FigureItAudi Yes, it did solve the problem... I followed your procedure except the last part - checking and updating settings (still plan to check them) - thanks again!
@@ollimatikHey I also have a b9 A4 MT and been having a weird shuttering when taking off from 1st. It only happens when taking off from a light. Did you have a similar issue?
Really nice tutorial, the only one that I know of that covers the clutch and the diff for this set up. I'm planning to do the same for my Audi Q5, but I'm unable to find the plugs for the clutch. Do you have an url or maybe a part code that I could use to buy those fill and drain plugs by chance? Thanks in advance!
The part numbers are in the last screen of the TSB images earlier in the video but to be certain, it's always a good idea to refer to ilcats.ru with your make and model specific information against the part diagrams, or just call Audi and get the parts person to double check what it calls for.
Hi, your video is great, I have a Q3 40 tfsi quattro 2019 so not ultra with the noise in the rear when accelerating from standstill with wheels turned, I changed the fluid in the haldex clutch and also in the rear differential the rep said there was no metal in the oil and that the noise is normal and there is nothing wrong, what should I do as I don't think it ahould make this noise, thank you
Is that the only time you feel the vibration - when the vehicle is turning? And any turn, or accelerate and turn? I know it's easy to assume driveline but there are a lot of things that can cause vibrations and to *some* degree, there is truth in the "quattro rumble". For the sake of argument, let's pretend it is somewhere where gears spin against each other: there are differences in a fluids ability to handle shock or extreme pressure. On specific Audi's, I've heard of people running certain Redline fluids that, without it, seems to allow chattering in gearboxes or diffs. OE fluid isn't always THE best option for every component. But with fresh fluids in your car (minus the transmission, sounds like you didn't do that one - but ill say a lack of metal is not a fool proof indicator that something isn't wrong...), something else could be out of balance. Warped rotors, torn axle boot leading to worn CV bearings, wheels out of balance (more of a high speed thing), driveline, subframe or suspension mounts wearing out - the list goes on. Isolate, test, diagnose. Good luck.
@ Only when accelerate from standstill with turned wheels, and the noise/vibration is in the rear (not from gearbox from what I can hear), rep explains that is the strain on the transmission from the fact that wheels are turned, but I say the front wheels are turned not the rear ones; I suspect haldex oil pressure (valve, pump problems, but they say this would appear as am error) or driveshaft mounts (though age of car is 5 yrs and odo 50000km), I checked CV front ams back in a specialized service and they say CVs are ok; only remaining problem would be worn gears in the differential; because I doubt every Quattro makes this noise :/
speaking of leaving items out of the mx schedule...when will they put intake valve cleaning services in the mx schedule for Direct Injected cars? Services are offered by the dealer (of course they are), but the actual service is not in the mx schedule from the manufacturer...negligence or oversight? is it omitted to keep ownership costs "down" in comparison shopping tools??
I don't but I'd estimate IF they are willing to do the service (since, allegedly, some will not acknowledge the efficacy of the service on the symptoms), it should be a few hours plus materials; remember, if they do it per the TSB, there are multiple road tests involved, etc. Give them a call and report back what they say. My guess is [2 hours min @ ~$200/hr] + [2 quarts @ $100/bottle] + [plugs and wildcard Audi factor] = no less than $600 USD.
@@markeee5267 Truthfully, I don't know. Without it I think all that would happen is a service warning could appear on the dash sooner than needed. I realize there's a contradiction between that and the oil being "lifetime" (hence, why would Audi set a value for time-till-service?) but it's a guess. An annoyance, at most.
I refilled the drive oil as you suggested, and the strange noise is gone. I love you, you're awesome!
Glad to hear it. If any noise comes back, let us know here and how many miles passed before it happened.
