Just wanted to let you know that I love the style of your video, it feels really professional but not corporate, there’s still memes and everything, I love it!
Right exactly. This is half my issue with VR actually. It's a lot of fun but even for someone like me who is kinda fit, it's still annoying to turn my gaming experience into a workout. Why would I want to do essentially aerobics and cardio just to play skyrim or minecraft when I can play skyrim or minecraft sitting back in my chair completely relaxed?
The half dive has huge potential for medical VR. Basically using VR as pain relief incombination with local anesthetic for dental or surgical procedures or using it in hospice and bedbound patients to support mental health and brain activity. Almost simular to the whole San Junipero situation but without the life after death part. As someone who is bedbound and already uses VR this way I am super excited to see what they come up with.
"Enabling human activity in its lowest energetic state" (10:38) seems like a very distopian goal. Like, we are already bombarded by information every day, and then we should keep feeding our brain more when it's supposed to be resting? That seems wrong to me The concept is cool tho
At the same time it's a nice goal for people who already don't have a lot of energy. People with disabilities or mental illness might not be able to leave the house or even meet with their friends at times, so a "lower energy" form of interaction would give them some company without being too draining. That being said, of course you can have too much of a good thing.
Sleeping in VR felt really wierd, until I saw people do it all the time in VRC. It's totally normal over there. Heck. Even I do it... It's less about being bombarded with information and more the feeling of a virtual sleepover party. That said, not sure if I want to take the plunge on a headset specifically for that use case.
Not for sleeping, for being able to play your favourite vr games even when you’re too tired to jump around instead of waiting for the next time you’re not exhausted

It seems like with all the trouble Half Dive is going to for full immersion they should make an optional rig to support it, so you can actually stand up and move around, and also attachable to one of the treadmills.
I mean, they have been nailed down. The issue is entirely one of cost, not so much tech. It says a lot that a multi-billion company like Meta is having to investigate entirely new methods and materials - it's not because we *couldn't* make some, it's that we can't make some *at a pricepoint that makes sense* even for big companies that would happily splurge ridiculous amounts of money on having the fanciest tech. Nonetheless because haptic gloves are primarily entertainment focused for purposes of immersion - if the sim-training we have works well enough with the controllers we have, it's hard even for the big boys to justify spending several dozen (or more) times the cost of Index controllers. Unfortunately, I don't think a startup would have the money to try the things big corps like Meta/Google/Apple will be able to either.
The Half Dive looks amazing, actually. I've always thought that if I could just lay down and put a screen in front of me, games could feel way more immersive since I'm not receiving many physical stimulae from my chair or anything, so my senses are mostly in the game.
Been here since you made vids in your attic and I'm finally getting a VR headset, quest 2 thanks for the amazing content and I hope to be here to the end
I would love to use VR gloves along with a omnidirectional treadmill for a even further dive. Like I love it when games use more then just a button input for most things like into the radius for it map and wrist button for it's menu and stormlands also using a similar wrist button system for it's map.
For me, I think when haptic tracked gloves go into full vogue, they'll have to make...virtual controllers. As in, create a virtual version of a controller used to play the game, and use haptic feedback to make the player feel like they're holding controller, and that controller has touch sensitive buttons/joystick- that way if you went into a game that required a controller, a gesture just spawns in the applicable controller- and use this to also get around those games made in mind for certain specific controllers. If a game like Boneworks still requires something for forward movement, or requires a button press, hitting a virtual button a virtual controller makes more sense than a time wasting gesture, and spawning in one in the virtual space makes more sense, and is much more modifiable and timely. If you only need to use controller/button press some of the time, especially, being able to "drop" and call up the controller whenever makes more sense. Just like how VR has taught us that we can pull up as many displays as we want while working, we should also learn that certain physical components can be completely pushed into the virtual space.
One of my problems with having gloves for controllers, they need to be able to fit people with what typically is extra large hands. Preferably would be something that attaches to the tips of your fingers that you calibrate into use. If it's all gloves will have to buy individual gloves for everybody that's going to be using a machine because there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all.
Maybe it could be similar to valve’s knuckle strap but small enough to fit several on each finger. It would be time consuming to swap but precision usually cannot be rushed. Or maybe the actual tech piece could function as an exoskeleton device that attaches to set points on a pair of cheaper gloves. Then you just have 3 sizes of gloves and clamp on the exoskeleton to adjust for different hand sizes. I agree there is no one size fits all, but I think we’ll get pretty close by the end of 2022.
@@cenciende9401 The more something has to stretch, the more it will deform. Either getting stretched so it no longer fits smaller hands or pulling on the electronic parts causing more wear and tear.
Absolutely would love to see a video on HalfDive if you could. VR's already making massive moves in only a few years, this video makes me unbelievably excited for the future!
QOTW: which thing would you like to see advance first? Resolution, FOV, weight/size? personally, I'm happy with the res my Quest2 provides me, but I can't wait for FOV and weight/size to get better!
@@looeegee I understand the controller situation, and I've dealt with worse (first experience in VR was with the Samsung Odyssey plus). I don't like any of the options currently available and I've been trying to find a headset I like and can afford for almost 2 years now, and since the Reverb was $100 off I decided that I can live with the controllers. Worst case scenario is that I truly despise them and buy some base stations and Index controllers to fix it.
I had the Oculus DK1 back in the day and have been hooked since. It's incredible to see how far we have come. This is the future of gaming and productivity! AR and VR are here to stay!
HalfDive looks like it would be phenomenal for people who are paralyzed/bedridden, in hospital, etc, would not be mentally confined to the same room, couple this with advancements made in prosthetics where they have started being able to use brainwaves to move artificial limbs... So the idea would be that they would never need to move while being able to move in VR environments.
The future is arriving! It’s great to see tech companies investing into gloves instead of the traditional “controller” button way. Gloves seem to much fit a VR category, Controllers for consoles. It should’ve planned this way from the very beginning. Additionally, it’s more convenient and realistic to physically gesture to order things whilst, again, physically witness it through virtual reality. If only more tech companies followed this path. Well, glad to see an evolution progress executed to enhance the megapixels of these VR headsets. Only problem to face: it’s expensive.
This is my first time hearing of the Half Dive and I'm super excited for it! They're taking VR back to its basic components and going back to the beginning
Qotw What hardware or software change would you make to the quest 2 if you could. ( With the exception of the obvious removing facebook) For me personally it would be a home screen like a phone you could custom drag apps and quicklaunch shortcuts to it rather then searching for the game you want in your library. Close second is a timer though. I lose track of time so quick XD.
Yes I hate this as well, I hate having to select installed every time so I don't have to filter through my library of everything. I would like a revamp of the whole Quest 2 interface. Something more slick looking and streamlined
I think we are a ways off from haptic gloves at the LEVEL I want them at... but it's tough to know how far away they really are. If Meta is talking about them already, maybe we're closer than I thought. They don't even have to be perfect, they just need to be be comfy and lightning quick.. the haptics themselves can get better over time.
QOTW: Do you plan on eventually making a video based on the progression of VR with important events that have happened chronologically from start to now?
This might be a hot-take, but the quote at 8:17 really had me thinking we're a lot closer to Ordinal Scale type tech rather than Full Dive at the moment. I'm interested to see how tech like the Half-Dive will continue to develop.
Ordinal Scale is a movie which is part of the Sword Art Online franchise. In it, there's a pair of augmented reality glasses called the "Augma" which feature the same brain-linking tech as the Full-Dive headsets, but rather than using it to place the user inside a virtual world, they place the virtual world around the user.
There's a good reason VR in fiction was often depicted as plugging in while lying down or in a pod or similar before actual early VR headsets changed the trend: Motion tracking is interesting and all, but if you want to be able to sky dive in VR, or swim, or play a ninja character that's far more flexible than you really are, we need to go beyond this obsession with motion tracking and cut out the middle-man of the body as much as we can. The Half Dive, or something like it, is the real future of VR, not a side road.
I’ve always wanted to grow up fast, but now with half dive being worked on I’m glad I still have so much time to watch it become a true device. If only we could control it with our minds
3:40 "Convincing" is the perfect word, because facebook wants us to live in a box but have a mansion in there "metaverse". Disliked for shilling for facebook
Regarding the "brain filling in the gaps" being used for haptics, there have been real world examples of that phenomenon sending people to the hospital. The one that I mostly rmember off the top of my head was a guy who got a giant nail stabbed all the way through his work boots on a construction site when he slipped off a ladder. He had to be rushed to the emergency room, but the nail actually hadn't injured him; instead, it had pierced his shoe right in between his toes, but he was still experiencing extreme pain as if it had gone right through his foot. More in line with an actual VR thing, I'm just sad I can't replace the controller for my Rift S after I cracked the ring a few weeks ago. I tried to get a replacement, but it's just listed as "not available."
That half dive tech looking really impressive ngl. Probably five to ten more years to go full dive...maybe...maybe not idk. Technology keeps improving, so I ain't losing hope on this.
Thrill missed a biggie with the Half-Dive. Handicapped. I was at a con July and on a whim went to "Fursuiting for the Visually Impaired" (I have mobility issues not vision issues) but I didn't regret it. Some intense conversations happened, including a brief mention of VR. I tried following up with a person and his professor, but it never went anywhere. But this still holds a glimmer in my mind. Standing in VR for me is nerve-racking, I barely do it for Beat Saber or a dance in VRchat but my hip is always touching something so I have control. The Half-Dive would be perfect for me.
Do a focus 3 and half dive review please! I feel like the half dive is so important for people who can’t physically do VR in a sitting or standing position. Personally, I’m lazy and want this.
The half dive reminds me of an idea for faking fulldive by physically holding a person down and working from there, using some more basic systems to read signals going to limbs in the body and then using that to move the VR body while the real one can't. I can't say for sure but it could trick the brain to focus on the VR body since it's following all the commands unlike the real one that hopefully becomes background noise to the brain while immersed. Like the half dive it could easily support a good rig for the head and skip past the issue of messing with the brain to directly send the visuals.
A thought came to my mind, if you’re laying down how would your mind accept the thought of being upright virtually? If you are stationary would you still get motion sick?
i have a question...I got myself a quest 2 for christmas this year and i have no usb c on my computer. Therefore i would be glad if you can tell us the best alternative link cables for the most used vr headsets.
I wrote a research proposal for haptic gloves that talked about how to achieve all this stuff five years ago. It even explained how to establish the sensation of holding something utilizing proprioception alongside wire feedback and e-stim. The world has actually moved on it slower than I expected.
Voice commands would be a great addition to headsets when haptic gloves become the norm. No need for a menu button when you can just say "headset, open menu". Locomotion would be the greatest barrier as a joystick is still the best method of getting around.
Feels incredible knowing we have been here with VR from its beginning. The future is exciting man.

People are already building haptic gloves and full-body tracking solutions from scratch, building your own full-body exosuit isn't too much of a stretch. I'm going to try my hand at making one once I have the resources available. If everybody can build one, the power will be in their hands.
Just wanted to let you know that I love the style of your video, it feels really professional but not corporate, there’s still memes and everything, I love it!
I love the time we live in right now. This stuff is so advanced and fun. I’ve had a blast with VR excited for the future of VR
It will only get better! Imagine the tech in 10-15 years! What time to be alive.
I'm so glad Facebook is creating all of this technology, so that I can buy similar technology from another company.
😂😂
The news in video feels very exciting and inspiring, makes me interested again in what the future of vr can actually be
Thanks dog u really putting in the legwork and mula to help us get hyped and educated on what’s out there
If I got the half dive it would kind of take away my argument of VR being a “workout” when I don’t own any workout experiences.
@@Voltaic314 that is literally the opposite of what OP was saying
"When i dont have and workout games"?
@@Voltaic314 You would want to workout for well, increased immersion.
@@Voltaic314 No way, I wanna be able to workout while also playing Skyrim. That's what I'm aiming for.
That seems wrong to me
The concept is cool tho
I feel you. I'm enthused by the concepts but also kinda really don't want to sleep in VR
It's no different to people who lay down and watch TV or use their phone.
I’ve wanted an SAO experience since the beginning!! I love that someone is actually going there now!
Would definitely be interested to see you get your hands on a Half Dive, sounds like it could be a clever idea
I really feel like we might actually be on schedule to get a IRL version of SAO really soon, and it might even be released on the same day as SAO was canonically released, November 6th, 2022. Im really excited for the future of VR, and eventually, Full Dive tech!
its so funny how there is a whole comunity with expensive gear that only can really apply on vr chat XD....it blows my mind (i love vrchat tho)
8:33 i think full dive its the correct way in where vr will evolve...and as a person with motion issues...this will be amazing , having the feeling of running and jumping again...and stuff like dat...also i cant stand too much time without feeling pain so , yeah, a lot of ppl will appreciate it
Respect
You could always sit down
@@nekaa7657 some vr games are impossible to play sitting down
Oh jeez, being able to move freely uninhibited by our Fibromyalgia would be amazing
Full dive does seem really exciting for people with disabilities.
I have a friend with EDS(Ehlers-Danlos) and they have a tough time in VR with limited energy and maneuverability. I can’t even imagine how incredible this will be for people with much more limitations.
I've only hit the bell icon on 2 channels, and this is one of them... Loving how much progress vr has made over the last couple years.

Let's go brandon
It seems like with all the trouble Half Dive is going to for full immersion they should make an optional rig to support it, so you can actually stand up and move around, and also attachable to one of the treadmills.
I really think VR gloves are the future and it just seems almost crazy no one has nailed them down yet even with all the startups
Interesting profile picture you've got there sir
@@elderelijah4394 very interesting…
Well, the reason is it's still way too expensive to do well enough.
The Half Dive looks amazing, actually. I've always thought that if I could just lay down and put a screen in front of me, games could feel way more immersive since I'm not receiving many physical stimulae from my chair or anything, so my senses are mostly in the game.
I don't see myself using half-dive. It's kind of sits awkwardly between "traditional" VR and full-dive.
It is called half dive for a reason, we gotta start somewhere
@@Explorerofshadows that... Is a good point.
I would, I already find myself laying down during extended VR sessions because of neck fatigue
Thats why it's half
Uh there absolutely is a way to do one size fits all, stretchable mesh based gloves which conform to the size of your hands.
@@cenciende9401
The more something has to stretch, the more it will deform. Either getting stretched so it no longer fits smaller hands or pulling on the electronic parts causing more wear and tear.
My favorite TH-camr on this platform hands down
Can you imagine playing half life alyx but you can feel everything? That would be insane

Imagine that plus super wide fov, and, omni treadmill😲😲😲💠💠💠

Lol no I couldn't even play it with a haptic vest. Forget feeling everything.
Your editing is really good!
Thank you for working so hard for us no matter what day!
Absolutely would love to see a video on HalfDive if you could. VR's already making massive moves in only a few years, this video makes me unbelievably excited for the future!
QOTW:
which thing would you like to see advance first? Resolution, FOV, weight/size?
personally, I'm happy with the res my Quest2 provides me, but I can't wait for FOV and weight/size to get better!
I’d prefer resolution. I just got my quest and I can’t even read stuff more than a few feet away because of the screen door effect.
for me The Limbs ( your hands and your legs ) able to feel and walk in VR, It's the purpose of VR
I want a cheap VR headset like the Quest 2 but with the resolution and lenses of the Varjo Aero.
Another great video, keep up the great videos!
Damn, we actually have more stuff to transcend our reality into the virtual world
It's cool how it's becoming more tangible
:) Great intro! Got me straight out of bed - subscribed thankyou :D
Just ordered my first VR headset yesterday, can't wait to get my Reverb G2!
The controllers that come with that headset are HORRIBLE! Return it if you can, there are many better alternatives coming next year.
I'm stoked for everything vr. I'd love to see you use the half dive, but just buy whatever interests you most and I'm sure everyone will enjoy
OMG they are doing inflatable gloves!!! I talked about this being a good solution 30 years ago! I can't believe someone is finally doing it!
4:53 has a quick flash of the close-up glove B-roll🔥love your content!
Just when I thought things couldn't get any more terrifying
5:00 what's the name of the music being used here? I've heard it so many times but I never figured out what it is.
( With the exception of the obvious removing facebook)
For me personally it would be a home screen like a phone you could custom drag apps and quicklaunch shortcuts to it rather then searching for the game you want in your library. Close second is a timer though. I lose track of time so quick XD.
I'd make inbuilt full body tracking
Yes I hate this as well, I hate having to select installed every time so I don't have to filter through my library of everything. I would like a revamp of the whole Quest 2 interface. Something more slick looking and streamlined
@@thewolvz4924 They have that on the HMD they showed on connect, with a mirror in front of you it gives you full body tracking.
Love your reporting on VR, thanks for putting out awesome content!
Damn always getting me hyped up thrill! :)
I think you should go for the half dive vr bundle when it's out, it'd seem pretty cool to know your thoughts after seeing it in action

Guys, we're living through a vr revolution now!
gotta hand it to ya! there's something i just can't put my finger on... you really make VR easy to grasp!
QOTW: Do you plan on eventually making a video based on the progression of VR with important events that have happened chronologically from start to now?
definitely interested in seeing you get and test the half dive
QOTW: How far in the future do you think the meta verse really is, and do you think meta will be the biggest player in the game.
thank you for making this video!
This might be a hot-take, but the quote at 8:17 really had me thinking we're a lot closer to Ordinal Scale type tech rather than Full Dive at the moment. I'm interested to see how tech like the Half-Dive will continue to develop.
What do you mean by 'Ordinal Scale type tech'?
Maybe one day I'll upgrade from my trusty CV1...
The HalfDive is very interesting tbh. We’re excited to see that in action!

Imagine future when neuralink and vr lenses will be out. We would be lying on our beds 24/7.
May I ask what is the project you showed at 0:53?
I am building some similar programable pneumatic device.
Get some epoxy like Devcon plastic welder.
Wow! Learned a lot through your channel on new stuff! Thnx!:)

Probably five to ten more years to go full dive...maybe...maybe not idk. Technology keeps improving, so I ain't losing hope on this.
6:01 - Killer Dad joke. Well done.
Now the Half-Dive is cool... but aren't humans already more lazy than ever nowadays? Do we really need to go further instead of trying to get better?

you're crazy. that monitor setup was awesome.
That's the big question
People who move like they're in a marathon in their sleep: "Guess it's the standing up VR headsets for me. :("
Just bought a Quest 2 yesterday and heard the news about the update today, what a great time.
I would love to see you do a review of the Half Dive!
i have a question...I got myself a quest 2 for christmas this year and i have no usb c on my computer. Therefore i would be glad if you can tell us the best alternative link cables for the most used vr headsets.

Really cool stuff as always Thrill. Would love to see a take on the HalfDive.
Please definitely get a half dive when it comes out!
