      @@redstoner897 actually, if you look at component costs, I'm surprised it isn't more. Those displays are $365 EACH. and there's 2 of them. add to that a custom face gasket, 16 different variants for different IPDs, the R&D to build something like this, the custom optics, the SteamVR lighthouse diodes, the custom cable that they had to make (no off the shelf video cable was actually enough for that resolution) the plastics, and the cooling system... I'm surprised it's this cheap.

      Fixed IPD? That's a horrible idea, when comes time to sell it off.. now you need to find a person with the exact same IPD and also rely on the fact that they are still in business selling these custom face interfaces.

    • @beeilve
      @beeilve ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Nobody-Nowhere I imagine any 3rd party company could sell you a replacement face gasket. It's just a piece of foam. If you 3D scan your original they could 3D print a replica, or alter one side of it to match the 3D scan of someone else. Or instead of 3D printing they could cut any material so long as you have a high precision scanned 3D object.

    • @Volker_A4
      @Volker_A4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nobody-Nowhere Just sounds like growing pains. I'm sure a larger company building this could make some extra room for IPD adjustment with more custom components.

    • @ReavoEnd
      @ReavoEnd ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Volker_A4 You've got it backwards. It's way more effort (especially logistics) for the company to NOT have IPD adjustment. Then you have to stock 15 variants, get IPD from the user and match every headset to a same-IPD user... The sacrifice is all for the end user experience. Tens of grams are shaved off the weight thanks to no complex IPD adjustment system, which requires metal rods, gears, and a lot more parts and space.

    I'm surprised that your poll showed such greater interest in clarity than FOV. I've seen other statistics showing that FOV was more favored. But then again, I think those were from having actually shown people examples of both and seeing which was preferred.
    The majority of VR headsets have rotten FOVs. And the trend in newer VR headsets has been toward even narrower (like this one). I think this is taking advantage of people not missing what they've never experienced. Once you've tried a wide FOV VR headset, it's hard to go back. But unfortunately the only option there is Pimax, which the vast majority of people will never have tried.
    I'm maining a Pimax 8KX, and because of that I'm stuck. I'm spoiled on FOV that covers nearly my entire vision. The level of immersion that produces is hard to explain to people who have never experienced it. And also the significant competitive advantage in gaming. But with the VR industry moving toward increasingly narrow FOV headsets like this, there's just nothing I have any interest in upgrading to. 90x93 degrees sucks pretty hard. That's even narrower than the Quest 2.
    Other aspects of this headset sound great, but that tiny FOV. Eh.

    Great video! I am intrigued to try the BSB, however, like you say, you have to be sure you would use it alot. I would mostly use it for sim racing, but I am quite happy with the experience of the PICO 4 for everything else. That is what I now find challenging, as I keep finding that no headset is worth the cost just to get rid of compression artifacts in sim racing. Although small and light is good, I also find the PICO 4 to be ultra comfortable and the weight not to be an issue with a battery head strap and the AMVR facial interface. Thanks again for another good video 👍

      The battery on my set is not on the headset, but attached to my belt.
      It does require a small wired connection ofc, but I can rotate (360 degrees) as much and many times as I like without the cable getting in the way. In HL Alyx for example I don’t use the rotation button at all. I just turn around myself. Much more immersive imho.
      However, there is an extra ‘antenna’ on the headset, which is compared to the Valve pro not bulky, but compared to the Beyond is too bulky I guess. Also, the bandwidth is limited on the Vive pro 2: max 90 hertz instead of 120 hertz (not a problem for me personally, but it will be on todays higher resolution headsets).
      I guess I have to wait a few years longer, which is a ‘ first world problem ‘ ofc.
      Edit: typo’s

    I really think that PCVR headsets can only succeed in attracting a new audience if either they offer an included tracking solution themselves, or if a new tracking solution that is widely available releases. Yeah, maybe some people see this as an upgrade to their full Vive kit but most PCVR users use the Quest nowadays and I don't see those paying the at least 500 dollar bonus price for just the tracking and that is if they have a good PC. I am very skeptical the beyond can be successful even if it didn't have the downside of no resell value, iPhone requirement and low FOV.

      The FOV is about the same as the Quest 2, so at least those users can tell if it's a deal breaker for them before they buy it. But mounting base stations, getting new controllers, and being tethered to a desktop (and paying a lot for all of that)... There's just enough hurdles to make this unapproachable, even though I like the idea.

    On the IPD thing: how does the fixed IPD make it non-resellable?
    Since you can buy a new custom faceplate if you get one secondhand, you could just put the IPD on an eBay listing; like listing used cars with different specs.
    People looking for secondhand ones can then just browse for ones near their own IPD!

    The Beyond is incredible. However, I would hold on for the next gen personally, since there needs to be a leap in technology to make this truly effective. It needs a mini wireless connections hub to make it really useful. By that I mean the next gen Wifi (Wifi 7) and Bluetooth (6? LE) with almost no lag, so it can stream from the phone (assuming phone has powerful enough hardware). It needs at least one tracker for head movements and one camera for some kind of passthrough mode. Other trackers can go on a person's body or on the controllers, and more cameras can also be clipped on to a person's shirt if needed.
    The core premise of Beyond is definitely incredible. The custom face pad is amazing. And I can always keep a cheap 299 USD Meta Quest 2 if I need to show someone else anything in VR. [My IPD is 64, in case you ever decide to sell your Beyond btw 🤓]

    That strange sensation you felt after removing the headset, reminds me of what you get when you've been walking around wearing prosthetics all day.
    I've worn masks and ears molded to a lifecast of my face (like in my profile pic) and you do get used to it being an extension of yourself when it fits so perfectly.
    After wearing those all day for the first time, I would swear I could still feel them on while in bed. A bit like a phantom limb of sorts.
    The sensation is also similar to the tetris effect and it will dissipate about as quickly once the newness wears off for your body and mind.

    I think Big Screen doesn't care at all about the ability to play games on it (why it doesn't come with controllers/base stations). I think Big Screen has MUCH bigger plans for this headset. I believe they built this headset to close down Regal and AMC theaters and become the new place Hollywood releases movies. I know many of you doubt this, but is it really that hard to believe? Look at what this company is and what they've chosen to concentrate on designing the headset for: color accuracy, comfort, super light, easy to strap to your head, and small enough to easily eat popcorn and snacks while wearing it. This is a headset even grandma can put on without help. And for those of you who've never used the Big Screen app on Oculus Rift, you can choose which theater you want to be in. You can be in a huge IMAX size theater, an old 80's retro theater, drive-in theater, in your million dollar apartment, etc.
    The headset only has two things they need to work out before they can accomplish this: the price (which will come down later) and the glare. All headsets have this issue where if there's a bright spot in the middle and darkness around it, you will get glare on the lenses (basically, any movie theater). So they have to keep the movie theater relatively lite-up during the movie to minimize it. It's still a massive distraction and they'll have to get this ironed out before overthrowing cinemas.

I think this headset is a pretty small investment for anyone who is already deep into the PC/Lighthouse VR scene, cause all you really need is the headset, you already have everything else on hand. If you 'only' manage to double your VR usage (due to increased comfort), you unlock a lot of value out of what you have already spent. To say nothing of the just better experience you're having while you do that.

    Seems like the by product of profit and not user experience. Wouldn't auto IPD and eye tracking solve this?
    miniaturize the tech instead of artificially creating value from a feature that will soon be obsolescenced by technology improvements .

    What are your thoughts on the Beyond and the Varjo Aero? The Cas and Chary Varjo Aero video was one that made me confident in purchasing one.
    I'm a daily Varjo Aero user that is still blown away by it after 7 months of owning one and 700ish hours later. It truly is nearly perfect for my wants and needs. But I must say the Beyond has caught my eye. I think the customized facial interface is something all HMD's should offer (a company needs to jump on this idea for all HMD's) and the specified IPD is special. But the micro OLED and weighing next to nothing seems special. I'd love to hear what somebody thinks between the Aero and Beyond.

    I have it pre ordered but am on the fence about if I'll get this or the pimax crystal. My current headset is a vive pro 2. I seriously had to work to get this thing "somewhat" comfortable as it's very front heavy in a way that wasn't true for the original vive so comfort is a high priority in my next piece. The advantage here is that it's comfortable and an easy fit into my current setup. It's also six hundred dollars less than the crystal but misses a lot of extra features that thing has. Biggest two things that I know of is the the better lenses that don't glare and the fov. Add in eye tracking and the potential for foviated rendering along with inbuilt off ear audio for pre orders and you have something good. Then again, I'll have to buy a lighthouse tracker to add to the price as I do prefer outside in tracking. I do have a sneaking suspicion that the beyond will come out on top in just use though as it looks that much easier to just pop on so I am torn but that's good for the industry so I guess win win? I'd love to see more direct comparisons though.

    To maximise appeal & sales they need to: 1. Allow people to order multiple different face fitting foam moulds per headset, which can be swapped back and forth, to allow a couple with different shaped faces to share a headset, wearing contact lenses if they have different eyes, rather than have personal prescriptions in the headset, unless they don't WANT to share.
    2. If they can't get it in the first release, they should aim for a refresh upgraded version which maintains all the other hardware specifications, but ups the refreshrate to 120Hz/FPS (for solid looking images that reduces nausea) and 120 degrees field of view. Obviously it will be down to the power of the individual PC used with it to make full use of these features, but high-end hardware (RTX4090 paired with AMD 7950X3D, etc) paired with Unreal Engine 5 are just about ready for TRULY realistic immersion, and just needs pairing with a VR headset that can display it.
    3. They should reach out to VR haptic glove manufacturers, allowing controls by, for example, touching different fingertips to your thumb tip without needing physical buttons or separate controllers. The next step up is artificial physical resistance built onto the gloves so you can FEEL items you pick up. This technology already exists, it just needs unifying and standardising.

      @Common Ground A robust solution that the entire industry is abandoning as fast as they possibly can. Customers don't want to spend all that extra on basestations, it's terrible for enterprise implementations outside of arcades, and the tech in them is owned by Valve, HTC can't even make basestations anymore, they were breaking the law and had to stop making them. HTC is still producing 1.0 bases, and yes the tech was made by valve (i mean the whole og htc vive was made by valve), but htc 100% have the rights to produces and sell it.
      and while it was valve that was producing 2.0, HTC had right to sell them
      and now Valve recently delegated their production of 2.0 bases to HTC completely. so i have no idea what you talking about x)
      Its still the most precise trackinhg tech, and basically a must have for anything professional (i mean steamvr tracking is used by alot of little to medium professional company that for exepemple cannot afford 100k motion tracking tech or whatnot). used alot in amateur filming and all, as yea it actually cost nothing for prosumer grade of tracking
      and as of today camera tracking *is* broken, its imprecise and very limited, while yes it is a cost mpri for the consumer, the best would be to reduce further their cost if you want the best experience in the end, base stations are thi way to go in terms of reliability and precision. without forgetting if you want trackers for your body or worst others object in your playspace. as of now, we dont have any teck to hav tha much precision, and with no drift, than external base.

Some studies have recently shown that motor control isn't actually stored in the brain but the nervous system close to the part of functionality. That means full dive VR wouldn't just need a brain stem connection, it'd need links all over the body. We'd basically have to be full cyborgs.
