@@AmazinglyChina FYI - When I visited the Soviet Union in 1988, I observed this “Russian Architecture” up close and personal. What I learned was the architects were European and the workers were peasants. For example, St. Isaac’s Cathedral in Leningrad (St. Petersburg now) was built by a French architect (and completed by his son). If I remember correctly, some 200 peasants lost their lives during the 40 years of it’s construction. The walls inside looked like they were covered with frescoes but, when you got very close, you could see they were actually stone mosaics! Fantastic! Similar circumstances surrounded the building of the Winter Palace, the Summer Palace (Peterhof) and every other “beautiful” building I saw. Even the grand hotel I stayed at in Moscow was built by an Italian architect! But then I saw buildings built by Soviet architects; the work was sloppy, nothing fit and, if the concrete sloughed off, it was left that way. Very poor quality construction. I watched some of the construction process of a nuclear power plant (should be of the highest quality). The same principles and techniques applied. I was appalled that women seemed to dominate the menial labor (concrete pouring, steel working, welding and the like) while the men were generally in supervisory positions. That was different from the labor force that built St. Isaacs. Thankfully, the Soviet Union died and a flower bloomed in it’s place! From what I have seen of Russian architecture today, it rivals our own in the US.

I only recently stumbled onto your channel, but it is so delightful. I'm fascinated with Russia, and your videos offer such a wonderful, intimate glimpse into everyday Russia. Your videos about Saint Petersburg, Vyborg, Sochi, etc have fueled my desire to visit, and have helped with my dilemma where to visit. I was always daunted by the size of Russia. There's so much to see! I can only conclude that it can't be seen, adequately, in one 3-4 week span. Time is scarce, but I look forward to spending many months in Russia, exploring your beautiful country. I know enough Russian to get into trouble (and hopefully out again).

I think both Xmas markets are equally beautiful. They each have a different charm and bustle. I’m biased, as I lived in St Pete’s. But always loved visiting Moscow! Both city's are great. But if I had to pick one city it would be St. Petersburg. For me it is more about how the city feels. I have lived and worked most of my life in forests. Top three city's in Russia if I had to pick would be St. Petersburg, Moscow and Vladivostok. This is from a outsiders view. I would have to spend time in the city's and really get to know them.
