    Hey Maria. I'm going to give you the game changer. Cover the area of the pad with masking tape. Then trace with a sharpie. Remove the tape. Put it on the pad wrap and cut. No bs tracing paper. Consider this tip partial payment for the butterfly challenge.

      I use the blue painters tape too but before I cut the skin I put the tape on cereal box cardboard and cut the shape from the cardboard. Makes it more sturdier to trace onto the skin at that point and then you can save the cardboard template for later use

    Excuse the long post, but I've done this multiple times on my son's pads and gloves as he went from one team to another over the years since PeeWee. Just FORGET THE TRACING PAPER. it's flimsy and doesn't follow curves well. Your secret weapon is MASKING TAPE. Get both wide and narrow rolls depending on the shapes you'll need. Apply the masking tape to the area you want to cover, overlapping the edges. Now trace the borders onto the tape. Peel the tape off carefully and apply it directly to the surface of the pad wrap. Now you have an outline that won't shift around.
    Cut around the edges, but leave just a little extra. Now fit the piece to where you will eventually apply it without removing the backing. You can use the tape to mark where you need to trim more. Keep fitting and trimming patiently. If you are going to the edge of a glove or pad, leave a "tail" that you can trim off last so you don't come up short.
    The other advantage to this method is that you can make location marks on the tape to line the pad wrap up exactly as you apply it, especially useful for long strips or curves. Stick some tape on the pad itself to make a corresponding mark, or use a landmark like a seam to line it up. This way you can also start applying from the middle of the wrap. I make a careful slice there just in the backing paper and bend the two ends back. You can now smooth it from the middle towards each end, pulling the backing off from underneath and keeping it lined up with the marks you made. This way it won't turn out crooked or too short on one end. Lastly, if you can make it just a touch wider so that you can just tuck the edge under a seam or into a fold, it will help keep the edge from lifting. I use a small spoon or dull butter knife.
    Pro tip: need to apply the wrap where there are those thick nylon stitches above the surface? Mark those on the tape too. Double check the location when fitting the piece, then punch a small hole at each end and make a slice between them, like a small dumbbell shape. When you put on the wrap the holes will correspond to where the stitches go into the pad, and you can tuck the little flaps underneath so the thread sits on top of your wrap job.
    Smooth it all down really well, then carefully peel off the masking tape once you are done rubbing it. Hit it with the hairdryer and smooth again while you are warming it, running the back of that little spoon around those edges to seal them, then let the pads sit for at least a day for the adhesive to set.
    I've had the wrap jobs routinely last for 60+ game seasons of high level travel and prep school hockey in addition to summer tournaments and goalie training. For the most durable result keep it simple and follow the natural design of the pad sections, since trying to cover over multiple seams and raised sections is possible but tends to come loose easily.
    My son is now playing college hockey and using custom gear, so I'm now out of a job. But it was a lot more fun to sit around and create our own designs, and I always felt like I was able to stick a few extra saves on his gear. Feel good, play good!

    • @gregsmith7818
      @gregsmith7818 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@laflammechristophe4548 I've used both brands depending on availability. As I recall one might have been a little thinner and smoother (I think the Padskinz, but not certain) however I didn't run into any issues with adhesion or durability that I remember. Sometimes when you peel off a section after a long time the vinyl layer wants to come off leaving behind what's is essentially clear double sided tape. But if you pay attention you can catch that early and peel them both off together. Warming the area with a hair dryer will help soften the adhesive.
      There are often some areas with a little gummy residue especially along the edges, but you can either rub them off with your finger into a little ball, or sometimes just a light touch with a little bit of remover like Goo Gone will clean it up. Just don't scrub the surface with it, and rinse the area afterwards.
      You can also make simple logos

    I have found to get better durability and adhesion, I clean the area that wrap is going on with a bit of alcohol then wipe off with a wet rag. Then I "sand" that surface with a magic eraser (can be bought as generic bulk sponges online). The magic eraser very slightly etches the surface, so slight you can't visually see it, but just a little extra for the adhesive to hang onto. Then wipe that off with a wet rag again and then a dry clean rag. Also if you can pick an area to wrap that is "recessed", meaning not the very last layer of jenpro that was sewn on then you can hide or tuck in your edge of pad wrap a bit and this will help with it peeling off. You can use something dull like a butter knife to help tuck it in next to a layer that is protruding. In time it will start to come loose anywhere there is an exposed edge. I have started trying to reattach loose wrap with clear acrylic silicone but I don't know the long term durability of that yet.

    Every tutorial I have watched seems to be produced by some big corporation and all the tools are handy and everything is bang bang 1 - 2 - 3 done perfectly. Yet when I do it, it never works out this way, I spend 25 minutes running around the house looking for a tool or tape. I absolutely loved it when you didn't have enough room on the table and just threw stuff on the floor to get it out of the way. Because that is how I do it. Most of the time clean up takes longer than building whatever project I am on.

    Keeping wraps of any type as an accent only is smart. Doesn't draw too much attention to itself, and it's easier to keep it clean. Also, would recommend painter's tape vs tracing paper. 3M 2080 automotive wrap is also a lot cheaper, and you can hit it with a magic eraser to reduce the shine.
