hi, great video. it is 3 years old when I watched. so you may have already figured out that the cable housing on the deck was not installed correctly. the way you installed it, the cable can just slide up out of the bracket. the plastic piece on the end of the housing should be in the bracket in the horizontal position. you slid it in vertically. It is made to slide into the bracket in the direction of the cable. not down from the top. the opening is for the cable to fit through, not for the housing. but otherwise a great video. some day my videos may be this good.
We have an ancient 2008 Yard Machine the cable broke on. A 62 yr old grandma was out there trying to replace via another video with no luck. YOUR video saved the day. It is clear, precise, and so easy to follow. Excellent job! Thank you.
One of the clearest instruction videos I've ever seen on TH-cam. You are very very clear in your communication and your video quality is excellent. It's really great to experience this video presented by somebody who really knows what they're doing. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for the nice feedback. Glad you liked the video. I try to make sure I capture everything I think I would need to get the job done. Thanks again!
Within minutes of watching your video I knew what to do. Excellent! Just waiting on the one day Amazon cable delivery. I went with a cable with better reviews for $3 more cause I want it one and done! Thanks 👍
I agree with the comment preceding this. The video was perfect. From demonstrating the problem, to viewing what caused the problem, by tracing the cable from where it broke to the mower deck. Demonstrating the the need to measure the cable for correct size, attachments, clips, washer placements, cautions in running the cable to avoid mistakes. A great video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the thorough video. This was perfect. My husband is currently deployed for US military duty and he always fixes this. This time I did, thanks to you. 🙏🏼🇺🇸
Thanks James!! It was very straight forward. Mine was slightly different but just repeated what you show in the video. Watching your video probably saved whole a lot of time!!
Thanks ... This same cable broke today on my tractor. Part on order. I dropped the deck to clean and maintain and will replace all the drive belts. Good video explains the job very well. Thanks.
I actually just came across this channel today. It's already proven incredibly useful to me with just this one video. I will be watching more! And I've subscribed too!
Great job. I lost the retention spring while removing the deck from the mower and had no idea what was missing. I finally discovered the problem, and your instructions are a big help in reassembly. Thanks.
Thanks for the video explained a lot... The keeper for the cable had me going nuts... Trying to figure how it went back on... But you showed me the trick with that little push... Got it fixed today... Again many thanks...
Man this was an excellent video, great camera work and you explained very well what you did. This is a video that I needed to see because I'm working on a Troy-Bilt Pony deck tomorrow, keep up the great work!
Excellent video, 3 years after you made it and I am ordering the cable today. I tried to find the cable path myself but never thought of looking under the battery. Duh. I couldn't figure out where the hookup was on the handle. Thanks to your thorough explanation and amazing camera skills I should be able to fix this no problem. My 2007 Troy Bilt Pony will be mowing again in 2 days. BTW I knee jerk ordered new belts before I watched your video but after 16 years it might be time to replace them anyway 🙂
Fantastic good simple explanation. The mower is a mystery and we are trying to figure out how to work it because my friend was really the only one who knew it however he passed so his boys have to learn about it.RIP Bryan Manning
Awesome! I am a mechanical idiot. I followed your directions and it worked. Now it was tough getting some of the stuff off but i had it done in under a hour. My mower would of been in a shop for a month and I would be pushing almost two acres of land. Thank you! Plus you saved me money I can not afford to loose.
I’m with you! Guy who sold me used mower won’t return my calls. It felt like a simple fix but no one available to hire. Yeah maybe we idiots can do this small job ourselves
I bought a used a mover yesterday, went to use it and this cable broke the second time I engaged the blades. Thanks for the video, hopefully Amazon will deliver mine tomorrow and I can get to mowing
Hey! Great video! The bungie cable idea worked perfectly! I have a newer model, so a little difference on mine. But this video saved me a ton of money...only cost me $15 for the part. Thank you so much!
thanks so much, you made it look easy! I can not get that spring to hook back up#@! great job filming it. my mower is a little older and the cable hooks up differently but still helped me out!
Thanks for the video, the routing of the cable was wrong on the mower that I have. Somebody had run it under the body and in a danger zone. All the action happens down there! They had that defenseless little cable in a bad neighborhood! 😅 Your father in law was a good helper for you. I believe he caught the fact that you put the cable going (over) the belt 😂. Good teamwork guys. Again, thanks for the information. Second hand mowers can be a nightmare.
Thanks man just got it up and going for season, battery dies go get new battery, now cable let go. My last mower was a simple belt. Anyhow great helpful video
11-3-2022….Helped me greatly on my Troy-bilt work Horse Xp built year 2012. Had to replace the engagement lever, cable, 1 break pad, and the deck belt. 🫵🏻 Your video gave lots of pointers and thanks for the explanations. 👏👏👏👍🏻✅ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I've already got the deck out since I just changed deck belt - should I still go down under the battery? - never done anything like this and so proud I even got the deck down lol!!
You have to go under the battery if you’re replacing the cable…. You could also check the drive belt and the transmission belt while you’re in there! Keep up the great work, you don’t know unless you try!
Thank you sir,.sweetwater Tennessee,my issue is the plastic replacement part, seems wider than the old piece, hard to fit back in with paint on the metal, plus my cable is different
My Mini-Rider 24" has the lever end outside the body and the blade end never had the plastic washer and metal clip...it has a long spring which is aggravating to install. The cable isn't actually broken but it soon will need replacing and I've got that identical cable so many thanks....I can properly install it now. There are only 3 clips holding the deck in place and not enough room to unclip the spring so dropping it takes 5 minutes and makes any repair possible
Yes I got the same mower the cable for discharge is in the right place but it locked up don't know how to free it to unlock the disengage when you crank it belts are turning
I have a White model LT-542H, setup looks identical to yours. The problem I'm having is that there is too much tension on the PTO cable with it disengaged. So the brake pads are not making contact with the pulleys and the blades spin all the time even when not engaged. When I manually pull the lever with the break pad towards the pulley, I see it stretching the spring on the cable, and it won't even let me force it far enough for the brake pad to make contact. The spring on the cable is in the correct hole in the lever on the deck labeled 42" which is what I have. There doesn't seem to be any tension adjustment at the lever end. Just wondering if you have ever seen that problem before and have any suggestions. Thanks
That sounds like you don't have enough throttle or something is binding up with the belt above the deck. Really hard to tell without seeing it myself. Good luck!
I have a 2004-2005 Troy built bronco. The PTO engagement cable lever is by the steering wheel. I can not get the part number cable showing in the manual to work. It is just like the one you had in the video. Can you help me with this problem?
I have the same mower, after having it several years, the blade engagement cable broke at the end, like the one in this video, I replaced it and everything worked fine for several weeks, I have now replaced it 4 times because it keeps breaking in the same place, nothing looks out of place in that area, no binding anywhere, what keeps causing it to break, any ideas???
Sorry I am really not sure. I would check to see if something sharp is rubbing during the operation of the cable. That is where i would start. Good luck!
@@HowToWithJames no, nothing sharp near the area where it breaks, it is the very end of cable where it attaches to lever. It is the little lead/metal piece that breaks not the steal cable itself.
👏👏 Bravo my guy. Seriously hats fucking off! No sarcasm 🍻🍻 I watched you do it one handed. Went out back and struggle busted for a solid 30 min on the bungie cord. Broke the whole ass bolt going to the blade guard attaching the pulley. 10/10 Fucked it.... again not your fault I wouldn't even of eventually get it off and no worries the bolt is getting replaced and most likely welded in place.
Hello, it should not be that difficult. You can try to spray silicon spray or w40 on the metal part of the cable and lever. After spraying work the lever back and forth several times and it should get better.

Looking at my cable I understand what you mean. The end pokes through and the oval washer turns 90° to lock it in. Hadn't noticed that so thank you.
Dude my mower just broke this part today, you are a lifesaver. Thank you so much for making this video!
We have an ancient 2008 Yard Machine the cable broke on. A 62 yr old grandma was out there trying to replace via another video with no luck. YOUR video saved the day. It is clear, precise, and so easy to follow. Excellent job! Thank you.
I agree with tracyb433
I have that same 2008 yard machine! Lol 😂 Don’t look forward to this repair- but it was an excellent video!
Thank you!! I think with your video, I can fix this myself!
Is it a yard machine 742 RL by chance? I have a similar issue
I do repair work and I go to there home if needed
Try to help the older folks

I agree,, very clear and simple advice on how to change that cable.. helped me immensely

Thanks for the how-to. Mine broke last week and a new one is on the way. Glad the grass stopped growing for awhile.

How do I fix the blades from engaging
Not the cable the deck is right the front rod adjustment I call it is right I don't know why it won't release

Have a craftman riding lawnmomer with manual lever when move the lever belts tighting up but nothing
Seems like you have a lot more space between your deck and the mower than I do! I have to drop the deck to access everything. And it's still tight!

How do you repair the engage handle mine snapped off

at 8:26 that plastic piece just sits into the metal mounted clip. Mine is too tight, Should I try and stretch out the spring or something?
Yes I got the same mower the cable for discharge is in the right place but it locked up don't know how to free it to unlock the disengage when you crank it belts are turning

Will the blades stay stuck on if your PTO cable breaks?

Mine wants to cut off when I try to engage my blades. Would the cable have something to do with this? It's connected under the seat for security.

I think you are asking me for a link to the same cable I used in the video. The link for that cable is in the video description.
I one question what size is the bigger cable
What’s the piece/bracket called that the spring hooked into? Where the circle is my steel broke off and I need a new one.
Thank You! Seems to me like we need customer friendly engineers. Maybe they could build them with repairs in-mind? 🤷♂️😂
So what do I do to disengage them

it takes a Tarzan to push my pto lever down, have a Yardworks circa 2015-- is it supposed to be that difficult? Is there a way to make it easier?

I still can't get the hook on the spring to come off
Do you have a problem like keeps happening to me? The lever under neath connection keeps popping out?
