  • An analysis of the themes and letitmotifs of the Lord of the Rings - The Complete Recordings; composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore. The videos stay true to how the tunes are presented in The Complete Recordings, so all scenes with no or altered music are omitted.
IMPORTANT: The featured sample notations are not necessarily identical (in key, form or time signature) to the relevant music in the tracks. They exist to give a visual cue for the themes, not to be taken literally for every iteration of the theme.
Quotes mostly taken from The Annotated Score and The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films by Doug Adams
A big thank you to A Magpie’s Nest, and the mysterious transcriber M.W., without either these videos might never have been made.
I am not affiliated with Middle-earth Enterprises, the Tolkien Estate, New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers, WingNut Films, Doug Adams or Howard Shore.
All copyrights and trademarks for the books, films, and soundtrack music and lyrics are held by their respective owners.

Of all the channels I've discovered the past few years, yours is by far my most delightfully wonderful and surprising find. It scratched an itch I never knew I had. I appreciate the loads of work you've put into analysis and editing these videos. It's been a lot of fun watching this journey play out. Congrats on the 1K! You've earned it.

Thanks so much for sticking with me through all this. As someone with a frustrating tendency to leave projects unfinished, it's crazy to see a project 5 years in the making actually reaching its end, and you guys have been a huge part of it.

    Well...I'm back.
And with that quote, I think now might be a good time to share a fun fact I've been waiting to share: I met Sean Astin when I was in high school when he came to talk to us about his experience filming Rudy. His daughter (who plays Elanor in this film) enrolled at my high school two years later, and I got to know her a little.

I didn't cry when Frodo and Sam realized they were going to die on Mount Doom. I didn't cry when Aragorn said "For Frodo." I didn't cry when the Fellowship was reunited, when everyone bowed to the hobbits, or during the Grey Havens scene. But ever since my 2010 back-to-back viewing of the extended editions this final scene (though only during complete trilogy viewings) has reduced me to ugly crying. The only scene in a movie or show to have gotten me that emotional and I strongly suspect the only one that ever will. It builds as it goes. Sam returning to his home and seeing his family, Frodo's closing words, the reflective, final tone of the composition, "I'm back," the final shot of the closed hobbit hole door, and most importantly, Sir Galway's beautiful performance on the whistle. Such a simple scene but I'm a total wreck afterward. It's such a perfect end scene to the trilogy.

Congrats on 1k!! Also I just love how simple this ending is.
With that said, (I know it ain’t the Q&A yet but) do you prefer the film version, or the rarities archive version with the Fellowship statement at the close? I think I’m glad they left it out in the film version, but it’s a cool addition to listen to later

A great track for the day I get baptized. Howard Shore is a genius.

This theme is fitting for Sam. His steadfast and loyal nature.
Though if I'm honest, I feel a bit sad hearing this. Knowing that it signifies a certain rebirth of shire, and primarily a new chapter in Sam's life without frodo.
Also when I compare it to the very first shire motif, heard in the beginning of FOTR, some part of me is reluctant to welcome the future. I feel as if there is less of a childish innocence (bound to happen after everything) an I am not prepared to face it

It's bitter-sweet, to realize how both you and the world has grown and changed. You can never go back, no matter how much you may want to, but deep within you know that this is exactly how it should be.

    For Q&A.
Would you say that the idea of all things end, and only the memory remains, is inherently part of the score??
How would you exemplify it to make it look obvious?
