3.52 Days of the Ring | LotR Score Analysis

  • An analysis of the themes and letitmotifs of the Lord of the Rings - The Complete Recordings; composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore. The videos stay true to how the tunes are presented in The Complete Recordings, so all scenes with no or altered music are omitted.
    IMPORTANT: The featured sample notations are not necessarily identical (in key, form or time signature) to the relevant music in the tracks. They exist to give a visual cue for the themes, not to be taken literally for every iteration of the theme.
    Quotes mostly taken from The Annotated Score and The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films by Doug Adams
    A big thank you to A Magpie’s Nest, and the mysterious transcriber M.W., without either these videos might never have been made.
    I am not affiliated with Middle-earth Enterprises, the Tolkien Estate, New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers, WingNut Films, Doug Adams or Howard Shore.

    What a wonderful and moving culmination of this monumental work on your part. In the spirit of Treebeard, I feel like I could take a long time saying all that's worth saying. But this is a comment on TH-cam. So I'll just say, I'm so proud of and happy with what you've done. Thanks for carrying forth the work, my friend-in-Tolkien. Warm regards, Magpie.

      So you are the famed Magpie! Pleased and honoured to meet the one who opened a new door into the Lord of the Rings!

    This was the most brilliant way to end the film, writing a song and a score that invite the audience to reflect not only on the journey of the characters but also their own personal journeys in experiencing The Lord of the Rings. It's as if we were all part of the Fellowship collectively. The road goes ever on and on...

    For Q&A:
    Which non-musical moments from the films do you love the most? And, which characters do you like the most?

    I found your channel just in time to see the last few tracks come out. I have yet to watch all your videos but I am looking forward to it!! What an incredible piece of work. Ten year old me looking up elvish lyrics on old fansites would hardly be able to believe it! Even in the handful of these I have seen, you've pointed out some connections that have made me tear up, that--even though I know probably almost the whole soundtrack by heart--I had never guessed at. Thank you and well done :,)

    This will be a treasure for all the LotR fans to revisit again and again. What an achievement. Congrats!
    For the Q&A: LotR is often described as being operatic, where the audial and the visual are in harmony. Which scene in the films best synthesizes music and drama on the screen?

    Congratulations on finishing this monumental task! Though it unfortunately doesn't get many views, what you've done is of immense value and as a composer myself, the study of these scores is something I've always been interested in and now has helped me to grow and expand my ideas on many occasions, so, many thanks for what you've done! I don't typically comment but I've been around for a while and I can say I'm quite proud! It's been a ride! A shame it's over but I'm excited for your future videos 😁 well done.
    Edit: forgot you still had bilbo's song, oh well 😅

    RotK is I believe the only movie I actually watch the credits of, I love "Into the West" I'm an artist so I look at Lee's and Howe's sketches in the background. Honestly, if a movie makes you want to watch the end credits... It's a fricking achievement

    When first I heard that particular song, I certainly liked it, but not more so than the others (my favourite was "Gollum's Song" at the time, which I found to be much more chilling and "accurate" somehow).
    But one day I (finally !) got to see all three movies (extended editions, as a matter of fact) all in a row, in one viewing. And I don't exactly know why, but it hit me how much on point the song was, and how fitting it is as a conclusion for the entire story. To this day, I can't watch one movie without watching the others, and I have the same feeling of melancholy hearing this song, everytime.

    A detail I just realised after reading Magpie's article on "Heartbeat for the Shire": you can hear it at 4:00 when the Grey Havens theme is sung again.

    Qs: -- what other score composers or film scores are you most fond of. -- Bear McCreary has reportedly been attached (along with Shore) on the upcoming Amazon LOTR series. Are you familiar with his work. If so, any thoughts on it. (fwiw: I adore his work and he is very heavy on themes/motifs). -- what was the most interesting, meaningful, and/or unexpected thing that grew out of your project for you. For example, a skill or new knowledge or personal epiphany. -- what was your joy to frustration ratio with the project (said with a chuckle... I know there had to have been moments when you wondered 'what did I get myself into!') -- do you have another project (of any kind) that you are considering pursuing for the future.

    For the Q&A; How did you come up with the name ‘Monoverantus’?

  • @simbelmyne7767
    @simbelmyne7767 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I absolutely appreciate the "unofficial information" and I agree. I think insights from fans can be just as valuable.
    Speaking of which, I wondered if you had any thoughts or information on "Use Well The Days"? It is such a beautiful hidden gem. I know it takes snatches of verse from the books, and almost certainly could be said to be from Frodo's perspective based on the lyrics. Like how "Into The West" contains the Grey Havens Theme I wonder if you see any such connections in Use Well The Days?
    Any musings from you on that song would be welcome :) I so rarely hear anyone talk about it and it's a lovely piece that deserves more love, imo.

      He is. He commented about that on a previous analysis video. Although, it may be different in footage, considering that there is none left to use at the end. (The track is not used to end the film.)

    • @user-hw4qx9ij4c
      @user-hw4qx9ij4c 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@derekwu9123 Should it have footage at all? When last I listened to it, it occured to me what a greap coup Howard Shore had accomplished, whereby his entire cycle culminates in a piece of music for which we have no associations with the drama: it ends in "absolute" music; and its all the more noteworthy for having been followed by other music we haven't heard before, like the Wagnerian arppeggios and, in the actual experience of watching the movie, even Asea Aranion: they act as palette cleansers so that we truly hear Bilbo's Song as a piece of absolute music, constructed off of the motives associated with the Shire.
