My Grandfather was born in Riga Latvia. When I was a young child, my mother used to speak Latvian with her parents when they came to visit us. They're all gone now .. unfortunately, I never spoke a word of Latvian. This music brought tears to my eyes .. not sure why, but it is indeed beautiful :-)
KC9KEP you should try learning the language, there might be a lack of recourses but learning a second language brings many advantages beyond communicating, especially if grammar varies from much from English, and it's clear you have some connection to your heritage.
You should visit. I did a few years back and got to see Ligo Song Festival, experience Summer Solstice and my birthday. Being surrounded by the language brought back my upbringing.

This was the only time they sang this song in latvian song festival. I really hoped it will be in this years program, but its not. Doesnt matter if the song is relatively young, because this is what the song festival is about, being together and being able to observe one another. Im just really sad they didnt even consider this song as beautiful and powerful after 2013.
This is so cool. I was not aware how much the paganism might be still present in Latvian culture. In Slovak folklore you find just a tiny pieces of it hidden here and there, but this is am openly frieking pagan hymn. Although I am Christian myself, I feel we should protect and value our pagan heritage.

I have visited Riga, in December of 2019. Christmas Market and just a city break. I'm from Romania, but live in Ireland and became to know a lot of Latvian people here. On my visit to Riga, one evening I just happen to think "I wonder what some authentic folk music sounds in Latvia" This is the first song I've found and it went straight to my heart. She would not have known this arrangement, it's new. If you can spare the time and the effort, there are now good online sources for learning Latvian. Also, the local Latvian consulate should be able to tell you where to find teachers.
We have many Midsummer folksongs like this, that you sing during Midsummer/Jāņi celebrations and your grandmother definitely knew many of them. Definitely. Midsummer is biggest celebrations in Latvia and you traditionally sing a lot during the celebrations. Even today, let alone generation of your grandmother.
I barely learned any from my grandmother or mother. I still try to pick up some from time to time, especially as I get way too excited about LĪgo/John's Day every year!

Beautiful! Powerful as well. I wish I'd be able to speak the language and directly translate it in my head, although that can't be achieved to be the same level as with my 1st language, Estonian.
