As a Latvian living abroad, this song, its words, the meaning behind them, together change my life and how I view my birthplace. To literally fight hardship with song takes a certain strength for a nation and it is one that I will always be eternally proud to have as my heritage.
When you think about it.. It is makes sense. Sun - our mother that brings light and warmth in our hearts. Thunder our Father - harsh and unforgiving yet, he is our Protector. Love this song so Much!

We have some kind of Slavs, mainly because in the USSR many families traveled to Latvia to get a better life here... That's why many people grandmoms are Russian, Belarussian, Ukrainian and more...

Slavs have thunder god "Perun", Balts call thunder god "Pērkons" (in Latvian), Perkunas (Lithuanians). No wonder, because both Slavs and the Balts are of one, common Indoeuropean origin, although today we are completely different language groups.

Latvians are true to a lot of our roots :D We still have a lot of holidays that are still celebrated in traditional ways (like Easter, it's much more traditional than religious, even though some people do go to church, most Latvians recognize it as nothing but a solstice, which it originally was).
Do some reading. Latvians are descendants of the Indo-European people, and cannot have any Slavic roots, as the Slavs are a comparatively new development. Yes, Pērkons is analogous to Thor in a way.
So Latvia must get along great with its neighbors! Where does this river Daugava originate? Who traveled down this river to trade? What does "locking up death" mean? Who are the strangers who broke the gate, and the devils who were struck by thunder? Just criticizing the overly nationalistic nature of this song. Still beautiful, to the eyes and ears, just not the mind.
Translation is not so good. U cant realy translate its meaning. U would get closer to meaning if there would be used old-english style translation (like in old tales, midleages). And its poetry - so meaning of some words is deeper.

Arturs Grinbergs I don't know. As a latvian speaker, I think that the English translation conveyed the meaning pretty well. Up until 1918 Latvia was constantly occupied by one or other force - Swedes, Germans, Poles, Russians, ... we were living here for a long time without any freedom to live our lives. And when this text was written Latvia was still occupied, so it is a bit obfucated, but then it was actually published in 1919 - Latvia was free at last and that fueled the raw emotion of happiness embedded in the text and revived by the song.
It's funny cause Latvia is a totally artificial construct (culturally existing for some 150 years, politically for less than 100... if we count the fact that Latgale only in 1917 congress decided to join the rest of what is Latvia) from various and some not so similar tribes living historically in this area... so as cool as this song is, mythologically it is unfortunately a total bullshit (the thing about sun placing Latvia anywhere) And I'm saying that as a Latvian and a patriot. Facts are facts.
