Last year was my first year growing Dahlia’s and wintering them over. I put them in cardboard boxes [with holes] with wood shavings [very messy]. I only checked on them once because I over filled the boxes and it was too messy and difficult to check on every single tuber. As a result I lost 4 but the others survived so I divided them up [got 25].
It’s also too cold at nights here in Ontario until this weekend [fingers crossed] so I potted up all the surviving tubers into old pots from last year with some slightly moistened triple mix soil and put them by a south facing window back in late april. Over half of them are 3-8 inches tall already. Looks like I’m ahead of the game this year. I’m very excited!
Thank you so much for the videos, they have been a big help on my gardening journey this past year!

With the ongoing changes and revamps to the property as a whole, I thought it’d be cool if Aaron could document it via drone footage. From the lawn trenches to the new property taking shape. The old wonky sidewalk being replaced by new pathways that match. Lol It would be an awesome timelapse video at the end of the year to show all the progress, even if it’s still a work in progress. Even once a month coverage would likely show huge changes at the rate ur planting new trees...and of course, the much anticipated Hartley. 😍 Happy for you all and am enjoying watching and learning as you grow.

Oh well done Laura, they really did well. So important for all of us to grow as many of our plants for the next season as possible from a sustainability point of view. Worth mentioning that if anyone have any slightly dessicated tubers it's worth putting them in a bucket of water to rehydrate before planting, pretty much the same principle when dealing with bare root plants.

I finally listened to you Laura and ordered a pair of Felco 2 hand pruner. Best money I ever spent. They are certainly worth the price. I have used them already to trim my 24 shrub roses. I'm in central AL. Each rose bush had at least 100 rose flowers on them so I feel trimming all the dead heads off was a good test of the Felcos. No hand fatigue and they cut everything like butter. I tried to order them last year but they were out of stock probably due to covid-19 closing factories and shipping down. Thanks for always telling us to use Felcos as they are the best cutting tool for gardening.

Can you just clean them up and remove any broken tubers and divide in half if it’s a really big bunch? Y’all are amazing thank you so much for everything you and Aaron do. I’ve been a gardener all my life. I have such fond memories of gardening when small with all four of my grandparents. Everything I've done with my dahlia tubers has been wrong so it will be a miracle if any have survived the Winter. I stored them in a basket in the greenhouse then early Spring put them in buckets of soil outside. They're cold, wet & nothing happening. I'm going to dig them out, wash them off, divide & plant them again in some nice compost outside to get going if possible. At least now I know how to store them properly for next Winter time. If these ones are dead I'll buy some fresh ones & begin again, now I know how to do it thanks to this video.

Seems I did everything wrong according to this video when I planted my dahlias yets they persevered! They are about 12 inches tall with great foliage and a nice thick stem. Good thing plants are very resilient and forgiving of human error. Keeps us encourage and allows us to live to plant another season! Thanks for all the videos.

You make it look so easy 😉 I stored the tubers for the first time this year and although they ended up being quite large I was so scared to divide them that I planted them as they were. Next year I’m definitely going to try to divide them. Thanks for the tutorial 👍🏻

I noticed that you wrote directly on the tubers to label them. Did you use just a regular sharpie marker or a garden marker? And does it stay through the growing season or do you just remember what was planted? I can’t wait to see all these glorious flowers 🌸🤍

Hello Hannah, I hope Laura gets to answer this question, but if she doesn’t get to it, another youtube channel suggested using an indelible ink pencil, as opposed to a sharpie, as it will fade.
In an older Garden Answer video, Laura uses the Garden Markers on the plastic tags which she said she picked up from the Garden Centre.
      I hope this helps you.

I planted 5 dahlias last year, only 2 for some reason grew and bloomed. I also did not dig them up, and those 2 came back this year (zone 7a, right on the cusp). Watching that exhausted me lol. I’ll keep treating mine as annuals. I need to KISS (Keep it simple, Stephanie!). 💕

My dahlia tubers are always quite dessicated at the end of winter but I've never lost one. I plant them all and they all bloom just fine. Maybe you could try to plant the dessicated tubers and see if they come back for you (but ok, you might have enough already haha)

I'm growing a variety of dahlia for the first time (Emory Paul) and am thinking of trying the plastic wrap method of tuber storage this fall.
I attempted growing dahlias when I first began gardening 30 years ago, but knew nothing back then. I dug up the tubers, but short of storing them in my basement did nothing to promote their viability. This was pre Internet. 😜

Does one tuber have multiple eyes, therefore, producing multiple flowers? Please, and thank you!

Amazing video. So so useful. We’re in a dryish part of inland South Africa. I have inherited hundreds of dahlia plants (now died down as it’s our winter) and so feel that I need to learn how to care for this amazing crop. I appreciate all your tips. You’re excellent at this. Very inspiring. Love from good old sunny 🌞 RSA

Here in Uk i’m a first time dahlia grower and after your video, I understand a lot more. I was staggered at how they flowered. We haven’t had first frosts but when I lift them, I hope to have more tubers like you and now know how to divide them. Thank you.

looks like you still have pumpkin and squash leftover from last growing season! Do they taste as good at this point? You still using them in recipes? Thanks for all the inspiration always! You inspired me to start my own youtube channel and now I get to geek out about gardening with my online gardening friends! 🤗🌱

Thank you for all of this information! I ordered some dahlia tubers for the first time from Eden Brothers. Some of them were pretty sad looking, and I don’t think I planted them correctly. 😱 Despite all of that, I have 3 of the 5 coming up! Yay! Obviously, a much smaller scaled operation than yours! 🙂 Thanks again for all of the information and inspiration! 🌷

Excellent video with details and closeups! Also love the idea of using a sharpie to label it on the tuber itself.
