One of the secrets of poliglots is that they recommend, in order to develop your skills, to be foccus on listening and speaking, cuz when we are trying to learn a new language in a traditional class this is the most neglected to us. So, even if we don't get the idea of the message, let's try to find something that we consider interesting to us, that way we are gonna enjoy and develop the previous skills already mentioned. Even those words that are of common roots have so different forms today, so that we can't recognize words in each other's language. (Compare it with Germanic languages separating 2500 years ago, and continously having impact on each other, or Latin languages separating 1500 years ago and continously having impact on each other, or Slavic languages separating I don't know how many years ago and still having impact on each other, etc. ...) On the other hand we have plenty of words of Germanic, Slavic origins that are close to their original Germanic/Slavic forms, as these words are no older than 1000 years. So this Hungarian-Finnish relation is something like English-Hindi relation which are both Indo-European languages, but have separated thousands of years ago.
