I met the guy who played Leatherface in this at a small con once. Near the end of the day, no one was really around so he and I were just chatting. When I told him I act in a haunted house every October, he got really excited and ended up giving me a half hour horror acting class. I got an acting class from freakin Leatherface himself!

That’s because it will never be as good as the original. I am not a fan of this remake (though it is better than some) I love gunny Ermey but this movie lost what made the original so good. Toby Hooper vision and direction was far more in depth and amazing. The OG had somthing to say. This one was just another generic albeit one of the better attempts. I remember I was like 7 years old and my cousin and I were looking in my parents movie collection some horror movies to watch. We found this one and The Exorcist. We both thought the opening and the ending were real because of the “Based on real events” from the DVD cover. We were basically dying.
The Exorcist was far more terrifying, though.
Now another memory: We were 8 years old when we watched Cloverfield. At least at some degree we thought it was real. Not entirely of course because we were laughing so much everytime the cameraman fell to the floor.
      Anyways... My TCM ranking:
      1) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

    @ghostgrimmm ปีที่แล้ว +49

Underrated movie imo. It came out in 2003, a year before Saw released and changed the landscape for horror movies including all following Texas Chainsaw ones. This movie focuses on atmosphere and dread more than the gore itself. Every scene is filled with moments of tension and unease and whenever they decide to fire all engines, it is effective, terrifying and ultimately exciting. The Leatherface reveal when he slams the door open and chases them outside through the curtains is such a badass and heart pumping moment, and despite that guy -Spoiler here - getting his foot chopped off, the scene is not even really gory. It was all about the setup and execution. It goes to show that building tension and having a satisfying pay off is much more effective than all the torture porn they did in all sequels and pretty much any horror movie that came after the first Saw where they think gore alone is going to hold up a weak script. I love this movie and I'm glad it came out at the perfect time. I feel that if Saw had released first, this movie could have been influenced for the worst. But that's just my opinion.

I totally agree, gore for the sake of gore doesn't do a lot for me. The Exorcist, in my opinion, was perfect at building tension and unease which definitely made for a better payoff when everything really took off. This movie had really strong elements of the same thing, building an atmosphere of unease and eventual dread which made the payoffs feel much better to me. I really enjoyed this movie, the new netflix one however, that was very poor.

I saw this movie in High School and absolutely LOVED it! Maybe because i was in my infancy of being a movie buff. It may have been that people were actually running out of the theater in fear , which enhanced the experience. Either way, this TCM is on my top 2 list of all time favorite horror movies.

I enjoy this one more than the other remake (beginning) which is also great. I give it a solid 8/10. Top 20 horror movies for sure. I was 10 when it came out. My brother came home from the movies and said it was good. My interest peaked

Re: the lighting, on the way home from the Texas Renaissance Festival north of Houston, TX, one year, I got turned around and ended up on a remote country road. (Had my phone, GPS, gun, etc., and I was running parallel to the main road out of the faire, so it was no problem.) Anyway, I noticed the stark contrast between the moonlight overhead and the absolute pitch black of shadows off to the sides of the truck, and I decided to run an experiment. I slowed down to a stop, turned off my headlights, and told my brothers to look all around. The moonlight could not penetrate the tops of the trees and grass. And there were no visible lights from buildings anywhere either. The road ahead of us was so absolutely dark that we could not see where the road ended and the deep ditches began. There appeared to just be a black tunnel, or black hole, extending in front of the truck under the tree branches that crossed the road. It felt like we could lose ourselves within seconds.
When I turned my lights back on, I appreciated headlamps quite a bit more than I do in town where all the streetlights effectively saturate the road most nights.
    ----
I once had to do a nighttime navigation course with a compass on a Texas ranch. There was bright moonlight overhead, but also thick trees and chest high grass. A fog set in shortly after sundown. This made for pitch black shadows, and murky ground mist. In order to be able to read our papers, we had to use some sort of lighting, but we also needed to repeatedly turn the lighting off and use just the naked eye to maneuver around the field and the woods. So we used colored light (red or green) for viewing the papers to minimize glare and night vision blindness. Even with the lights, we could only see about 4 feet away. And without them, we were mostly walking blindly toward vague breaks in the shadows and treeline, as landmarks to line up with our compass bearings. There were several times when I imagined something rushing out from the darkness, and I wouldn't be able to see it until it was right upon me.
So yeah, there was absolutely way too much light in this movie.
But that allowed us to see Jessica Biel in her tight Tshirt, so there was that...

For anyone who has not seen the original this one is truly unnerving. I am a huge fan of the original, and yes the 16mm makes a difference, but couldn't do that with a wide release in 2003. The key is R lee Erney he basically channels his iconic drill sarge from full metal jacket into a psychotic leader of the Hewitt family. Also, as you didn't comment I do like that instead of running back into the gas station looking for help only to find Drayton Sawyer she runs into the house with the fat lady and the tea. You are right this is a great remake but still it is its own movie. Your reviews are always spot on

Have to give it up to the marketing department on this one. That first trailer was the sole reason many of us were excited as hell to see this film. The slow buildup using "Song to the Siren" by This Mortal Coil until the hitchhiker says "They're all dead....." and shit gets serious. Also great use of gore in this one. Didn't pull any punches like a lot of horror movies had done through most of the 90's.

Now that films are all digitised - it would be an awesome option for streaming services to offer - watching films or TV shows with different, high-quality 'filter' effects, with toggles for strength of the effect.. For example, would be cool to have 16mm, 35mm, 70mm as well as black and white, Super-Technicolor, sepia, or a VHS 80s films and TV option..
Would be awesome to watch black and white versions of certain films - The Hannibal Lector series, The Terminator, The Rocketeer, etc.. (as has been done with Frank Darabont's The Mist film)..
And, to have the option to watch Stranger Things with a VHS 80s filter on it..
A Super-Technicolor filter (like Elvis Presley films or Flipper the TV show) would be awesome on Jackie Brown, Stranger Than Fiction, Fight Club..
Of course they would have to be separately made versions by a secondary digital colourisation technical cinematographer, not just click a button and the whole film or series is converted - it would have to be executed on a scene by scene and every shot in each of those scenes matched and filtered..
Would be cool... Any updates on your feature film? Would love to hear you talk about the production process...

As far as horror remakes go this is one of the better ones. I liked how straightforward the plot was and how the filmmakers really ratcheted up the tension as the story progressed. The atmosphere is consistently unsettling and frightening, and surprisingly it’s not as over the top gory as you might remember (especially compared to the 2006 prequel). Jessica Biel does a nice job as the lead too. Overall a very fun haunted house/haunted trail type adventure.

When I first saw this years and years ago, I thought it wasn’t good. Upon a recent rewatch, I have to say, it’s actually pretty damn good.
