Lego Racers (PlayStation) Walkthrough

  • Well, here we are with the PS1 version of Lego Racers. I ran across this in a used game store the other day and saw there weren't really a whole lot of decent gameplay videos on it, and fewer that were full walkthroughs (the only one that I saw filtered the graphics, giving everything but an authentic experience), so I went on ahead and picked it up.
    Oh my word I wish I knew what I was getting myself into. To put it in very simple terms...
    THIS VERSION IS FREAKING HORRIBLE.
    Good GOSH where do I start on this? The graphics are watered way down, the frame rate is super choppy and lag crops up all over the place, there are load times everywhere, and worst of all...there's a DELAY in the control. Yes, you heard me right -- the controls are unresponsive IN A RACING GAME THAT REQUIRES FAST REFLEXES. The whole game is almost completely unplayable because of this. If you think I'm playing badly in this video here, I promise you it's not all my fault -- the steering is delayed by about a quarter of a second, which makes tight turns an absolute nightmare and almost makes drifting an unneccessary risk. Oh yeah, I'll also add that playing this in an emulator does NOT give an experience similar to a console -- it actually plays the game at a reasonable speed, negating all the issues this version has. So don't go telling me you were able to play it just fine.
    I did the best I could, but the crippling controls made anything simple an exercise in frustration. Frankly I'm not surprised almost nobody remembers this version fondly. It feels like they just hastily ported all the PC code quickly over and didn't bother checking if it would actually play okay on the PS1.
    Eh, enough ranting I suppose...
    Build Mode -- I was just going to show the mode for a bit but I ended up getting carried away and building an entire car. Oops.
    Also, something I feel I should note -- in my PC walkthrough, I usually just used the car each boss uses in the game; here, I opted for the other "quick build" option just for a bit of uniqueness. So, before you go telling me I picked the "wrong car", it was intentional.
    Circuit 1 -- This went okay, ended up getting first on all the courses which was nice. Also, can someone tell me why they switched around Dark Forest Dash and Royal Knights Raceway's music for this version?
    Circuit 2 -- Royal Knights Raceway went REALLY bad here. I ended up screwing up enough that I ended in dead last. Good grief. I tried fixing it by frantically going after all the warp turbos I could, but it was too little too late.
    Circuit 3 -- I think I nearly snapped my controller in half on a few attempts at this circuit. It was that bad. Making ANY mistakes on these tracks is costly, which of course is easy to do because of how awful the control is. And worse yet, Pirate Skull Pass is borderline unplayable because of insane lag.
    Circuit 4 & 5 -- Straightforward.
    Circuit 6 -- Actually went surprisingly well.
    Circuit 7 -- This one took several restarts. It almost entirely boils down to the fact that if Rocket gets a turbo start, you lose by default. You basically just have to keep restarting until he fails the turbo start.
    Time Races -- I almost wish I chose not to do these. The controls really bring out the worst of these time trials. Ugh.
    On Imperial Grand Prix, I accidentally said "Yes" to "race again" after finishing, and if you exit after doing this, even if you won the time trial, it doesn't count it. I edited out a redo of this track where I didn't make this mistake and cleanly transitioned to the "won car set" cutscene so you won't notice anything.
    On Magma Moon Marathon, I mistakenly forgot to edit out a failed attempt. Oops.
    Royal Knights Raceway was DANGEROUSLY close. If I hadn't gotten that warp turbo at the very end I would not have won the time trial. That was extremely nerve wracking.
    Why exactly did I hear Adventure Temple Trail's theme on Amazon Adventure Alley? Also, Veronica is much easier here than she was in the PC version, as she never uses the warp turbo here.
    Speaking of which, she also takes a different path on Pirate Skull Pass here, opting for the first warp turbo instead of the second. Huh.
    Adventure Temple Trail was a NIGHTMARE. To put it simply, there is no faster path than the one Veronica takes. You absolutely have to take the path she takes, and you must do it PERFECTLY. I cannot tell you how many runs were killed because of that forsaken set of two white bricks by the idol. There were so many times I didn't drift at just the right angle and missed one of them. If you miss those, there's no opportunity to make it up. I edited out a dozen attempts at this one and I cannot tell you how relieved I was to finally finish this one when I did. The run you see here was marginal at best too. Gosh I hope I never have to attempt this course ever again.
    And that's just about it. Enjoy the walkthrough...trust me when I say this version is more fun to watch than it is to play.

      Well, the load times were actually fast in the PC version even when I played it on different Windows XP computers in the early 2000s (starting off with my HP Pavilion 710 PC, which I used to have until 2004 when it started having technical problems) and beyond. Imagine how fast it would load on a high-speed Windows 10 PC (if it even works on Windows 10, that is). Even the final release of the Xbox version of 4x4 Evo 2 (an off-road racing game with real-life vehicles released in 2001 and 2002) has longer load times for its race and mission tracks than in its beta versions and the PC, Mac, GameCube (released only in North America), and PlayStation 2 (released only in Europe) versions.
      BTW, sorry for the late reply.

    Good work! I remember buying this version of this game a few years ago at a local retro video game store. I still remember playing the PC version when I was little. From what I've seen in this video's description, this version of this game is as bad as Lego Racers 2 (its sequel), right?
    Also, are there any plans to do more walkthroughs of Lego games for the PlayStation 1? I know that you can't do a walkthrough of the PlayStation 1 version of "Lego Stunt Rally" because it was cancelled for unknown reasons. Instead, how about "Lego Rock Raiders" and "Lego Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge?"

      Believe it or not I recently picked up IXS for the PS2 and am currently planning on doing a 100% walkthrough of it. However, I don't have any of those others mentioned. LR2 for the PS2 is surprisingly uncommon, particularly.

  • @zahavzilberman3646
    @zahavzilberman3646 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you please teach me how did you find it all that?
    1. What does it mean that the graphics are "watered down"? Does water have a specific meaning in the world of graphics?
    And how can you tell when the graphics of a software with GUI is watered down?
    2. What does it mean that the frame rate is super choppy? Do you mean that the frames sometimes progrss slower than expected? So that if, for example, the game is supposed to run in 60FPS (NTSC) or 50FPS(PAL), the frame rate being choppy means that sometimes, the game runs on much less FPS (say, 10-40 instead of 50/60) than its supposed to?
    Or that is it mean something else?
    And how could you know that? I think that to know this, you need to play this game on emulator and use frame advance to check this. Am I wrong? And if so, how do you know the frame rate?
    3. What does it mean that there are lag crops up all over the place? Lag is a delay in the game's loading, isn't it? Or is lag basically a bug that runs in certain conditions?
    I'm used to hear the term "lag" from the online internet play (which this game doesn't have), that's why it sounded strange to me you said that.
    The lag think can also only recognizeable through emulator, isn't it?
    4. "there's a DELAY in the control" - again, what do you mean by that? It sounds me like its says the same think as in section 2 of my comment - Due to choppy frame rate, if the game is supposed to show the results of you pressing button X after 2 frames, it instead shows it after 3 or more frames?
    Also, I want to know how many framers later the game is supposed to respond to the buttons you pressed in a certain frame? If its PAL, it should be 2 or 4 or more frames later?
    I saw you said that "the steering is delayed by about a quarter of a second". Does that answer my question? Is the delay, if its NTSC (60FPS), about 15 frames later? so that if you press a button on time x, the game will show the result only 15 frames later?
    I also saw you said you played on emulator? Does that confirm that you were only able to tell the above 4 sections by using the emulator's tools? (The same tools that are used to TAS the game)
    Also you said that "they just hastily ported all the PC code quickly over" - what does "hastily porting" means? how do you do that? how come porting a game allows you to make it playable on other platforms? How does that work? I've worked with ports a bit (programmer), but don't remember what it means, hell I don't think I even ported anything in my life so far anyway.

      I know I'm very late to this, but that actually isn't rubberbanding. Veronica Voltage's ghosts are all completely real human inputs being "replayed". What is actually happening there is that that was a point where she used a warp turbo. That's what it looks like on the map when someone uses it, you just don't get to see it yourself when you do because the game obscures the course map when using one.

    It makes no sense why Lego hasn't made another Lego Racers in all these years. With the stronger hardware and massive upgrade in storage sizes it's absurd they don't take this exact formula, overhaul vehicle creation, add track builder, add online, and add a mode similar to Kirby Air Ride's City Trial. This game was literally the perfect Lego game where you actually build instead of just playing a game with a Lego theme. Lego Worlds is the closest thing to this, but there's nothing to really do but build; you can't make use of your creations.

      I remember playing the PC version all the time back in 2006 but my copy broke one year later, But in 2010 I went to my local retro game store and finally got the game back but it was the N64 version, I still play this on an N64 emulator from time to time.

      Actually, I remember playing the PC version of this game back in the early 2000s on a very old HP Pavilion PC with Windows XP Home Edition on it, and it became the first Lego video game I ever played. So many memories!

    The reason of why the PSX version sucks its because it was ported from the n64 version without any optimization at all for the system, like South Park and Shadow Man, which are painful on PS1 (a weaker system even than Sega Saturn).

    I didn't know it was _this_ bad as opposed to the PC or N64 version. I was thinking about buying this for my PS2 after I saw N2SC4R and his brother play it (th-cam.com/video/pxuyPwFlYng/w-d-xo.html&spfreload=5) I'm glad that I didn't, now that you mention the delay with the controls and the low res graphics.

    I had very fond memories with this game since my cousin used to had the n64 version. My cousin and I would play the f*** out of this game! IMO, the N64 version of Lego racers is more successful than its rickety, artsy-fartsy PS1 counterpart.

    Nice video! And, I gotta say, this is one of the worst videogame ports in my opinion! The reason why im saying this its because of the long-loading times, the awful graphics, that cringy screech when going around corners, and the soundtracks that suddenly stop for a split second before they keep going, overall, I prefer more the N64 version than this one.

    why does it look way worse than the N64 version despite having ten times the disc space. it's like every texture is super-jpged.
    and the music pauses every time you click on something, what a fantastic piece of shit. it's so obvious no one playtested this that i'm honestly shocked it even boots.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mostly because the PS1 is a MUCH weaker system. Lego Racers was pretty obviously more built with the N64's more powerful hardware in mind, and my gosh it shows. The N64 has built-in texture smoothing, where the PS1 does not -- this is why the textures look much worse (you'll even notice this between the two versions of Mega Man 64/Legends; it suffers the same thing from the same platform jump).
      The music pausing is probably because the game has to load off the disc between every screen, instead of from the cartridge or the hard drive. Granted this doesn't excuse how agonizingly LAZY the programming is (first off, taking THAT long to load between menus is completely ridiculous, but also the fact that the music doesn't even need to pause just to do this), but that's probably why. They pretty much just hastily threw all the code into a PS1 and crossed their fingers hoping everything would magically fall in place. Needless to say, it didn't.

    • @vcrt7181
      @vcrt7181 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh my god I had no idea the N64 was actually stronger? wow it's a LOT more powerful than any of the other 5th gen consoles, and it was the cheapest one too! guess I misjudged it as being weaker because the medium it distributed games on was smaller (apparently even the much older Neo-Geo had bigger ROMs, guess that explains the monster carts). I guess the only real disadvantage was room for music files, not like that stopped some games from sounding great (the above game is not one of them).
      also wow the 3DO is total garbage

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it was more powerful, but that low storage capacity definitely negated a lot of those advantages and was a huge bottleneck.
      And yes, the 3DO was garbage indeed. As Lazy Game Reviews put it, "Ironically enough, the 3DO really sucks at 3D!"

    • @retroboy-fh1ji
      @retroboy-fh1ji 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrEightThreeOne for its time, the 3do was a pretty impressive piece of hardware. And the 3D rendering, even if it wasn't true polygon base 3d (because the 3do did 3d with distorted sprites - "quads" like the Sega Model 1, 2 and Sega Saturn).

    Should've used an emulator

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dude...the ENTIRE PURPOSE of my videos is to have footage as authentic to the real thing as possible. Technically the PS2 does use emulation to play PS1 games, but it's pretty close to the real thing. Plus, I completely detest playing old games at crazy high resolutions and filtered graphics. Both things make me vomit. The former just makes it so painfully obvious that the graphics are low-poly, and the latter makes the game look like a bad Adobe Flash animation.
      And besides, if an emulator were to fix the problems this version had, then you'd be negating the fact that this version is terrible to begin with. "It plays fine in an emulator" doesn't excuse the fact that this version was meant to be played on a console when it was released, and that it was ADVERTISED to play on that console. If it was advertised to play on the console well, you better be dang well I'm expecting it's going to play on the console fine.

    • @YSBunny573
      @YSBunny573 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mr. Eight-Three-One Oh, okay. You could've gotten an emulator and turn off the filters; it would've looked much better. But if you're going for an authentic experience, that's fine.
