DC Logic - How Is He Not Spitting Teeth? (No Super Powers but "Plot Armor")

  • This is not limited to DC Comics, it applies to Marvel and many others the same way. Certain heroes are technically not super powered, just "mundane" (although exceptional) humans, yet they sometimes take a beating as if they had secret super-toughness.
    Personally I like the recent animated DC movies a lot, like Justice League: War, Flashpoint Paradox, and Batman: Under the Red Hood for instance. But even though (or because?) I enjoyed them part of me was a little bothered by scenes where characters without powers shrug off damage that should leave them severely injured and broken.
    So in this video I ramble a little bit about such inconsistencies, simply for the sake of entertainment (nerdy over-analyzing FTW) and education (get ready to learn about bathtubs, of all things).
    The pictures and movie scenes in this video are property of DC Comics / Warner Bros. and utilized for commentary under Fair Use.

    I'm an EMT in Baltimore so lemme take a look at this.
    … Jason would be dead a few times over.
    That kick through the bathtub would have traumatized his kidneys and abdominal organs. He'd bleed out internally. The Lumbar spine would have probably broken in at least a couple places, ruptured disks, and some tearing of things what shouldn't tear. It'd be a mess, and he damn sure wouldn't stand up. Probably a moderate concussion and non-depressed skull fracture.
    The head pinball to the wall behind then face-smashed into the tile should have caused mild concussion with possible fracture. Strong chance of loss of consciousness even for a fighter.
    The sink should have caused fractures, concussion, looks like he hit his shoulder as well but that'd be likely minor trauma, should definitely be bleeding more than a little, and good chance of C-spine injury as well.
    Toilet bowl to the orbital ridge should have been a complex fracture, depression of the frontal lobe, possible brain breed, very likely resulting in seizure. The eye might be a loss but might be ok. Eyes are weird like that. He'd be bleeding, unable to see in the right eye, and have difficulty with higher reasoning AT LEAST temporarily.
    The wall punch would definitely fracture the rib cage, shock the heart and lungs. Pleural effusion and pericardial bleeding. Ribs won't work, arms should be basically limb-haning meat. Lungs are being compressed with blood or filling with it or both. Thoracic spine would also be badly hurt, and the C spine would take another blow. Muscles in the neck would probably be strained as the trunk of the body basically pulls it through the wall behind it, torqueing the neck down, chin against the chest. Probably seeing a lot of incidental bleeds, might be lucky and have none immediately life-threatening, due to the body dragging against the wood it's breaking through and the ceramic tile which, hoo boy, lemme tell you cuts like nobody's business.
    Like, the first and last should have been fatal. The fourth would be a trip to the OR and ICU. Two and three would have been worthy of a trip to the ER lights and sirens or worse.
    All together? Todd's dead and the medical examiner is having nightmares.

      I doubt you have to be an EMT to realize how absolutely dead he should be. I mean, the details, sure, but according to basic logic and a loose grasp of physics, if a kick lands with enough force to slam you through a bathtub and smack your head into a wall, you're dead or dying. I doubt anything beyond that would be less than beating a dead horse... or rather a dead (Nightwing?).
      ...
      No? Was that a bad? Okay... I'll just go now...

    I love Batman, but even I think DC has made him way too OP compared to just about everybody except Superman and Wonder Woman...I mean you compare Batman from Batman the animated series, and yes while he was capable, he wasn't invincible or infallible, now a days it seems just about every writer/tv show/movie has to make Batman the greatest at everything!

    • @artemisruse436

      Tadicuslegion78 batman can be super overpowered, but he has to be for the dynamic to work. Bruce is a man amongst God's, that's his whole point in the scheme of the DC universe. Hes the one that ascended to his throne, the others were given there godhood or were born with it. It's not realistic, but it has to be that way for the dynamic.

    Clearly you don't know all super heroes fight with rubber weapons and all objects in the universe(s) are conveniently made out of dusty Styrofoam. You know this means all the fights in the comics are all staged and rehearsed. If you look carefully you'll see the artist drew a thin wire that pulls Batman back and into the Styrofoam rock. They cut the scene so batman can lay down on the ground and look like he's been hit hard. Totally faked. :D

  • @DeusExAstra
    @DeusExAstra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    As far as Owlman, the reason he was super strong is because he was using powered armor. He was able to go against Wonder Woman with that armor. So Owlman with that gear is certainly highly super-human. As far as Batman, he's a DC "peak human" which would be a low level superhuman in real life.

    • @jeffersoncarvalho82
      @jeffersoncarvalho82 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      DeusExAstra The problem with a super resistent armor, like Ironman is that The body inside the armor is still human. So, in that fight Batman was thrown at high speed and suddenlly hits a rock. His internal organs are flying at the same speed and stop at once. He is dead. Just as Ironman should be when he land with high speed in cool super hero pose.

      @Rikhard von Katzen Yeah I mostly agree, a big power armor kind of thing would be so different than the ones in most fictions but I think some of those problem could be fixed and not be impossible in my opinion like for example hitting hard objects and surviving: That could be done if the armor is heavy enough to not stop immediately because higher the mass is higher the momentum, it won't stop easily and the amount of shock can be absorbed via suspension system inside the armor surrounding the cockpit, Of course you won't be able to stand against tank shells without any damage but I think you could stand in front of a tank and stop it or maybe even lift a little bit to turn it over if the exoskeleton system inside the armor is strong and durable enough. Fast moving and accelerating might look like be a problem but there are cars and planes that can go beyond the speed of sound but we don't need that kind of speed for an armor in the first place it will be so expensive to fuel these things it's better to carry them with helicopters to where they need to be and use them in the area that idk has to be exterminated(?) Acceleration problem is not a problem if you accelerate slowly while speeding up or slowing down and also that is not easy to accelerate that kind of heavy armor that fast anyway.

    • @rob20ist
      @rob20ist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rikhard von Katzen unless the suit would send out any heat build up pluse energy based shock absorbers then the heat pluse the force of the energy would no longer be a problem.

    As a medical student, 4th year, I can safely say that the "through a wall" punch would break Jason's sternum, probably separating it from the ribs, making him unable to breath as his chest would collapse during inspiration. I'm not even cosidering bone fragments going through the lungs and veins, filling his thorax with air and blood, tension pneumothorax and hemothorax alone are able to kill someone, both combined plus thorax instability? Batman just broke his no killing rule with that punch alone.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Thanks for confirming that. I had a feeling that the kind of force required to send him through the wall would crush him first.

    • @demoncore5342
      @demoncore5342 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A serious question. What about breaking that wall by hitting Jason's face? I mean, punch a torso through a wall, that is not how the physics work (even more silly in the Owlman fight), but a skull is dense enough to break planks and plaster, right?

    • @LLmsn941
      @LLmsn941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Maro150983 if you consider a skull to be strong enough to break those planks, then it's only the Frontal bone, but that's only the bone, the brain inside will still be squashed by the impact.

    • @demoncore5342
      @demoncore5342 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool, so if I am getting you right, head will definitely make it through forehead first, in the situation as in film (eg pressed against the wall and hit), the skull would likely colapse, one way or the other, Jason is pretty much instakilled by the g-force generated.

    Skallagrim, I actually did a quick and rough calculation for the energy necessary for Jason to smash that tub the way he did-albeit using a lot of assumptions, so it may be off. Additionally, for the sake of brevity I'll omit the calculations themselves, but I will at least say that I based them off of the shear strength of a cast iron bathtub's wall of a little less than 1 centimeter total thickness, which should be appropriate.
    What I found was that the impact energy needed to fragment that tub should be around the order of nearly 5 megajoules. To give you an idea of how much energy that actually is, that's comparable to the impact energy produced by a 16,500 kilogram (>18 short tons) semi-tractor trailer slamming into something at 88 kilometers per hour (55 miles per hour).
    Now, your first impulse might be "no, that can't be right, something like that would totally destroy the bathtub"... but consider how, when Jason slammed into the bathtub wall, it didn't just break a big piece off but actually _shattered into relatively small pieces._ That's a pretty violent impact, and is pretty much comparable to what a semi-tractor trailer moving at highway speeds would do to something like that on impact (at least, if it could fit in such a small space).
    So not only should Jason's hip and lumbar basically be pulverized, but Batman's legs should basically react like he just tried to dropkick... well, a semi-tractor trailer on the highway.

      It did. He is unspecified to the degree but he is supposed to Stronger, Faster and more durable than he was. This s really never shown in context to any other Batfam character with any realm of consistency. In one comic he's strong enough to break out of Supergirls grip (twice). Albeit while hopped up on Venom, but Venom doesn't put someone natively into Kryptonion levels of strength. Lifting a Car does really stack up to punching planets apart for strength. So whatever is base strength was, with one dose was enough to get out of a Kryptonion's grip when they didn't want to let go.

    • @number-14
      @number-14 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bulbafett5001since we're going into comic book stuff here. The creator of this video mentioned internal logic. I did some googling a while back and then dude modern googling because data can change with new discoveries, and comparing the bone to steal might change depending on if a new steels created. Turns out it's still roughly comfortable when you compare human bone specifically the femur to steal. Google did not mention a specific steel and so this defaults to the entire category, which would mean 1095 as that's been out for a while. Yes I gave Google time to change the results, I don't want to spread misinformation. Now intralogic might say that these femurs which are roughly comprable to steal, they could train themselves so that all of their bones have that strength. In which case I could see his bones handling the tub because that's not made out of steel, and the wall since that comes from wood and whatever the Creator mentioned was used to hold it together-on top of the plaster. But steals literally the strongest alloy humanity has access to, and so with comic book over-simplification of favorable genetic traits. Native American bones according to my googling or 1.5 times stronger than average or something to that effect, which means the bones would be even stronger and internal logic dictates that through hard work they can beat the natural talent of genetics. And so, maybe the Lazarus pit just gave it the final push it needed to be 1.5 times stronger than 1095 steel. And Batman had world record holder strength when he was hopped up on venom-as well as his own, and mentally his brain stopped subconsciously holding back to preserve and muscles when he broke out of that superheroes grip. Keep in mind early version of venom made him able to lift one and a half tons in the comic where that happened, also he was going through withdraw and becoming sober in the batcave for like 1 month-just think about what happened to the crime during that time. He really came out with a full beard. Also that superhero might have simply been holding back, I forgot who you were talking about to my brain kind of just defaults to calling them that.also you might have caught them off-guard and considering he knows every single martial art, and he's a genius is an intense training routine that obviously accounts for his mind.

    As someone who used to work in construction, there is no way you could safely break through a wall with 2x4s like Jason does without being seriously injured. Those boards are usually installed with the edge facing outwards, so Jason would be breaking through 4 inches of solid timber if he broke through one, but in fact here it seems like he broke through 2! That's 8 inches of solid timber to go through. (could be an interesting test video to see how much energy it would take Skall, wink wonk) Anywho , great vid Skall! Keep em coming!

    Batman is technically "just a human" but DC cheats a bit, because humans in DC Comics are far and away superior to humans from real life. Their olympic sprinters are faster, their weightlifters are stronger to an absurd degree, and Batman can throw street thugs through brick walls without doing permanent damage to them. A huge number of things that Batman does are "Peak human" in the world of DC comics, but are impossibly superhuman by real world standards. Combined with the armor that Batman wears, he can take huge amounts of damage, and just shake it off. It can create a strange dissonance when people actually think about the things being shown on screen or the panel and realizing "Hey that guy just flew 30 feet through the air, he should be dead". Marvel does this as well. While Captain America in the movies is stated to be superhuman, in the comics, they just claim that he's the pinnacle of what humans could achieve, but he's clearly superhuman, kicking around cars, lifting thousands of pounds and things like that.
    TL:DR DC humans are way beyond the level that "normal" humans can achieve in our world
    I liked the video. Keep up the good work Skall.

    • @jonathandoe1367
      @jonathandoe1367 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      James Luna
      Thank you! It seems that most people ignore the differences in "human" abilities between worlds. For example, Krillin is a "normal" human in the Dragon Ball Universe, but in that world it's possible for regular humans to destroy planets and stuff. In the Naruto Universe, "regular" humans can walk on water and throw fireballs. In D&D, "regular" humans can slay dragons and use magic.
      This being considered, it makes sense for Batman to able to punch someone through a wall. In worlds where human limits are closer to ours, on the other hand, such as the Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman acts more like we would expect him to, where he can't jump 20 feet into the air, and he can't get punched through solid stone without serious damage. I think this is the case where a reviewer will understand our world effectively, but doesn't grasp the baseline for the world in question. Overall, I like Skall's attention to detail, but I think he misunderstands what "human" means in some fantasy contexts. I hope someday everyone might realize that in different worlds, humans are capable of different things. :)
      PS: Plus, Owlman has a powered suit, and the "Bat Family" has pretty good armour, so that has to help somewhat. Also, I think that bathtub may have been just ceramic like the sink? It looked and sounded like ceramic to me.

      Nothing wrong with that. It's DC universe, as long as it's consistent, it can have its own laws of physics. And that's what I believe in order to suspend my disbelief. Still, the things shown in this video still stretch it a bit too much.

      Also Jason was tortured and has died before. In some versions joker would beat him close to death then bring him back in a span of 2 years. Then he died actually died. In the aftermath I would assume his body has become more durable and able to block out certain pain.

      "TL:DR DC humans are way beyond the level that "normal" humans can achieve in our world"
      Haven't watched DC much at all, but does this extend into things outside of fighting? If a thug (nothing special, probably just above average in build and strength) can be thrown through a brick wall without taking much damage does anyone in the DC universe die in a car crash? Like someone's parents or siblings? Does anyone die when a building collapses on them? Things like that...

    I think a big part of this (mostly in the Jason vs Batman fight) is less the writers making the characters stronger than they should be, but actually underestimating how though and sturdy the materials around them are, like walls, the bathtub, stuff like that.
    Probably a lack of research lending them to think that stuff is weak or fragile, probably from watching movies for reference.

      Yeah, maybe the writers have never been in a bathroom before.
      Seriously if toilet seats were that fragile you'd have to buy a new one every time you dropped the lid down.
      And if a "normal" human can smash trough tiles with his face without even getting a nosebleed, then the floor tiles would break every time a normal sized human walked over them.
      We don't live in a world made of cardboard and thin glass. Furniture last for years and walls don't break when you lean on them.
      Unless that scene is written by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then I could buy your theory.

    • @danamccarthy5514
      @danamccarthy5514 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can cut them a certain amount of slack for the fact that the building is obviously very old and has taken abuse over the years. The tub and sink may already have some cracks in them (the wall tiles obviously did already), which would make them MUCH easier to break already. Still Jason should not have been walking away from that fight and even things like showing the bleeding cuts and broken nose/eye socket from that fight would have made it much more believable.
      I have several rental properties, mostly from the 40s to 60s, and can tell you that after several decades those materials are much less durable that when they were first built, but still take some serious effort to break up an old porcelain tub or completely put a large hole through an old plaster and wood slat style wall from first hand experience.

    • @callumfinlayson-palmer8393

      Even so, unless the building was damaged to the point where its basically just a bunch of puzzle pieces ready to fall off at the slightest push, a cracked tub is still something you cannot just break with your tailbone without any injury. If someone slaped you against a concrete wall hard enough to break it, you'd still get destroyed, even if the wall had a few cracks.

      @TEMINIX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I don't recall the classic "Batman Adventures" series being as bad as "Under the red hood."
      In "Mask of the phantasm" for example, Bruce Wayne had to perpetrate a ruse by taking his cowl off and escaping while the police shot it to bits with their guns. He slinks away with clear bodily damage. Most likely a few broken ribs. He's got blood coming out of his mouth and he's lurching.
      Batman is probably the best example of a "super hero" who's basis in some level of true to life reality, increases his appeal.

    They do often make Batmans suit a plot device with different made-up tech to push his abilities further than normal. The Arkham video games take all sorts of liberties with this.
    Pretty safe to assume that Red Hood and Nightwing and Robin would have similar made up tech attributed to their suits too. Doesnt explain away crushing someones exposed face into a solid wall of course.
    Watching JL cartoons in general with a skeptical eye is a waste of time. They constantly change the effectiveness of their abilities to suit the plot. For example, they pretty much turn Martian Manhunter into a giant pussy who gets knocked around by every henchman you can name even though his powers are pushing the Superman limits.

    Great video and I would love to see more like this. From a martial artist's perspective, do you notice when shows or movies have a character who has been shown to be a competent fighter, but loses a fight to someone they have no right losing to (either because we know that their opponent cannot fight or we know how great a fighter they are) for plot convenience? Sometimes the opposite happens as well. For me that is the most immersion breaking type of plot armor (or the opposite of plot armor).

    Funny you upload this because I worked demolition today, yesterday too. The house I'm tearing down the interior walls of isn't as old at that complex appears to be, but that surprisingly adds some insight. First of all there's plaster in these walls, and I can kick through it. It's not much tougher than drywall. However... there's also 2x4 beams every foot or so. And that's consistent for the houses I've been building as well. So it wouldn't matter if that's what these walls are made of, you'd still have the beams to contend with.
    There is something worth noting that would work in the scene's favor however. This house was built twenty, thirty years ago tops? Nice place, well taken care of, almost felt bad for tearing the walls out... until I saw what was inside of them. Rusty nails with heads that shattered with the slightest tug, wood that was rotting and breaking when I was actively trying NOT to break it. And before this, I've seen a house from maybe the fifties with foundation that crumbled when you grab it. And people were living there, I was living there. Wood rot is no joke. Even with that earlier wall construction, I'm betting they wouldn't have had such a hard time if the building was unkept. And an abandoned, likely condemned complex like they were fighting in? It's entirely possible there's a very good reason no one was living there, let's just say that. I'm more surprised they didn't bring the next floor down on themselves. Lore wise, Gotham is an old city. No surprise it would have a place like that.
    Now for a little bit of insight from my own martial arts background. I don't make a habit of breaking concrete slabs, but I'm very familiar with the more down to earth techniques these characters would be using, and I didn't stop with hand to hand. First of all I have zero doubt these two are wearing body armor, Batman especially. In the Chris Nolan movies, Batman wore fiber glass plating specifically. That's some serious armor, best we have right now. It literally shatters bullets. Any impact placed in protected areas has to go through that. And he's decked out in a full body suit. Jason however... I would imagine he got some of that for himself, and seems to be wearing it on his torso for sure. Unfortunately this isn't rule 34, so we have no way of knowing what's going on under those pants. Considering his background however, I'd imagine he rigged himself something under there too, we should just give him that one considering. However, his helmet is gone. In Jason's defense, it was taken from him. Not like he just decided not to wear it for shits and giggles.
    In conclusion, the armor, in combination with the age of the building, would save him from most injuries. Remember the armor will have plenty of weight all it's own, so the kinetic energy of that could assist in some of the property damage. Likely some muscle tearing from the shock of some of the resulting yanking (the bathtub bit comes to mind). No way armor can stop that. After the bathroom section, he should definitely, at least have a broken face and a minor concussion. People have walked through some crazy shit so... maybe? With Batman getting a start like that, it would certainly explain why Jason seemed to have no hope of a comeback. It's also worth noting that's when he resorted to putting a gun to the Joker's head, certainly a plan C. So writing wise, they actually did well. Someone just didn't get the memo in the animation department I guess.
    Just thought I'd add to the conversation. Everyone commenting so far, even the medical professionals, seem to think these guys are fighting naked in a brand new building. That's actually really concerning come to think of it... I'll add that to the list right under "coroners". Also, don't ask.

  • @Kragatar
    @Kragatar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +210

    I am rather well learned in medical and construction knowledge, so I can say with a great deal of certainty, that punch-through-the-wall is beyond impossible. Five of the biggest NFL players could juggernaut into that wall and it wouldn't budge. Meanwhile if you got hit with a fist-sized object hard enough to smash you through the wall... well you wouldn't go through the wall because the human body isn't strong enough to break it. The object would punch right through you and put a hole in the wall behind you.
    That would make one badass fight scene if the goddamn censors didn't suck all the fun out of entertainment.

    I believe this has actually been addressed in the comics - DCU "normals" are more resistant to damage than those of our universe. I believe this is due to the higher level of ambient magic - essentially making everyone a low-level metahuman, relative to us real people. (Originally I believe this was used to justify both how Batman could be the kind of guy he is, as well as to justify how Batman DOESN'T kill mooks left and right, despite his cinematic fighting style.)

    • @jlogan2228
      @jlogan2228 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that actually would make alot more sense. like that universe "normal" people are like 1.5 times as tough and strong as reality and if they train they can bump it up. Would also explain how batman is strong enough to do the one arm lift and hold to a full grown human without effort bc even world class strong men couldnt do that as effortlessly

    • @zephyre2847
      @zephyre2847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ye right. And somehow all the civilians lost their "low level metahuman" powers and only the human heroes kept it.

    • @kevinschultz6091
      @kevinschultz6091 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zephyre2847 - not really. The issue is how "civilians" in the DCU can get the crap kicked out of them, and yet not die nearly as much as they would if it was reality.
      ie - in the real world, a cinematic fight scene should kill off a lot more mooks than would seem.

    That tub sounded like cultured stone. I always cut the middle out of the tub with a grinder but I guess bashing it into a thousand pieces works too. Also, with old slat and plaster walls, I've bent nails trying to get through that stuff but once you get a hole, it crumbles apart easily..

    Great analysis! And plays as basically being the opposite-but-related form of your typical movie "paper armor" where swords and daggers and arrows just go through actual armor, while unarmored people take way more damage than should be possible... If you really think about these things there should be no reason for anyone to wear armor in these universes if both these things are true, as they often are.

      He can work even at that power level as long as the story works for that. It can transform to a "one-punch" type or a philosophical story. It could be the straggle he must overcome no matter his power level like becoming a tyrant or a godlike being or even caring about humans anymore! Still my personal favorite is superboy powerlevel stories were he is at that low low level of not even flying where you can have some great brute fights. Where he is moving punching bag/delay for his team till a smarter character does "the thing" and have a win through teamwork and smarts and a last punch from the "brute"!

    At least Captain America is at "the peak of human development and perfection" which is basically a low level superhuman and Daredevil has 100% control over his nervous system and body which allows him to operate at nearly superhuman levels...but Batman and the batfamily don't have such powers, or any powers at all which make them completely absurd, prowess wise, and take some of their relatability away

      Batman is supposed to be at the "peak" as well albeit not enhanced with a serum. But Batman's abilities were not just supposed to be physical, but mental as well. Batman used to be unstoppable..not unbeatable. Meaning he would get his ass kicked..but never in the same way twice. Example: When Batman fought the Predator....the Predator kicked his ass...hard. Batman had to call the Batmobile to run the fucker over so he could get away. While he was recovering he analyzed his fight with the Predator as well as other evidence and built armor to counter the Predators ability. Came back and won. We used to get to see his prep for an enemy. Now he just all of a sudden would have something to counter any enemy..even one he's never seen.

    • @rukathekid7853
      @rukathekid7853 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      LaughingOwlKiller The Super Soldier Serum gives Steve powers and abilities that have to be at least at the early levels of superhuman condition. Running 60 mph? Benchpressing over 1000 pounds as warm up? Not ageing at all? That's beyond human.
      Batman does have work arounds, which made his character interesting!
      The batsuit enhanced his durability and the gadgets were used to have the edge in battle, for example
      Stories like the Predator one are some of the best because it shows Batman's greatest power: his will and mind
      It's when he starts beating up others similar to him like rag dolls that things go too far...

    • @rukathekid7853
      @rukathekid7853 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MCU Cap is for sure superhuman and so is Ultimate Captain America.
      However, 616 Cap is not technically superhuman, but has feats that would indicate superhuman prowess, as in, he´s way better than any Olympic athlete in any category. As far as I´m concerned, 616 Cap is a low superhuman.
      Batman is at the highest degree of human perfection that a human could one day be by simply training.
